In Gratitude

WELCOME from your KEY 3Dear Scouters,

As an integral part of the Scouting family, we would like to take this opportunity to update you on our membership standards. On May 23, 2013, following the most comprehensive listening exercise in Scouting’s history, the approximately 1,400 voting members of the Boy Scouts of America’s National Council approved a resolution (61.44%) to remove the restriction denying membership to youth on the basis of sexual orientation alone. Scouting is a youth program, and we want to help and influence as many youth as we can. This policy will allow all kids who sincerely want to be a part of Scouting the opportunity to learn and grow from our program.

This policy change is effective Jan. 1, 2014, allowing the Boy Scouts of America the transition time needed to communicate and implement this policy to its approximately 116,000 Scouting units. The BSA is not attempting to make any sort of political statement with this resolution. Scouting represents more than 2.6 million youth and one million adult members, across the nation, all with diverse beliefs and we have to be examples of what we teach our youth and work together. By focusing on the goals that unite us, we are able to accomplish incredible things for young people in the communities we serve.

As you know, America is divided on this issue, but it is important that we as leaders of our Council continue to be unified in our messaging. At the North-east Iowa Council we take great pride in creating an environment where youths, adults, and different chartered organizations can work together to achieve life-changing benefits to youth. Scouting will continue to focus on reaching and serving youth in order to help them grow into good, strong citizens. Again thank you for your dedicated service to the Northeast Iowa Council and the Boy Scouts of America. Let’s stand united together and continue to be relevant in the lives of our future leaders. Scouting has been for over 103 years, and will continue to be the greatest youth serving organization in America.

Sincerely,

Dave Wagner-Council PresidentRick Leute-Council CommissionerScott Seibert-Scout Executive/CEO

Memorial Tribute FundWords too often do not express the sentiment we feel at the death of a friend. No finer tribute can be paid than to encourage some boy to live the life of a Scout, and thus perpetuate the high principles you admire in your friend. A contribution to the Permanent Endowment Tribute Fund of the Northeast Iowa Council, Boy Scouts of America is the perfect tribute. Your gift is: - A gift that will live on forever for the future of Scouting - A tribute to the one whom you wish to honor - Promptly acknowledged with a tribute certificate - A convenient way of expressing your feelings - A tax deductible contribution and a private expression

Remembrance can have no finer expression than through a gift to the Boy Scout Permanent Endowment Tribute Fund. This Fund crosses all lines of religion & wealth, warming the hearts of all. The 2013 camp season is finally here! I am proud to work with such great volunteers who have been a tremendous help while working around the lake this year. We are very confident in the new programs we have devised as a replacement. In April we delivered on the promise of mountain biking trails, complete with a fleet of brand new Trek bikes! We also have a new group of Dubuque-area volunteers who are excited to see our trails maintained and developed over time.

We are also offering a top-notch welding program sponsored by Lincoln Electric. This Merit Badge program teaches practical skills and the importance of service. We have an older boy program that boasts field archery, search and rescue, service, and COPE. And finally a first year program that promises to teach and help Scouts retain skills essential for First Class in a brand new way! (And check out our awesome t-shirt design for this year!) So even though the lake is temporarily gone, we are confident this year will deliver to individual units on many different levels in a very big way!

The George Meany Award is Labor’s highest honor presented to an adult union member who has made a significant contribution to the youth of their community. The George Meany Award was introduced in 1974. Since then over 12,500 awards have been presented by Local and State Central Labor Councils throughout the United States. The award, a National recognition, approved by the A.F.L.-C.I-O. Executive Council, not only gives us an opportunity to recognize union members for their service to youth, but also makes the general public aware of the important role that union members play in their communities.

We are proud to announce the latest local recipient, Beau Bush. Beau is a wonderful volunteer for the Northeast Iowa Council. The following are just a few of his accomplishments: - Cub Scout Asst. Den Leader Pack 50-1 Year - 2010-Present: Cub Scout & Webelos Den Leader Pack 50 - 2011-12: Spirit Award Winner Cub Scouts (Den Leader of the Year Pack 50) - 2011-12: Spirit Award Winner Boy Scouts (Scout Leader of the Year Troop 11) - 2012: Camp C.S. Klaus Lord Baden Powell Award Winner (Best Troop Award for Summer Camp) (Troop Award) - Member of U.A.W. Local #94 - Shop Steward and an alternate on the Shop Committee

The Challenge:The Northeast Iowa Council is very excited to announce that we have a challenge grant for our lake dredging project at Camp C.S. Klaus! We have 100 days to raise $50,000 for Lake John Deere. If we succeed in this, the Duane Munter Foundation will donate a matching gift of $50,000!! This is the largest project the Council has ever taken on, and we need your financial support to help make it happen! Thank you to all of those who have already contributed. You are impacting the next several generations of Scouting at Camp Klaus. If you have not had a chance to contribute, we ask that you take action now so we do not leave $50,000 on the table. No donation is too small. We need everyone to reach into their pockets and “Dig Deere Deep.” We have until September to make this happen. Thank you for your consideration and support. Please use the pledge card on the next page to fill out your information and gift amount, and send to: NEIC - Dig Deere Deep - P.O. Box 732 - Dubuque, IA 52004

