    by Len Napolitano

The reasons are many from differences in the climates of thevarious grape-growing regions, to the type of soil under the vines, to

the choices made in the method of production.

Starting with climatic differences, grapes grown in cooler climates

retain a higher level of acidity than the same grape grown in a warm

climate. Higher acidity will produce a crisper, more refreshing

texture in the wine. On the other hand, grapes grown in warmer

climate will have less acidity, greater ripeness, and thus a higher

alcohol content when fermented, and produce a wine with a fuller,

    rounder body.

Chardonnay grown in each of these two disparate environments

produces two very different wine styles. This difference in crispness

verses fullness is sometimes referred to as a difference in mouth-

feel. The addition of oak in the fermentation or aging process also

contributes to mouthfeel in the wine compared to one that gets little

    or no contact with oak.

Soils vary greatly around the world and even throughout Cali-

fornias many wine regions. Soils might be composed of chalk, lime-

stone, clay, sand, gravel, loam or other components that may impaa unique flavor to the wine. For example, some people claim that

grapes grown in the Rutherford area of Napa produce wines with

identifiable Rutherford dust character, described usually as a her

    ceous spiciness.

In addition to the above reasons, other factors, such as whethe

wine is filtered or blended with another grape, will create a

producers overall style and character and thus differentiate it from

other producers wines made from the same grape.

Finally, some wine regions command higher prices for their

grapes than others. Its simply a matter of supply and demand.

Winemakers who buy grapes will pay a pretty penny for Caberne

Sauvignon from Napa Valley, for example, where world class wine

have made Napas reputation as a source of outstanding grapes.

Len Napolitano lives in San Luis Obispo County and is certified in wine by the Society of Wine Educators,Wine & Spirits Education Trust and Chicago Wine School and continually gains knowledge from his frequent con

with California winemakers. More information is on his website, www.wineology.com.Send your questions about wine to: [email protected] or by mail to Len Napolitano in care of

Wine Country This Week magazine. Wineology is a registered trademark of Len Napolitano.

Why do wines made from the same grape taste different among producers?

The Skinny The Wine Garage is all about the juice. Its also about having funlike a kid in a candy store. The Wine Garage is, literally, a former gas station.

Todd, the wine buyer, travels far and wide to find top-shelf, affordably priced

wines. Inside, youll find more than 200 different labels neatly arranged in ca

on the floor and an engaging staff who are friendly, attentive and most impor

    tantly, they know their wines.

Buzz Despite its funky space, the Wine Garage is a wine lovers best friend.Reminiscent of visiting your favorite record store (yes, kids, once upon a tim

thats where you had to buy your music), the fun is going through all the cas

and finding something youve never heard of. All the wines have been test

driven by the staff, so, whatever you select, you wont be disappointed.

Value Ultimately, the Wine Garage is about value. Its no secret that in NapaValley, its difficult to score a highly rated red for less than $65, but the Wine

Garage manages to do it all the time. The staff takes great pride hunting dow

unusual and lesser-known, limited-production wines and passing their haggl

    finesse on to us.

Ten-second summary With the exception of Wine Garage labeled-awardwinning Cabernets, nothing in this hip hideaway is more than $25! The Wi

Garage is stocked with premium, small-lot wines that you wont find at BevM

Trader Joes or your local wine store (plus, they do a better job storing their

    wines at the correct temperature).

Best bets In addition to all the labels the Wine Garage represents, they alsoproduce their own lip-smacking blends. My in-house favorites are: 2009 JoyRide (white blend), 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet, 2007 Napa Valley Petite

Syrah, 2008 Napa Valley Chihuahua Cabernet and 2006 Napa Valley Hside Cabernet.

Under-the-radar Go old-school with half-gallon jugs filled while you wait

using their specifically designed service station nozzles. Not only are the windelicious (and affordable), the jug is crazy fun conversation at the table. Its a

    a cool gift.

Secrets For the next few weeks, receive an additional ten percent off thealready low prices when you purchase six bottles. Twenty percent on a case.

Better yet, the Wine Garage has the BEST wine club in the valley and they

    ship just about everywhere.

Insider If youre a serious wino, get on the inside track for ultra exclusivedeals by hooking up with the Wine Garage on Twitter and Facebook (wine c

members get first crack to cream-of-the-crop finds).

