Dear Friends of the Norfolk Education Foundation

We have much to be proud of in Norfolk Public Schools and the Foundation’s mission focuses on“providing resources to support Norfolk Public Schools in becoming world-class”.

A year ago we set a spirit of “BELIEVE” and for all to “COMMIT” to the betterment of our childrenand our schools.

From the beginning The Foundation agreed to COMMIT itself to helping the schools achieve excel-lence on all levels. The School Board earlier this year adopted three Achievable Results (see below)which guide them in everything they do. When these ARs were shared with the Foundation we agreedto COMMIT our efforts towards helping to achieve those goals. The Foundation in particular hasagreed to COMMIT to AR #3 by financially supporting programs with a focus on mentoring

Achievable Result #1: Norfolk Public Schools will implement, annually monitor, and refine the com-prehensive plan for improving on-time graduation for all students.

Achievable Result #2: Norfolk Public Schools will implement, annually monitor, and refine a systemof support so that all schools are fully accredited as defined by the Virginia Department of Education.

Achievable Result #3: Norfolk Public Schools will improve the climate of support for the achieve-ment of all students through staff, family, and community engagement.

The Foundation is extremely proud of our efforts this past year and I hope you will COMMIT time toreading about them in the pages to follow and perhaps to helping in some way in the future. We’redeeply thankful for all you’ve done to support the progress of NPS students over the last year. Together,we can continue to ensure their success. Why do we do it..........because we

BELIEVE in our Children ...BELIEVE in our Teachers...BELIEVE in our Schools

We’re up for the challenge, but we can’t do it without you.

Bay View Elem. 3rd Grade ABC Books I had a student who dedicated his book to on his father, his hero, who iscurrently on deployment in the U.S. Navy. He said this book would be a way his dad to see everything he had learned in 3rd grade. He wasvery excited to send it to his father over seas.

Campostella Elem. Project E3 There was a 53% increase from last year in STEM activities using the EiE(Early Elementary Engineers) kits. Participants from Portsmouth Public Schools, Chesapeake,

VA Beach, North Carolina schools and private schools were involved in the STEM carnival which completed the five week E3 Project.

Fairlawn Elem. Pushing Our Way to The Top Teachers listed the following accomplishments from their student’s results of participating in the program: increased interest in reading(and reading for enjoyment), more self-accountability in side and outside the classroom, more positive out look on life and becoming well rounded students.

Maury High School The School Counselor and 9th grade student comment: Wow, this is awesome! If you had given You (DVD Project) me a sheet of paper with this information on it, I’ll be honest with you;

I would have thrown it away. But I’ll definitely watch this.

Northside Middle Meeting of the Minds Book Club As a school, the grant made an impact on the total referrals acted onat Northside.

Tyree Furman is a student who suffers from bouts of anger. The book club helped him; specifically with controlling his anger and being able to verbalize his feelings. This past school year, there were fewer incidents and he was more open about his feelings.

Norview Elem. Call Me a Reader The children involved in the grant increased literacy capacity in all areas, including recognition of sight words, reading comprehension, accuracy, and oral ready fluency. First grade. Developmental Reading Assessment results outscored kindergarten and second grade scores in the Benchmark categories on NPS’ eportfolio.

One student went from level 4 (beginning 1st grade) to level 16 (end of 1st grade). As she practiced she reported, “working with thematerials makes you smart so you get good grades. I could hear the book and remember the story.”

St. Helena Elem. The Power of Art— When our teacher was reviewing Ancient Egypt, regarding theMaking Connections flooding of the Nile River, a 2nd grade student said, “Oh, just like

the lady showed us when she rolled out the big cloth Nile River and showed us where it flooded!” NPS Arts Connect will pilot in 3 elementary schools in 2011-12. 5th grade program Building the Light was so inspiring to student, Umniyah Henderson that she took the lead in a group of student art makers at the NPS Fine Arts Festival. They represented their school and offered expertise as artists and scientists there.

Booker T. Washington Geometry: Putting Your The grant helped students tremendously. All special needsHigh School Hands on It students passed their Geometry SOL tests.

A student who hardly ever attended school due to personal issues had a history of struggling in math. The student made use of the manipulatives and hands-on instruction provided. This student passed the class and made a 434 on the SOL test and graduated from Booker T. Washington High School.
