    Find your ideal tour

  • If you dream of having an authentic African adventure, a Nomad tour is one of the best ways to achieve it. We organise and plan everything for you, leaving you free to relax and really enjoy your African experience.

    Dear Fellow Travellers

Welcome to our Nomad 2015 brochure. I hope you find it as exciting as we do!

Thank you for taking the time to explore some of the many travel options available with Nomad or just to catch up with us.

Africa continues to draw travellers of all ages and nationalities due to its unique combination of attractions. Unrivalled cultural interactions, heart-stopping adventure, majestic scenic beauty and of course, the most incredible wildlife on the planet.

In this we are extremely fortunate as tourism is now a major force driving the upliftment of the whole continent. These variables are what inspire us at Nomad and have kept our passion for Africa alive, these last 17 years.

2014 has proven to be Nomads finest year to date. We have smashed all records imaginable. Our fleet grew. Our departures grew. Out staff grew and fortunately so did our family of happy customers. We ran more tours, carried more people and did it better than ever. Nomad is continuing to move onwards and upwards and, to all of you who have had a role in that, you have our deepest thanks.

All that growing has enabled us to reinvest massively into Nomad. I am happy to report that in 2015 we will be operating with the best possible resources available to ensure we continue to set new benchmarks in Adventure travel in Africa.

The quality of our guides, vehicles and equipment, as well as the accommodation and activities on our tours has risen to levels that are totally unmatched and will ensure that anyone travelling with Nomad in 2015 will have a life changing adventure and come to discover why people who visit Africa, usually come back.

See you on the road!Alex RutherfordFounder and Managing Director of Nomad Adventure Tours

TOURS AND SAFARISCamping or Accommodated Whats the difference? Our accommodated tours are here to ll the gap between a camping experience and an expensive lodge-tour while our camping tours allow you to have a truly African experience. On all of our tours (excluding the Cape Town to Victoria Falls and sections) we have both camping and accommodated guests travelling together. All meals are prepared at the truck, you have the same guides and the travel times are all the same so that literally is the only decision that you have to make a bed or a tent.

Camping gives you the freedom to build your own home every evening. We provide you with heavy duty canvas dome tents which are standing height (unless youre over 6 foot) and approximately 2.5 x 2.5m across the base. On a camping tour, you need to provide your own pillow, sleeping bag and towel. The tents are easy to put up and have exible self-supporting poles and there are no unnecessary pegs to ght with. There is a y-sheet provided for rainy weather and a built-in mosquito net. We also provide everyone with a sleeping mattress.

On Accommodated tours, you can expect 2 4 star twin / double accommodation and the majority of it is en-suite. In some places, we also make use of permanent safari tents which are considered accommodation.

The truck will remain in the area where the campers are. On camping tours, single supplements are optional however on accommodated tours, single supplements are compulsory if you are travelling on your own.

Small Group ToursNomad is proud to be the only adventure tour operator to offer a business class option to our already well established and trusted variety of camping and accommodated tours. Imagine the feeling you get when you nd that on your long haul ight, the seat next to you is empty and you get two seats to yourself and a window view now imagine guaranteeing that on your multiple day adventure tour! Our small group tours have a maximum of 12 guests on board our 24 seater truck which means that there is more personalised attention, more space to move around the truck, two lockers, two seats and a window for everyone!

Tailormade and Independent TravellerOur specialised Tailormade department can pretty much cater to any requirement you may have and can assist you to put together the dream holiday of a lifetime, whatever your budget. Our extensive experience ensures we have access to a variety of options.

Day ToursNomad also offers a carefully selected list of Day Tours in and around the major cities of Africa.

Group or Charter ToursOur experience and expertise throughout Africa allows Nomad to be able to create unique group tours for any number of travellers. We regularly do this for both private individuals and companies. For these tours we offer a range of transport options from our standard Adventure Trucks, to minivans, 4x4s and even trains and planes. From 2 star to 5, we do it all. Contact us to nd out how surprisingly affordable a private tour can be.

Dive ToursNomad Adventure Tours and Lutwala Dive have combined efforts to create a selection of Southern African dive tours. This provides diving focused travellers with sensational diving tours whilst still taking in the land based highlights that Africa has to offer. Lutwala Dive brings PADI 5* IDC diving professionalism and extensive diving experience and training. This partnership results in both companies focusing on their strengths and providing guests with a truly once in a lifetime African dive safari.

With all our tours you are looked after from the moment of departure to the moment the tour ends. Accommodation, travel, meals and diving organisation are taken care of, leaving you to simply relax and get the most from your African experience. With a wide selection of optional activities, non diving family members or partners can be kept entertained and divers have opportunities to immerse themselves in land based action as well as that under the water.

