Avoid giving a floor rotation student atracheostomy patient unless you will be there tosuction with the student.
State law mandates that students should be underobservation when preforming invasive procedures.
Student assignment…
Since all ICU rooms are directly audible/visible fromthe nursing station, ICU rotation students are ok tosuction tracheostomy or ventilator patients once theyhave been checked-off to do so.
Student assignment...
Student check-offs are located in a black file box inthe department report room. This is kept updatedwith information that I get back from the students.
Only assign tasks to the students that they have beencheck-off on. Example: EZPAP
Student check-offs
Check-offs are accomplished in three separate
phases:
1. Level 1: Watching preceptor perform and askingquestions
2. Level 2: Performing under observation frompreceptor (this is the actual check-off)
3. Level 3: Close Monitoring: Preceptor doesn’t need todirectly observe, but checks with the patient to insurequality, and checks the student’s charting.
Student check-offs…
Always stay involved with patients being cared for
by students through Close Monitoring:
Check with the patients at least once per shift or moreto insure quality therapy.
Check the students charting within a couple of hoursafter the treatment to insure accuracy andcompleteness.
Have the student report to you on each patient aftereach round of therapy.
Stay involved…
