The board is aware of approximately five homes who experienced flooding, which is a small percentage of the 350 homes in our subdivision. Although even one flooded home is a heart breaker and too much sadness, some residents found the news coverage for our subdivision over the top and felt it gave the false impression that Magnolia Forest was a flood zone. It seemed Magnolia Forest was mentioned on every newscast and other subdivisions were not. Some of our garden beds will be enlarged to allow space for more annuals and some of the evergreens will be repositioned. The additional short posts at the Fischer entrance have been installed, painted and capped but will have another coat of paint shortly. They look good and hopefully will keep unwanted vehicles from intentionally or inadvertently making ruts in the lawn. We also capped and painted the short post on the north side of the Oak Alley entrance. Now they match the ones on the opposite side of the street, and this makes for a more cohesive entrance. Mulching the beds with pine straw has started. All of these projects are part of our Neighborhood Propertiescommittee which is chaired by board member Bernard Ory, Jr. If you have suggestions that you feel will enhance the appearance of our subdivision, Bernard will be happy to receive an email from you. Neighbors continue to send additional funds for deputy patrols. There was one patrol in April, which resulted in three traffic stops and a warning to a four wheeler that was not street legal.

APRIL BOARD MEETING HIGHLIGHTS

♦ Board President, Richard Koen, hand delivered information on house elevations and other assistance available to residents who flooded during the week of March 13th. ♦ Some of our garden beds will be enlarged to allow space for more annuals and some of the evergreens will be repositioned. All of these projects are part of our “Neighborhood Properties” committee which is chaired by board member Bernard Ory, Jr. If you have suggestions that you feel will enhance the appearance of our subdivision, Bernard will be happy to receive an email from you. ♦ Neighbors continue to send additional funds for deputy patrols. There was one patrol in April, which resulted in three traffic stops and a warning to a four wheeler that was not street legal.

CLEANEST CITY CONTEST

For the second year in a row, the town of Pearl River entered the Cleanest City Contest. This contest is sponsored by the Louisiana Garden Club Federation (LGCF), and last year Pearl River won first place in the district and second place in the state competition. We are excited to report that they once again have won the district competition for their population category and are now competing at the state level. In preparation for the state judging, they had a clean-up day on April 23rd. This was a well-organized event with citizens, businesses and civic groups all participating. Magnolia Forest Garden Club is pleased to be a part of this effort by sponsoring the town, giving advice and hints and providing refreshments for the judges and the clean-up crew. We should have the results of the contest for the next newsletter.

The aim of the contest is to instill civic pride in citizens and thus improve the appearance of towns and cities. LGCF works diligently to help our state with its recurring litter problems, and this contest is part of those efforts. Magnolia Forest residents, Sandy Solar and Carroll Knowles served as judges at the district level for three towns in Jefferson Parish, Metairie, Gretna and Jean Lafitte. It was a rewarding day to witness how committed they were to keeping their towns clean. Don’t you wish we could get that type of commitment from St. Tammany citizens who constantly litter Military Road.

UPDATE ON A PREVIOUS ARTICLE

Last March I wrote an article about Nathan and Eva Leach, the grandchildren of Magnolia Forest residents, Carol and Curtis Leach. I t was a well-received article about these talented students, so I felt an update on them would be interesting. Nathan and Eva have been very successful on You Tube, and their video titled “Hero”, which was the one I wrote about last year, has now had 15,000,000 hits, and has gone viral on websites in Europe and even Brazil. Now there are more covers on You Tube for you to check out –“Rivers and Roads,” “Yellow,” “Louisiana 1927,” and one of Carol’s favorites, “Sunrise.” Their site has been renamed to NATHAN AND EVA. Nathan will be graduating from the University of South Carolina with a degree in Media Arts and is weighing his future options with either TV or video production. Eva is completing her sophomore year at Charleston’s academic magnet high school. They plan to do more projects together and will also be putting together an album. Enjoy the You Tube site, and it will be fun to keep an eye on these two.

APRIL GARDEN OF THE MONTH 525 Oak Alley

Jay and Betty Rose

The home of Jay and Betty Rose was selected as the April Garden of the Month by Magnolia Forest Garden Club judges Jane Freeman and Nancy O’Bryan. They found the lawn and landscaping neatly manicured and pleasingly designed. Colorful petunias, pansies, azaleas, and dusty miller follow the curved walkway to the front door. A deep purple loropetalum is interspersed with bright knock-out roses which add height and bulk to the landscape. Garden of the month winners are awarded a gift certificate to Garden Spot Nursery donated ½ by the garden club and ½ by Garden Spot Nursery.

MAGNOLIA FOREST GARDEN CLUB 2016 FLOWER SHOW

Magnolia Forest Garden Club hosted another outstanding home flower show on April 14th at the lovely home of Margo and Greg Necaise. It was a huge success, and we were delighted to see so many Magnolia Forest residents attend. This year’s theme was “Louisiana Festivals,” and there were five festivals featured in the design division. All of the designs and horticulture were judged by federated garden club judges. The show was beautiful, well attended and the judges were very impressed with the quality of the designs and the horticulture entries. It isn’t easy to put this event together, but with great leadership from the flower show chair, Betty Rose, and the team work of the membership, it came together beautifully.

Barbara Burgueno celebrates with a glass of champagne winning the prestigious “Designers’ Choice Award.” Janet Bernard’s beautiful design was runner up for the “People’s

Choice Award.”
