M YHEM CUP VIIIB y Kei th ChristiansonIn 2010, the gauntlet was thrown down. Mayhem Comics

Games in Des Moines, Iowa commissioned a travellingtrophy, and a Midwestern grudge match was born. Playersbanded together to represent their local game stores, eachteam attempting to demonstrate its dominance and bringthe cup home. The rules are simple: players score points for their teambased on their individual standing at the end of the day.The team with the highest score wins the right to emblazontheir names upon the illustrious trophy and gains thebragging rights that go along with it. The first Mayhem Cupfeatured only thirty-six people from five different states:Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, and Nebraska. Twoyears and seven Mayhem Cups later, the tournament hasseen over a hundred players from ten different states, withcombatants travelling from as far as Delaware and Texas. The cup returned to Iowa this March after a stay at MistyMountain Games in Madison, Wisconsin for MayhemCup VIII, sponsored by Mayhem Comics Games andmuseonminis.com. The ninety-two players in the mainevent were divided into two flights. After day one, thetop eight players from each flight were cordoned off tocontinue the battle for the prize. Meanwhile, the rest ofthe attendees broke off to play in the fast-paced, late night20-point Softcore event. ,When the final rounds of the main event were heldthe next day, Andy Welton (PG_Majortusk) ran one ofhis ever-popular Who's The Boss? events. Severaleight-man scrambler tournaments kept the competitiveWARMACHINE and HORDES action going all weekendlong. When the dust settled, Wild Bill Pagani stoodundefeated and his Texas Renegades, playing for AsgardGames in Houston1 claimed the cup by the slimmestof margins, eking out the win over the Dice Dojo fromChicago, Illinois. The final standings were as follows:Will Paga niTom McLaughlinJordan NachDan SammonMichael PuryearChad Chad Shonwiler ShonkwilerJordan BoichutErik Nelson

SMOGCON 2013y Jon Webb \Nith thanks to Tom Hutchins and Norber t Brunhuber)February 15th saw the triumphant return of SmogConto Firestorm Games in Cardiff, Wales. With organizedand casual play for WARMACHINE and HORDES,painting lessons and competitions, plus gaming sessionsfor the Iron Kingdoms Full Metal Fantasy Roleplaying GameMonsterpocalypse and LEVEL 7 [ESCAPE] this was amongthe finest celebrations of Privateer Press games ever heldhere in the UK.Players trayelled from mainland Europe and the fourcorners of the British Isles to take part in three days

. of qualifying clashes, hoping to earn their place in theSmogCori championship and stand victorious overtheir foes. ~ t h numerous competitive gaming formats, including Steamroller and the UK s first official Hardcoretournament; players had to bring their best if they hopedto reach the Sunday finals. Martin Hornacek of Slovakiaearned his place by winning the opening event of theweekend, then went on to defeat Lewis Johnson in a hardfought match to seize the title of SmogCon 2013 champion. While most of the full-on action was taking place atthe competitive tables, the more artistic attendees wereslugging it out in a series of speed-painting rounds.A rainbow of Pyg Burrowers was painted, and aftereight rounds and a final involving several Royal GuardColeman Stryker miniatures, Stuart Hunter was declaredthe Speed Painting champion. Also being held at the convention was the first Golden ThrallMaster Painter Competition. With numerous categories anda Formula P3-inspired judging process, painters of all skilllevels were invited to showcase their talents and fight forthe Golden Thrall coins. Ultimately, Nick Robert s stunningKaya the Moonhunter and her battlegroup took best in show;rumors of Laris being finished the night before the event arecurrently unsubstantiated.Several paint ers were also on hand to guide novices andexperts alike through various techniques and paintingstyles. With some of last year s painting competitionwinners included in these lessons, we look forward toseeing entries of even greater quality in the 2014 GoldenThrall contest.

