On behalf of the NDHSCA, I would like to congratulate the State Champions, Coach of the Year, and the POWERade Senior Athlete of the Year winners that were crowned this winter! There were many great championship games and tournaments that provided a great amount of excitement to the thousands of fans.

I think it is spring, but I am not sure that it is officially here for good. Many spring sports got off to a slow start and coaches have had to be very creative and patient for the past two months. I applaud the coaches, athletes, parents, and administrators from around the state on their dedication to making the spring schedules work.

I would once again, encourage our coaches to continue to be ac-tive in the association. Attending the state meetings and volunteer-ing to serve on the advisory com-mittees gives you a voice in your sport.

The membership is at an all time high for active mem-bers. The continued growth of our membership shows the strength of our organization.

The state convention

will be in Mandan this year. We have lined up many great speakers for the convention and we are looking forward to a great turnout on July 26-29!

Make sure to register by

going to NDHSCA.com. All of the forms along with some of the speakers and itinerary can be found there.

Good luck with the rest of

the 2010-11 school year and we look forward to seeing you in Mandan at the end of July!

Some of the other sport sessions will be held at venues to enable speakers to use courts, tracks, fields or special equipment in their presentations.

As of April fifteenth, clinic speakers are nearly complete for basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track & field, volleyball and wrestling. Specific confirmed speakers can be viewed on the Association’s website.

The NDHSAA Board of Directors directed the staff to begin implementation of online rules clinics for 2010-2011. However, the advisory committee meetings will continue; these are so useful in com-municating the future direction for advisory recom-mendations in each sport.

In addition to the advisory committee sports’ round tables, the NDHSAA Staff will present several sessions to lead coaches through accessing online rules clinics through MVP. This will also be another opportunity for coaches to learn about MVP.

For the fourth year, Travis Dressler and the Uni-versal Athletics will sponsor the social on Wednes-day night. Last year they introduced our coaches to an interesting and exciting race program. The golf scramble results will be shared with the prizes for appropriate scramble contests. This proved to be an unbelievable event last year. Universal Athletics has offered to provide a percentage of the prize to the Gelaine Orvik Scholarship Fund

Travis informed NDHSCA that Universal Athlet-ics was planning for 200 coaches to attend the social two years ago and NDHSCA has superseded expec-tations each year. With a taco bar and beverages provided by Universal Athletics, the coaches were very happy to attend. The afternoon golf scramble will be held at the River Creek Golf Course in south Bismarck. This golf course is substantially less diffi-cult, and also less expensive. Only seventy spots exist for the scramble and obviously, those who pay early and register at the golf desk on Wednesday morning earliest, receive tee times.

The Banquet is held on Thursday evening with the Coach of the Year awards, Assistant Coach of the Year awards, Junior High School Coach of the Year awards, Scholarships, Awards of Merit, Special Recognition awards and Hall of Fame Plaques and rings being presented. This is one of the most pres-tigious evenings of our Association’s activities. We are especially to recognize the personnel associated with Coca Cola/POWERade with Awards of Merit.

The speaker and topic schedule will be entered on the website as they arrive. Additional speakers and topics will be added to the schedule as speak-ers confirm their topics. We are especially proud of our speaker roster and their curriculum.

All coaches are urged to register and register early! NDHSCA has not sent confirmation of mail-ings in the past and plan to continue that procedure. A receipt will be attached to each registration. Since registration includes $1,000,000 liability insurance, coaches are urged to request financial assistance from their school. Please contact Gelaine Orvik if you have any questions. Home and cell phone num-bers as well as email address are found on page two of the Dakota Coach. The NDHSCA website is ndhsca.com. Plan now to attend! And register early! Forms are also available online.

The North Dakota High School Coaches Association has decided to provide a “Gelaine Orvik Scholar-ship.” The idea of this scholarship was brought to the NDHSCA Executive Board at the 2008 State Convention by Joe Howell. Gelaine Orvik is known as the Executive Secretary of the NDHSCA. He has also held this position on the National level. Gelaine has touched thousands of lives through his tireless effort and enthusiasm not only for we the coaches, but more importantly for student athletes. He is an outstanding role model, mentor, coach, teacher, person, and friend.

This scholarship will commemorate what Mr. Orvik has long stood for, helping students through scholarship. We would like to establish this fund so it will last a long time. In order to do this we are ask-ing for donations. Any donation, no matter how big or small will assist us in accomplishing this goal.

Please feel free to give this information to a past member of the NDHSCA, or someone else you feel would be willing to contribute towards this scholarship. Remember this donation is tax deductible.

