Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry 2010 Speaks at HSMC New Perspectives on Chemicals and Community Safety
In recent years, chemical issues stir up concerns along with the fast development of technology in our communities. To raise the awareness of chemical safety in community, Centre for Corporate Sustainability and Innovations (CCSI), Hang Seng Management College (HSMC) will hold the “Living and Society - Socio-Environmental Issues and Sustainable Development” Seminar on 29 October with Professor Ei-ichi Negishi, the Nobel Prize Winner in Chemistry 2010. He will give a public speech concerning the relationship between chemicals and community safety as well as the key to a sustainable society. Professor Simon S M Ho, President of HSMC, will deliver opening remarks at the Seminar. “Living and Society – Socio-Environmental Issues and Sustainable Development” Seminar aims at raising the awareness of proper chemical knowledge, application, storage and treatment for community. It also provides the participants with the business acumen in the chemical sector, and the development of sustainability and entrepreneurship in our society. From the Remarks at Summit for the Adoption of the Post-2015 Development Agenda, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, General Assembly, 25 September 2015 mentioned that “I am encouraged that several countries are already working to incorporate the 2030 Agenda into their national development strategies. But no-one can succeed working alone. We must engage all actors, as we did in shaping the Agenda. We must include parliaments and local governments, and work with cities and rural areas. We must rally businesses and entrepreneurs. We must involve civil society in defining and implementing policies – and give it the space to hold us to account. We must listen to scientists and academia. We will need to embrace a data revolution. Most important, we must set to work – now.” Dr Shirley Yeung, Director, Centre for Corporate Sustainability and Innovations and Convener of the activity would like to promote “Design Thinking” to teenagers (Mootee, 2013, p. 39) about the different elements in the ecosystem related to one another and if any systems-level impact exists. The Objectives of “Living and Society – Social Environmental Issues and Sustainable Development” Seminar are:
1. To help community develop awareness in chemicals with the environment , e.g. reactive and proactive actions, storage and handling, well-being of the community; and
2. To develop the capabilities of young people to be pioneers in identifying entrepreneurship opportunities in relation to knowledge of social issues and science with sustainable value and responsibility for the community and society at large.
The followings are the expected outcomes of the Seminar:
1. To produce a short video of demonstrating methods to help young people develop
awareness in chemicals with the environment for well-being of the community; and
2. To write stories about methods of developing the capabilities of young people to be pioneers
in identifying entrepreneurship opportunities in relation to knowledge of chemicals with
sustainable value and responsibility for the community and society at large.
