Four Winds2018 Easter FestivalSurround yourself with music, brilliance and beauty

James Crabb, Artistic Director

We are accelerating toward the 2018 Easter Festival and I’m confident we are going to deliver on our promise of surrounding you with music, brilliance and beauty.

It is such a joy to be in the company of friends who together form an enthusiastic and appreciative audience. The location of Four Winds on the beautiful Far South Coast of NSW is truly inspiring and adds an incredibly special dimension to the Festival experience for us all, but particularly for the artists who I have the pleasure of inviting to perform for us. I can’t think of anything better for Easter than great music, artistic brilliance and beautiful surroundings.

We have some big news. I am delighted to announce that from 2018 the Easter Festival will be annual. Along with the Four Winds team, I am going to build on what is now 26 years of the iconic Easter Festival. Future Festivals will feel familiar but will always bring new experiences and exciting programming ideas to enrich all our musical lives.

Moving to an annual Festival allows me to build considerable momentum in our artistic programming. The Festival will be the pinnacle of our year-round program of events, artists’ residencies and creative involvement with our community.

Most importantly for me is that the Festival will become one of the highlights of the year for all the young people we work with. I am so keen that they develop a love and fascination for quality live music. I also want to ensure that our young people have the chance to be musically creative themselves as well as getting to know inspirational musicians, the diversity of their music and the instruments they play.

I am feeling incredibly positive about the future at Four Winds.

LOVEFOR QUALITY LIVE MUSIC

Four Winds 2018 Easter Festival begins with concerts which explore chamber music in unique settings, not only in the stunning Windsong Pavilion but also some exceptional local homes.

We’re thrilled to have the very knowledgeable and entertaining Guy Noble as our festival MC who will expertly guide us through the whole festival.

This year’s program features works by familiar composers and also music by some composers who will be less familiar but whose music definitely deserves to be heard, such as Peteris Vasks. This celebrated Latvian composer feels strongly about environmental issues, and this sense of nature, both pristine and destroyed, can be found in many of his works which are extremely communicative, and have a solid and muscular sense of harmony.

House Concert 1 is the first chance to hear The Golder String Quartet – one of Australia’s finest ensembles. We are so fortunate that artists of this calibre are performing for us on the South Coast and it’s a privilege to be collaborating with them again.

Concerts on Thursday feature the stunning voice of Emma Pearson and the pianist Ian Munro. It will be a treat to hear a composer performing his own work, particularly in such an intimate setting as a private home.

Thursday is also is your chance to hear Emma Pearson perform Piazzolla’s ‘Oblivion’. Even though it’s a short work, its breathtaking beauty will be a delight in the Windsong Pavilion.

Speak Percussion Mission Songs Project

Saturday sees the Four Winds Sound Shell come into its own. We open with a special Welcome to Country featuring new works by David Hewitt interpreted in dance by the Djaadjawan Dancers. David Leha will sing ‘Yanaya’ a work in Kamilaori language, originally written for the 2016 Easter Festival, as well a brand new song for this Festival.

I’ve been particularly interested to program a festival which is full of timely contrasts and which places classical music in the context of other musical genres and traditions. Sound Shell Saturday begins with wonderfully invigorating works from the earlier periods of classical music, featuring brass, guitar and our Festival String Ensemble made up of students from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM). One new work embraces the natural elements of the site. We have commissioned US composer Timothy GellerTimothy Geller to write a work for harpist Alice Giles which she will perform with wind harps (small composite harps which are activated by the wind) and a pre-recorded soundscape.

The afternoon session opens with two percussion virtuosos - to get everyone’s attention, ready to experience Jessie Lloyd’s ‘Mission Songs Project’. Arvo Pärt’s most famous and magical work for violin, strings and percussion makes way for Piazzolla’s gutsy ‘Aconcagua’ – an emotional tour de force.

The influence of other music traditions is ever present in the epic work ‘Ayre’ which closes Saturday’s program in the Sound Shell. The work features musical instruments, forms and sound-worlds from the Middle East, North Africa and Central Europe. This evocative work is a cornucopia of styles, melodies and influences requiring the soprano soloist to sing in many languages. It will take you on an unforgettable journey across continents.

