Peer Support Training Today all of our Stage 3 students are participating in a Training Day in preparation for leading our Peer Support Program which commences later this term. The Peer Support Program involves Stage 3 students working with a small group of Kindergarten to Year 4 students. More information about the program will be included in future newsletters so keep an eye out for this. Thank you to Ms Besson, Ms De Palo, Ms Moore and Mr Sheridan for coordinating the training. Semester 1 Reports Semester 1 student reports were distributed on the last Thursday of Term 2, sent home in sealed envelopes with students. If you have not received your child’s report, please contact the Administration Office. Should you have any questions regarding your child’s report, please contact their class teacher.

Uniforms Term 3 Students should continue to wear full winter uniform this term. This includes black school shoes and, where hair accessories are worn, they should be of our school colours. This term students will wear sports uniform on two days of the week - the day of their Gymnastics session and on a Friday as per usual for sport. The Gymnastics program commences next week. KR, KT, KP, 1K, 1V, 2I and 2S should wear sports uniform on Mondays and Fridays. 2F, 3G, 3W, 4M, 4L and 5S should wear sports uniform on Tuesdays and Fridays. 4/5B, 6D and 6M should wear sports uniform on Thursdays and Fridays. Opportunity Class test The test for Year 4 students who have applied for admission to a Year 5 Opportunity Class in 2020 will be held next Wednesday 31 July. All parents who have applied for their child to sit this test should have received an email from the High Performing Students Unit regarding the Test Centre their child needs to attend and relevant details and arrangements. As per the information you have received, please ensure your child arrives promptly at the Test Centre. Students are required to wear full school uniform and should return to school at the conclusion of the test. If you have not received your email detailing the advice as yet, please contact me this week. Meeting with staff The Normanhurst PS staff members are more than happy to meet with you to answer any enquiry you may have regarding your child. We value highly working in partnership with parents to achieve the best outcomes for students. Please make an appointment time if you need to meet with a staff member, as we have many commitments to meetings, duties and extra-curricular activities before and after class time. Appointments can be made by phoning the school office on 9489 1152; emailing the school at [email protected] marked attention to the relevant staff member; or sending a note with your child. Enquiries related to your child’s learning or wellbeing should be directed to the class teacher or relevant RFF or support teacher in the first instance. If your enquiry is broader or you feel it has not been addressed to your satisfaction, you are then able to direct it to the appropriate Assistant Principal. If you wish to discuss a matter of a sensitive nature you may also wish to make an appointment with me. Education Week Open Day Please be reminded that we will be holding our annual Open Morning for Education Week on Wednesday 7 August, including open classrooms and our Book Parade. Please see the full program included in this newsletter. Positive Behaviour for Learning During this fortnight all classes are revising expectations for our playground and how our three school values relate to our playground setting. Kind regards, Amber Gorrell Principal

________________________________________________________________________________________ Calendar for Cultural Diversity 2020

Normanhurst Public School is again offering our students the opportunity to enter artwork for possible selection for the 2020 NSW Department of Education’s Calendar for Cultural Diversity. Over the past few years we have had some very talented students enter artworks and we have twice had our student’s artwork chosen.

The calendar for cultural diversity promotes intercultural understanding, cultural and linguistic diversity, community harmony and social inclusion across NSW public schools and their communities.

Each year, the calendar promotes a different theme relating to cultural diversity in the Australian context. The Theme of the 2020 Calendar for Cultural Diversity is ‘Our Place’.

We invite students to submit artwork for possible inclusion. Please submit your artwork to Ms Brisot before Thursday 1 August 2019. Please ensure you follow the instructions below. Artwork specifications: Artwork should:

• reflect the theme • be A3 or A2 size for reproduction purposes • be the work of a single student or a group of students

Your artwork must have the following written in pencil on the back: • name of student(s) and school year • name of parent and email address and phone contact • title of artwork • name of school and name of teacher contact • description relating to the work on the theme ‘Our Place’ (approximately 25 – 50 words).

________________________________________________________________________________________Normanhurst Spelling Bee - Thursday 1 August

Next week is our school Spelling Bee competition. It will be held in the hall between recess and lunch. Parents and carers are welcome to attend.

We will start with the junior category, Years 3 and 4 and then move to the senior category, Years 5 and 6.

It is a verbal competition, so the words are spelled out loud as opposed to a written test.

________________________________________________________________________________________ Hillsbus Service Changes Commencing 29 July 2019

There will be service adjustments for Hillsbus public routes from Sunday 28 July 2019. Your school travel advice sheet is not affected by these changes.

The changes may still impact how students travel, we advise all students to check their services before travelling. For more details about the coming changes, please visit www.transportnsw.info ________________________________________________________________________________________ P&C News Working Bee Saturday 3 August 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Plant a Tree Day Tuesday 13 August 2019 I reflect on my time as President of our P&C committee this year. If I’m honest, being on P&C has been one of the most rewarding yet at times frustratingly difficult tasks I’ve ever been involved in. I’m lucky to have had the opportunity to work alongside a committee who generously give their personal time to coordinate projects that improve the school as we all understand that without these efforts, many of our extracurricular activities and services that we provide at Normanhurst would cease to exist. During these last 3 weeks as I’ve worked with Ian on the K - 1 playground, I realise that without more help and support from our community towards this project we are seriously challenged. We need your help at the upcoming working bee on Saturday 3 August to help us complete the playground. There are jobs for all levels, planting, weeding, mulching, keeping the kids entertained, setting up and running a BBQ for everyone who comes along. I’m incredibly proud of what we have achieved with determination and hard work to improve this space. There is still such a long way to go so please show your thanks by being involved. It’s not about individual recognition but the sense of achievement that working as a team brings to our environment. Let’s work together and make our school an even greater place.