Please make checks payable to NDHSCA Gelaine Orvik Scholarship Fund.

-From the Executive Secretary’s Desk

I just read an article from the Fargo Forum re-garding “youth-concussions in sports.

“The nations’ most sweeping measure ad-dressing youth-concussions in sports was signed into law Tuesday in Colorado, where the guidelines for protecting child athletes will require coaches to bench players as young as 11 when it’s believed they’ve suffered a head injury.”

“The new law also requires coaches in public and private schools and even volunteer Little League and Pop Warner football coaches to take free annual training online to recognize the symp-toms of a concussion. Most of the dozen other states with laws meant to protect young athletes only require concussion training for school-related athletic programs. The Colorado law goes into ef-fect in January.”

* * * * * * * NDHSCA has chosen to recognize T.J.

Herauf, Dickinson Coca Cola; Todd Wegenest, Minot Coca Cola; and Bill Dickerson, Williston Coca Cola with the Association’s Award of Merit. NDHSCA is very gracious for the recognition POWERade provides NDHSCA with the recogni-tion of a Senior Athlete of the Year in every sport that NDHSAA recognizes a state championship. Without the financial support from POWERade/Coca Cola, NDHSCA could not financially continue the recognition program.

Stu Merry, reporter for the McLean County In-dependent from Garrison, ND will also receive an Award of Merit for his reporting of detailed sports and supporting coaches and athletes for “small schools” in the West-Central North Dakota region. Mike Savaloja, Jamestown Sun sport reporter, is likewise a gem in reporting and supporting sports in the “small schools” in the South-Central North Da-kota region.

* * * * * * * At this date (April 15th) we are very close to

having a complete speaker roster for the conven-tion. We remind all members to check the NDHSCA Website for updates of speakers as well as the complete convention schedule as it is final-ized. As usual we think that the Tuesday sessions are going to be extraordinary with the concentrated presentations on Role-Modeling, concussions, drugs and steroids. We were disappointed when Bill Willliams, a superb football presenter, was un-

able to present. However, we have guaranteed his services for next year. If you are wondering who Bill Williams is, check out his website FCPGA.com. He is astounding. He makes a living presenting clinics and going to foot-ball camps to teach the correct techniques in blocking, tackling, and other football skills.

* * * * We have continued to expand the contents of the

Website and hope our members and interested peo-ple peruse is often. We will make a concerted effort to develop an up to date Coaches’ All-Time Victory Lad-der for most team sports. We receive many requests for information as to who is the coach with the most victories in a sport as well as who is the active coach with the most victories in a particular sport. We are going to contact our entire head coaching population in the following sports to begin developing the Ladder:

Baseball Basketball (boys) Basketball (girls) Football Golf (boys) Golf (girls) Soccer (boys) Soccer (girls) Softball Swimming & diving (boys) Swimming & diving (girls) Tennis (boys) Tennis (girls) Track & field (boys) Track & field (girls) Volleyball Wrestling

We are also going to assist each sport in devel-

oping an All Time State’s Best Performance” Record Board for those sports that have such records. Our concentration will begin with track & field, swimming & diving, golf and tennis.

If you have checked the website recently you will find that the North Dakota Coach of the Year History has been updated and been made more user-friendly. We have the COTY Recipients in two orders: by the year and by sport.

* * * * * * * We were tickled earlier in the month with the me-

dia coverage of some of our North Dakota Division I Athletes who are being successful. We confirm our

belief that we have the best ath-letes in the nation with a superlative work ethic.

Laura Roesler is at the Univer-sity of Oregon in Eugene and has already achieved All-American Status. She continues her sparkling performances, but now she is a member of a track and field team; and every team member has as-tounding ability.

Ellie Grooters is at University of Nebraska and found herself as a vital member of the Husker Track and Field Team but not as a hurdler during the indoor season. She ran the “long sprints---400 and 600” during the indoor season. In her second outdoor meet of the season she was scheduled to run the hur-dles at Eugene---in a reunion with Laura---after winning the intermedi-ate hurdles in her opening meet of the season.

Keep your eye on our state’s gems---very likely future Olympi-ans!

