New St Andrew’s Parish Church Magazine November, December 2019 January 2020 Dear Friends The last time I wrote to you I was talking about the summer and now here we are into winter, and I am not quite sure what happened to Autumn. Winter is a dark and at times dreary time of the year don’t you think. Of course we get times when the sun shines and it’s a bright and crisp day and all seems well with the world – but for a lot of the time it seems to be dull. It is perhaps then very appropriate that it is at this time of the year that many religions celebrate light. The light that comes into the darkness and for which we give thanks and celebrate in various different ways. Of course for us as Christians we celebrate the birth of Jesus – the light of the world - coming into our world, to banish the darkness and to give each one of us the opportunity to have a relationship with our living God. And that is surely something well worth celebrating. I hope that during the festive season we can all take a moment to pause and to remember what an incredible gift we are celebrating, and to give Him all glory and praise. As always there are a number of different services happening during the season of Advent and I do hope that you will try to come along to some or all of these. Do have a look at our Church Diary to find out more.

Dear Friends The last time I wrote to you I was talking about the summer and now here we are into winter, and I am not quite sure what happened to Autumn. Winter is a dark and at times dreary time of the year don’t you think. Of course we get times when the sun shines and it’s a bright and crisp day and all seems well with the world – but for a lot of the time it seems to be dull. On a personal note can I thank all of you who sent me cards, flowers and messages of sympathy following the death of my Mum. It really did help to sustain me through the tough days and continues to do so. Your care and compassion has really helped me – so thank you all so much. I do hope that you will all have a very Happy Christmas and that you will know the peace joy and love of the season in your own lives and in that of your friends and family. Take care and God bless you. With love and prayers as ever. LIFE AND WORK AND CHURCH MAGAZINE I am sure, like myself, you enjoy having your Church Magazine delivered to you by your friendly visitor. At present we are a visitor short. The magazine is important, especially to our elderly and housebound members who are unable to get to church, but are still very interested in what is going on. Visitors can be male or female. If you wish more information or are willing to deliver the magazine quarterly please speak to me at church or by telephone on 01236 754763. Thank you, Elizabeth Russell

Kirk Session Tribute to Anne Clemenson

Anne was born in Bellshill and brought up by her Gran. She had 2 sisters Janet

and Agnes and 2 brothers Alasdair and Alec who died in infancy. She enjoyed a

happy childhood and enjoyed spending time with her parents and her siblings.

Anne did very well at school and really enjoyed learning. She studied languages

and worked for a time as an interpreter with British Airways. She was fluent in

German, French, Italian, Russian and Spanish. Anne later went to teacher

training at Hamilton College, and this was where she was to find a true vocation

for life.

Anne retired from teaching in 1992 but really she never stopped teaching. She

was at this time a member and Elder at McDonald Memorial in Bellshill. In order

to give further service to the Church, Anne underwent training as a Reader and

served since 1995. Although Anne did do some work in other churches she was

attached to New St Andrew’s until she retired in 2012 and had a good and

positive working relationship throughout.

Anne who had become a member here and served on the Kirk Session and as

Presbytery Elder for a number of years, always said she felt that she belonged

here and although officially retired continued to give service to the Church and

her Lord. Anne sang in the choir and really enjoyed being able to be part of

leading worship through music – for Anne loved to sing and to have music

about her.

She was a member of the Thursday Club and enjoyed the fellowship she found

within the club. She loved going on the outings and being a part of the

fellowship.

Anne also loved to go on the Men’s Club outings and always had a lot of fun on

those. Anne was a founder member of our Bible Study Group and her input was

always thought provoking and helpful to those of us who attended.

Anne served on the Discipleship Committee and the Outreach Committee.

Always very supportive of alternative ways to worship and to teach the Good

News

Anne was a member and then Convener of our Fundraising Committee and

worked very hard along with her committee in this area.

Anne enjoyed her time as Presbytery Elder and especially being able to go to

the General Assembly and to hear what was new in the Church. In that respect

Anne never felt she had learned everything – there was always more to learn

and new ideas to think about and to put into practice

Anne is remembered by many of us as someone with a good sense of humour

and fun, with a really infectious laugh. A caring kind and supportive person who

always sought to bring out the best in others. Someone who would always go

the extra mile for others if she could. For Anne always tried to see the good in

others and to see the positive side of situations. Anne always treated others as

individuals and respected their privacy. Someone who was very easy to talk to,

for Anne was a good listener. She gave good advice over the years in a quiet

and unassuming way. She was well loved by young and old alike for her quiet

but supportive nature.

In the wider church Anne served Presbytery as a Reader but also as Sunday

School adviser for a number of years and always sought to pass on ideas to

others.

So a faithful servant to her Lord and to her Church

In many respects Church was Anne’s life and most of what she did revolved

around it. She did tho have other loves and interests too.

She loved her extended family. And she loved her wee dogs, her holidays,

football and rugby, arts and crafts and reading.

In her “spare time “ Anne worked at the Citizens Advice Bureau in Bellshill

So a very busy and active person and yet also a very quiet, humble and private

person.

