Welcome to November at St. Anthony School! It’s hard to believe November is already here!
Before we move forward, I wish to thank all our
students and staff who participated in our “Dress
as a Storybook Character” October school spirit
day! The school was filled with laughter and joy,
which is a blessing indeed! I also wish to thank our
parents who attended our first Parent Information
Night last week. Our school is very blessed with a
wonderful home school partnership in which we all
strive to bring
the best to
our students.
We hope the
information
presented was
meaningful
and look forward to our second session after
Christmas at our new school site!
November is a month that is particularly important to us
as we celebrate All Saints Day, All Souls Day and
Remembrance Day. The feast of All Saints is a reminder
to praise the men and women of faith who courageously
lived the teachings of Jesus and guide and inspire us to
walk humbly with God! Today on November 1, all the
employees of our Calgary Catholic School District gather
for our annual Faith Day for spiritual nourishment as we
celebrate God’s work in our lives under the guidance of
the keynote speaker, Father Galea. He will help us to
explore the 2018 faith theme "Search and you will find
(Matthew 7:7), and how it can guide our actions over the
coming year.
At school, we also gather as a Catholic Community to
celebrate and show respect for those men and women
who sacrificed their lives so we may live in freedom.
We will be providing poppies to
our students for a donation of
their choice to support the
Canadian Legion. All parents
and guardians are warmly
invited to attend our school Remembrance Day
Celebration and Liturgy hosted by Our Lady of
Lourdes Class 4 on November 7. We carry the
theme of peacefulness into our actions as we strive
to “Magnify the Wonder of God” at St. Anthony.
November also features Catholic Education
Sunday (Nov. 3 & 4), a Professional Development
Day (Nov. 2), Progress Report Distribution (Nov.
23) and Parent Teacher Conferences (Nov. 29 &
30).
Our new school is almost ready! I hope all parents
received the letter sent home yesterday in
regards to the St. Anthony School transition and
move. Please note that there will be no classes for
students on December 7 and 10 as the staff will be
hard at work packing and unpacking. The staff had
their first visit this afternoon! Information on
student visits and will picture booklets to help
students understand our move and prepare for our
new school are forthcoming.
Watch for news coming home soon on our school’s
Advent celebration as well!
Blessings for a peace-filled month!
With peace; Shalom! Mrs. Gruending & Mrs. Kuhn

Safety at St. Anthony School
Student Drop off and Pick Up Student Drop Off and Pick Up will return to the usual spot on
19th Avenue now that the GMOSS has been built. Thank-you
for your diligence and cooperation to ensure safety for all as
many busses and taxis as well as parents pick up and drop off
our precious students.
Transportation Routines and Questions Each morning students arrive by Checker Cabs or by a “DREAMS” bus. Parents are
encouraged to contact their child’s transportation provider if you require a change
in plans or if your child is ill and not coming to school in the morning. Please note
these phone numbers for your calling convenience:
Dreams: 403.590.7433 (Heidi or Stacy will help you)
Checker Cab: 403 299-4934 (Jim, Mary or Ann are the contacts) Students remain in the care of transportation until the school staff come out to
collect your child for the start of school. School staff also escort all students on
to the bus or taxi at the end of the day.
Dressing for the November Weather…
We have been very blessed with warm weather for most of October! As we journey
into November, please send your child to school with a few layers in case of a
temperature change or unexpected precipitation! Students will have outdoor recess
during a variety of weather fronts. We do not send students outside when the
temperature including wind-chill drops below -20 Celsius.
School Visitor Sign In
All school visitors, volunteers and parents are required to sign in and
wear a visitor tag upon arrival. This procedure identifies visitors as
safe in the building to all staff, students and other visitors. Please
note that we ask parents to wait to enter the school at the end of the
day until the students have exited through the back doors.
School Safety Drills: Evacuation & Lockdown To ensure students are comfortable and familiar with emergency procedures, we will
practice several evacuation (fire) drills as well as participate in two school lockdowns over
the school year. We successfully had our first school evacuation drill in October. Your
child’s teacher will review our safety protocols and procedures before each drill as well
to ensure students feel safe and secure with these practices. This month we practice a
second school evacuation drill. We always strive to practice on a fair weather day!
