Inspired by the teaching and example of Jesus Christ, and in communion with the diocesan and universal
church, we the members of St. Jude the Apostle Church are called to give witness by our commitment to the
ministries of service, word and worship. We strive to be a community that welcomes all, and that challenges
our members to grow in the likeness of Jesus Christ as we work with Him to continue his mission.

LETTER FROM THE PASTOR |
REV. JOHN J. DETISCH
With each
passing Sunday,
we are getting
closer to the end
of the Liturgical
Year. Next
Sunday, the Feast
of Christ the King,
brings it to a close,
with the New Year beginning on the weekend of
November 27
th
& 28
th
, celebrating the First Sunday of
Advent. Today, the 33
rd
Sunday, the Gospel comes
from the final days of Jesus’ life right before the Last
Supper, and the Lord reassures His disciples that, despite
all the good and bad things that happen in this life … all
the frightening things that happen throughout the world
… His Word will never pass away, even though so
much that is in the world will. He is just reassuring them
to hold on tight to that Word that He had just spent the
previous three years giving them. Nothing in this world
could ever conquer His Word, or any faith that we put
into it! That is a great, great message for us today, with
all the strange and horrible things that happen in our
world and in our country. We all need to, simply, hang
on tight!
With the coming new Liturgical Year, Bishop
Persico has announced a change – or, rather, a “return”
– to a liturgical practice that was altered in the early
2000’s. Back then, Bishop Trautman requested that,
during Mass, the faithful would remain standing from
the conclusion of the “Lamb of God” until the last
person receives the Eucharist at communion, if a person
is able to do so physically. Bishop Persico has now
declared that “Whereas the practice in the Diocese of
Erie differs from the practice of most dioceses in the
United States, and it is increasingly difficult for many
parishioners to stand for long periods of time during the
distribution of Holy Communion, and across the diocese
countless parishioners – often the majority in many
parishes - on their own accord have already returned to
the practice of kneeling after the Agnus Dei; Whereas in
light of the above, I judge it pastorally expedient and an
effective sign of our communion with our neighboring
dioceses that we return to the practice approved by the
Holy See for use in the United States; THEREFORE, in
accord with paragraph 42 of the General Instruction of
the Roman Missal, I direct that the faithful in the
Diocese of Erie shall kneel at Mass following the
conclusion of the Angus Dei (Lamb of God). Those who
receive Holy Communion may, upon returning to their
place, either kneel or sit according to their choice until
the beginning of the prayer after Communion, at which
time all stand.” So, throughout the Diocese, we will
begin to kneel after the Lamb of God, as we did years
ago … go up to receive communion … then kneel or be
seated upon returning to our pews. We will no longer
remain standing until the Eucharist is returned to the
tabernacle. With this in mind, please allow me to ask
you – if not, beg you! – to put the kneelers down
GENTLY! My biggest fear with this new directive is a
return to slamming the kneelers down on the floor,
which drives me crazy … almost as much as a phone
going off during Mass! For a while, Fr. Shane and I will
lead the ritual with the instruction “Please stand” or
“Please kneel” until we are used to the return to the
former practice.
It has been a horrible time for the members of
the Erie Police Department, as well as in local law
enforcement. We lost two great officers in a matter of
about 11 days: Patrolman Jason Belton & Sgt. Gary
Taccone. We know that Gary died from complications
of Covid. We do not know that for sure about Jason,
since he was never diagnosed … but, he had the same
symptoms as Gary. Neither were vaccinated. As
Captain Chaplain, I had the honor and privilege at
presiding at both funerals. It was hard to do so, for my
heart was breaking for their families, and for all of those
officers who are grieving the losses of their brothers, so
close together. I could see how worn-out Chief Dan
Spizarny was in dealing with all of this, and working to
keep the spirits of the department lifted. These are
difficult times for those in law enforcement, for sure.
Please keep the local officers in your prayers, for losing
two in a matter of days is very difficult. The brave
women and men truly deserve our support and prayers,
and most certainly our respect and thanks.
Next weekend is the National Catholic Youth
Conference in Indianapolis, which really starts on
Thursday. We are thrilled to be taking about 30 kids
from St. Jude’s! These national conferences should have
about 15,000 young people from across the country,
and it is always an amazing time for these kids. Keep us
in your thoughts and prayers! I will tell you about it
later! Have a great week!
