Chair’s Corner

As the new Chair of the Thorntree Country Club Board of Governors, I hope to follow in the footsteps of Sherry Boles who did a tremendous job throughout the last year. On-behalf of the entire membership, ―Thank you Sherry‖. Departing BoG members Bette Moncrief, Trent Ward, Joe Johnson and Charles Garcia will be missed and also are deserving of our thanks for their many contributions.

New members to the BoG are Alice Rana, Hoyt Sexton, Randy Crews, Rob Dunn (chair appointee), and Linda Fredrikson (Ambassador Council co-chair with Jamie Head). Committee assignments for BOG members are shown in the far left column of this page of the newsletter.

Renovation of the men’s locker room was completed mid-June. Improvements include an enlarged card room, new showers, new carpet and tile, new ceiling, granite countertops, etc. It looks great! The ladies locker room renovation began immediately after completion of the men’s; and should be completed in early July. The new flat screen TVs in the men’s card room and the 19th hole were donated by the Men’s Golf Association – thank you MGA.

Ninety golfers enjoyed 3 days of golf, food, fun, and prizes at the Bushwacker member-guest tournament June 12 – 14. It’s not too early to start lining up your guest for this premiere event for next year.

A full field of 100 participated in the second annual Rally for the Cure tournament. Sponsored by Thorntree Women’s Golf Association, Rally committee Chair Sherry Boles, assisted by the many Rally committee members made this an outstanding event.

Don’t forget to sign-up for the next qualifying event of the Century Golf Partners Championship. It’s a 4-person team event being held Saturday, July 4th. Successful qualifiers will represent Thorntree Country Club at the Partners Championship being held at PGA National Resort and Spa in Florida.

If you haven’t been attending Margaritas with the Membership, you’re missing one of the really fun times at Thorntree Country Club. Enjoy free beer, wine, margaritas, appetizers… socialize, make new friends, win prizes. Bring a prospective member as a guest… it’s a great way to introduce them to your club. And remember, there are no green fees if you bring a guest to play on Margaritas day. Next one is in August… Be sure to watch the calendar for the date!

Lots of work by Golf Course Superintendent Jeremy Johnson’s crew together with several inches of rain and abundant sunshine have combined to produce great course conditions. Let’s all do our part to help keep it that way… ride 2 golfers to a cart, follow 90 degree rule by driving (and staying on) the cart path, fix your divots, rake traps, stay off par 3 fairways, and where there isn’t a cart path, keep at least 50 yards from the green. If you need relief from some of these restrictions, “medical flags” are available for the asking in the Pro Shop.

As a ―Membership by Invitation Only‖ club, please think of friends, family or business associates and refer prospective members to Blake Loftin, Membership Director. Blake will work with you to show your prospective member what a great value Thorntree Country Club is.

As always I hope to see you at the Club!

Ambassador Committee Update Margaritas with the Membership has been very well attended in the past year. If the last Margarita night was not the largest group it was close. The fine effort of the Ambassadors continues to smooth out the procedures and activities to accommodate the increase in attendance. Scott and staff are to be acknowledged for keeping fine hot goodies on the tables directly related to the rate of consumption. I have no idea how John keeps up with the bar activities, great job John. Keeping in mind the stronger we make the Margarita night attendance, the stronger Thorntree shall become. Yes, the bottom line is enticing new people to become interested in becoming members. Those attending the most recent Margaritas with the Membership enjoyed the June activities where you had to dig back into your memory bank for the answers to our 1984 Silver Anniversary questions to qualify for the valued gifts. Linda Fredrikson and Jamie Head will be the new Ambassador committee co-chairs starting in July. The next Margaritas with the Membership will be in August. Be sure to check the newsletter when you get it.

