Welcome to the North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festival, now in its 11th yearFor those of you who come regularly to this festival, you will notice some changes, again based on feedback I get. The festival covers rather a large area and this can cause long journeys to the start of the walks. To try to reduce this problem, this year I have split the festival into two parts.

The first half of the festival, from Friday through to Tuesday inclusive will have all the walks within the North Devon area. This means that you can base yourself in Ilfracombe, Barnstaple, Bideford and the surrounding villages that include accommodation.

The second half, from Wednesday through to the following Sunday inclusive will move across to Exmoor and the Quantock Hills. This means that you can then base yourself in Lynton and Lynmouth, Porlock, Minehead, Dunster or Dulverton and the surrounding villages. The festival map on the centrefold shows the towns and where the walks are.

If you come to the North Devon walks, try to base yourself centrally around your chosen walks. Then on Tuesday evening, if you are keeping with the festival, move to your new location within Exmoor for those walks.

I am doing my best to keep this popular walking festival going and making it sustainable. This means that I am having to continue charging for all our walks to help towards the costs of running the festival. Some of the walks include extras such as cream teas and the walk ticket price may includes these. I hope you agree the added value of our friendly and knowledgeable guides, coupled with our beautiful countryside, still makes it a cheap day out.

I would like to thank all our private guides, wardens and rangers for their continued support. The festival would not be able to continue without support from the Exmoor National Park, the North Devon AONB, the South West Lakes Trust, the National Trust and the Crown Estate Dunster. How to BookThis year’s festival is in two halves, starting in North Devon until Tuesday evening and then moving across to Exmoor and the Quantock Hills from Wednesday to the following Sunday. If you want to keep with the festival over the changeover you may want to choose two locations to stay at, both central to your chosen walks.

1, Choose the area and time you want to come.

2, Choose your walks, noting the distance, the degree of difficulty and the pace at which the walk is likely to proceed. Please do not over-stretch yourself and consider your fellow walkers.

3, If you need accommodation, locate somewhere fairly central to your chosen walks. You may need to change accommodation if staying over from Tuesday to Wednesday.

4, To find accommodation please support the adverts in this brochure or call the local tourist office. Without the support of our advertisers and sponsors, our walking festival could not take place.

5, To book your walks either:

Go to the festival website www.exmoorwalkingfestival.co.uk and book online. Payment is through Paypal but you do not need to have a Paypal account as you can use your credit card through their website.

Or:

Phone our Booking Line on 01271 863001, Ilfracombe Tourist Information Centre, between 10.00am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday, 10.30am to 4.30pm Saturday and closed Sunday. They will be able to make the walk bookings for you online. Please have the walk number(s) ready to give the operator.

If you have not been able to look at the website and check availability of the walk tickets, please be ready with an alternative.

The walks book quickly during January and February. Once a walk is full, unless there is a cancellation, you will not be able to get on that walk. This is to avoid spoiling the walk for everyone.

Confirmation of your booking will be provided from the website or posted to you if you phone your booking through.

Walk Ticket DiscountsThis year we are offering a discount on walk tickets that are purchased in multiples. If you book 5 walks or more in one transaction we will give you a 10% discount on the ticket price. If a group of 10 people wish to book on one walk in one transaction we will offer a 15% discount.

To get these discounts these bookings must be made through our telephone booking line 01271 863001. They cannot be made on the website.

Additional WalksWe are holding some walks in reserve to enable us to adapt to changing public sector circumstances. There is, therefore, a good chance that extra walks may become available between now and the festival.

We will do our utmost not to change any walks so please book them in the normal way. Keep an eye on the festival website for any additional walks that might become available.

Cancellation of WalksWe reserve the right to cancel any walk that is undersubscribed or for reasons and circumstances beyond our control. This will normally happen between 10 to 7 days prior to the walk commencing. The few participants that are affected will be contacted and offered another walk or their money back for that walk.

Please give a contact telephone number when booking that we can contact you on in the 10 day run-up to the festival walks.

Data Protection Act 1998Your details will be held on a database on making a booking. These will be used to contact you should there be a problem with the walk(s) you have chosen and to tell you about future North Devon and Exmoor Walking Festivals.

If you would like information on the festival by email at any time then please supply your email address when booking. This helps save paper and money.

Your information will not be passed on to any third party. You can opt-out of this database after the festival has taken place and unsubscribe from any email newsletters at any time.

