Wimbledon International Music Festival 5

Welcome to the Wimbledon International Music Festival 2015, our seventh seasonIt is always exciting to be able to present some of the world’s finest musicians and this year’s roster of artists has elicited high praise:

“The kind of artist list you would only expect to find at one of the world’s great festivals such as Lucerne, Edinburgh, or Salzburg.”Robin O’Neill, Professor of Conducting, RCM

‘Dance’ provides our major theme this year. There is dance music everywhere from ‘Strictly Medieval to Renaissance’, Rameau and Bach on the harpsichord, Mozart, Chopin, Schubert, Schumann and Brahms on the piano, string quartet, reed quintet, piano quintet and orchestra.

Live Tango dancers move sensuously to Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires; Russian pianist Mikhail Rudy returns with the WIMF - original ‘danced’ production of ‘Petrushka’, with which he has been touring major UK festivals and Europe.

Our global Festival Partnership has this year commissioned Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin to write a chamber music dance suite inspired by Picasso’s celebrated painting of ‘Three Dancers’, which is on display at Tate Modern.

This also has the distinction of being separately choreographed by Dutch choreographer Didy Veldman for Rambert Dance, and this production will be performed in early November at Sadler’s Wells and in Rambert’s national and international touring schedule until 2018.

Another theme this year sees several performance of ‘Last Works’. Sir András Schiff brings a recital of the last sonatas of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. Zuill Bailey plays the last cello sonatas of Beethoven, Prokofiev and Chopin, and the Emerson Quartet include three ‘Last Quartets’ in their programme.

We are continuing our lunchtime series of concerts presenting some wonderful young artists, and also holding two masterclasses. Of note is a major evening recital by 17-year-old Chinese viola player, Ziyu Shen, the youngest winner of

the prestigious Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition – a truly remarkable young musician.

As usual we celebrate St Cecilia’s Day, November 22, with a community event: a Family Concert featuring a lively musical survey of the animal world. And the day before that, there is a celebration of the 150th anniversary of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. We would like to see as many students and children as possible at both these – and other – events.

I would like to give a big thanks to our Benefactors, Friends and Sponsors, for without their support we would not be able to have these artists and themes to enjoy.

Anthony Wilkinson Festival Director

We thank all our Patrons, Benefactors, Friends, and Sponsors for keeping WIMF alive.

We all have a voice, few have great voices, even fewer have great international careers.

Ian Partridge, the international lyric ‘tenor’, will provide a fascinating insight into singing at the highest level, working with students from the top London music colleges.

Ian has an international reputation as a concert singer and recitalist. His phenomenal list of over 150 recordings includes Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin, Britten’s Serenade, Vaughan Williams’  On  Wenlock  Edge, and, with The Sixteen, Handel’s Chandos Anthems and the Evangelist in Bach’s St John Passion. The Thames Television production of Benjamin Britten’s St Nicolas, with Ian in the title role, won the Prix Italia. He made his operatic debut at Covent Garden singing the role of Iopas in Berlioz’s Les Troyens, conducted by Sir Colin Davis and subsequently recorded by Philips. He has appeared in over 2,000 concerts and more than 530 TV and radio broadcasts.

Although now retired from public performance, Ian continues to teach at the highest level. He is a Patron of the Festival.

MONTEvERDI vESPERS of 1610

In the history of music there is no more important masterwork than Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 - and no finer opening for the Festival. Already famous as a composer of secular music, particularly the development of opera, Monteverdi showed in his Vespers of 1610 that sacred music too could be developed into something new and thrilling, with instruments as well as voices, solo arias and duets as well as choruses, drama as well as reverence, magnificence as well as magic. Performances of the Vespers are always a special occasion, not least when they include (as this one will) some of the finest Monteverdi singers and players of our time. With seven principal soloists, double choirs, a revolutionary sound world of cornetti, sackbuts and strings alongside the voices, echoes and spatial effects, this monumental work will be heard to best advantage in the glorious spaces of Sacred Heart.

One of the world’s most sought-after musicians in a programme of mature masterpieces of the piano repertoire.

“Even by the elevated standards it usually inspires, Schubert’s last sonata (in B flat, D960) took on a rare, devotional quality. The slow movement’s ineffable melancholy came across under Schiff’s caressing hands, the scherzo was all tinkling delicacy, and main rondo theme was amiability itself. Everything about this performance – from the music itself to Schiff’s own presence – felt transfigured.” John Allison, Daily Telegraph

Two musicians acclaimed for their insights into Schubert’s music, described as ‘the ideal partnership’, come together to perform one of the great song cycles - the story of a young miller in love.

“I have now performed the cycle many times but I still find it very hard to imagine, as I set off on the journey, the place that we will arrive at an hour or so later. There is something about Schubert’s ability to smile through the tears that is heart-breaking. We can only imagine what this cost a young man of 26 who was facing the terrible prospect of an early death. We can only wonder and be grateful for the gift he gave us.” Mark Padmore

“The mutual understanding of Padmore and Lewis make them an ideal duo. The psychological insight is piercing.” The Guardian

Three mature masterpieces of the cello repertoire are the focus of this recital given by American cellist Zuill Bailey, this year’s Festival Artist in Residence.

Beethoven gives us a prayer that must surely be the most beautiful movement ever written for cello and piano, followed by a fugue that is positively rollicking. Prokofiev gives us a wonderfully inventive and effusive song of twilight, a soaring, lyrical tribute to the creative inspiration of a genius. Chopin’s last published work, performed at his final concert, thrills, astonishes and delights us with its rare beauty.

From Gace Brulé (c.1205) via Margaret of Austria’s dance book (c.1510), Henry Vlll (c.1535), William Byrd (c1630), Playford’s Dancing Master (1651) and many anonymous masters along the way, BLONDEL trace the History of Dance in Music.

Enjoy the foot-tapping rhythms and the rich sound worlds of shawm, recorders, sackbuts, lutes, drums, cornett, curtals and bagpipes in this fascinating journey of ‘Strictly – Medieval to Renaissance’.

Elena Cats-Chernin ‘Three Dancers’ chamber suite for violin, cello, bass, piano, saxophone, accordion and percussion.

Series of Virtuoso solo works inspired by dance.

Seven world-class musicians come together to give the first performance of a major new dance work by Australian composer Elena Cats-Chernin inspired by Picasso’s painting of ‘The Three Dancers’, now in Tate Modern. The choreographed version by Dutch choreographer Didy Veldman is being performed by Rambert Dance, and will be featured in their season at Sadler’s Wells, and in the national and international touring schedule until 2018. Anticipate an exciting evening as the programme will also feature bravura solo works performed by this group of international virtuoso musicians.

Cats-Chernin’s range of works is enormous, including symphonies, operas, cabarets, concertos and music for film, dance and theatre. She also composed music for the opening ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games and the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

“One of the most exciting and enjoyable aspects of her music is that one never knows quite what to expect next.” Zane Turner