Thorntree Book Club by Kathi Ackermann & Doris Whitley

Angels and Demons sparked a colorful discussion in Joyce Libbey’s living room in June! An in-depth look at the novel’s portrayal of the Illuminati, the Catholic Church, the Order of the Masons and religion versus science kept everyone engaged and eager to see the film. Readers are taking the month off in July but will meet again on August 6 at Sharon Schuller’s house to discuss Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett.

No meeting July 2 August 6-Sharon Schuller-host Sept 3 – Edna Bollinger -host The Shadow of the Wind (fiction) by Carlos Ruiz Zafron Oct 1 – Doris Whitley – host Same Kind of Different As Me (autobiography) by Ron Hall &

Denver Moore

Either Kathi, Doris, or the host will email directions and reminders (along with a reminder to RSVP) before each meeting, so please make sure that if we do not have you on our email list that you send your information to Doris ([email protected]) or Kathi ([email protected]). If you want to be removed from the book club email list or added to it, please let Doris and Kathi know. We hope to see you at our August meeting at Sharon Schuller’s house!

Thorntree Board Minutes June 2, 2009

Sherry Boles called the meeting to order at 6:03.

Attending: Bette Moncrief, Joe Johnson, Trent Ward, Jamie Head, Gary Davidson, David Fredrikson, Charles Garcia, Gulzar Rana, Bob Libbey, Randy Crews, Glen Smith, Hoyt Sexton, Alice Rana, Paula Easter, Scott Carter, Blake Loftin, Christian Hughes, Sergio Salazar, Sondra Swan.

Each Board member received copies of The Thorntree Country Club Board of Governors Policies and Procedures, Thorntree Tournament Guidelines, and a copy of What Does It Mean To Serve On The Board of Governors For Your Club?

Ambassador Committee, Gary Davidson.

The committee is continuing the 25th Anniversary Theme and the putting contest for the June 18

Margarita’s With The Membership.

Full Golf Membership levels for June stand at 373. This is down 71 golf memberships from

June 2008.

Cap Fund, Bob Libbey.

The CapFund Balance is $88,000.

The cost of renovating the locker rooms is $130,000. Funds for this project have been

advanced by Palmer Management against future CapFund contributions.

Membership levels need to increase in order to add to the CapFund for future projects.

The CapFund is a 5 year plan. The first year Thorntree received 50% of the new member dues.

Each year Thorntree receives 10% less of the dues. This is the third year of the plan.

Starting in July Thorntree is to receive 30% of the dues. We are not eligible to use these

funds until the full golf membership re-triggers at 439.

Finance Committee, Bob Libbey.

Due primarily to lower membership over all revenue is down $45,000 from last year.

General Manager, Scott Carter.

The pool opened Memorial Weekend.

The Men’s Locker Room Renovation should finish ahead of schedule.

Scott thanked outgoing BOG members Joe Johnson, Trent Ward and Bette Moncrief for their

service.

Scott welcomed the new BOG members, Alice Rana, Hoyt Sexton, and Randy Crews.

Golf Committee, David Fredrikson.

Starting July 1 front and back nine tee times will be available on weekends and holidays. Tee

times will start at approximately 7:30.

In the month of June, tee times start at 7:30 on week days and 7:00 on Saturday and Sunday.

The Committee recommends that members double up in the carts to save wear and tear on the

golf course and carts.

The pump on number 16 is working.

Sand stations have been moved to holes 3 and 13.

GHIN is working to repair the problems they have had with the doubling of scores entered into

the GHIN System.

The BOG received a tour of the renovations in the Men’s Locker Room.

Election of the 2009-2010 Board of Governors Officers.

Hoyt Sexton nominated Bob Libbey to be the Board Chair. Charles Garcia seconded the

nomination. Gary Davidson moved nominations cease. David Fredrikson seconded the

motion. Motion carried. Bob Libbey was elected unanimously.

Charles Garcia nominated Hoyt Sexton to be the Board Vice-Chair. Paula seconded the

motion. Hoyt Sexton was elected unanimously as the Board Vice-Chair.