Preparing for the WalksPlease read the walks details carefully and use this information to help you choose walks suitable for your ability.

Please bring suitable outdoor clothing and footwear. The guides, at their own discretion, have the right to refuse to take participants who are not suitably attired for the conditions.

Some walks require packed lunches and others have food included during the walk. The cost of the food is not always included in the walk ticket price. The price indicates if it is included. If it is not included then please pay the provider before leaving. Please show courtesy and do not eat your own sandwiches at a food provider that is included as part of the walk.

Dogs are welcome on walks which state this. Because of the time of year, we request that dogs are kept under close control because of ground nesting birds and young stock in fields. If a walk does not accept dogs it is because we know the walk passes through sensitive areas.

Grades of WalksEasy: Height gained and lost: 5m to 20m per mile. Follows easily defined paths and are sometimes of shorter duration.

Easy to Moderate: Height gained and lost: 20m to 45m per mile. A walk with some ascents and descents on paths and tracks with varying surfaces.

Moderate: Height gained and lost: 45m to 75m per mile. A walk with some notable ascents and descents. Suitable for the averagely fit walker.

Moderate to strenuous: Height gained and lost: 75m to 120m per mile. A walk taking in one or more steep, physically testing ascents and descents. Not recommended for inexperienced or unfit walkers.

Description: The land has been permanently lived in through the later Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age; seen Roman invasion, Anglo-Saxon settlement, Viking raiders and Norman Conquest. These have all left their mark on the landscape, from Prehistoric barrows and Iron Age hillforts to Norman castles but the land has remained settled and farmed to the present day.

Directions to start: Go to the A39 between Bideford and Kilkhampton. From Bideford direction, drive 7.6 miles from Bideford roundabout to Bucks Mills cross roads. Turn right here and follow this road down hill for about 3/4 mile to the car park. The walk starts here.

Description: A very varied walk following part of the Tarka Trail passing Tarka’s birthplace, Beam Weir where herons often fish, then along a small tributary ideal for otters to play before climbing out of the valley to visit the remains of an old Priory. From there a delightful country walk before returning to Monkleigh for a cream tea.

Directions to start: From Bideford take A386 in a southerly direction towards Great Torrington. After 2.1 miles turn right on to A388 towards

Monkleigh. After 2.2 miles at sharp right-hand bend turn left and shortly bear right towards Torrington. Go down hill and after Hilton Road on left, turn right into Village Hall car park. The walk starts here.

If coming from Barnstaple direction, just before reaching Braunton pass a petrol station on your right as you approach a new roundabout. Turn left here to the next roundabout. Description: This walk takes in the rolling hills of Devon, passing along tributaries of the River Taw as well as part of the main river itself. It goes through some of the Eggesford forest and follows a beautiful wooded valley upstream to reach the small hamlet of Hollocombe before returning to the start.

Directions to start: Go to the A377 between Barnstaple and Eggesford. This road follows the railway along the same valley, so passes each railway station. From Barnstaple pass the King’s Nympton station and then after 1 mile at the next cross roads turn right towards Burrington. Cross the railway and river and then take the next left. At the next fork bear right. On reaching Ashreigney bear left towards the church and park by the church. The walk starts here.

Directions to start: Go to the A386 between Bideford and Great Torrington. Just before reaching the hill up to Great Torrington, at the bridge over the River Torridge and Tarka Trail, turn left into the Puffing Billy and follow through to the overflow car park by keeping left and then right to it. Description: This spectacular walk is a figure of eight centred on Croyde. It will take you out to the impressive rocky outcrop of Baggy Point and across a beautiful sandy beach along the South West Coast Path to round Saunton Down before climbing on to the top of the down for some impressive panoramic views. The walk then descends back to the village where you can find refreshments.

Directions to start: Go to A361 between Ilfracombe and Barnstaple. Go to traffic lights at Braunton. Turn towards Croyde on B3231. After 4.5 miles turn left into Jones Hill in Croyde village. Turn immediately left into Village Hall car park. The walk starts here.

Description: This walk is in the heart of Tarka Country, taking in part of the Tarka Trail that is close to where Tarka was born. Beam Weir is a good spot for seeing heron fishing and even otters playing. The walk then gains height to overlook the Torridge valley before returning to the common.

Directions to start: Go to Great Torrington on A386. If coming from Bideford direction, pass

the Puffing Billy pub and continue up the hill. At the top turn left opposite the B3227 road to Langtree, pass the toilet block and continue ahead ignoring car park on your left, to go down to the lower car park. The walk starts here.