WINE COUNTRY NEWS | WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

    18

A first encounter with the Candlelight Inn is a bit like love at first sight! As you approach the

beautifully maintained and landscaped Tudor Mansion built as a residence in 1929 it appears to

straddle Easum Drive, a modest residential area. The street not far from Napas Town Center

ends as you park in the welcoming front courtyard. Right here, in the bustling epicenter of every-thing that makes the wine country so desirable, the luxurious ten-room inn sits on its own private,one-acre, secluded park. It is bordered by Napa Creek and nestled beneath towering redwoods.

Here, a spacious pool/cabana is surrounded by meticulously landscaped flowering shrubs, bushes

and rock gardens. Noticeable sounds are birds and rustling leaves.Originally designed for an active familys enjoyment, Candlelight Inn is now a private retreat for

discriminating visitors to the wine country. Many guests, who were smitten by that first impression,

now return year after year to relax and renew their enjoyment of all the region offers. On each visit, there is more to do. In recent years, Napa has become a hub for world-

renowned chefs, and each year brings more restaurant openings. At theinn, guests can enjoy complimentary wine and hors doeuvres as well as

snacks and drinks at all hours. A three-course breakfast featuring local

and seasonal foods is served each morning. Most rooms have a deck orbalcony, a two-person marble Jacuzzi tub and a fireplace. All have air

conditioning, TV, telephone and wireless internet access. Each is unique

and tastefully designed. An on-site concierge provides personalizeddining and wine country touring recommendations. The concierge also

helps guide you to the numerous attractions of wine country hikingand bicycling, kayaking, bird watching, cultural attractions, balloon

    WINE COUNTRY THIS WEEK

by Charles NeaveThere is little question that, on many levels, wine is a form of food,

and that wine and food pairings are a perfect way to bring out the best

in both, whether it is wine and artisan cheese, wine and chocolate

(Cabernet and Zinfandel are perfect matches with chocolate) and

more. But to my knowledge, in the southern part of Napa is the only

winery that pairs their roster of fine wines with honey.

The honey they use is collected from hives on their own land and

then stored in barrels before it is put up in jars and delivered to the

tasting room. The flavor and color of the honey depends on the flower

that the nectar came from. As they explain, these different flavors, or

flavor profiles complement different wines:Wildflower honey is a wonderful match for our 2009 Estate Pinot

Noir and 2009 Estate Viognier. Honey that comes from blackberry is

a favorite with the 2007 Zinfandel. The assertive flavor of eucalyptus

stands up to our 2006 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and that

which has the star thistle (Centaurea solstitialis, to be precise), compo-

nent is fascinating with the very popular 2010 Aurelius California

    White Wine Blend.

The honey is 100% pure and raw (never heated above 100

degrees) so it will not have changed from the time the bees placed it

in the hive to when you have the opportunity to enjoy a spoonful.

This ambitious but rewarding venture has also shown us

importance of being conscious of our impact on our local environm

and how our decisions and initiatives can influence others as w

said Emily Byer, the winerys marketing director. So in maintain

our commitment to what is best for the bee, our farm and ho

harvesting is also powered by solar energy.

When you visit the winery youll see proof of that and much, m

more. Reata has some of the most beautiful views in the North

California Wine Country, said Alyssa OHare, co-founder and pr

dent. I was raised on a working ranch in Oregon, and this estat

magical for me. From our veranda you can see the whole panora

from the Napa Valley to San Pablo Bay, the unique climate of whic

so important here.In addition to the bees, honey and wine, the winery is undoubt

stunning. A combination of Old West master carpentry using h

timbers to start with, splendid rock work both inside and out,

plantings and water features everywhere you look outdoors. I

surrounded by acres of vineyards with pasture land above, a fit

tribute to its storied history as a working ranch.

In the tasting room, with its high ceilings, even more polis

wood, a fireplace, furniture made out of hides, a huge chandelier m

from discarded antlers and with doors that open out to that spaci

veranda, it is certainly a one-of-a-kind destination. And, whe

BENNETT LANE WINERYVenture Off the Beaten Path

for a Taste of Calistoga CabernetCabernet Lovers will Race to Bennett Lanefor a Sneak Peek of the 2009 Vintage, February 4th

The first weekend in February is all about Cabernet in the val

as wineries up and down Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail

release their luscious Napa Cabernets. One of our favorite stops

every year is Bennett Lane Winery in Calistoga, known for its

succulent Cabernets, their signature feasting wine, Maximus, a

for one of the finest visitor experiences in the valley.