With several tour options available ranging from a handful of days through to epic adventures, Nomad and Lutwala are sure you will nd a tour that suits you. We are happy to tailor tours to suit speci c needs or wants and will happily create a tour that meets your desired level of accommodation, travel and involvement.

OTHER SERVICESPre and Post Tour AccommodationWhen starting or ending your tour, we always advise that you arrive the day before your tour is set to depart and leave the day after your tour ends. We can recommend and book a number of hotels for you. These properties are usually very close to our departure/end points and will make planning your trip a lot easier.

Airport TransfersWe will also organise your airport transfers for you if youd like us to get you to or from your hotel, before or after your tour.

WHO SHOULD, AND DOES, GO ON AN ADVENTURE TOUR?In the past, groups tended to be very young as the majority of travellers to Africa were backpackers. As Africa has become a progressively more mainstream destination (Africa today is far more accessible than 15 years ago) our guests have also changed. 15 years ago the average age of our travellers was around 23-27 years old and now we have anyone from 8 80 years of age, travelling with us.

The average age of our campers is approximately 20 45 and our accommodated guests vary between 30 60 years of age. However, these indications are very general as each and every tour is different and campers and accommodated guests travel together. Part of experiencing the tour is about meeting new people and what we can con rm is that 99% of our travellers nd that they get along very well.

WHAT TO EXPECT?The days usually start early and end late, although a lot of time is spent travelling, we do cram a lot into every day. Expect some frustrations, you are in Africa and things dont work that well sometimes. Coming on tour with an open mind, exible attitude and realistic expectations will ensure you have a great time.

An average day on tour begins around 6am and departure is after breakfast at around 7am. There are some mornings that need a very early start to reach our next destination, or to photograph a spectacular African sunrise its all part of the adventure. Prepare yourself for the worst, especially in winter when days are shorter. We lose approximately 5 hours of daylight in winter so it may happen that youre setting up your tent in the dark or that some optional activities are not available then.

We usually take a lunch-break en-route and depending on the distance to be covered, afternoons are often spent relaxing or exploring the lay of the land. Usually every few days, we will spend a couple of nights at one venue to break the travel routine. Distances between highlights are often on a bigger scale than those at home, particularly in East Africa. Often there is absolutely nothing between focal points except vast open deserts. Most tours average approximately 450 km per day however there can be stretches of up to 600km in a single day and thats a long way in a truck so be prepared. Our guides do all the cooking, however you are welcome to ask the guides if you are keen to share your culinary skills with the group. The more you get involved, the better the group experience and not doing your dishes is not a great way to make friends. Although we do most of the work, the nature of these tours is not that of a beach holiday. A little assistance from the group

can make a real difference as it means that the guides have more time for you and more time to make the tour amazing so getting involved de nitely enhances the tour experience. This is an adventure, not a holiday.

HOW TO DECIDE WHICH TOUROften people who are not experienced with Africa and/or Adventure tours nd the amount of information and choices confusing. To simplify matters we suggest the following :

Decide on whether you want to visit East or Southern Africa. Simply put, the South is ideal for rst time visitors to Africa as it is generally an easier journey with better infrastructure, while East Africa requires a more rough & ready attitude. Check our highlights pages to help make your decision. Then decide between camping or accommodated options and nally, the duration of your trip. One week, two weeks, three weeks or longer. Although Nomad offers over 100 different tours by following these steps your choices will be reduced to around 6 or 7 options.

WHATS INCLUDED, WHATS NOT, AND WHY?Lets face it, there is no such thing as an all-inclusive tour. There are always extra activities that you can do but at Nomad there are no hidden costs and you remain in control of your choices and nances.

Whats included?Transport in our specialised vehicles, the services of two quali ed guides, meals, accommodation, speci ed activities and most National Park fees.

Whats not included?Visas, vaccinations, items of a personal nature, alcohol, drinks, bottled water, snacks, activity packages and optional activities.

WHAT IS THE ACTIVITY PACKAGE (AP) FOR?This is an optional additional payment that covers what we consider to be essential activities on our tours. Ideally, we would include all of these but not everyone can afford this. This payment is 100% transparent and is listed within the itinerary of the tour. If you cannot afford it, or do not want to do the AP, rest assured that your tour will remain uninterrupted and meals and the services of the guides will continue. All the itineraries in this brochure are written with the Activity Packages included.

P Quality of product & value for money P Responsibility & accountability P Fun & adventure P Integrity & honesty P Service Excellence & ef ciency P Employment & opportunity

Nomads story began over 18 years ago when Alex Rutherford, founder and owner of Nomad, undertook a trans-Africa expedition lasting almost a year. On that journey he encountered numerous companies offering trips to Africa. A niche was noticed between strictly budget tours and the more upmarket operations. It was on that trip that the founding principle of Nomad was formed: Do it better and do it for less.