Description: This walk takes in the watershed of a meandering stream called the Crooked Oak. The walk passes through Alswear where the stream meets the larger River Mole before returning through Mariansleigh and walking alongside the stream to the start.

Directions to start: Go to the A361 between Barnstaple and Tiverton. Go to the roundabout at Bish Mill Gate, junction with B3227 into South Molton. Follow this road towards South Molton and at the pub in Bish Mill turn hard left up Silcombe Hill. Near the top fork right to Bishop’s Nympton. Follow this road into the village and park in the small car park by the school. The walk starts by the church.

Description: Mary Breeds, well-known local expert on the flora and fauna of the North Devon coast, AONB and Biosphere is giving an illustrated talk, looking at the wildlife of this special area.

Directions to start: Go to Braunton on the A361. At the traffic lights turn towards Croyde on B3231. Turn left just after the Pelican crossing into the car park. The Centre is on the right as you enter the car park.

The North Devon Coast is breathtakingly beautiful and internationally recognised for being so with its AONB (Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty) designation. There’s simply no match for our dramatic cliffs and headlands, expansive and golden sanded beaches, coastal waterfalls and ancient woodlands too, all waiting to be explored. The area is steeped in fascinating geology, wildlife and history stretching from the boundary of Exmoor National Park at Combe Martin to Marsland Mouth on the Cornish border, a staggering 66 square miles.

The small and local team responsible for managing this AONB are a huge part of the reason our coastline remains as beautiful and unspoilt as it is and that our distinct coastal heritage is so celebrated. The AONB promote active enjoyment of the fantastic coastal landscape with a website full of useful local information and a fantastic selection of downloadable walks in the area. Directions to start: Go to A361 between Ilfracombe and Barnstaple. Go to traffic lights at Braunton. Turn towards Croyde on B3231. After 0.7 miles turn left into Moor Lane. After 0.8 miles at T-junction turn left and follow this road for 0.8 miles to car park at Braunton Burrows. The walk starts here.

Guide: John Breeds Pace: Moderate Difficulty: Easy Route: Yarde - Petersmarland - Winswell - Tarka Trail - Yarde Start: East Yarde car park Car parking cost: free Description: This walk starts at Yarde Orchard where there is a camping barn and refreshments. It is on the Tarka Trail, part of the old railway line to the quarries at Meeth. The walk takes in part of this walk as well as the attractive neighbouring countryside. Refreshments can be taken at the Yarde Orchard cafe afterwards.

Cost: £6.00, any refreshments are extra

Directions to start: Go to the A386 between Great Torrington and Hatherleigh. From Torrington keep on this road for 3 miles to turn off right towards Peters Marland and Winswell. Keep on this road for almost a mile where is crosses the old railway and turn left into the car park. The walk starts here. From Hatherleigh direction keep on the A386 also for 9.8 miles before turning left.

11Ilfracombe and Combe Martin. Coming from Combe Martin, having left the village, at the top of the hill turn left towards Berrynarbor. Coming from Ilfracombe, at the Sawmill Inn turn right towards Berrynarbor. On reaching the church follow the sign to the car park which is the first left from Combe Martin direction and second right from Ilfracombe direction. The car park is shortly on the right, with toilets. The walk starts here.

Description: This walk takes in an attractive part of the River Taw valley, one of the larger rivers of North Devon. The walk takes in both sides of this river valley, passing through open country and forestry woodland. Chawleigh village is visited about halfway.

Directions to start: Eggesford is on the A377, Barnstaple to Crediton road. Coming from Barnstaple follow this road for about 19 miles and turn right over the level crossing by the station. As the road climbs, turn left towards the garden centre and church. The walk starts by the church.

Description: A country walk which passes through some of the old original bartons. Bartons were the main farmsteads that were landlord to the smaller adjoining farms and are still impressive buildings in their own right. Most are listed buildings, some with superb gardens the walk passes through. Teas are available at Marwood Gardens after the walk (not included).

Directions to start: From Ilfracombe take the B3230 (back road) towards Barnstaple. At Two Pots junction above Ilfracombe leave this road bearing right towards Woolacombe. At the staggered cross roads at Hore Down Gate, turn left and immediately right and follow this road for 4 miles and at Wigley Cross turn right to Marwood. Opposite the entrance to the gardens bear right to the church and park in the church car park. The walk starts here. From Barnstaple go to Pilton to go through Pilton High Street. Follow the road to the left at the top and from here keep on this road for 2.7 miles to Guineaford. At Guineaford turn left to Marwood and bear left to the church car park.