Anne was then someone who lived a good and active life. She had family she

loved and who loved her over the years. A teaching career which brought her a

great deal of pleasure.

Anne died on Friday 10th May aged 85 years.

She served her Church and her Lord faithfully, and will be greatly missed by

those of us who knew and loved her.

The deep sympathy of the Kirk Session is extended to Anne’s family.

Kirk Session Tribute to Ian Sinclair

Ian was brought up in Glenboig and was one of 3 children with a sister Anna

and a brother Alex. He enjoyed a happy childhood. As a youngster Ian was in

the BB in Glenboig – something which he really enjoyed.

On leaving school Ian trained in computers. He then went on to be a computer

analyst and programmer.

He did his national service in the RAF and was stationed in England

He then returned to his work in computers, working for various companies

amongst which was Honeywells, M&S with whom he travelled all over the

country and abroad, and latterly Wrexham Corrugated from which he retired.

Ian met Margetta at the dancing at Coatbridge Palais. They married in 1959 at

Dunbeth Church. They had a good and happy life together. They had one

daughter Gillian and 2 grandchildren Aaron and Hannah. Ian loved and was

proud of his family.

Ian is remembered as someone who was always very caring, friendly and

sociable. A supportive and encouraging person who always wanted the best for

his family. You could talk to him about anything and he always gave good

advice when asked for it.

7

Family really was the most important part of Ian’s life, and I know that over the

years many happy and positive memories have been made and shared.

Ian did tho have other interest and commitments. Over the years Ian was a

keen footballer – he played amateur football in Coatbridge and finished up

playing for Pollock Juniors. Ian’s other interests included golf, bowling, holidays,

music, chocolate and supporting Airdrie Football Club

Ian is perhaps best known here in the Church as a faithful church attender, a

good friend to many, an Elder and our Roll keeper for over 24 years. Someone

who loved his church, his lord and his church family.

Ian enjoyed relatively good health over the years tho in these past 8 years

suffered from Alzheimers. He was supported through this by his family. He died

on 2nd August aged 86years.

Ian was then someone who lived a good life. He had family he loved and who

loved him in return. A good and positive working life. And leisure pursuits which

brought him a lot of pleasure over the years.

Whilst these past few years have not been easy for Ian or indeed for the family

prior to this Ian was I think very much contented with his lot.

He is I know remembered with love and respect by his friends, his family and

his Church family

The deep sympathy of the Kirk Session is extended to Ian’s family.

SUNDAY SCHOOL/YOUTH GROUP The Sunday School have been enjoying learning about 'Faith' through arts & crafts and some fun group games. For many years we have sponsored children through World Vision. The last 4 years we have sponsored an 8 year old boy called Paulo Julious Chanzi who lives in Kilimatinede, Tanzania. The sponsorship not only benefits Paulo and his family it also has a great impact in the local community, the latest being much improved access to clean water and improved food security within families. These are just a few of the many benefits our sponsorship have brought and will continue to do. We also send birthday & Christmas cards with donations to Paulo and whilst the congregation are celebrating Communion the Sunday School children will be making their individual Christmas cards to Paulo and telling him about themselves and their community. The children will be going to the Pantomime Aladdin in Airdrie town Hall on the 7th December for their Christmas treat. Joyce McClelland, Sunday School Leader, Tel. 427881 or 07931519139

Guides We have a very varied program this session with each patrol picking a different badge to work on. As a Unit we are going to work on the Recycling Badge which our 2 young guiders in training are going to do. We have had a rugby night when members of Waysiders and Drumpellier Rugby team came along to put the girls through their paces. We also had a night showing the girls how to iron their neckies which went down a treat. We also had a Pyjama Party with Pizza. For Christmas the girls are wanting to go Ice Skating so that is being arranged. Rangers This is the new name for our Senior Section which is working away very well and we have 2 young guiders in Christina Work and Samantha Heron. They have been working on Party Planners badge and invited the Guides to a scare trail - they had a great time. The Rangers will also be joining the Guides at the Ice Skating. Alexis Crichton, Guide Guider Acknowledgment – Etta Alexander 7th February 1926 – 2nd August 2019 Catherine and Andrew Alexander wish to record their thanks to all those in the Congregation who sent cards and kind messages of condolence at the time of their Mother’s death at the beginning of August. Did You Know ? About the Birth of Jesus Jesus birth is described only in two of the four Gospels – Matthew and Luke. Can you name the other two Gospels? Matthew mentions the wise men but does not say how many there were only that they brought three gifts. Can you name what the gifts were? Fill in the missing words then re-arrange their first letters to make a new word.

Joseph, the father of Jesus was a _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. He went with his wife _ _ _ _ to Bethlehem to be _ _ _ _ _. There was no _ _ _ _ for them in the _ _ _ but they were able to find

shelter in a _ _ _ _ _ _. King _ _ _ _ _ told the wise men to go to look for the new baby. An _ _ _ _ _ appeared to _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ who were out in the fields and told them to go find the baby Jesus.

There are many people throughout the world who will not get any presents and who will have very little

to eat so spare them a thought and a prayer.

Enjoy everything about Christmas but don’t forget the real celebration is for the birth of Jesus – God’s son.
