Message from the NESA Board of Directors:

The March Board meeting approved the formation of a Fiber Arts Club at NESA. We welcome this new club which will be involved in felt making, fabric and thread dyeing and other skills not previously shared at our Centre. People interested in finding out more can inquire at the front desk. Remember, members can attend two meetings of a club, at no cost, to find out if they would like to become members.

NESA extends a very warm welcome to our 349 new members, thank you for joining us.

Several Committees are working to develop ways to make NESA better able to serve our membership. One committee is working to revise the IT infrastructure so we might move to on-line registration and payment, an improved website, and more efficient ways to communicate with members. Another committee is working to update our building plans to ensure we are included in the long term City facilities building plans. In the next couple of months members will be asked to fill out a short survey about what you believe are our future space needs. A realistic well documented plan will help us in discussions about those needs.

In the last month the Council of Governors made payment to the Association from earnings of the Sustainability Fund for members who required financial assistance in order to participate in clubs and activities. Please remember if you, or someone you know could use assistance, this service can be accessed through our outreach workers. Assistance is completely confidential. No senior should be unable to take advantage of the opportunities available at NESA for financial reasons.

Four Board positions must be filled at the Annual General Meeting May 18th. Some excellent candidates have already come forward however, there is still not a full slate of candidates. Please consider what you might be able to contribute to making NESA better for all of us. Want more information? Leave your name at the front desk and you will be contacted, and invited for coffee to have your questions answered.

Thank you to the Staff and Volunteers for their efforts during registration, your hard work made the process a success. Thanks also to the majority of members who followed the guidelines for registration. Your co-operation makes a tough job a lot easier. When we work together we all succeed.

Hugh Newell, Board President

Message from the Executive Director:

The staff would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers and members for their help and cooperation in making our first day of Spring registration run smoothly. Classes are starting to fill up - some more than others. Those classes not meeting minimum numbers before they start could be in danger of cancellation. Please register soon to ensure the class you want will run.

The NESA Board and the Program Committee are looking at some large programming challenges NESA is facing. We are rapidly running out of space in many of our rooms, for example, the Fitness Studio is used all day, every day and most evenings. Many other rooms are also booked solid. It is becoming more and more difficult to schedule classes and instructors to meet all the needs of our members. Many classes are also oversubscribed and we have little flexibility to add additional sessions. As a publicly funded organization, NESA must ensure all members have equal opportunity to services and classes, thus the “first come first served” approach.

NESA is also in the process of transformation to an integrated computerized system which should make things from your end more efficient. This will include on-line registrations. We recognize some seniors do not have internet connection or a home computer; we will keep your needs in mind as we develop new processes. These changes will not happen overnight, and we will keep you apprised of changes as they happen.

Program Staff and the various Board Committees meet regularly to deal with issues and concerns. If you have suggestions or concerns regarding programs, registration or other issues, please drop us a note at the office or in the lobby Suggestion Box. Your constructive feedback is welcome and much appreciated.

Josie Leiter

Facility Information Too Hot, Too Cold?

As we enter early spring, the outdoor weather can fluctuate between a freezing -20 to a balmy +20 .... in the same week! Our building's old Heating/Cooling system is not always able to keep up with frequent changes. And, if it's consistently warm for a week, it may be impossible to cool the building adequately. Also air conditioning will not be restarted until there is no chance of freezing (May?).

For your comfort, dress so you can take off or put on a layer, instead. Thanks

NESA BOARD MEMBER NOMINATIONS

Our NESA Bylaws governing Board Members allow for rejuvenation of the Board of Directors on a yearly basis at the May Annual General Meeting.

Bylaw 4.7 states that: “A member of the Board having served as a Director for two consecutive terms, four (4) years, shall not be eligible for re-election until one year has elapsed.” ”

As a result every year we will need several new Board Members. If you have some knowledge and/or experience in one of the following areas:

(a) Human Resources, (b) Programming, (c) Finance, (d) Communications & Advertising, or (e) Fund Raising, then the NESA BOARD NEEDS YOU.

If you are interested in becoming an active leader in our senior centre, please join the Board of Directors by leaving your name and phone number at the office. They will pass it on to one of the Past Presidents who are required to search for new Board Members. One of us will contact you and we will buy you a coffee and answer any questions you may have with regard to what is required to be a Board Member.

Steve Shamchuk

BYLAW CHANGE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING THURSDAY, MAY 18, 2-4 pm

Our current bylaws stipulate that NESA cannot borrow money. This bylaw prevents NESA from having a credit card as this is considered a form of borrowing. From time to time NESA makes purchases where a credit card is required. To do this a member of the staff uses their personal credit card and is subsequently reimbursed. To eliminate the need for staff to use their personal credit card for NESA purchases we are proposing a change to the bylaw to allow NESA to obtain a credit card with a small credit limit to be used for these purchases.

Current Bylaw 4.9: “The Board of Directors of the Association shall have no borrowing power.”

Proposed Bylaw Change: “NESA, for the purpose of carrying out its objectives, may borrow, raise,

receive or secure the payment of money in any manner it sees fit. All its

powers in this regard may be exercised by the Board, providing that the

amount not exceed $10,000.”

PROGRAM NEWS

To all of our amazing NESA members – We just wanted to take this time to give a special thanks to everyone for being so patient and understanding during what started off as a very hectic beginning to the winter session here at the Centre. As many of you know we encountered a number of unanticipated changes to our fitness courses delivery due to absences from some of our instructors. Fortunately for NESA we were able to secure substitute instructors for all but one class, minimizing the amount of class interruptions and cancellations for the many members that could have been affected by this.

NESA would like to give a special thanks to Nora, Dave, Maribel, Bev, and Barb for so promptly changing their schedules and accommodating the needs of the members at NESA during this busy time! We would also like to thank each and every member here for being so welcoming, accepting, and inviting of our amazing substitute instructors. Speaking from experience, we know how overwhelming it can be trying to ‘fill the shoes’ of another instructor, especially on such short notice! So, a big thanks to all of our amazing members here at NESA for making our instructors feel right at home! It is such an honor to work for such fantastic people!

Exercise should be a staple in everyone’s daily routine. It not only raises energy, controls weight and helps maintain overall health, but it also improves sleep and combats fatigue and depression. An additional benefit is that activity slows the progression of disease.

Time to infuse your vivid, fertile and rich imagination through memory and experiences in a drama class that will bring participants enjoyment and enlightenment.

Whatever the activity, actors find truth in what they say and do while connecting it to themselves and engaging the audience.

The class includes warm-ups, drama games and storytelling, that center on listening, concentration and focusing energy. Learn how to be present in the moment, the wellspring of creativity.

A challenge yes, but enormously rewarding.

When: Mondays, April 3rd, 10th and 24th, 1:30 - 3:30pm Cost: $5.00 pp (register early space is limited)