Description: This walk starts in the pretty village of Dolton and then follows rolling countryside before reaching the Halsdon Woods Nature Reserve. This is a Devon Wildlife Trust Reserve with a wonderful diversity of wildlife. The walk skirts the River Taw with evidence of otters along the banks.

Cost: £6.00

Directions to start: Go to the A3124 between Great Torrington and Winkleigh. If coming from Great Torrington, pass through Beaford and continue to Dolton Beacon where the B3217 crosses. Turn towards Dolton and on reaching the village take the first turning on the left, Barfield Road and then the first left into Barfield Close. Park in the public car park there. The walk starts here.

Guide: Keith Davis Pace: Moderate Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous Route: Mortehoe - Damage Barton - Lee - Bull Point - Morte Point - Mortehoe Start: Mortehoe car park Car parking cost: pay and display Description: This superb walk will take you past the 15th Century Damage Barton and down to Lee Bay. The walk continues along an outstanding section of the South West Coast Path to Bull Point lighthouse along this rugged, beautiful and treacherous coastline, continuing around Rockham Bay and Morte Point.

From here go towards South Molton on the A399 for 0.2 mile and at the brow turn right towards the reservoir. Follow this road for just under 1 mile and turn left into The Discovery Centre/ Calvert Trust Exmoor, once on the drive take an immediate left following the Discovery Centre arrow to the car park. Directions to start: Go to the A39 between Minehead and Bridgwater. From Minehead direction on reaching West Quantoxhead (St Audries) pass the 30mph sign and at the oblique cross roads by the town sign, turn right along a small lane, Staple Lane. At next cross roads cross straight over into Hill Lane which becomes a track. Follow it alongside the woods on your right to the car park. The walk starts here.

The walk starts here. From Dulverton follow the B3223 beside the river to where the road climbs away from the river and turn left by Marsh Bridge. Then as above.

Directions to start: Go to the A39 between Porlock and Minehead. From Porlock direction, go round the sharp bend by the turning off to Allerford and shortly turn right by Piles Mill. Follow this small road for 1.5 miles to a small cross roads. Go straight over and up the steep hill until the road forks. Take the right fork and then turn right into the large car park. The walk starts here.

Pass through Barbrook and now go through four hairpin bends. At the fifth hairpin continue ahead on to the B3223 towards Simonsbath. Do not cross the river bridge immediately at the start of this road but immediately turn right and immediately right again into the Combe Park car park. Coming from Lynmouth, follow the A39 past Watersmeet and at the hairpin bend turn left, immediately right and immediately right again into Combe Park car park. The walk starts here.

Description: This walk shows the contrast between forestry managed woodland and coppiced ancient oak woodland. It passes through open moorland and wooded combes to then follow the high ridgeway, an important highway since the Stone Age with evidence of their settlements.

Directions to start: Go to the A39 between Minehead and Bridgwater. At the traffic lights

to Nether Stowey, turn towards the village. Pass Coleridge’s Cottage on the right and at the clock tower turn right towards Over Stowey, along Castle Street. Shortly turn left along South Lane signed to Quantock Forest and Ramscombe. In 0.9 miles, at Marsh Mills cross roads turn right by Over Stowey Cricket Club signed to Ramscombe. Shortly ignore turning to Aley continuing ahead towards Over Stowey. In 0.2 miles take the next left, Adscombe Lane and follow for 0.5 miles to Adscombe Farm. The road now turns right but continue ahead for a further 1.1 miles to the car park with toilets. Pass the toilets and bear right to the northern part of the field. The walk starts here.

Description: This is a breathtaking walk offering panoramic views of the coast and over the beautiful oak clad East Lyn river valley. The walk passes through Lynmouth and out to the Valley of Rocks before returning through the West Lyn valley and along The Cleaves.

Directions to start: Go to the A39 between Lynmouth and Blackmoor Gate. From the Blackmoor Gate direction (A399/A39) follow the A39 towards Lynmouth. Pass through Barbrook and now go through four hairpin bends. At the fifth hairpin continue ahead on to the B3223 towards Simonsbath. Do not cross the river bridge immediately at the start of this road but immediately turn right and immediately right again into the Combe Park car park. Coming from Lynmouth, follow the A39 past Watersmeet and at the hairpin bend turn left, immediately right and immediately right again into Combe Park car park. The walk starts here.

a small lane, Staple Lane. At next cross roads cross straight over into Hill Lane which becomes a track. Follow it alongside the woods on your right to the car park. The walk starts here.