Wednesday Noon Dismissals Please be mindful that students are dismissed at noon each Wednesday. The staff
participates in professional development and planning for student learning and assessment.
The Wednesday afternoon break also permits students to return to school with strong
energy and focus for the remainder of the week.
Our Catholic Community of
Caring at St. Anthony St. Anthony School is excited
to be a “Catholic Community of
Caring”. This means that our
students and staff make
intentional efforts to raise
awareness of and demonstrate actions of respect,
trust, faith, caring, responsibility and a sense of
community. This year, our faith theme is from
Matthew 7:7 “Search and You Will Find”. This year
the district continues to focus on ensuring each
student has a trusted adult or champion at school.
Each month, our newsletter will feature information on how St. Anthony
champions students!
Remembrance Day
Liturgy!
Our next Liturgy is our
Remembrance Day Celebration, on
Wednesday, November 7th about 9:30 am in the school gym. It is
hosted by Our Lady of Lourdes Class 4. All families and community
members are welcome to join us for this important memorial and
liturgy for peace.
Family Support Worker Update Hello Families!
I would like to draw your attention to an upcoming event at The Ability
Hub on Thursday, November 29th. The topic is: “Nutrition and Brain
Health: Implications for ASD and mental health”. The focus will be on
understanding the basics of diet and nutrition as well as practical
strategies to support healthy eating. There will also be discussion
surrounding dietary challenges often seen in autism spectrum disorder.
(Note: This event is the same evening as Parent Teacher Conferences.)
As the holiday season quickly approaches, we are reminded of the
importance of caring and sharing. Although the holidays are meant to be
one of the most joyous times of the year, they can also be overwhelming.
The holidays may cause strain for families who are coping with emotional
and/or financial difficulties as well as isolation. If you require assistance
during the upcoming holiday season, please contact me directly.

St. Anthony Staff Champions
Students As part of
our school
plan, SAS
staff are
called upon
to be
Champions
to our
students. A
champion is an adult who a student feels safe with and is someone
they would go to when needing support. Our goal at St. Anthony is
to help our students to communicate who their champion is, we as
a staff are easily able to describe how we champion these
students. This month we feature Ms. Michelle, a Complex Needs
Education Assistant in 6C. This is how she sees our staff
championing St. Anthony students…. And we are very proud of her
as she is recognized for working in our Catholic Schools for 20
years! She is indeed a true champion in our district! As a Champion of students at
St Anthony School, it has been
my privilege to get to know
them, to highlight their special
talents and gifts. Our
population is quite different
from a typical school, but the
rewards and challenges are
much more satisfying. My
students give me a purpose
knowing I can make a
difference in their lives, and by extension, their families.
It is our privilege to nurture and grow their skills, self-
confidence and independence. To help a student master a
new communication app such as Touch Chat, or a social skill
like dining together around the “breakfast table”, mastering
zipping up their own coat to create independence - this is
why I have found being a Champion so rewarding and
exciting over the last 20 years with Calgary Catholic School
District. When I end my day, I know I’ve made it better for
my students and they have definitely made my life enriched
and fulfilling. I am truly blessed to work with these
students and this amazing staff, who teach me every day.
As our Principal Mrs. Gruending always say, “it is God's work
that we do”.
Thanksgiving Liturgy Recap! We recognize our Class 6A and Our Lady
of Lourdes Class 2 for hosting a beautiful
Thanksgiving liturgy. We extend our
appreciation to Deacon Dennis from St.
Mary’s Church for presiding and inspiring
us as entered out Thanksgiving weekend
and holiday break! Special
acknowledgement goes out to Mrs.
Ashieze, Miss Del Nin and Ms. Timmerman
for preparing this celebration and to all of
the students who participated in reading
during the liturgy.
Halloween Champion Activity
This month our Catholic Community of
Caring organized our next special
Champion Activity! On Monday, October
29th, each staff member got together
with the student they champion to
complete a Halloween themed craft. Our
students love cutting and gluing, so this
Jack-o-Lantern craft was a hit! Look for
these jack-o-lanterns to be sent home in
time to decorate for Halloween!
St. Anthony Classroom Updates -
Nifty November Days of Learning!