Returning from last year s show, the notorious IronKingdoms quiz was back to test even the most well-readPrivateer Press player. The new picture round, in whichcontestants struggled to name famous weapons fromthe Iron Kingdoms, proved to be the undoing of manyentrants . The ultimate prize of a Convergence of Cyrissfaction patch, which had somehow found its way to ourshores, inspired competitors to carry on.Rounding out this weekend of gaming, the SmogPit wasfree to casual players to grab pickup games against bothold friends and new. The tables were always a hive ofactivity, and plans are underway to make the SmogPiteven bette r next year.SmogCon also continued its charitable tradition, raisingover 400 for the British Heart Foundation in memory ofPress Ganger Leon Vickers, who passed away at the startof the year. Humble thanks to everyone who contributed. Thanks must go out to all the Press Gangers andvolunteers who crewed the convention and made itsuch a great success, and to all the players who joinedus. Without you there would be no show, so please joinus again next year for SmogCon 2014. Plans are alreadyin place to ensure SmogCon 2014 can hold a growingnumber of players, and offer even more gaming and socialactivities to make the event better than ever. For more details and picture, please visitwww. smogcon.wordpress.com.

~Convergence of Cyriss does n ot u se warjacks in the

ditional sense. Their machines are built using arcane scienced with applied physics and mathematics. Each comp leted

s an act of wo rship to the Maiden of Gears as we ll asirrefutable triumph of engineering. The smoo th lines andsanai at tention to detail contras t wi th the pu re bru talitythe science of kinematics can inflict on enemies of thekwork Godd ess.ors are wa rjacks. In addition t o the stand ard warjack rulesW RMACHINE Prime II, Warjacks ) vec tors h avefo llowing ru les.

odee I boxes of a vector ' s damage grid represent its in terfacee. The interface node functions ident ically to a cortexW RM CHINE Prime Mk II, p. 73 ) fo r the purposes ofting and spen, ding focus.use an interface no de is not a cortex, vectors are immune

cts that cause a w arjack to suffer damage directly to itstex (such as Cor tex Da mage and Shock Field) or that requ ire

rjack to have a functional cortex (such as Domina tion andn ).

onally, a vector cannot form a w arjack bond, since it d oest have a cortex.

M T and R Ttors do not h ave MAT or RAT values. Instead, their MATRAT are equ al to the cu rrent MAT an d RAT of theirrolling w arcaster. For examp le, a vector under the contro l

    FO US INDU TION

of a warcas ter wh o ha s MAT 6 and RAT 4 would h ave MAT 6and RAT 4. Vectors do not di rectly be nefit from MAT /RATbonuses or suffer from MAT I RAT penalties, but anyMAT / RAT alterations to a w arcaster contro lling one or morevectors will b e passed along to hi s vectors .No te that spells and abilities that affect attack rolls w ill stillaffect vectors normally. For examp le, the Conserva tor h eavyvector s Hand of Vengeance gran ts it +2 on attack and damagerolls. Its MAT will remain equal to the warcaster s MAT, but itwill gain +2 on its melee a ttack rolls from Hand of Vengeance.Focus InductionOnce per turn dur ing its activation, when a vector spend s afocus point you can allocate a focu s point to another vector ithe two are in the same battlegroup and are w ithin 6 of oneanother. Each vector can use fo cus induction only once per turnto alloca te a focus poin t to another vector but can b e allocatedmore than 1 focus point in a single turn i it is wi thin 6 ofmultiple other vectors when they spend focus.Rem ote ReactivationVectors become iner t when their cont rolling w arcasters aredestr oyed. Vec tors can b e reactivated only by friend ly Factionmo dels wi th the Battlegroup ~ special ability.A Convergence wa rcaster can reactivate a friendly inertvec tor even if it is not B2B with the vector. The warcaster canforfeit his action to reactiva te a friend ly ve ctor up to 6 awayprovided the vector h as a functional in terface node. A vectorwi th a cripp led in terface node cannot be reactiva ted remotely.

