2017 Catholic Campaign for Human Development Collection

The annual collection for the Catholic

Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) will occur at our Masses next weekend,

November 18 and 19, coinciding with the First World Day

of the Poor newly instituted by Pope Francis.

The CCHD is the official domestic anti-poverty program of the U.S. Catholic bishops.

For more information, visit

www.usccb.org/cchd.

WORLD DAY OF THE POOR Pope Francis has designed next Sunday, November 19, as the First World Day of the Poor. He has asked that during this coming week leading up to that Sunday, we make every effort to create moments of encounter and friendship, solidarity and concrete, positive interaction with the poor. In his message for the day, the Holy Father says: This new World Day should become a powerful appeal to our consciences as believers, allowing us to grow in the conviction that sharing with the poor enables us to understand the deepest truth of the Gospel. The poor are not a problem; they are a resource from which to draw as we strive to accept and practice in our lives the essence of the Gospel. Practically, at St. Mary’s several apostolate groups are devoted to serving the poor in our area. Included are ALIVE! (Greg Smith [email protected]), Carpenter’s Shelter (Ed Velarde [email protected]), Christ House (Rita Meyer 703.768.3482 and Janet Watkins 703.836.1265) and the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (Jim Larocco [email protected]). These apostolates are sustained by your contributions to the Poor Box, which I encourage. They also are always looking for new members or volunteers. Please join them in helping our sisters and brothers in need.

SAINTS WHO SERVED THE POOR This week we mark the feast days of several saints who served those in need. November 13: St. Francis Xavier Cabrini (1850-1917), or Mother Cabrini, was an Italian-American religious sister who worked with Italian immigrants. Known as the Patroness of Immigrants, she was the first naturalized citizen of the United States to be canonized (July 7, 1946). November 16: St. Margaret of Scotland (1045-1093) was an English princess who married the king of Scotland. They raised their eight children with a deep Catholic Christian faith. Together they prayed, fed the hungry, and offered a powerful example of living faith in action. November 17: St. Elizabeth of Hungary (1207-1231) was a royal princess and an early member of the Third Order of St. Francis. She married at 14 and was widowed at 20. After her husband's death she regained her dowry and used the money to build a hospital where she cared for the sick. May we strive to imitate these good saints by seeing all people as children of the same Heavenly Father.

THE LEGION of MARY What is it? It’s Our Lady’s Army, composed of more than two million active members worldwide. What does it do? It makes its members better Catholics through prayer and service (including door- to-door evangelization, welcoming new parishioners and visiting the imprisoned). How does it work? Members meet once a week for prayer, planning and dis-cussion; in pairs they do a couple hours of work each week under the guidance of their spiritual director, Fr. Andrew. Who can belong to Mary’s Army? Nobody – for the first three months. That gives you a chance to see how it works with your work and family life. How do I start? If you are interested in joining the Legion here at St. Mary or need more information, please contact Fr. Andrew at 703. 836.4100 or [email protected].

76th NATIONAL BIBLE WEEK The U.S. Catholic Council of Bishops has designated the week of November 12-18 for all U.S. Catholics to cele-brate God’s Word. The annual observance began in 1941 with a declaration by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and has been regularly recognized by U.S. presidents since then. Everyone is encouraged to take a few minutes each day during the week to read and reflect on Holy Scripture.
