Discover the evolving genius and uniquemusical voices of “Beethoven, Debussy andMendelssohn” during the first concert ofPacific Symphony’s 2014-15 Café Ludwigchamber series, which this season exploresmusic written at the early, middle and lateperiods of a composer’s life. As an anchor, thethree-concert series features three ofBeethoven’s cello sonatas, each written at adifferent stage of his musical development, performed by the Symphony’s PrincipalCellist Timothy Landauer. For the seventhseason, charming and sensational pianist OrliShaham serves as host, leading thisafternoon of music on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 3p.m. in the intimate Samueli Theater atSegerstrom Center for the Arts. Tickets includecoffee, tea and desserts. For more informationor to purchase tickets, call 714-755-5799 orvisit www.PacificSymphony.org.The program opens with Beethoven’s Cello
Sonata No. 2, one of the first great pieces tounleash the unique expressive possibilities ofthe cello. Debussy’s Piano Trio No. 1 follows, asweet and sentimental piece written when hewas 18. Mendelssohn began his String Octetin E-flat Major when he was just 16, and it hasbeen acclaimed by music critics ever since.“This season, we have a wonderful theme
that runs throughout, which I am as excitedto explore as I hopethe audience will be,”says Shaham. “Thefirst program is allmusic that was writtenearly in the composers’careers and in theirpersonal development. The second program isall music that waswritten in what we call
the middle stage—music that was written atsomebody’s maturity, the prime of theircareer. Our spring program is all late musicthat was written at the end of a composer’slifetime. This theme is interesting from thepoint of view in seeing how a composerdevelops and seeing how styles changethroughout one’s lifetime,” says Shaham.Beethoven’s Sonata for Cello and Piano
No. 2 was written at the same time as his firstin 1796, when he was on concert tour inBerlin. The piece features stunning writing forpiano because Beethoven was to premiere ithimself for King Friedrich II of Prussia, with theFrench cellist Jean-Pierre Duport. “There is noquestion as to which instrument gets thelion’s share of virtuosity here,” wrotecontemporary cello player Steven Isserlis,“Beethoven was not going to let himself beovershadowed by a mere cellist!” After attending the Paris Conservatoire at
age 10, Debussy was sought as a pianist foran 1880 tour with the children of the greatarts patron Nadezhda von Meck. There, hewas influenced by many composers andwrote his Piano Trio in G Major shortly afterhis return to France.Mendelssohn’s genius was unmistakable
as a child. He began studying piano at age 6,and by the time hewas in his late teens,Mendelssohn hadcomposed some of hisbest-known works,“demonstrating bothsuperb craftsmanshipand a glorious gift formelodies that singwith emotion,”according to programannotator MichaelClive.
