Based on his memoirs Naufragios y comentarios. 7 de octubre LA FIESTA DE CHIVO Based on the novel by Mario Vargas Llosa, this is the story of Urania Cabral, a beautiful, kind, intelligent and independent Manhattan lawyer whom, after 30 years returns to República Dominicana to face her ghosts, and the horrifying circumstances that altered her life forever when she was a teenager and Rafael Leónidas Trujillo alias El Chivo (The Goat) was the iron-handed ruler of this island paradise. 14 de octubre PEDRO PÁRAMO Based on “Pedro Paramo” by Juan Rulfo. Juan Preciado leaves on a trip to his mother's native village to meet his father, Pedro Paramo, and reclaim his mother’s lands and inheritance. Once Juan arrives in Comala, a dust-bowl hell, he gradually comes to the realization that all the villagers are dead. Soon Juan discovers, through his interactions with these ghosts, the story of his father and how he single handily destroyed the town to its demise. 21 de octubre LA CASA DE BERNARDA ALBA Grief-stricken following the death of her husband, cold-blooded widow Bernarda forces her five daughters into observing an eight-year mourning period and forbids them to leave the house. Allowing her eldest child to be courted by the mysterious Pepe, Bernarda's world falls apart when desire for the nobleman consumes everyone in the sequestered household. 28 de octubre EL LÁPIZ DEL CARPINTERO Based on the homonym novel by Manuel Rivas published in 1998. Set in the dark days of the Spanish Civil War (1936). The Carpenter's Pencil charts the linked destinies of Dr. Daniel Da Barca, Herbal, and of the unnamed painter with the carpenter's pencil. The novel was a bestseller in Spain, and has been made into a movie. 4 de noviembre SOLDADOS DE SALAMINA Based on the book by Javier Cercas published in 2001. A novelist (Gil) who has abandoned her writing career tracks down the details of a true story from the last days of the Spanish Civil War. The novelist pieces together the fragments of the story, plagued by contradictions and mysterious characters, and comes to realize that a searching for the truth is sometimes a personal quest of self-discovery. 11 de noviembre EL CORONEL NO TIENE QUIEN LE ESCRIBA Based in the novel El coronel no tiene quien le escriba de Gabriel García Márquez. A retired colonel waits in vain for his government pension and travels to the docks each day dressed in his finest to wait for its delivery. Everyone in the small coastal town knows the pension will never arrive, as does the Colonel, yet he refuses to give up hope. A remarkable study of a man's inner strength that has been damaged by years of waiting. 18 de noviembre LOS DE ABAJO Based on the homonym novel by Mariano Azuela, this is the most violent, passionate and brutal chronicle of the Mexican Revolution and of the Mexican history. Set during the Mexican Revolution (1910), LOS DE ABAJO tells the story of a rancher named Demetrio whose life takes a drastic turn when a local tyrant burns down his home. 2 de diciembre OBABA Based in the novel Obabakoak by Bernardo Atxaga This shimmering, unpredictable novel--possessed of the timelessness of a fairy tale and informed by the lore of the oral tradition--tells of life in a remote, exotic Basque village. A rural drama set in Obaba, a mythical region in northern Spain, where a young filmmaker struggled to capture the feel of the area, which in turn leads to a wealth of self-discovery.