In those days we had one truck, 2 employees and one departure a month. Over the years weve grown to a eet of around 40 vehicles, 130 staff and 60 scheduled departures a month all over Africa.

Our success rests on consistently maintaining high standards in all aspects of our operation, while still retaining the magic and passion that saw us grow so successfully. We have not forgotten the lessons learned in the early days. Still wholly independent, we remain owner-managed and operated ensuring passionate attention to quality tours every single day.

Its obvious that 12 people in a 12 seater vehicle is not a small group as space is still at a premium and youre still travelling in a full vehicle and with some operators, this could be in a little van. A big advantage of Nomads small groups is that there is suf cient space and room to stretch out with only 12 people in a 24 seater truck.

    Small Groups

As we have been running these exact routes for the last 17 years, Nomad can assure you of a quality product that represents the best these areas have to offer and excellent value for money, a cornerstone of all Nomad products. Nomad Small group departures are limited to a maximum of 12 passengers. The good news is that we operate these tours in our standard 24 seater Adventure Trucks. As we like to say, 12 people in a 12 seater vehicle is not a small group. Space is at a premium and a big advantage of small groups should be space and room to stretch out. 12 people in 24 seater offers all that and more. But the best news of all is that the Small Group tour prices are on average only 8 - 15% more expensive than regular departures, offering incredible value for money!

    NEW FOR 2015

German Guided ToursWe have decided to offer our German guests more exibility when choosing a tour and will be including for 2015, German Guided tours. This means that our German guests can choose between either a standard scheduled departure which is conducted completely in English; a German Translated tour which has a translator on board the truck doing line by line translations (however the tour is still operated in English); or most excitingly, they can choose to do a fully German Guided tour where they can take the opportunity to have a quali ed German Guide on their truck with them.

We have offered this alternative as we have found that our German guests do have slightly different requirements on tour. For this reason, we will be offering the German Guided option on our Cape Town to Victoria Falls Accommodated tour and on our South African Explorer Self Accommodated tour.

The German Guided tours will be accommodated only and are recommended for those who would like a more comfortable experience as well as more

speci c historical, geographical and natural information provided to them

    in their home language.

On our German Guided tours, all breakfasts and dinners will be provided

    at restaurants and lodges.

Below you will nd a map of the routes that are available as well as a list of

tours that are available in a German Guided option and the dates that they

depart. For a full tour itinerary or dossier, please see our website, contact

one of our consultants or use the standard Cape Town to Vic Falls and South

African Self Explorer tour itineraries on page 36 and 48 in this brochure.

German Guided tours are also available on our Southern Circle Tour which

consists of a combination of our Cape Town to Vic Falls tour, a two day

transit from Vic Falls to Joburg and our South African Explorer South tour.

The itinerary for this tour can be found on page 62.

  • Our two day truck transit forms the link between many of our tours ending in Victoria Falls and starting in Johannesburg. This is the most cost effective way of travelling between the two points, however it is not a tour and it is literally a way for you to get from point A to point B. The reason that we offer this service is because ights between Victoria Falls and Johannesburg are relatively expensive and this is a great way to save some of your hard earned cash and spend a couple more days with your fellow travellers.

Day 1 Victoria Falls to Palapye / MartinsdriftAn early departure from Victoria Falls, we drive south through Botswana to Palapye, or the border post at Martinsdrift, where we will spend the night at a lively campsite. Optional activity: All meals

Day 2 Palapye / Martinsdrift to JohannesburgAnother early departure, we enter into South Africa. Covering the next 450 550 km on sealed roads we should get to Johannesburg as early as possible. There are no meals provided on the transit.

This transit departs every Tuesday and Saturday.

When we started Nomad back in the 1990s it was rare to have any contact with our clients once they had travelled with us. Quite often past clients returned, years later, and did another tour, so we knew they had enjoyed the rst one. Sometimes they sent us letters or postcards! Time has passed, we have always had feedback forms for clients, but once the trip is over most people are busy moving on to whatever comes next... back to work, another country, a volunteer placement, back to studies, back to retirement! So this is a reminder to please share those pictures, thoughts and videos before you get back to the real world again. Our guides appreciate it, we appreciate it and our past, present and future travellers appreciate it.

You will nd Nomad on Tripadvisor, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, Instagram, LinkedIn, Flickr and several other forums. You probably looked Nomad up using one, or many, of these

social networks before you travelled. All we ask is that when you have travelled with us that you please post some photos/video/thoughts with us and others. Mention our guides, they love getting feedback and let others know what to expect on a Nomad tour.

If you have a blog, send it to us, we may ask to share it with our online network. We have a new website which launched in 2014 and we always prefer to use photos, feedback and video from our past travellers. Its honest, authentic and gives our future travellers the best idea of what to expect. And, if you want to do things the old fashioned way, send us a postcard! The address is PO Box 2600, Somerset West, 7130, South Africa. We all look forward to hearing from you.