Founded by Randy and Lisa Lynch in 2003, Bennett Lanes o

the-beaten-track location and friendly tasting room offers visitors

Napa a secret gem and a great way to learn about and try some of Napas best wines in a more intimate setting. On Saturda

February 4th, Bennett Lanes 2009 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvign

($55) and 2009 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($95) will be releas

and poured for visitors at the tasting room a special opportuni

to get a sneak peek and taste the wines before they are released t

the public later this year. The cost for the release event is $25 pe

person and includes a flight of new releases and select award-

    winning library releases.

Bennett Lanes Cabs have continuously garnered critical acclai

In the short period that the winery has been opened, they have

received an incredible 28 scores of 90+ points between Wine Spe

year, the 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve scored 9

points from Parker, 91 points from Wine Spectator, and 90 poin

from Wine Enthusiast. Year after year, the popular blend of

Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah has received 90 points or above from

the critics. The red feasting wine, as Maximus is affectionately

referred to on the label, demonstrates owners Randy and Lisa

Lynchs commitment to making wine an integral part of entertain

    with family and friends.

Bennett Lanes wines are crafted to be approachable, yet

BY SUe StrAight, the Wine Wench

How does a guy who studied anthropology, film and photography

end up as winemaker in one of Sonoma Countys premier wineries? Ask

Bill Batchelor, Martin Ray Winerys Winemaker and hell tell you and

its an inspiring tale, at that.

Bill was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area and attended school at

Sonoma State University. He started out studying anthropology and art.

He really got into film and writing scripts some of his scripts were

even used for TV miniseries! He couldve easily moved to Los Angeles to

foster his career in film, but Sonoma County was where his heart was

and he chose to stay. Around this time, some of Bills friends wereworking for wineries and they urged him to consider a career change,

so in 1996 he switched gears and went to work at Preston Vineyards in

Dry Creek Valley. It was a seasonal, entry-level position, but thats where

the winemaking bug first bit Bill. He told me My first job at Preston

Vineyards was soaking barrels. Each barrel took a few minutes to fill, so

I read every wine publication I could get my hands on as the barrels

were filling. I also asked lots of questions!

After his stint at Preston Vineyards, Bill went to work at Ace Cider as

Cidermaster, where he got a crash course in fermentation. Ciders

ferment quickly and dont need any barrel aging, so he got to oversee

each batch and learn how to deal with all the quirky things that can

happen during fermentation it was quite a learning experience!

In 2001, Bill went to work as Production Manager for Blackstone

Winery in Kenwood and in 2003 he went to work at Martin Ray Winery

He became Senior Winemaker at Martin Ray in 2009.

Local winemaking legend Kerry Damskey is Bills mentor and the

Consulting Winemaker at Martin Ray Winery. Last year, Megan Hill was

    hired as Assistant Winemaker.

Bill is an interesting guy. Hes raising two daughters (ages eight and

ten), makes beer and cheese at home, and to really relax, tends his

Bonsai trees. Bill is also an avid fan of music. If you were to walk into

the cellar or the lab, chances are youd hear everything from classic

country western to punk and hard rock blasting from the speakersattached to his iPod.

When asked what his favorite thing about his job as winemaker at

Martin Ray Winery, Bill told me I love the variety and unique challenge

that each vintage brings. It is always different and I (and the rest of my

winemaking team) have to think on our feet, be flexible and use a good

    mix of intuition and practicality.

When he has the time, Bill loves meeting tasting room visitors and

giving tours of the winery. Take my advice go by Martin Ray Winery,

The Family Wineries and Growers of The CoombsvilleVintners & Growers Celebrate Napas Newest Appellation

The Coombsville Vintners & Growers have announced the approvaland designation of Napa Valleys newest sub-appellation, the Coomb-

sville Appellation. The official Coombsville Appellation designationwas made official by the United States Department of the Treasury TTB

on December 14, 2011, and makes Coombsville the Napa Valleys 16th

AVA, or American Viticultural Area. The Coombsville Appellation consists of approximately 11,000

acres and is bound by the Napa River to the west, to the rim of VacaRange on the east, with altitudes ranging from near sea level at the

western edge of the City of Napa, to approximately 1900 feet at Mt.

George in the north. The horseshoe-shaped west-facing ridge of theVaca Range partially encircles the Coombsville area, helping define the

north, east and southern boundaries of this newest viticultural area.

