WELCOME from your Scout Executive

Dear Scouters,

This is one of my favorite times of the year, as soon we will be smelling the smoke of our summertime campfires. That’s right, the camping season is soon to be among us, and I could not be more ready to open Camp C.S. Klaus for yet another summer camp season.

Nick Wood, our Camp Director, and Marty Wessels, our Program Director have been working hard in the off season preparing an unparalleled program for our Scouts and Scouters to attend this summer. We will be adding a 9-hole frisbee golf course, paddle boards, and a new gaga pit as well as the traditional merit badge offerings and activities. Last but certainly not least, Lake John Deere will be bigger, deeper, and colder than ever. We will have a special Family Night during the first week of camp to celebrate our lake being back! Plan to join us on Thursday, June 19, 2014, at 4:30 PM at Camp C.S. Klaus for our Lake Rededication Ceremony. Plan to stay afterwards for a special barbeque to celebrate and thank all those involved.

I also want to congratulate our newest class of Silver Beavers that wererecognized at our Annual Scouter Appreciation Dinner on March 8, 2014, at Thunder Hills Country Club. My hats off to the leadership of Kevin Eipperle, Walter Moellering, and Jeff Zasada. I could not be more proud of all our Scouters that we recognized at this year’s award reception.

Finally, I want to recognize all of our staff and volunteers that had a role in our Scouting for Food Campaign that was held on March 22, 2014. This is a 24 year tradition for our Council, and it takes a large amount of coordination behind the scenes! Our Scouts and Scouters did a tremendous job with this year’s campaign, and I know that the communities we serve are in better shape because of your valiant efforts with this project.

Sincerely,

Scott SeibertScout Executive/CEO

Scouting for Food Beats 2014 Goal!Scouting for Food was a big success this year!Believe it or not, we are still receiving food donations and tallying totals down at the Dubuque Food Pantry! As of right now, our tally at the Dubuque Food Pantry stands at 3000 lbs more than last year! Scouts delivered four truck loads, and a partial fifth truck, down to the Food Pantry this year. (A whole truck load more than last year!)

Here are some totals from our other collection sites: -Dyersville Food Pantry collected 3200 lbs. -E. Dubuque Food Pantry collected 910 lbs. -Cascade collected 900 lbs. -Bellevue Breadbasket collected 2300 lbs.

We would like to thank our sponsors for 2014 Scouting for Food! The NEIC had wonderful support from many area businesses that allowed us to increase our advertising for this event and extend the call for action to more community members. Thank you to Tri-State Vein Center, Dubuque Bank & Trust, TH Media, Hy-Vee, Union Hoermann Press, Miller Electric Supply, and Radio Dubuque! And finally, thanks to all the committee members who set up all the behind-the-scenes logistics for this event!

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Jeff ZasadaJeff Zasada began his work with Scouting 2001 as the quartermaster for his troop. He held this position for seven years. He has served as Scoutmaster since 2009. In this role, youth and adult members have come to appreciate his meaningful Scoutmaster minutes. He takes the job of counseling Scouts on their Eagle Scout projects seriously, and monthly camp outs for his troop are a given. Jeff is Woodbadge trained, and can also be found assisting the Order of the Arrow. He is the safety advisor for Timmeu Lodge and a big helper with the Annual Mother’s Day Pancake Breakfast.

Jeff is also very involved with his church. He has been an active member for over 25 years, and currently serves as the board director that oversees church maintenance. The Executive Director of his church says “Jeff ’s character is one that every Scout would want to emulate.” Jeff has received the Finley Hospital Caring Hearts Award. He serves as a mentor to youth at the Multi-Cultural Family Center. He has also served as an assistant coach for both girls softball and boys baseball.

Kevin EipperleKevin Eipperle began his Scouting career in 1969 as a Cub Scout. As a youth he earned the Eagle Scout rank & the Vigil Honor recognition from the OA. As an adult, Kevin has served Pack 50 for over ten years. He served ten years as Den Leader, eight years as the Pack Committee Chair, and ten years as the Assistant Scoutmaster for the troop. He has served as an Exploring Post Advisor for five years, and serves as a merit badge counselor. Kevin also recently served as the 2013 National Jamboree Venture Crew Leader for the NEIC. Kevin hasserved on the NEIC Executive Board since the 1990s and was selected the Council President for 2014.