6A Welcome back from fall break. Hope you had
a lovely time with your
family.
6A has been off to a
wonderful start. The
students have settled
quickly into classroom
routines and are
learning to become
more independent. They show positive attitudes
towards learning and they are learning to be
supportive, kind, and respectful to each other. I’m
sure that the remaining days in 2018 will be
fantastic!
In October, the students learned about the seasons
with a close look at the change of environment that
happens in autumn. Exploring different colors of
leaves in our environment and through our classroom
art activities.
Home Reading Program - I encourage you to
continue to read with your child for 15 minutes
every day! Don’t forget to fill in the “daily reading
log chart”
6B It is hard to believe that October has already
passed. Rejuvenated and well rested we are excited
to continue our learning adventure after the Fall
Break. In October, 6B focused on prayer and being
grateful to God for all blessings in our lives. In the
upcoming month
of November,
we will continue
strengthening
our
communication
skills through
consistent use
of TouchChat.
We will practice building and expanding new
vocabulary around greetings, voicing opinions and
requesting preferred items. Additionally, 6B will be
celebrating two birthdays. All the best to Jason and
Brian!
6C The students in our classroom have been
working hard on developing their academic skills.
Every day they are given the opportunity to
complete fine motor
tasks, table top
activities, and puzzle
completion during a
thirty-minute block.
The students enjoy
practicing some previously learned skills such as
colouring, as well as developing other skills through
new activities. The staff continue to challenge our
students by providing them with this consistent
routine and adding new expectations when the
students are able to demonstrate self-regulation
skills. We are all proud of our students with their
gains and accomplishments!
6D After a restful Fall break the 6D students
adjusted well to getting back into classroom routines.
The class had an exciting October! 6D had an amazing
time having music therapy in the classroom again this
month, learning how to use instruments like egg
shakers, drums and strumming a guitar. Students
celebrated a very special birthday in the class-room,
enjoying cupcakes made by the students and other
treats. The 6D
team is
continuously
impressed by the
self -regulation,
ability to adapt,
and life skills
each student
shows every
school day!
Progress
Reports: A
Time to
Reflect and
Celebrate!
As Term One draws to a close, it is important for
families to be aware that progress reports are being
completed by teachers and will be distributed to
families on Friday, November 23, 2018.
Teachers at St. Anthony use a Diverse Learner Progress
Report to communicate the progress of their students.
When completing progress report levels and comments,
teachers recognize the links between the Alberta
Education Essential Skills Checklists, individual student
Learner Support Plan goals, instructional strategies, and
a variety of forms of assessment.
When you receive your child’s progress report, it is
important to understand the different sections that are
designed to give you feedback.
Communication: This area of programming identifies
your child’s success and growth in Receptive Language
(understanding), Expressive Language (ability to
communicate) and Social Language (initiating and
responding to social interactions).
Functional Independence: This curricular area
focuses on helping the students learn the skills and
strategies to adapt to school and classroom routines as
well as self-care practices.
Literacy: Teachers will comment on the student’s
progress in Reading and Writing noting the individual
level she or he is being programmed at.
Numeracy: Teachers will comment on the student’s
progress in Number Sense and Mathematical Concepts
noting the individual level she or he is being programmed
at.
Life Skills: This curricular area exposes students to
family/domestic and friendship relationships, leisure /
recreational activities and arts as well as the importance
of citizenship, community involvement and career
development.
Comment Format: Progress report comments are
personalized, parent friendly and strength-based. Most
comments will have three components: 1. An explanation
of what the student has been studying; 2. A positive
comment related to an outcome he/she achieved; 3.
Recommendation(s) for next steps in learning.
Absences and Lates: This section describes the
cumulative number of absences and lateness for
the year. For example, a student who has missed 4
half days will appear as 2 days absent on the
progress report. Chronic absence and truancy will
be followed up by the classroom teacher.
Any questions are welcomed by your child’s
homeroom teacher, Miss Konchalski, the school’s
Diverse Learning Teacher, or Mrs. Gruending,
Principal.
St. Anthony Staff Engage
Parents and Students in Goal
Setting!
