IN MEMORIAM

Our heartfelt condolences go out to

Bill Grossman, Co-Broker/Owner, RE/MAX 212°, Chicago, on the recent

loss of his father.

The RE/MAX hot air balloon was scheduled to make its first ever visit to Chicago on Oct. 8 to celebrate RE/MAX Global Balloon Day, but it wouldn’t be seen along the city’s lakefront as originally planned. Because of concerns that sight of the 75-foot-tall balloon could generate traffic problems on Lake Shore Drive, the balloon was moved to Revere Park, 2509 W. Irving Park Road in the city’s North Center neighborhood.

RE/MAX Global Balloon Day commemorated the 30th anniversary of the first flight of this widely recognized corporate symbol. To mark the event, the RE/MAX balloon was to be fully inflated, weather permitting, and tethered to the ground between 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. During that time, reporter Bonnie Greene of Metro Shadow Traffic Networks broadcasted traffic updates from the balloon on US99 radio’s “Lisa Dent & Ramblin’ Ray” morning show. US99 is touted as being America’s most listened to country radio station.

The event was held in conjunction with RE/MAX hot air balloon flights at locations around the world. In Capetown, the South African flag was flown from a balloon. In Canada, eight RE/MAX balloons flew from various locations across the country. Another balloon took flight over Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. In Denver, morning commuters were treated to the colorful sight of the RE/MAX hot air balloon as they passed through the Denver Tech Center. RE/MAX International inflated the seven-story tall hot air balloon on the front lawn of their headquarters.

“It’s an excellent opportunity to celebrate our company’s heritage,” said Dave Liniger, Chairman and Co-Founder of RE/MAX International. “The RE/MAX brand, including the balloon, is a big part of what’s made our business so successful – it’s a symbol of our commitment to rise above the crowd and provide the most professional real estate services to our clients worldwide.”

The RE/MAX hot air balloon fleet is one of the largest in the world, with more than 100 balloons located on six continents. The distinctive red, white and blue balloon, which represents the international real estate network, has become one of the most recognized corporate images in the world.

Because of the strong brand awareness it creates, the RE/MAX balloon has helped take the international franchisor to the top of several national and international brand rankings, including Advertising Age’s Top 200 U.S. Megabrands, which ranked RE/MAX as the No. 1 real estate franchisor.

Hot Air Balloon Participates In Galena Halloween FestivitiesThe RE/MAX hot air balloon travelled to Galena, on Oct. 31 to participate in a balloon glow from 7 to 9 p.m. along the Galena River in the city’s downtown area. In a balloon glow, hot air balloons are fully inflated and then lighted from within, but remain tethered to the ground.

The event was part of the annual Galena Halloween festivities that culminate with a spectacular parade, which was held this year on Nov. 1. The RE/MAX balloon team also participated in the parade.

The 75-foot-tall RE/MAX balloon is a familiar sight in the skies of northern Illinois, where it frequently appears at community events and visits schools as part of a special educational program about the science and sport of ballooning. Its appearances are sponsored by the 3,400 RE/MAX Sales Associates who serve the real estate needs of the northern Illinois region.

“Short sales” have emerged as a preferred alternative to foreclosures, and RE/MAX now offers property owners who may need to complete a short sale of their home or investment property, a fast way to find the real estate expertise they’ll need to achieve that goal. The regional RE/MAX Web site, www.illinoisproperty.com recently added a special portal on its home page that makes it easy for property owners to contact a RE/MAX agent to handle a short sale. To navigate directly to the portal, go to www.illinoisproperty.com/shortsale.aspx.

“Short sales are definitely more complex than a traditional real estate transaction,” said Jim Merrion, regional director of the RE/MAX network in northern Illinois. Short sales

usually come into play when homeowners find that the apparent value of their residence has fallen below the total amount owed on their existing mortgage loans. “Many lenders will agree to accept the proceeds from a short sale and forgive the rest of

what is owed because it lets the lender avoid the lengthy and costly foreclosure process.

“The seller’s agent has to work with all parties to the transaction and facilitate obtaining the lender’s approval of the sale,” said Merrion. “In fact, it

is not uncommon for a seller to have both a first and second mortgage, which means two lenders are involved and the situation becomes even more challenging. Finding an agent who understands how the process works is an essential first step for any

homeowner facing a short sale situation.” Not long ago, short sales were relatively uncommon, and only a small minority of real estate agents had experience in handling them, but according to Merrion, the number of agents familiar with short sales has expanded substantially in the last two years.