Dubuque District CamporeeI’m excited to say that many Scouts and troops chose to accept their mission and traveled to Camp C.S. Klaus the first weekend in May for the Annual Dubuque District Camporee. The Camporee was themed around Mission Impossible with all kinds of challenges for the Scouts. There were obstacle courses, games of logic, and activities like low COPE, rifle shooting, archery, and a ton of fun! Thank you to all the troops that chose to accept this mission. Many troops were on hand for the entire weekend, braving the wet setup on Friday evening, and enjoying the two gorgeous days that followed. Special thanks to Troop 7 and Troop 19 for hosting such a phenomenal event!

DUBUQUE DISTRICT UPDATE

Friends of Scouting UpdateThe Dubuque District has raised $46,243 for this year’s FOS Campaign. We have $3757 remaining to reach our district goal of $50,000. Special thanks to all the families and Scouters who have given to this wonderful program we call Scouting. Also I’d like to thank every presenter and volunteers on the FOS committee who have given it their all from the start of the campaign. Every dollar you contribute goes directly to benefit the program and helps keep Scouting alive and strong in our community. If you missed your units FOS presentation or have not contributed this year, please call or email Colin. We’d be happy to send a pledge card your way.

Scoutreach Day CampThirty-five boys and girls attended Scoutreach Day Camp at Comiskey Park on Saturday, May 11th for a day of fun and adventure. This is the 5th year for the event, which benefits youth living in the park’s surrounding neighborhoods. Youth participated in an obstacle course, soccer, frisbee, smore roasting, tug of war, and a session devoted to the American Flag. Youth participated in exercises learning how to properly fold and respect the flag. Special thanks to the Loras College interns who helped plan the event, and also Joan Steve. Joan was on hand to help volunteer as a member of both our Learning for Life Committee and the Noon Optimist Club of Dubuque.

DELLAYKEE DISTRICT UPDATE

District High Adventure CrewRock climbing, backpacking, and canoeing; do these things sound fun to you? If so, be proud you are a Scout in Dellaykee District. Starting this fall, the District will be offering a series of high adventure trips throughout our area’s wonderful natural setting. Participants must be over the age of 14….meaning it’s for registered Scouts AND your friends. Yes, we are encouraging non-Scouts (even girls!) to see how fun Scouting can be. For kids not ready to commit to a traditional troop, we’ll register them in a special District Venture Crew. We hope this program will recruit more boys into local troops, and give more youth the opportunity to experience the awesomeness that is Scouting! We will have activities like the High Ropes course at Klaus, backpacking the Yellow River State Forest, rock climbing at Backbone State Park, and paddling down the Turkey River! If you want to get involved as a participant or trip leader, please contact the Council Service Center for more information. The schedule of events will be coming soon!

Friends of Scouting Update The Friends of Scouting Campaign is an opportunity for Scouting families, volunteers, and community organizations to support the local Scouting program. All donations go to our local Scouts for events like Klondike Derbies/Polar Fun Day, Spring & Fall Camporees, District Pinewood Derbies, and especially help to lower the cost of all our camp sessions at Camp C.S. Klaus. Currently, we have raised 40% of our district goal of $26,000. If your unit has not had a presentation, please give the Council Service Center a call to schedule one. FOS helps to greatly lower the cost of the program for families. Please consider a pledge to help build the integrity of your community by supporting Scouting.

Exploring is always looking for new businesses to participate and begin a program. All it takes is four adult leaders to register to oversee the program for a handful of evenings. We set the meetings accourding to your schedule. Whether you work for a major cooperation or own a small business, you have knowledge to share. And there are plenty of students eager to learn. We are still currently looking for a couple new posts for summer, preferably a a business area that could take advantage of the lovely summer weather. Photography or conservation would be great! Contact Laura at the Scout Office if you are interested.

Students and post leader Dan Neebel pose at IBM for the final meeting of the Loras Computer Science Program.

OA Pancake Breakfast a Great Success Again This Year! For many years, the Timmeu Lodge Mother's Day Pancake Breakfast has been a tradition for Scouts, Scouters, and friends of Scouting. This year, the Mother's Day Pancake Breakfast was held on May 12, 2013, at Eagle Point Park in Dubuque. Although it was a brisk and breezy morning, many still made the trip to the park to enjoy our renowned Mickey Mouse pancakes with all the fixin's. The LEC would like to thank all who sup-ported us this year on Mother's Day.