At the same time, a step back in history regarding our own North Dakota athletes! By chance due to communication glitch, Jay Bennett,

a 1950 Grand Forks Central Gradu-ate, contacted me regarding his induction into the North Dakota Track and Field Hall of Fame. By a recent letter he shared some of his experiences; he was “. . . surprised that the first trial jump would be good enough to win the district meet at Devils Lake and did so with a 19’7 ½” leap. This was a leap that took me over the following decade to the #1 ranking in the world in 1954 in winning the second of two NCAA Division I titles with a jump of 25’10-¾” while a student at Mar-quette [University].” With the previ-ous years second place leap at the Pan-American Games event at Mexico City of 26’ 3 7/8” (my all-time high), I did live up to my own expectations which I set quite high. I am still the record holder of the long jump at Marquette, both indoor and outdoor, after 59 years….first set in May of 1952. It pays to work hard toward a goal and that is proof positive.” What a great legacy I just learned about by a mistake in com-munication from Jay (our 1956 Mel-bourne Olympics Long Jump Silver Medalist) to me---when he thought he was contacting Al Knutson.

* * * * On April 5th our membership

was 1083 with seven new life time members paid for the year (1090 total for 2010-2011). We expect another 10 or 20 members for the year. We also expect that 2011-2012 memberships and 2011 convention registrations usually begin to arrive in May. Overall, NDHSCA has experienced a phe-nomenal year in memberships. We have also had an extraordinary in-volvement and interest shown by coaches in our overall program. We really are anxiously anticipating the celebration of our 50 year in 2011-2012. We are going to begin our

* * * * Dave Michaelson was in-

ducted into the North Dakota Wrestling Hall of Fame in Febru-ary. Dave was head coach and for the Dickinson High School for fourteen years guided the Midg-ets to a 124-68-3 dual meet re-cord. Dave’s teams were a top five finisher at the state wrestling tournament eight times with fif-teen individual state champions and 76 state place-winners. In 2007 Dave served as president of the NDHSCA where he provided outstanding leader-ship and demonstrated the true characteristics of a successful coach.

NDHSCA was richly blessed with Dave’s leadership.

There are numerous businesses and or-ganizations that have been approached, or will still be approached as we draw nearer to the conven-tion, that we will identify at a later date.

Gelaine is working on securing speakers for NDHSCA seminars while Jerome Garry (NHSACA Executive Director) is doing the same for NHSACA seminars. It’s through their efforts that convention registrants will be able to receive as many as 7 graduate credits or as few as 1 graduate credit. Randy Johnson (NDHSCA assistant to the execu-tive secretary) has been working on securing fi-nancing and special speakers for the convention.

It is our hope that North Dakota High School Coaches will assist with the 8 finalists for National Coach of the Year that will be attending the 2012 convention. It would include making contact with each finalist prior to the convention, assisting them in making their plans, meeting with them during the convention, and serving as a host(ess) in cooperation with the NHSACA National Sport Chair. It is a very exciting process that our North Dakota coaches would thoroughly enjoy.

The next update for our NHSACA/NDHSCA 2012 convention will be found in our Summer 2011 Dakota Coach.

NDHSCA Victory Milestones Please help the NDHSCA keep your records current. Each coach must send their record at the comple-tion of each season. If coaching more than one sport, complete each sport on a separate form. If you are completing the victory milestone for the first time, make sure to give your record for each year. Report only the highest level of coaching each season. Don't add coaching seasons together (ex. if a coach is coaching both jr. high boys basketball and varsity basketball, count only the varsity basketball record for that season). If coaching both varsity girls' and varsity boys' basketball, count each season

on separate forms and don't add together as one record. Under the new format for counting victories in certain sports such as track and field, cross country, tennis, golf, swimming, and gymnastics; the old records will need to be updated. Remember to keep each sport season separate and al-ways report the highest level of coaching in each sport. Mail completed form/s to: Gelaine Orvik; 3457 - 26th Avenue South; Fargo, ND 58103. Awards will be sent upon request after records are updated.

Procedure For Determining Won/Loss Records In An Invitational Meet: A. In an invitational meet, the teams that finish below you will count as victories, those that finish above you are losses. Any teams that you tie

will count as a win. B. Figure out the total number of teams you have competed against and what percentage of those teams were wins and losses. C. Take the percentage of wins/losses from above and multiply it against the number of meets you participated in to arrive at your won/loss re-

cord for the season. D. If this is not a whole number, victories will always be rounded down and losses will be rounded up. (Obviously, if your team has participated

in ten meets during the year, your wins plus losses should equal ten.)

Only meets in which three or more schools participate will count as an invitational.

Schools can still have a dual meet record that would remain the same along with a record for the invitationals they attend.

It will be up to the individual coaches to determine their records from past years

and update wins or revise their victory milestone forms.

NDHSCA MEMBER REGISTRATION -- REMAINDER OF FORM MUST BE COMPLETED