  • What Is Your Carbon Footprint All About?

Carbon Dioxide is one of the main greenhouse gases responsible for global warming. During photosynthesis carbon is absorbed from the atmosphere, reducing the unnaturally high levels that mankind caused. The planting of trees and vegetation is basically the only way to offset carbon.

Nomad has developed Green Seats on their tours to allow clients to travel responsibly in Africa and to offset the carbon footprint that is created through the fuel consumption on tour. One of the best plants when it comes to carbon absorption is the Spekboom (or Elephants Food as it is commonly known).

    What Is Spekboom?

Spekboom is an evergreen succulent that can reach a height of 2,5m and native to the arid cape region of South Africa occurs mainly in the South-Eastern Cape, especially around Baviaanskloof and the Addo Elephant National Park. Spekboom (Afrikaans, meaning pork bush) thickets can store 20 kilograms of carbon in every square meter of vegetation, or 200 tons of carbon per hectare roughly the same as what is absorbed by a moist, sub-tropical forest of the same size. Thats equivalent to taking 37 cars off the road for a year. Since most dryland areas similar to the cape store less than 50 metric tons of carbon per hectare and deciduous forests are estimated to store

120 metric tons per hectare, this nearly 8-foot-tall plant could be a key to future carbon-capture trading markets in arid regions The use of Spekboom delivers the most value for money in carbon capturing terms, and it also has the most signi cant ecological bene ts in terms of replenishing degraded areas. Unlike many arid plants, when soils are dry, spekboom can switch from the photosynthetic process that most plants in the world use to a less common and water-conserving photosynthesis pathway called CAM. Because of this, the carbon sequestration process in the plant is highly ef cient for its environment, allowing it to thrive on only 10-11 inches (250-350 millimeters) of rain a year. Researchers also believe spekbooms umbrella-shaped canopy allows organic material to accumulate at the base of the shrub, improving the water-holding capacity of the soil below.

    How Does It Work?

You can choose to offset the carbon created on your tour in full, or 50% thereof by simply ticking a box on your booking form or by letting your agent know. For example for a small contribution of ZAR 150 you can let us offset you carbon footprint of a 15 to 21 day tour, or ZAR 120 for an 8 to 14 day tour or ZAR 90 for a 1 to 7 day tour. All the funds that are collected are administered by the Nomad African Trust who will manage the project in conjunction with South African National Parks as well as the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and the Rhodes University. This project will bene t the ecological zones, the communities that are employed due to it as well as the global climate. Once you have bought your green seat you will receive an e-certi cate providing you with all the details of the project as well as contact Details should you wish to receive further information.

    Our Approach

In deciding how to proceed with the vision of the Trust we had to determine how we were going to approach the multitude of challenges facing Africa every day. We came up with these guiding principles:

    People, Places and Animals

To date we have been able to see positive results in our efforts and approach. Our continuing aim is to obtain funding from players in the tourism industry and other related sectors, in order to help and protect the very people, places and animals that these parties earn their living from. As such we are able to provide focussed and speci c help across these three fronts. Through this we have been able to effect real change by ensuring funding is spent in such a way so as to create permanent and long lasting bene ts to our bene ciaries.

    People

Many organisations focus on uplifting through modernisation, education and the like. While these are noble efforts we believe without jobs these drives are bound to fail. And so it is that we continue to focus heavily on job creation and

skills development. We also target basic human needs like food, shelter and health care which, in Africa, are all too often found wanting. Another focus on our drive is to continue to support and help uplift rural communities as we believe that the source of many of the problems facing Africa lie in the challenges facing these rural areas. Aside from funding projects undertaken by our bene ciaries in these rural communities, the Green Seats initiative, through our planting partners, creates long term employment for the communities near the planting sites.

    Places

Instead of the sole focus being on only the remote wild lands of Africa we tend to focus more on the urban environment and their immediate surroundings. Areas of successful tourism operations are for the most part already protected by their position in the spotlight. It is the lesser known places of Africa that often need the greatest help and exposure. We believe that diversity should remain one of the most treasured characteristics of this beautiful planet.

    Animals

Again, a huge amount of focus is already placed on the select few animals that generate the most interest. Although we are involved in anti-poaching initiatives and the protection of these creatures, our objective is also to assist with some of the lesser known animals in dire need of help. Our intention is to get involved in the breeding programmes and relocation of these species to their natural habitats and to restore these various regions to their former glory. One way we have been able to contribute to habitat restoration is through the Green Seats initiative.

    OUR BENEFICIARY PROJECTS:

*In addition to the xed bene ciary projects above, Nomad African Trust selects a Western Cape based N.P.O for every quarterly payment that is made. This ensures that we do our part to contribute to the upliftment of the communities directly surrounding and effected by our operation.