Kevin’s community involvement outside of Scouting includes:- Dubuque Lutheran School board member, 10 years- Foundation for Dubuque's Public Schools board member, 7 years- City of Dubuque Historic Preservation Commission, 7 years- University of Dubuque for Kids summer program, 3 years- St. Paul's Lutheran Church Group leader, 6 years- Table Mound School Business Partner, 11 years- And finally, several years as an assistant coach for youth soccer.

Arthur Walter MoelleringArthur Walter Moellering has been a volunteer with the NEIC for over three decades! Walter is a dedicated Scouter who is Woodbadge trained and has served as an Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster, and Cubmaster. He has also served on the Camp Klaus summer camp staff. Walter loves camping and the outdoors! He made the trip to the 1997 National Jamboree, plus 12 other treks to either Philmont or Boundary Waters. He is a past Dellaykee District Award of Merit recipient, and also holds the Vigil Honor distinction from Timmeu Lodge.

Walter has also been very involved in his church and community. He currently serves on the church council of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He has served as a high school youth advisor, teaches adult Bible class on Sundays, and has supervised three weekday Bible studies for the past seven years. He aided in a youth project to complete a 2-year curbside recycling program for his community. He assisted with a week-long Jimmy Carter Habitat for Humanity project in Winnipeg, Canada. Finally, Walter has served six years on his local preschool board, including three years as president.

For this month’s Volunteer Spotlight, there was no question of who’s service to recognize. At the Council Recognition Dinner on March 8th, three new Silver Beaver Awards were awarded. This is the highest honor a Council can bestow upon a volunteer in the BSA. The honor can only be awarded to volunteers that give service far above the normal expectations. Please help us to highlighting their service & achievements by congratulating our newest Silver Beaver Award recipients: Kevin Eipperle, Arthur Walter Moellering, and Jeff Zasada!

THANK YOU!

You do not have to be a registered

Boy Scout. www.exploringdubuque.org

Much in the Works for 2014 Exploring!Exploring is in heavy planning stages for 2014. We have got some big things coming up. Our final leg of the Career Fairs for all Dubuque and Western Dubuque School District 8th Graders will take place on March 28th. Eighteen speakers from around the community have been arranged for the Fair at Roosevelt Middle School. Fourteen speakers have been arranged for Clayton Ridge High School’s Career Day on April 3rd. Laura will also meet with all of the Dubuque secondary principals & the Dubuque Superintendant in April to help spread the word about Exploring within schools. We also had a great night working with students at the Multicultural Family Center on self-development skills, and have been invited back in April.

Explorers from the first Dubuque Fighting Saints Post are finishing up their program with free tickets to Friday’s game. FEH Architecture & East Dubuque Fire will launch spring programs. We are also working with NICC on the possibility of summer Exploring programs. We are getting very excited for the fall! Exploring has a program for your son or daughter, niece or nephew. Contact Laura at the Scout Service Center to learn more at (563) 556-4343 and stay tuned for more exciting updates in our 2014 schedule.

Special Events & MarketingBig things are happening in the marketing department! This past month the Council staff was trained and began implementing a new online event registration software. We hope to go live with it by summer. Once we are live, events on the calendar will have much more information, including a Google Map link of the location for directions. You will also be able to sign-up and pay any event fees online! If you are planning a District or Council-wide event, please contact Laura. She can help with flyers, a Facebook or Nor’Easter announcement, Council website article, or Council Calendar entry. There is a promotional request form now on the website or find Laura at your next district Roundtable.

We have also been working on website updates and an e-mail marketing provider. We are hoping to roll these out by fall. Laura is currently looking to build a Council Marketing Committee. Members of this committee would help to find more promotional opportunities within the community for Scouting, improve our website content with regular spotlight articles, and create more unity through better communication. Please contact Laura if you have expertise in these areas.

Thanks to my committees & helpers on Eagle Brunch, the Scouter Appreciation Dinner, and the promotions for Scouting for Food. All were great successes for the Council! Looking ahead, we have two great golf fundraisers in the summer. These help raise a significant amount of money for the Council. If you are interested in donating a raffle or auction item, contact Laura at the Scout Service Center.