Description: Join the SW Lakes conservation officer on an informative walk beside the lake showing you the wildlife that lives in this man-made habitat and the projects taking place to enhance this beautiful area. The walk finishes with a short boat ride across the lake to the jetty below the tearooms.


Directions to start: Follow the A396 or B3224 to Wheddon Cross. At Wheddon Cross follow the B3224 towards Raleghs Cross and Taunton. After 7.5 miles turn right on to B3190 for 1.2 miles. Just after radio masts turn right (Robbery Gate) and follow this road for 2.7 miles to Bessom Cross just by the lake. Cross the bridge over the lake and then take the next left. Follow this small road and take the second left to the tea-rooms car park. The walk starts here.

Follow this small road for 1.5 miles to a small cross roads. Go straight over and up the steep hill until the road forks. Take the right fork and then turn right into the large car park. The walk starts here.

Directions to start: Go to the A358 between Williton and Taunton. Take the road to West Bagborough and follow it through the hamlet. Keep going ahead as it becomes single track climbing steeply uphill. At the T junction, Birches Corner, turn left to reach the car park. The walk starts here.

During the walk you will pass the ruins of a medieval village, close to the Badgeworthy Water, pass the waterslide on the Lankcombe brook, visit Cloud Farm for a cream tea and see Oare church where Carver shot Lorna on her wedding day.


Directions to start: Go to County Gate on the Devon/Somerset border on the A39 above Lynmouth. Take the road down to Oare and Malmsmead. At Oare church bear right to Malmsmead. On reaching Malmsmead cross the ford or bridge and go round the buildings to the other side and park on the right in the car parks. The walk starts here.

The walk passes the Castle and gains height to oversee Dunster village, the rolling hills of Exmoor and the sea across to Wales.

Description: This is a wonderfully varied walk. It starts inland following the Blackmoor Water upstream to follow Ladies Mile, an old promenade from Trentishoe Manor. The walk then gains height on to Trentishoe Common before reaching the coast path along the high cliffs. One section of this part of the coast path can be vertiginous for some so please consider this before booking.

Directions to start: Go to the A399 between Combe Martin and South Molton. From the Combe Martin direction follow the road through all the bends and when the road finally straightens look for the first turning on the left to Hunter’s Inn. Follow this road all the way to Hunter’s Inn and park in the car park opposite the toilets. The walk starts here.

Description: From Landacre Bridge the walk crosses Withypool Common and Withypool Hill to the picturesque village of Withypool with interesting church, pub and village shop. R.D. Blackmore stayed at the Royal Oak whilst writing Lorna Doone. The walk then returns along the Barle valley to Landacre. This walk has stunning scenery with great possibilities of seeing red deer, buzzards and ponies.

Directions to start: Go to A361 between Barnstaple and Tiverton. Go to Aller Cross, junction A361 and A399. Go towards Tiverton, M5 for 1.6 miles and turn left to North Molton. After 2.2 miles go through North Molton, keeping on the wider road towards Withypool. After 4.2 miles at Sandyway Cross continue ahead. After a further 0.8 miles at Withypool Cross bear left for a further 1.8 miles to Landacre bridge in the valley. The walk starts here.

Directions to start: Go to the A39 between Lynmouth and Porlock. From Lynmouth go up Countisbury Hill towards Porlock. At the top of Countisbury Hill pass the Blue Ball Inn continue over the brow and just the other side of the second cattle grid turn right to Brendon. Go down the steep hill and turn right over the two old bridges. Turn right in the village to follow it through to the village hall as one leaves the village, on the right. The walk starts here.

As the UK’s longest National Trail at 630 miles, from Minehead on the edge of Exmoor to the shores of Poole harbour, the South West Coast Path is a challenge that few people tackle all at once. It takes about six weeks to complete, so walking a stretch at a time makes it a more realistic challenge for most and one that makes for an adventurous short break. The sense of achievement at the end of it will last forever.In North Devon and Exmoor alone you will discover amazing wildlife and scenery as you journey through an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the North Devon Biosphere Reserve and Exmoor National Park. If that’s not enough the entire trail also gives access to two world heritage sites, a UNESCO Geopark and many National Nature Reserves.