Alice Rana nominated Sondra Swan to be the Secretary of the BOG. Hoyt Sexton seconded

the motion. Sondra Swan was elected unanimously as the Secretary.

Open Discussion

Bob Libbey suggested moving the BOG meeting to the 2nd Tuesday of the month, because

Thorntree financial statements and other data are not usually available by the first

Tuesday. He also suggested changing the starting time to 6:30.

Bob Libbey said the key issue at Thorntree is adding new members in a down economy.

Alice Rana asked when the tennis courts might be re-surfaced. It has been 7 years since the

courts were re-surfaced. Also the tennis courts only get fresh water twice a week. Scott

said this should be done daily. There are also no trash cans in the parking lot near the

courts.

Randy Crews mentioned that a member had expressed interest in having pull carts at

Thorntree. He was advised that pull cart recommendations need to start with the Golf

Committee.

Hoyt Sexton is concerned about the danger of people falling in the rocks that are in the parking

lot medians. More stepping stones might alleviate this problem.

Gary Davidson suggested that a Greens and Grounds Committee be formed. Its responsibilities

would be the beautification of the club and grounds, but would not include golf course

playing conditions which are the purview of the Golf Committee.

Sergio Salazar suggested that the Board Chair be notified several days in advance of a Board

Meeting if a Board Member has anything to add to the agenda. This would provide time

for everyone, including Thorntree Management, to be aware of any issues and be better

prepared to discuss them at the meeting.

Bob Libbey thanked Sherry Boles for her hard work as Board Chair for the last year. She will

remain on the BOG as the Past Chair.

Meeting adjourned at 7:30.

Respectfully submitted,

Sondra Swan

Course Awareness and Etiquette USGA The Rules of Golf, if you haven’t read it, I recommend it to everyone. After you get through the first several pages of mumbo jumbo and the table of contents you get to the official ―page #1‖. Some of you might be surprised that on page 1, Section 1 is Etiquette: Behavior on the Course. WOW! Etiquette and your behavior on the course must be pretty important for the United States Golf Association to put it first in the Rules of Golf. Some of the words you will read in this first section are manner, consideration, integrity, sportsmanship, and care. Check it out; I know I learn something each time I read it.

TWGA Rally for the Cure Raises over $11,000

for Susan G. Komen for the Cure

Saturday, June 20th was a busy day for TTCC. Events were booked

back to back but this didn’t keep the golfers away. There were 108

participants in the TWGA 2nd Annual Rally for the Cure. Tee off

was 1:30 PM and players ignored the heat and had a great time. Our

new GM, Scott Carter, personally carried bags of ice to three loca-

tion to ice down soft drinks and bottles of water to keep the players

hydrated. Vandergriff Acura in Arlington provided a new Acura TL

for a hole-in-one prize on number 16. GM, Joey Windham, prom-

ises that he will make an additional donation to Susan G. Komen for

anyone buying a new car from him. Sadly, no one won the car.

Dale Hansen led the festivities Saturday evening by recognizing the

winners and serving as ―Guest Auctioneer‖ for the ―Live Auction.‖

He was in prime form, ―Dale unleashed.‖ Thanks to all who do-

nated items to the live and silent auctions, as well as those who

bought hole sponsor signs.

There was a field of pink and blue flags on the driving range. Flags

were purchased either in ―Honor of ―or in ―Memory of‖ someone

affected by cancer. In addition to the over $11,000 TWGA is send-

ing to Komen, they are also sending $1000 to The Bridge, a local

organization helping to fight the battle against cancer. Thanks to all

Thorntree members who helped, supported, and/or played in this

annual event.

$25 Guest Fee Thorntree is celebrating 25 years! For a lim-ited time pay only $25 Guest Fees (green fee and cart fee included) all day Tuesdays, all day Wednesdays, all day Thursdays, and

after 12:00 Noon on Saturdays. This is an awesome value for you to show off your great country club to all of your friends and family. Guest limitations do apply; the same guest may play one time per month and a total of six times a year.

