The History of Finnish Dream Group Forum

One of two main roots of our Forum began year 1980, when during a dream group seminar in Northern Sweden Montague Ullman had a dream about me. His dream made me an instant convert to dreams in a shocking, deeply touching way.

Because of the impact of this incident I began to hold dream groups for laymen and professionals in the somatic and psychiatric areas.

The latest, most organized dreamwork phase began year 2004 in the form of 50-hour/year dream seminars presented as post-graduate training (vidareutbildning) and supervising (handledning) for the psychiatric personnel in a Finnish psychiatric clinic with a catchment area of about 250.000 inhabitants.

Two Ladies in a Library

The other main root leading to our Forum began over ten years back. Two psychotherapists, without knowing anything about Ullman, searched for books about dreams, when one of them dropped accidentally and literally onto her own toes Ullman's book Working with Dreams, translated in Finnish by me. After picking it up from the floor she realized that the book was exactly what she had sought after.

They created their own dream group leader training, consisting about one hundred seminar & supervision hours. Most of Finnish dream group leaders have qualified through this training.

These two roots merged Jan 24, 2003 by the creation of our Forum, which has functioned as discussion arena between dream group leaders and as information forum, especially through Internet.

Forum's first two-day dream group seminar was held Oct 14-15, 2005.

"For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world,

and lose his own soul?"

"The Dream Group Forum in Finland" is not registered anywhere.

We, the founding core group, have not seen it necessary to have any individual organizational role names, but call ourselves as "planning group".

We have no officials, no members, no fees, no Board (just the planning group). The Forum is like a dream: so very real like a dream, residing in an ethereal vortex among the electrons of information space. -- The creator of this vision is sitting here with us today.

By thus protecting itself from losing the original spirit, the Forum hopefully is able to avoid petrifying into a spirit-suffocating prestige-hungry organization.

Dreamwork & Society

How to integrate dreamwork into the structure of surrounding society?

…By letting dreamwork fill softly its own natural niche in our dream deprived society.

Not heavily, aggressively like a caterpillar, but lightly like a butterfly, so fragile in its innocence, but so deeply touching in its beauty.

For me, this arrangement is a charming, fascinating way to exist, so light and so real like Genesis in Bible says; like the Spirit of God moving upon the face of the waters!

The Dream Network Inside

Bill Stimson, founder of the Dream Network Journal :

"Some decades ago I burned myself out and almost destroyed my life trying to network dreamwork. Now I realize the work with dreams cannot be networked either."

"The work with dreams can no more be institutionalized or professionalized than love can .....  It is an instant by instant changing network, a wild fire running through the heart, out of control."

"Dreamwork isn't about becoming some big important person who writes books and goes around giving workshops. Dreamwork is about becoming authentic, which means becoming smaller and smaller until we begin to glow with an authenticity that seeps [flows] out to all those around us, infusing their lives with greatness, importance and magic."

"...When the religions became institutionalized they became spiritually stifling.  .... Our institutions, in a very deep sense, are no more good... ...except to the extent there can arise from amongst us individuals, [who are] capable of reinventing them in such a way as to make them meaningful once again to the full spectrum of the human heart."

The Team-work of Craft and Talent

There is a factor, which sets practical limits to our mission to bring understanding of dreams to anyone's (but not everyone's!) reach.

Ullman writes:

"[teaching dream work experientially] is an art, separate and distinct from any theoretical formulations. .... Art involves the connection of talent and craft [yrkesskicklighet]. Only craft can be taught. Talent is innate [inborn ability]."

No dreamwork organization can declare copyright over art, much less art of dreams. The spirit of dreams cannot be commanded to appear, but without craft it hardly ever happens. The craft is needed to establish the conditions for spirit to appear.

Without dreamwork organizations people interested in dreams have only minimal possibilities to share their dreams in a safe and inspiring environment.

Let our upcoming Nordic Network be a network at all levels in craft and in talent. Let it be a wildfire running through our hearts!

represents in a sense an infinite information source.

The manifest order represents the way things are, free of perceptual and conceptual limitations and distortions.

The perceptual order; our consensus reality represents our limited grasp of the manifest field and, in turn, our indirect tie to the implicate order.

"Dreaming may be a way of monitoring our distance from the manifest order, from the reality behind the way we look at ourselves, at others and at the social order in which we live our lives."

Without this need to go beyond the day consciousness, beyond the rational world, the dream groups are doomed to stay only as ordinary psychological groups.

The expli-cate order

The implicate order

Ullman has always tried to understand the bigger whole. Besides biological, psychological and social dimensions he includes the cosmic dimension. The most usual conceptional framework he is using in this area is quantum physicist David Bohm's concepts of implicate, explicate, manifest and perceptual order:

An infinite information source, unbroken wholeness as a flowing stream with its waves: eternally arising and vanishing forms of the universe; "holomovement", having the whole in every detail like a hologram.

The manifest order represents the way things are, free of perceptual and conceptual limitations and distortions.

The perceptual order; our consensus reality; the way we see things are represents our limited grasp of the manifest field and, in turn, our indirect tie to the implicate order.

The prerequisite for enlivening the dreams is beyond dreams

Without individuals with the need to go beyond the limits of day consciousness (which

Ullman has had since his youth), the dream groups stay only as ordinary psychological

groups.

The Transformation Process In Dreams by Montague Ullman

 Vol. 79, No. 2  May 1975

The American Academy of Psychoanalysis

Paper delivered at a Conference of Scientists with J. Krishnamurti at Brockwood Park, October 14, 1974.

Black hole of the psyche contains extremely condensed invisible, implicate information mass

...which expands; becomes explicate, visible dream images, but their information is still mostly implicate, thereby mostly uncomprehensible for our day consciousness

...we must still make them visible; to transform this private experience into public mode; explicate to ourselves and others with the help of language, but language alone is not enough because a lot of information they contain is easier to feel than to explain"That black hole contains our personal

expanding universe and we do both ourselves and the universe an injustice when we try to reduce it to a play of instincts."
