Hello Collectors Welcome to the November–December edition of the Stamp Bulletin and the remaining stamp issues and collectable items for the year.

Cultural sites of worldwide significance are celebrated by a stamp issue that depicts four Australian sites inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. To be released in late October, World Heritage Australia features properties listed for their cultural significance, outstanding beauty and universal value.

The inaugural W.S. Cox Plate was held in 1922 at the newly established Moonee Valley Racecourse in outer Melbourne. English horse Violoncello took out first win honours. The event is an important part of the spring racing carnival each year and has brought legendary status to a number of winners, including champion mare Winx, who won the W.S. Cox Plate an unequalled four times.

This year’s Christmas stamp issue focuses on Australian themes. Paintings by Leopoldine Mimovich OAM (1920 – 2019) have been reproduced on the religious stamps and minisheet, and illustrations by Sarah Allen feature on the secular designs. Both issues combine traditional iconography with Australian fauna and flora, including kangaroo paw, bottlebrush and waratah. Christmas Island Christmas continues the theme of Santa and a few of the locals celebrating Christmas in their own unique way.

To assist general mail users wishing to send greetings overseas during the Covid-19 pandemic, the acceptance date for international Christmas card mail was brought forward to 1 October. As a result, this year’s general release international Christmas stamps have been made available earlier. The official philatelic date of release for the 2020 Christmas stamp issues remains unchanged and is recorded as such on products such as first day covers and maxicards.

Four Australian sites have been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List solely on the basis of their cultural significance. The Royal Exhibition Building and Carlton Gardens in Melbourne, Victoria, was constructed to host the Melbourne International Exhibition in 1880. It is the oldest building in the world from the Great Exhibition era still operating as an exhibition hall. The Budj Bim Cultural Landscape on the traditional country of the Gunditjmara people, in Victoria’s Western District. The site includes one the world’s most extensive and ancient aquaculture systems,

constructed at least 6,600 years ago to trap and harvest kooyang or Short-finned Eels. Australia’s most famous building, the Sydney Opera House in New South Wales, was formally opened by the Queen in 1973. This great modernist masterpiece was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon. The Cascades Female Factory in Hobart, Tasmania, operated between 1828 and 1856 as a workhouse for female convicts. Intended to segregate women for their own protection and moral improvement, at its peak the factory held 1,200 women and children in overcrowded conditions.

The W.S. Cox Plate celebrates a significant milestone in 2020 with the 100th running of the LEGENDARY Group 1 race. As the undisputed Weight-For-Age Championship of Australasia, it has an honour roll that is the envy of the racing world with a cavalcade of Australian turf’s greatest stars listed in its history books.

The race was named after a pioneer of thoroughbred racing in Australia, William Samuel (W.S.) Cox (1831–1895). Cox opened Kensington Park Racecourse, in 1874, which operated until

1882. The following year he founded the Moonee Valley Racing Club in suburban Melbourne on land he had purchased from John F Feehan. Today the racecourse is simply known as “The Valley”.

The inaugural W.S. Cox Plate was run in 1922 with English horse Violoncello taking out the honours and the race quickly grew in prominence. In 1946, the race was run in two divisions, resulting in the event being recorded in the official record books twice for that year.

Each of the 99 runnings has delivered unique and unmistakable moments in Moonee Valley Racing Club’s history. Champions have won the race time after time, such as the “Race of the Century”, when New Zealand champions Our Waverley Star and Bonecrusher fought for position from the 600-metre mark, and the performance of Kingston Town rising at the last to win a record third W.S. Cox Plate.

In recent times winners have included Makybe Diva, So You Think and the champion of all

champions, the great Winx. With jockey Hugh Bowman on board, the popular mare raced into the history books as the only horse to have ever won four W.S. Cox Plates. Racegoers at The Valley that day were jubilant, and many believe the achievement will never be equalled.

The unique 100th W.S. Cox Plate Trophy is manufactured in Australia and features a 9ct Solid Yellow Gold Plate and feet, with 9ct White Gold Rosemount edges and emblems, weighing approximately 1.6kgs and valued at $200,000.

This year’s Christmas stamps focus on Australian themes. The religious stamps feature the art of Leopoldine Mimovich OAM (1920–2019). Born in the Italian Tyrol, Mimovich studied in Vienna and Hallstatt, before migrating to Australia with her husband Leo aboard the migrant ship Skaugum in 1949. Over the years, she became a celebrated artist and received many honours, including an Order of the Medal of Australia (OAM) in 1985 for her service to sculpture. Her work is represented in many private collections, churches and public buildings in Australia and throughout the world,

including the United Nations Art Collection in New York.

The painting on the minisheet, representing the Madonna and Child, is painted in the Byzantine tradition of the Eastern Church and early Italian panel painting. Dressed in a richly coloured robe, the Madonna tenderly cradles the infant Christ. The three artworks featured on the stamps and minisheet are reproduced from paintings in the art collection of the Australian Catholic University.

The stamp paintings reflect the artist’s European heritage while also demonstrating her love of her adopted land. Along with the Madonna and Child we see an array of native flora, including banksia, wattle, eucalyptus and waratah. Various animals, such as a Magpie, Kookaburra, owl, Koala, possum, wallaby, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo and parrots are perched in the foliage, as if paying homage to the Christ Child.

The three non-religious or secular stamps continue the theme by combining traditional iconography and Australiana. Melbourne-based designer and illustrator Sarah Allen has represented three objects associated with Christmas: a wreath, a stocking and a plum pudding, and has festooned each with plants and flowers, including bottlebrush, kangaroo paw and waratah, with a native Flame Robin on the wreath.

This year, for Christmas Island Christmas, we present a festive musical scene, set in the Christmas Island Dales. Under the shade of a fig tree, Santa is conducting a choir of enthusiastic carol-singing seabirds, including a Hawk Owl duet and a White Tropicbird solo, in the soprano line, and some Red-footed Boobies and Common Noddies singing the bass line. Rudolph is leading the Christmas band. He’s playing a Malaysian kompang, which is a small hand-held drum, while

Red Crabs and Giant Geckos are bashing their cymbals and gongs to keep the beat. True to form, the Robber Crab has taken the opportunity to steal an ornament from the beautifully decorated Christmas tree, but he’s been spotted by the Christmas Island Flying Fox, who has been woken from his sleep. On top of the tree is a Christmas Island Emerald Dove. She is singing along with low, soft coos, as endemic butterflies dance overhead.

Placing an order

Online via auspost.com.au/stampsThe best way to place an order is via the online shop. This allows for immediate payment and delivery to your nominated address. Delivery delays may be experienced as the COVID-19 situations develops.

By email to [email protected] you already pay for mail orders using a current credit card, you can email an order to the Philatelic Bureau. Under no circumstances should you send credit card details via email.

By telephone (at this time)Our ability to process orders over the phone may be greatly reduced or become unavailable without notice. If you need to place an order with new credit card details you can only do this via phone or through the online shop.