Junior Play Days

Every Wednesday from June through August

Play begins promptly at 8:30 am and finishes at 10:30 am

Juniors will play 9 holes under the supervision of the golf

shop staff. This is a great way to acclimate juniors to golf course play and understanding rules and etiquette.

Participants must be able to carry their own clubs for 9 holes. R804

Tournament Results

2009 Bushwacker

Mens Member Guest This year’s Men’s Member Guest was a great success. Members and

guests alike enjoyed a beautiful golf course, great food, and an abundance

of gifts. Flight Winners: Michael Lord and Joel Wofford, Jason Morris

and Scott Devanna, Terry Stinson and Wayne Wilson, Randy Crews

and Darrell Petty, and Terry Wilkerson and Trip Chandler competed

in the Overall Championship Flight Shootout. On the final hole, Jason

Morris hit his tee ball a bit right, Scott Devanna split the fairway, Randy

Crews was a bit right, and Mr. Petty was in the seventeenth fairway.

Jason then hit a shot which struck a tree and ended up in the water,

leaving Devanna playing the hole by himself. Randy hit a great shot just

off the back of the green, Scott hit a shot in the middle of the green, and

Mr. Petty hit a shot a bit too far right leaving him a very difficult shot into

the green. After Mr. Petty hit a few poor shots from difficult locations,

Randy was left to play the hole alone against Mr. Devanna. Not being

able to get up and down from off the green, Randy, opened the door for

Scott to 2-Putt for the win. An excellent first putt from Mr. Devanna

sealed the tournament for the 2nd flight champions. Congratulations to

our overall champions Jason Morris and Scott Devanna, and all of the

other winners the entire weekend. As I look forward to the event in 2010

many changes will be made make this event even better!

Are you involved in Charity Fundraising ?

I know that many of our members are involved in many good causes and charities that are always looking for new fundraising ideas. Well I have come across one that is about as good as I have seen for Golfers – 45 to 60 day turnaround from start to finish, internet based, low maintenance and you only need about 25 players. Perfect for School Booster Clubs, Churches, Medical/Disease Associations and Youth Programs just to name a few! If you are interested in raising in excess of $25,000 - $50,000 and receive a built in incentive for your fundraisers please call us in the Golf Shop 972-296-7317 so we may take you through the details!

Tennis News Summer is definitely here. Our Camp participants have been very tough this year. All of the players improved during the week and we all had a lot of fun. Thank you to all of the new participants for joining us this summer on the courts as well as the veteran campers for giving us the privilege of teaching you again.

We have many more Tennis camps in store for all this summer. In addition to our camps we have ongoing programs for our juniors throughout the year. We have a very active Pee Wee class on Wednesday's from 5:00-6:00pm. This class is for juniors ages 4-6. We also have Junior Development on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00-6:30. This class is designed for the older junior who wants to become involved in competition either through school or local tourna-ments. We have initiated a skills ladder for our juniors. Each month they have the opportunity to move up a level depending upon their skills test. Look for their names in next months newsletter as well as on the side of the Pro Shop. Way to go Juniors! Our adult programs are thriving. Our Men's 4.0 USTA team, Captain Moses Ramos, is representing us valiantly throughout the metroplex. Our Women's 3.5 teams, Captains Judy Mayes, Liz Ramos and Donna Honeycutt, have hung in there as well. It has been a hot summer already and these Men and Women just keep going and going! The time is now to sign up for many of the upcoming city wide teams for both Men and Women. Please contact the pro shop if you are interested in participating on a Thorntree team.

Due to the increased number of tennis members and activities it is more impor-tant than ever to make a court reservation. We want to avoid the disappointing situation is which you come to the tennis center and find there are no courts available. You can make a reservation by calling the Pro Shop or e-mailing [email protected].