Coombsville AVA is a sub-appellation of the larger Napa Valley AVA

and the multi-county North Coast AVA.Coombsville Vintner Tom Farella of Farella Vineyard, who co-authored the AVA petition with fellow vintner Brad Kitson, said, Its a

great day for all of us that have been growing grapes in Coombsville for

decades. Coombsville now has its proper place in the Napa Valleylexicon and on the appellation maps. Since the Coombsville name has

been in use for so many years, having it placed among the great wine

regions of the world feels a little like coming home. The Coombsville Appellation is an incredibly distinct area that

differs from nearby AVAs in soils, geography and climate. The soils areprimarily dominated by the volcanic rhyolitic tuff that comprises the

Vaca Range on the eastern side of the Napa Valley.

I think when people see it on the map they will wonder why it

wasnt there all along because of how it fits into the puzzle pieces of theNapa Valley as a whole. It may have taken awhile to happen, but now

its locked in and we are very proud of that, Farella added. Most of Coombsvilles vine-

yards are located in the wide allu-vial deposits created by the

    wearing down of the hillsides.

These soils are abundant withrock and gravel and, in some

areas, are also layered withvolcanic ash deposits from Mount

    George. Separately and in various

combinations, these two compo-nents provide a variety of planting

    options specific to each site.

In addition, the close prox-imity to the San Francisco Bay

contributes to the temperateclimate of Coombsville. The

cooling effects of marine fog occur

earlier and last longer than in themore northern regions and

    temperatures are less extreme

during the winter frost season. Bud break is often sooner and harveusually later, leading to a longer growing season. These differen

impart unique characteristics in the wines that are produced in

    region.

Coombsville wines can be recognized by their soft, but significtannins, which provide excellent structure and mouthfeel, along w

underlying layers of earth and mineral flavors. They are quite oapproachable yet sophisticated, complex and layered. Primary varie

include Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals, SyChardonnay and Pinot Noir.

We are excited to showcase the amazing vineyards in Coombsv

and the distinct and beautiful wines that are being made in the 1AVA of Napa Valley, stated Rebecca Sciandri Griffin, Sciandri Fam

Vineyards, President of Coombsville Vintners and Growers.

The Newly Recognized, but Long Established Coombsville Vners & Growers welcome visitors

to one of the Napa Valleys historicand most relaxed regions. Coomb-

    sville Appellation wineries are

primarily family-owned and oper-ated, producing limited quantities

of super-premium quality wines. The Coombsville Appellation is a

    mere one-hour drive from San

Francisco, and only minutes fromMichelin-starred restaurants and

luxury hotels, spas and B&Bs in

the city of Napa. For more information on the

Coombsville Appellation, and theCoombsville Vintners & Growers,

Bunnie, Judd and Holly Finkelstein represent two genera-

tions of Napa vintners, and their philosophy is one that

focuses on an intimate and personal approach, which is why

they have limited their annual production to less than three

thousand cases total a literal drop in the bucket of Napa

Valley wine. Equally, their southern Silverado Trail-based

winery, completed in 2006, was one of the first Napa Valley

Vintners certified Green Wineries because of the incorpora-

tion of environmentally-efficient drainage, solar lightning, and

an uncompromising recycling and composting program. Add

in that Judds Hill is known for throwing great parties like the

Lobster Luau Winefest, Musical Bonanza and Hanukkah

Hootenanny and youve got the recipe for success for sure. The proof is in the glass, of course, and thats where the

Finklesteins, first Art and now Judd, have been winning rave

reviews for forty years. As Judd says, Our idea is that great

fruit makes fine wine, and we want that fact to show through.

To that end, we use oak subtly, keep the alcohols at moderate

levels, and blend carefully. We let the grape shine. How good

is this philosophy? Well, the winery is well-known for

amazing small-lot releases multiple Cabernet Sauvignons,

Founders Art Reserve Cabernet, Magic red wine blend,

Merlot, Petite Sirah, Pinot Noir, Ros, Sauvignon Blanc and

Zinfandel which means youre all set for a party.

Makai Gents Featuring the Mysterious Miss Mauna Loa.

Saturday, February 11th from 12 to 3 p.m. marks the first

opportunity for folks to party with Judd and the gang in 20

and its one not to be missed! What better way to get ready

for fun than spending time at the winery in Napa most know

Kick-start your Valentines Day weekend festivities with

delicious Judds Hill wines and light bites, all served with a

healthy portion of Judd Love! As always, they will have liv