Saturday 31 March & Sunday 1 April | 10am - 4pm | Festival site

Kids Tent

with Sam Thomas; musician, choreographer, director and circus performer

A day of collecting images and sounds from around the Festival using mobile devices, followed by a creative session to edit them into short ‘sonic art works’ which will be uploaded onto the Four Winds website: fourwinds.com.au.

A safe and welcoming creative space for our youngsters to enjoy their own Festival experience. In earshot of the music with space to express themselves and have fun with creative activities and friends.

A fun, physical session for young people who relish the prospect of exploring how musical performance and physicality is linked. Explore music and movement, body percussion, the physicality of music and circus.

Our Sunday starts a bit earlier because of the end of daylight saving. We begin the day gently and beautifully with the sublime voices of The Song Company singing a program of early choral music by the English composer William Byrd. I can’t think of a better way to start the day – it will be heavenly.

As we venture through the morning, solo works are interspersed with ensemble works. One thing they all have in common is that they are truly atmospheric and I’m excited by the prospect of this music being in perfect harmony with our setting. The program will take us from 15th century Spain with the Australian Brass Quintet to present-day Latvia when we will hear Vask’s Cello Concerto entitled ‘Presence’ performed by Julian Smiles.

The visual phenomena of two great pianists playing at the same keyboard performing music written for four hands leads us into the presentation of a new work ‘Visiting Eucalyptus’ by Damian Barbeler inspired by the Murray Bail novel ‘Eucalyptus’. This work will be a musical reflection on the eucalypts present on the South Coast. It will be supported by an exhibition, as well digital content online, which will run during the lead-up to the Festival. Four Winds is about music, nature and shared creativity – I’m sure this new work is going to embody all thgoing to embody all three.

The Sunday Sound Shell program ends with the familiar sound of a classical symphony as well as a flourish with ‘The Three Dancers’ by celebrated and much-loved Australian composer Elena Kats-Chernin.

The final Windsong Concert will demonstrate the beauty and diversity of the Windsong Pavilion as an exceptional venue for Chamber Music – with a fabulous piano! Two substantial chamber works by Schubert and Dvorak surround an arrangement I have made of Saint-Saens’ stunning showpiece which I am looking forward to performing with our international guest violinist, Jack Liebeck.

Four Winds is more than an iconic Easter Festival. It is a busy, year-round program of work that injects a remarkable level of ambition and quality to the musical life of the South Coast; for artists, audiences, community groups and, most importantly for young people in our local schools, where access to great quality live music is otherwise scarce.

The power of music can positively impact all our lives, often in unexpected ways. By sharing music and nurturing creativity, Four Winds is contributing to the future of creativity in our community and beyond our region.

Our supporters tell me that they love to be close to the Creative Heart of Four Winds, so I’d like to invite you to join me by supporting this exceptional organisation by making a financial donation.

You could be part of our Ambassadors’ Circle and/or Artistic Director’s Circle both of which give you the opportunity to be closer to the Creative Heart of Four Winds whilst supporting our entire program of work.

Alternatively, you can support the Creative Life of Four Winds through a donation which will enable the development of our artistic program and education work as well as enabling us to continue to be excellent custodians of our exceptional site.

To make a donation, as well as to read about the impact of our work and how donors play such an important role please visit: fourwinds.com.au /support or call 02 6493 3366 to speak with David Francis or Marg Hansen.

THE CREATIVE HEART

You can take part in the Festival by joining our wonderful team of volunteers. The Festival could not run without the willingness of over 100 people who give up their discretionary time to be part of the team who make sure our artists and audiences are brilliantly well looked after:

VVolunteers are involved in all aspects of the Festival, from welcoming guests at the box office and as ushers, to helping with the logistics of free coaches and carparking, from taking care of our artists back stage to man-ning the front-of-house areas such as the bar and keeping the site looking fantastic.

Our volunteers are a very friendly community. Look out for the helpful people in red t-shirts at all Four Winds events - or join them and experi-ence the Festival from a different angle.

As a Festival volunteer you are offered one full-day pass to the Sound Shell so that on the day you are not helping, you can enjoy the music.

The Four Winds Festival is a gem. The standard of concerts and performers in 2016 was second to none. The organisation of the

Festival was outstanding, the surroundings and facilities exceptional, and the atmosphere wonderful. Congratulations to

everyone involved – particularly the volunteers. I am looking forward to 2018!
