4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills.

Thanks to 4-H volunteer Veronique Stormes for submitting the following report: In February 2008 independent 4-H members Dominique and Danielle Stormes mailed a care package to Iraq of a service members favorite snacks, soaps, lotions and skin care products, music CD, blank photo CDs, writing paper, and local newspapers. Why did we decide to do this project? We wanted to do something nice for someone in our community. We chose a local young woman from Herkimer serving our country in Iraq. We got the idea of putting together a hero pack from the 4-H Facts newsletter and Wal-Mart community grant funds made it possible.

Thanks to 4-H volunteers Lena Thomas, Jeff Murdock, Joe Perkins, Stephanie Perkins, Judy Pasick, Nancy Smith and Ron Smith for serving as evaluators at the Herkimer County Fair. Their time and expertise is greatly appreciated.

Also, thanks to Rebecca and Stephanie Smith who assisted at the Herkimer County Fair by doing hands on Make N Take activities with the general public which included squeezies (stress balls) from the Simple Gifts 4-H project, and silly putty.

Congratulations to the following 4-H members for exhibiting their non-animal entries: Kendall Aufmuth, Hannah Barrett, Alexis Bryce, Amber Bryce, Kaleigh Bryce, Alyson Casler, Jack Casler, Julie Cole, Allie Collins, Lillian Collins, Claire Connolly, Keegan Connolly, MaryKathryn Connolly, Hilary Creater, Shelby Creater, Anna Culver, Lindsay Denhoff, Bob Douglas, Hannah Douglas, Joshua Douglas, Elizabeth Doxtater, Luke Doxtater, Christina Farda, Austin Goldsmith, Kristy Hammont, Dylan Hapeman, Tess Hitchcock, Jennifer Hula, Allison Lee, Mercedes Lewandrowski, Matthew Livingston, Timothy Livingston, Alexa Luke, Alissa Lyga, Kelsey Lyga, Nathan Lyga, Anna Madden, Rachel Madden, Alexandra Mahaffy, Kassi March, Susie Miner, Abigail Mosher, Philip Mosher, Caitlyn Murdock, Charlene Mykel, Devon Mykel, Lisa Pasick, Ellen Perkins, Paige Pfendler, Isabella Raux, Dylan Shaver, Rebecca Smith, Stephanie Smith, Alec Snyder, Helen Snyder, Kristopher Snyder, Madeline Snyder, Amanda Thomas, Stephanie Treadwell, Victoria Treadwell, Matthew Treusdell, Morgan Westbrook, Andrew Wild, Christopher Wilson, Evan Wilson, Bryce Windecker and Kayla Windecker.

Members of the Dolgeville Ears 'n Tails 4-H Club took entries to the 4-H office for the Herkimer County Fair to be judged. Judges placed cloverbud Evan Wilsons pillow 1st, coin purse 2nd, dalhia plant 2nd, pepperonia plant 3rd, rabbit 1st, couchen chickhen 1st; Charlene Mykles pillow 1st, basket made of grapevines 1st, two pillows 2nd; Devon Mykels stone turtle 1st, pillow 1st; Christopher Wilsons pillow 1st, project book 1st, reporter book 2nd, wooden boat 2nd, geranium plant 3rd, best of breed and trophy for his silver rabbit 1st. All first place items go to the state fair to be judged. New member Andrew Wilds pillow 1st, table arrangement 2nd. 4-H kids will be at the state fair August 31 for the rabbit and cavy science test and judging. The results of that will follow.

Hi fellow 4-Hers. Well two fairs down. Farmers Museum to go. State fair was a real experience and we did learn a lot. It was a Saturday and Sunday event and we had only 4 members go on Saturday and 3 on Sunday. Saturday was the judging event and Sunday was the science decathlon. It was a long time waiting as there were 31 counties there. Orange County was the biggest. On Saturday, Cheyenne Kutz took 1st and best of breed with one of her cavies and 2nd with the

other, Charelene Mykel took 1st with her pet class cavy, Christopher Wilson took 1st, best of breed with his rabbit and Evan Wilson took 1st with his rabbit. Christopher went up for best in show, but there were too many rabbits and it was tough for the judges. It came out to be a dutch. On Sunday we took the test, it took hours. Charlene Mykel took top cavy knowledge in all the counties. Next we are going to the Farmers Museum Autumn Harvest Festival. Submitted by 4-H Club News Reporter Christopher Wilson

YEAR-END PARTY by Natasha Mower The Cow Belles 4-H Club had a year-end party on August 28, 2008. Each family brought over ingredients to bake the dishes to share. The 4-H members prepared the entire meal for the members picnic. The menu included hamburgers and hot dogs, wedding salad, tomato and cucumber salad, and fruit salad. Dessert consisted of chocolate chip cookies and red, white, and blue pie.

The picnic was held at the Joe and Stephanie Perkins home. 10 adults and 14 children attended the picnic. A kickball game was played by all. Everyone had a good time!