“Starting in the fourth quarter of last year, we have been offering training to our agents in how to handle short sales and foreclosure property. RE/MAX International now provides a similar course through RE/MAX University, a global education source that makes educational programs available via television, the Internet and even hand-held devices,” he said. “Innovations and resources of this type help us maintain the reputation of having the most experienced and educated real estate professionals in the industry.”

RE/MAX International Inc., one of the leading real estate brands in the world, recently announced that it has added more than 500 new franchises to its global network in the first three quarters of 2008. RE/MAX is represented in 69 countries with more than 105,000 Sales Associates and is also aggressively working on expansions into countries such as Brazil, India, Uruguay, and Egypt.

Notwithstanding the current economic conditions, RE/MAX continues to sell franchises and expand in the United States and Canada, with more than 200 new franchises sold during first nine months of this year. Many of the sales were made to existing real estate offices that chose to join the RE/MAX Network.

“New franchisees are joining RE/MAX because of our worldwide brand recognition, cost effective training, outstanding Web presence and excellent lead generation for agents, free of charge,” said Peter Gilmour, senior vice president for Franchise Sales & Brokerage Operations at RE/MAX International. “What sets us apart from our competition is our unique value proposition designed to help Sales Associates and Broker/Owners succeed in the current market.”

In the most recent Entrepreneur Franchise 500 survey, RE/MAX is among the Top 10 franchise organizations in four different categories and has been the highest ranked real estate franchisor for eight of the last 10 years.

Jim Merrion, regional director of RE/MAX Northern Illinois, reports that the same trends RE/MAX is seeing worldwide are impacting the industry in the Chicago area and other parts of Illinois.

“We’re seeing increasing inquiries from many independent real estate offices about joining our local network,” Merrion said. “We’re especially interested in adding offices in the City of Chicago, and we think there are ample opportunities to do that with quality

Given the topic, it is no surprise that the session was exceptionally well attended, and those in the audience also had the chance to hear from and ask questions of a panel made up of top producing RE/MAX agents drawn from one of the leading Mastermind groups in the region.

Runs/Walks for the Cure in a Big Way!

On September 27, thousands of men, women and children came to run or walk in the Komen “Race for the Cure,” which was held in Grant Park, Chicago. “Race for the Cure” is a special philanthropic effort coordinated by the Susan B. Komen Foundation to fight and end breast cancer by raising funds for research. Races are scheduled throughout the year and across the country. RE/MAX has been the official real estate partner of the Breast Cancer Survivor Program since 1992. Several RE/MAX Northern Illinois offices formed teams and provided volunteers for this very special event.

Team RE/MAX Suburban (upper right) was 30 members strong this year and raised a minimum of $2,374 that day. (Seventy-five percent of the funds raised for the Komen Foundation stay in the Chicagoland community in the form of grants, while 25% went for scientific research and education.) The RE/MAX Suburban Team was comprised of the following members (Their Division Race Rankings are in parentheses): Lynn and Bill Fairfield (1st), Marco Amidei, Brenda and Tom Baczek, Maureen Brand, Amy Bucks, Jessica Bucks, Lisa Bucks, Marilyn Dopler, Catherine Gizella, Elizabeth Hart Hinkle, Linda Longmeyer, Nancy Manisco (9th), Emily Nelson, Jim Nelson Jr., Sandy and James Nelson Sr. (5th), Cassie Orme, Ron and Susan Pickard, Joan Routledge, Morgan, Susan,

10

Sydney and Taylor Schulhof, Laura Swinden, Evelyn Thomaseon, John Wersyn, Peter Wojciechowski.

RE/MAX Unlimited Northwest Sales Associates Cindy Eich, Lee Bialek, Colleen Nikolich and Deenie Pomilia (below, left to right) also volunteered at the Komen Race for the Cure. Instead of working in the Survivor Tent, they helped out on the trolley, which was provided for those who wanted to participate but could not walk or run the course. They decorated the trolley then assisted the participants throughout the ride that morning.

RE/MAX Elite, Hinsdale, is organizing a “Miracle Day” fundraiser to raise money for Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago. The event will be held in the office parking lot next to the RE/MAX Elite building at 34 S. Vine, Hinsdale and will include baked good and fun activities for children and adults alike. This is a community wide fundraiser and all are invited! For more information, call (630) 655-2300 or (630) 810-1900.
