As I prepare to write a few words I notice the winds picking up tossing leaves about and white caps forming out on the lake. How quickly the seasons change. Just a few weeks ago there were lots of boats and activity on the lake, now all is quiet. As the days grow cooler it's a perfect time to “quilt.” In those
long hours in my quilt studio leading up to Remembrance Day my thoughts often drift to the thousands of brave women and men who laid down their lives for others. Some wore uniforms, many did not and are lesser known, however their role in saving lives was profound. Even the incredible role the quilt played in helping move people along the Underground Railroad chills me to my very core. The question I keep coming back to is, would I ever have the courage that these selfless “regular folk” had in risking their lives to shelter or hide someone and help them escape to safety? How very lucky I am to be Canadian and be able to embrace the changing seasons and not have to answer that question. With thanks. Maureen McKeen

Program Reminders
Participants from Bethany Garner’s workshops in April (quilt design and dyeing) are asked to bring
their quilts and/or dyed fabric for Show and Tell at the November meeting.
Workshop sign-up will continue for the Quilt ‘til You Wilt session on Nov 15 - payment if the $20 fee is
required to register. We will also begin sign-up for the Bill Stearman workshop, Disappearing Nine
Patch, to take place on Jan 3. Early Bird fee is $40 and will be accepted at the November and
December meetings.
► If possible, lay your batting out flat somewhere for a couple of days to allow it to relax before you quilt it, so you don't get caught with wrinkles or creases. Or…if you’re in a hurry , throw it in the dryer with a damp cloth for a few minutes…wrinkles gone !
►When clipping threads or ripping seams, have a small piece of batting nearby to put them on...they won’t stick to your fingers.
►When you need to prewash several fat quarters, serge or zigzag them in a stack of 8 or 10 and wash. After drying, rotary cut the edges and remove serging. No ravels and easy to press.