4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills.

Are you getting all the benefits available to you as a 4-Her or are you missing out by not belonging to a 4-H Club? Do you complete year-end completion sheets? If you dont, you wont get credit for completing this year in 4-H.

Did you participate in the 4-H Public Presentation Event? Did you exhibit at County Fair? Did you do a community service, participate in at least two contributing educational events? Have you done more than one 4-H project this year? You may qualify for an Outstanding 4-H Member Award. But you cant receive this award unless you fill out and send in the completion sheet. And dont forget to keep your 4-H membership up-to-date. Your 4-H individual re-enrollment sheet (which was sent to you in September) needs to be returned to the 4-H Office as soon as possible.

Please note the late fee policy: $5 if received by October 1st; $10 if received October 2nd-December 31st; $15 if received after January 1st.

There are many educational and fun activities in the 4-H program. Be sure to get the most out of your 4-H years.

4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship, and life skills.

The Cow Belles 4-H Club met at the Cooperstown Junior Livestock Show to discuss how the show was going. Ellen Perkins showed for the first time and placed first in Showmanship. Tess Hitchcock received Reserve Grand Champion and Reserve Junior Champion. All of us had an awesome time at the show. We also discussed the County Fair. After the meeting we had a pizza party. We met on July 23 to work on our green tags for the fair to fill them out early. We also filled out year-end paperwork.

The Dolgeville Ears ‘N Tails 4-H Club reported their garden has taken up a lot of time. With the heavy rains the pumpkins haven't really done well so we wont have any. The beans, beets, flowers and mammoth sunflowers are doing well. 4-Hers entered the county fair. Many of their entries took first place blue ribbons. Any blue ribbon entry will go on to the state fair. Rabbits and cavies will be shown at the state fair on August 30th and the 31st. No animal exhibits will be in the youth building for all to see. The results of state fair winnings will be reported later. Our next thing is the Farmers Museum Autumn Harvest Festival on September 13 and 14th.

During the month of July, the Foxy Trotters 4-H Club held the Herkimer County Point Show. The show was a success and went very smoothly. Many girls from our club qualified to go to the New York State Fair and will represent Herkimer County. The club also held our monthly business meeting. At the meeting we filled out our year end completion sheets. In the next few months the Foxy Trotters are looking forward to ending the 4-H year and starting a new one.

In June the Horse’n Around 4-H Club had a trail ride clinic. In July they made wind spinners out of soda bottles. In August they made taffy candy. Lindsay Denhoff, Lisa Pasick and Lexi Grower attended the 4-H Horse Point

Show in West Winfield the weekend of July 19th and July 20th. Lisa was Champion of the English division and Lexi was the Champion of the walk trot English Division. Lisa was also high point Champion for the over all senior division.

In July, Hilary Creater, Shelby Creater and Dylan Hapeman from the Little Falls 4-H Friends 4-H Club showed at the Farmers Museum Junior Livestock Show. Hilary brought her Brown Swiss heifer, Dance, and her Holstein heifer, Marbles. Shelby brought her Ayrshire calf, Lia, and her Holstein heifer, Tic Tac. Dylan brought his Brown Swiss cow, Sunny, and his Ayshire heifer, Ruby. They had a good time and are looking forward to showing their dairy cows, beef and/or goats at the Herkimer Fair. Also, Claire Connolly, Keegan Connolly, Mary Kathryn Connolly and Dylan Hapeman entered posters for the NYCAMH contest. This years focus was Chemical Safety and Animal Handling. In August, many club members will be participating in the Little Falls Canal Days with a float focusing on the theme, The Power of Water. They will also be entering projects at the Herkimer County and State Fair.

Page 9 October 2008 CCE Herkimer County 4-H Facts The Little Falls 4-H Friends 4-H club had a very wet Canal Days. The theme was The Power of Water and it rained the whole time we were setting up. It was truly the dog days of summer. We would like to thank Clarence Hapeman for driving and Henry Creater for letting us use his wagon.

On June 30, some members of the Schuyler Hillbillies 4-H Club went to the CNY dairy judging contest. They were Kayla Windecker, Bryce Windecker, and Andy Chlus. Also, Stacy Collins and Bob Douglas from the Milkshakers 4-H club went with us. On July 2, Kyle Johannsen came over to the Windeckers farm and did a topline demonstration. Members that attended were Kayla Windecker, Bryce Windecker, Jordan Upson, and Dan Upson.

Attendees to The Farmers Museum Livestock Show were Kayla Windecker, Bryce Windecker, Rose Simmons, and Andy Chlus. Andy Chlus got 2nd in 12 yr. old showmanship, 1st fall calf, and overall jr. champion for the Holsteins. Bryce Windecker got 3rd place in 8 yr old showmanship. Kayla Windecker got 1st place in the 10 yr old showmanship. Many of our members exhibited at the County Fair. Several members went on a field trip to Moss Island/Little Falls Locks for the end of the 4-H year.