Please take time to celebrate your child’s learning
in over the past few months. She or he has
worked diligently, and we are so proud of all your
child has accomplished! Inside the Progress
Report will be a Goal Setting Sheet for your
family to complete and share with the teacher at
your parent teacher conference. Parent teacher
conferences are an excellent avenue for home
and school to work together in learning
partnership and for parents engage in their
child’s educational decisions. Discussing and
updating your child’s Learner Support Plan is also
important during the conference.
We invite all parents to book a conference time
by calling the school secretary Mrs, Rice to book
an appointment with your child’s teachers.
Bookings can be made starting Monday,
November 26 at 9:00 am. Conference times are
Thursday, November 29 from 4:00 pm – 7:00 pm
and Friday, November 30, from 8:30 am -2:00
pm. We look forward to meeting with you then!
Updates from Miss
Konchalski, the St.
Anthony Diverse Learning
Support Teacher (DLCT) Transition Planning It is recognized that individuals with ASD may experience more
difficulties coping with routine changes whether it be room to room,
different schools, or through various stages of life. Transitioning
can be stressful due to the pervasive impact on how individuals with
autism make sense of the world, enhanced anxiety levels, and
difficulties coping with routine changes. We need to be sensitive to
this whether we are dealing with immediate, intermediate, or long
term transitions. Our everyday practices should reflect this
sensitivity by providing students with a great deal of preparation
for any changes in routines. Our goal is to provide our students with
strong transferable skills, structure, and consistency, while
individualizing their programming to their needs. In building
transferable skills in our students we aim to assist in their
transition to our new school environment in the upcoming months.
Using the transferable skills of following visual schedules and
remaining consistent with strategies, we hope our students will have
the smoothest transition possible to their new site. We recognize
that for many of our students this change may be challenging and
additional supports may be required to increase positive outcomes.
Preparing our students for this move by taking pictures of our new
site, entering these pictures onto their iPads, and creating new
schedules are strategies we will use to assist our students in this
move. If you have any further questions or suggestions to help
support this move for your child please feel free to contact me by
either phone or email at [email protected]
Catholic Education Sunday is a once-a-year
appeal to parishes and parishioners to
support quality Catholic education in our
community through the Calgary Catholic
Education Foundation.
It is an opportunity to ensure the
continued success of our Catholic schools
and to promote the mission of Catholic
schools to spread God's message of love
and peace in the world.
On November 3 and 4, 2018, there will be
a special collection at each mass. Look for
the envelopes in the pews of your parish.
The funds from this collection will make a
difference to Catholic schools and
students in need.
We thank you in advance for your
contribution. For more information, please

Dr. Jen Ference; Psychologist and Clinical Lead
Hello families! I’ve been spending the last 3 months getting more comfortable in my part-time role as St. Anthony’s
Psychologist and Clinical Lead. Much of my time has been spent getting to know the students and our fantastic staff
who are supporting them every day. I’ve had the opportunity to see our teachers and classroom support workers use
evidence-based approaches to manage behavior so that the students can be their best selves while in class and enjoy
learning. We’ve started more focused work implementing positive reinforcement schedules and token economy
systems for some of our students as well, which has thus far been quite helpful in terms of increasing positive
behavior. My focus over the coming year will be to create structured behavior management plans and finalize a clear
process for collecting data on key behavioral outcome variables. In the meantime, I continue to support our classroom
staff with consultation service regularly and assist with planning for behavior intervention where needed. I am
hopeful that as the year carries on, much of this base work will be completed and I will be able to take more focused
assessment time with students to address some of the more challenging behaviors. Please feel free to contact me
via email for additional information or questions regarding your child and his/her behavior at school:
[email protected] Dr. Jen Ference, R. Psych
Reporting Student Absences Please let the school know when your child will be
absent by dropping a note in your child’s agenda or
by contacting the school office at 403.500.2013.
Our school office hours are 8:00 am to 3:30 pm.
Messages can be left on the school answering
machine as well. Schools are required to monitor
student late entries and absences and follow up
with parents when students are habitually late and
/ or absent from school.
