Grace
As a child I would make the association between the word Grace and Grease. The latter is used to lubricate a moving
joint. The former is a gift from God that is un-earned.
You might make a loose association that Divine Grace lubri-cates the life of humans in so far as sin is put aside by God who forgives and restores us to right relationship with heav-
en.
The word that is interchangeable with Grace is Mercy. Di-
vine Grace is Divine Mercy.
Recently we celebrated a Year of Mercy a Jubilee year. Did you ever wonder where the word Jubilee comes from?
It means a “goat’s horn” which in Hebrew is known as a Yobel.(Jubilee) The book of Leviticus tells us that for the Jews every 50th year was to be a Jubilee year in which the beginning of the year was announced by the blowing
of a “goat’s horn” like a trumpet.
It was to be a year of Grace, a year of Mercy and a year of forgiveness. At the beginning of his own ministry Jesus announced a Jubilee year in his manifesto in Chapter 4
of Luke’s Gospel.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me…to proclaim a year
acceptable to the Lord.” Lk 4.18.
In the tradition of the Catholic Church, Popes have declared Jubilee years roughly every 25 years. The practice started with Pope Boniface VIII in 1300. Since then there have
been 26 ordinary Jubilee years and 3 extraordinary ones.
The second Sunday of Easter is Divine Mercy Sunday. We could see it as the apex of a year of Mercy. Recall the words spoken to Mary “Hail, full of grace.” It sounds different if you say “Hail, full of Mercy.”
Mary is the agent of God in distributing mercy to the world. Through Mary the power of original sin has been set aside
for humankind.
Just are there were Holy Doors of Mercy all over the world in every Diocese, so also Mary is a door through whom the
Mercy of God is made available to us.

Rev. Martin J. Bourke, Pastor
Church of the Visitation
of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Archdiocese of Seattle
The Presentation of the
Blessed Virgin Mary (as it is known in the West), is an ancient
tradition, that the Blessed Virgin Mary
was thus solemnly offered to God in the
temple in her infancy. This festival of the
Presentation of the Blessed Virgin, or,
as it is often called by the Greeks, the
entrance of the Blessed Virgin into the
Temple,...
Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to
thy protection, implored thy help or sought thy
intercession was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto thee,
O Virgin of virgins, my mother.
To thee do I come, before thee I stand,
sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petition, but in your mercy
hear and answer me. Amen
