SHILLONG: Health offi-cials in the state are bank-ing on awareness pro-grammes to achieve cent percent immunisation under theCentre’s Intensified Mis-sion Indradhanush.
RR Marak, joint secretaryin Health and FamilyWelfare Department, said onMonday with only 62 percent coverage, the statecould not meet its target inthe last vaccination pro-gramme.
“The last programme ofMission Indradhanush wasnot so satisfactory. I regretto say that we could notachieve the target set forus… Public awareness isthe most important thing ifwe have to make the pro-gramme a success,” Maraksaid at the launch of the In-tensified Mission Indradha-nush at Ganesh Das Govern-

ment Maternal and ChildHealth Hospital on Monday.
World Health Organisa-tion (WHO) consultantNeelanjan Roy, who was atthe launch programme, toldThe Shillong Times, that fig-ures show that Meghalaya“is not doing well at all”.
“In fact, Meghalaya andNagaland are at the bottomof the table with Nagalandat the lowest and Megha-laya at the second lowest asper a National Family Health
Survey done a couple ofyears back… 62 per cent isvery less. We are aiming totouch 90 per cent by the endof December 2018 and onlythen sufficient protectionwill come to the children,”he said.
When asked on the im-provement, Roy said, “Wehave already conducted 16rounds of immunization andthere has been an improve-ment but not to the requiredlevels. We want to push up
to 90 per cent and above.”Infant mortality rate in
Meghalaya has shown adeclining trend but there ismore to achieve, Roy point-ed out.
Ignorance, religious be-lief and reluctance of parentsare some of the bottlenecksand there is a need forinforming people that immu-nisation prevents fatal dis-eases in children, said Mar-ak.
There will be special fo-
cus on seven districts —East and West Jaintia Hills,East and South West KhasiHills, North Garo Hills, SouthWest and West Garo Hillsand only Nongstoin area inWest Khasi Hills — wherethe percentage of immunisa-tion is low.
Roy said the seven dis-tricts are considered as highrisk as children are not giv-en vaccines on time. “Wehave noticed that pregnantwomen and children belowtwo years who have not re-ceived their vaccine dosesin time are in greater risk ofdiseases which can also re-sult in death,” he added.
“The Intensified MissionIndradhanush will continuefor the next four months forseven working days. We willhave to pull up our socksand go to the problem areasand try to bridge the gap andmake the programme a suc-cess,” Marak said.