One evening in early August, the Starkville Champions 4-H club, under the instruction of our very own local artist, Jackie Snyder, completed their annual art project. This year the members created Aboriginal paintings. They learned about the history about this type of painting and then created their very own for entry into the Herkimer County Fair.

During the summer the club got together one morning and made bottle lamps from antique bottles and milk bottles. Tim Smith helped the club members fill their bottles with shells, colored stones, flowers, glass marbles and even cars and mini soccer ball and golf tees. He taught the kids how to assemble lamp kits and showed them the different parts that make up the electrical part of the lamp. They all did a wonderful job.

The Citizenship Washington Focus trip is now being organized for next summer. Conducted by the National 4-H Council, CWF is a wonderful program where youth strengthen their communication and leadership skills, understand the importance of civic and social responsibilities, exchange ideas and form friendships with youth from across the country. This program is designed to give participants hands-on opportunities to learn and practice skills by attending workshops, committee meetings, field trips, and social events. This 4-H leadership program is for high school youth ages 14-19 from all across America. Thousands of 4-H youth go to the National 4-H Youth Conference Center every summer to participate in this week-long program that enriches young peoples lives through activities that broaden their appreciation and respect for themselves and others. This trip is organized as a state delegation. If a 45 passenger bus is filled, each participant will pay $975 plus or minus $50. That does not include souvenir or extras money. The weeks available are July 5-11 or July 12-18. If a participant cancels out after November 1, 2008 he/she will still have to pay for the trip or find a replacement. For additional information regarding this trip, please contact JoAnn at the 4-H office.

Due to the success of this fundraiser in past years, we will again take orders in advance for several cheese products on order blanks provided by the 4-H office and distributed to club organization leaders. Orders are due to the 4-H office by Wednesday, October 29th. No late orders will be accepted.

All orders must be pre-paid to insure delivery in time for Thanksgiving. Attention Independent Members: if you would like to participate in this cheese sale please stop by the office to pick up an order blank, or call 866-7920 and well mail one to you.

ANNUAL 4-H FUND RAISING EVENTS

Fund raising plays an important part in 4-H. Each year 4-H Clubs have the opportunity to boost their own club treasuries as well as contributing to the 4-H Private Support Fund by participating in the Annual 4-H Fund Raising Events.

These fundraisers help us provide many educational opportunities including trips, awards, and recognitions for Herkimer County 4-H members and leaders which would otherwise be impossible.

WE STRONGLY URGE EACH 4-H CLUB and INDEPENDENT MEMBERS TO PARTICIPATE AND WORK TOWARD THIS COMMON GOAL. If you plan on attending any of the 4-H trips, participating in the fundraisers is a great way to help us offset the cost of a trip.

Does your 4-H Club like parties? Would you like to go to a pizza party with your club and some new friends?

Here’s how - help us start a new 4-H Club. Your 4-H Club needs to identify a willing adult to be a 4-H Club Organizational Leader of a new 4-H Club. Inform JoAnn at the 4-H Office who the potential leader is and how to contact this person. A 4-H staff member will get in touch with him/her to start the club. When the new club enrollment sheet and program plan are received by the 4-H Office, a joint pizza party will be arranged for the new club and the club

who helped form it. Remember:

Your 4-H Club + New 4-H Club = Pizza Party

BREANNA'S BACK TO SCHOOL BREAKFAST IDEAS Hello my name is Breanna Douglas and I am the Herkimer County Dairy Princess. Now that everyone is heading back to school; what a better way to head off than with a healthy quick breakfast. Studies show that children who eat breakfast perform better and have fewer behavior problems, and it is the most important meal of the day. If you are like me you do not have a lot of time in the morning, but I always make time for breakfast. It gets you going and if you incorporate a dairy product you have one of your 3-A-Day servings for stronger bones and muscles. The recipes must have either milk, cheese, or yogurt in them. Here are two good recipes that kids can try with their parents. You could even change the fruits added to the shake and be adventurous!

Rise & Shine Back to School Shake 1/3 cup low fat or nonfat plain yogurt ½ cup low fat or nonfat milk ½ ripe banana, peeled 2 tablespoons pineapple (or pineapple-orange) juice concentrate, undiluted

In blender, whirl all ingredients together 30 seconds to 1 minute until smooth and frothy. Friday Morning French Toast 6 bread slices 1/2 cup milk

2 eggs, beaten 1/4 teaspoon sugar 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon 1 tablespoon oil Beat eggs. Add milk, sugar, and cinnamon and mix together. Use a fork to dip each bread slice into the mixture one at a time. The key here is to dip it in the mixture long enough to soak well, but not too long so you avoid it breaking apart. Cook bread on a hot griddle or skillet over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Use a potato masher to gently press down so your French toast is crispy and golden in the center without burning the crust. Serves 3.

Suggested toppings: pure maple syrup, powdered sugar, creamed honey, flavored yogurt.