Learning Commons
Librarian Update This month we started off with a classic
author theme: Dr. Seuss. The students had
fun listening to silly rhyming stories by one of
the most well-known children's authors. Along
with our Storytime, the students also had the
opportunity to build with the Straws and
Connectors kit from IMC. We also recently
installed the Touch Chat communication app
onto the Learning Commons iPad so that
students can tell us with
ease what they would like
to do for their after-
story time activity. As
for the last few weeks of
October, I am excited to
say that we are reading
all sorts of spooky
stories in anticipation of
Halloween. “Today was
good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another
one.” Dr. Seuss
Music
Therapy This month we’ve had the
pleasure of beginning our
Music Therapy program
with the students! Lisa
Jacobs, from JB Music Therapy, is the skilled
and gifted therapist who is working with each
of our classrooms to engage our students in
music to support their growth in increasing
their self-regulation, increasing
communication and providing a different
opportunity for more peer socialization to
increase appropriate social behavior. Our
students love it when she comes in playing her
guitar, listening to her fun songs and joining
her in making music. We are fortunate to have
Lisa coming most of the 1st and 3rd
Wednesday’s of the month for the remainder
of the year!
School Fees We would like to thank all parents for
punctuality with regards to paying school
fees. We realize that September can be a
demanding month as fees are often
required for a number of activities in
addition to school. If you have not yet paid your fees, we encourage
you to do so as soon as possible. There are a variety of payment options
available including the link on our district website: https://www.cssd.ab.ca/Parents/Fees/Pages/default.aspx
Jacket Racket Calgary

to gently used and clean
winter coats and other outer
wear items for students.
Please contact Mrs. Rice at

Loving God, you sent us your Son to bring your
peace to the world.
Help us to work for peace in our homes, our school,
our city and our world.

CALGARY CATHOLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT MONTHLY NEWS
ConnectionsNOVEMBER 2018
Catholic Education SundayOn this day, we recognize and celebrate the wonderful work that is taking place at Catholic schools across the province. Catholic Education Sunday is also an opportunity for us to share our generosity. The Calgary Catholic Education Foundation (CCEF) is a charitable organization dedicated to enhancing educational experiences for CCSD students. The foundation provides grants that support innovative programs and projects, such as Open Minds, that touch the lives of many students. On Nov. 3 and 4, there will be a special collection at each mass, with the majority of funds going to the CCEF. Help support quality Catholic education in our community and ensure that the present and future needs of Catholic education are met. If you prefer, you can also visit theccef.ca to donate online.
CCSD Calgary Flames FundraiserCalgary Catholic is happy to partner with the Calgary Flames again this season to offer students, staff, and families a discounted ticket to a Flames game, while also fundraising for their school. Last year we raised over $10,000 for district schools and the Calgary Catholic Education Foundation. For every ticket sold the Calgary Flames will donate $10 back to your school. Tickets can be purchased at calgaryflames.com/CCSD.
Calgary Catholic School District Releases Provincial Test ResultsThe Calgary Catholic School District proudly celebrates its students’ academic accomplishments. The release of the 2017–2018 Provincial Achievement Tests and Diploma Examination results show CCSD students continue to perform well in relation to the province. To view the full results, please visit the CCSD website at cssd.ab.ca/Parents/ProvincialTesting.
Faith Day All schools and administrative offices will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 1 as staff come together as a community to celebrate our annual Faith Day—an inspirational, faith-based professional develop-ment day. We look forward to having the Most Reverend Bishop McGrattan to preside over Morning Prayer and Father Rob Galea—a Maltese-Australian priest—to give our keynote speech.
Remembrance DayRecent changes to the Employment Standards Code have affected the way the district handles general holidays and holiday pay. As a result of these changes, all teachers, support staff and exempt staff will receive a day in lieu for this general holiday on Friday, Nov. 2, 2018. This day was selected as it is identified as a district-wide K–12 PD day and will cause the least disruption to our students, families and school communities. We ask that our students and families take a moment to observe Remem-brance Day on Sunday, Nov. 11 and commemorate those who sacrificed their lives in world conflicts.

The forum will take place on Nov. 27 at 7–9 p.m. at the Clarion Hotel & Conference Centre (2120 - 16 Ave NE, Calgary). Visit cssd.ab.ca/Parents/SchoolCouncil for more information.
