OCTOBER GARDEN OF THE MONTH

502 Versaille Chris and Melissa Richier

Magnolia Forest Garden Club judges Jane Free-man and Nancy O’Bryan selected the home of Chris and Melissa Richier, 502 Versaille October Garden of the Month. The landscape had been recently redone with the help of their 16 year old son, Alex. Everything that was planted such as Penta, variegated mounded Lantana and two Crepe Myrtles that framed the landscaping attract butterflies. Lawn decorations of Pumpkins and Fall Flags added even more color. Magnolia Forest Garden Club is a member of Louisiana Garden Club Federation, Inc., National Garden Clubs, Inc. and Deep South Garden Clubs, Inc.

Garden of the month winners are awarded a gift certificate to Garden Spot Nursery donated ½ by Magnolia Forest Garden Club and ½ by Garden Spot Nursery.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

Halloween decorations in the yard of a residence on Pine Alley were stolen. The residents will not let this deter them from decorating; however, they have taken security measures to prevent this from happening again by installing cameras.

There was one patrol in October, and the patrolman reported no violations during the four hours he worked. Are drivers becoming more observant of the speed limit and stop signs, or was this just a slow time?

FROM THE EDITOR

Carroll Knowles [email protected]

● Several times this year dogs have “escaped” their

yards and found running loose in the subdivision without tags indicating who to contact when they are found. Please be sure to put a tag with contact information on your dogs. Neighbors want to help the dogs get home, but can’t do it without the contact information. ● We had litter pick-ups on N. Military Rd. on October 23 and 24. This was done by the Keep St. Tammany Beautiful litter crew. Hopefully, it will stay clean for a few months. When using the keepsttammanybeautiful.org web site to request a roadway clean-up, it is probably a good idea to use the highway number for Military Rd. (Hwy 1090). The more requests, the more pick-ups.

Mary Jean Herman and Janet Fouert

Magnolia Forest Garden Club members, Mary Jean Herman and Janet Fouert were inducted into the prestigious Louisiana Garden Club Federation’s CIRCLE OF ROSES. The Circle of Roses is an honor bestowed on garden club members in their senior years who have given of their time and talent to garden club work. Mary Jean has been a member of MFGC for approximately 36 years and Janet for approximately 27 years, and both have held offices, chaired committees and served on committees. They were presented this honor at the LGCF, District VI recent fall meeting and luncheon in Hammond, LA. LGCF covers the entire state of Louisiana and is divided into 8 districts. District 6 is composed of 12 par-ishes, including St. Tammany.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION DAY

RESULTS

HHW Day in Slidell was a huge success. This event will go down as the largest HHW Day we have had in the Slidell area. We received 410 vehicles, which represented 476 households. This was done on Saturday, October 7th, the same day many residents were preparing for Hurricane Nate, and it was still a huge success. It is wonderful that so many residents participated and are being environmentally conscious by saving their haz-ardous waste all year to dispose of it responsibly. There will be another collection day in Slidell next year. Thank you to all of the volunteers who made this possible.

THE GREAT MAGNOLIA FOREST YARD SALE RESULTS

The yard sale was a success. We had 47 homes register, which is an increase over our more recent yard sales when we had 34 homes in 2016 and 36 homes in 2015. The expenses, which were advertising, signs, printing maps and a deputy patrol, came to $220.85. This gave us a profit of $89.15. The Association strives to make this a break even event and not a fund raiser; however, this year’s small profit helps offset the years we did not break even. The feedback we received from those participating was positive, and they were satisfied with the amount of customers. Organizing this sale takes a great deal of time, and we thank Vinci and Bernard Ory for co-chairing it and pulling off the most successful sale we have had in years.

Even with the threat of bad weather, both events took place and both were successful!

VETERANS DAY November 11, 2017

A TIME TO HONOR AND THANK ALL MILITARY PERSONNEL WHO HAVE SERVED IN THE U.S. ARMED FORCES.

“The soldier above all others prays for peace, for it is the soldier who must suffer and bear the deepest wounds and scars of war.” – Douglas MacArthur