Focus induction can be an efficient use of focus with a little planning. Inthis example, the Convergence pl yer gets three boosted rolls out of ust 1focus point. InverterFirst, Diffuser A forfeits its movement to aim, makes its attack roll, and hitsth Defender. Di ffuser A spends 1 focus point to boost its damage roll. Usingfocus induction, the Convergence player allocates 1 focus point to Dif fuser B,vector in the same battlegroup and within 6 of DiffuserA. Diffuser A thenmakes its damage roll. Before attacking, Diffuser B moves closer to the Inverter, a model in the samebattlegroup, so it is within 6 and therefore close enough to use focus inductionagain. Diffuser B boosts its attack roll t the Defender. Using focus induction,th Convergence player allocates 1 focus point to the Inverter. Dif fuser B thenfinishes resolving its attack.Lastly the Inverter can attack the Defender and use the focus point it receivedfrom Diffuser B. Each vector in the battlegroup was able to boost a roll usingjut one focus point due to focus induction.

Forge Master SyntherionPerhaps closer to absolute synergy with the machine thanany other Convergence leader, Forge Master Syntherion haslong surrendered all human emotion. He finds no use forpity or mercy, and in every engagement seeks to eliminate allopposition with ruthless efficiency. The forge master has nopatience for variables and thus makes heavy use of vectors, whose actions he controls with artistic mastery. Clockworksoldiers who accompany him in battle know only too wellthat there will be no allowance for error, and that Syntherionwill discard without hesitation any who fail him. In hiscalculations there is no possibility of redemption.

Using Forge Master SyntherionForge Master Syntherion is perfectly suited to bringinga large battlegroup to bear against the enemies of theConvergence of Cyriss. His Field Marshal [Auto-Repair]ability removes d3 damage points per htrn from everymodel in his battlegroup. Additionally, Syntherion sMAT 6 and RAT 5 give his vectors some prettyimpressive base stats, which can then be enhancedwith various abilities throughout the faction. Lastly, his Resourceful ability allows him to upkeep his manybattlegroup spells without spending additional focus.Players will want to take full advantage of.Resourcefulby upkeeping Synergy, Hot Shot, and Reconstructevery turn. Since itboosts all of a vector s ranged attack damage rolls, HotShot is best used on a Prime Axiom, but it can also beimpressive on a Cipher, boosting every damage rollfrom its Bombardment servipods. Reconstruct will giveone of Syntherion s vectors a second chance after it isdisabled, so keep it on the most valuable vector in thepath of danger. In addition to his Resourceful-enabled battlegroupspells, Syntherion has Convection for direct magicaldamage and Magnetic Hold for a combination buffdebuff spell. While its accuracy is noteworthy,it s the homing ripspike's Beaconability that really sets the Diffuserapart. Beacon allows other vectors

Designation: InverterIteration: 1Lead Innovator: Forge Master MeridianDesign Approved: 399 ARInception Date: 402 ARt has become apparent that the most widely employed heavy

vector chassis, designation Aggregator, is unsatisfactorilyarmed and insufficiently resilient to meet present demands.Recent clashes have shown the Aggregator s difficulty inpenetrating heavy armor, and a single Aggregator is rarelysufficient to neutralize a comparable warjack.AltHough the Aggregator is capable of serving in a combatrole and has done so with moderate efficacy, this was notintended to be its primary function. As the threats we faceescalate, a more forcible weapon platform is needed, onededicated to protracted combat against the most resilientenemies. Recent breakthroughs in weapon design, coupledwith innumerable parallel advances, have made it possibleto construct a new vector to replace the Aggregator, onebetter suited to our current and future offensive needs. The proposed vector, designation Inverter, shares somesimilarities with the Aggregator, primarily its base motivedesign and optical array. However, we have upgraded thesesystems with current technology, improving ambulatorystability and target acquisition speed. The Inverter departs from the Aggregator in its armament, making use of our newest and most destructive innovations.First among these new armaments is the macropummeler, which is based partly on the design of the piston spike. However, the macropummeler employs an efficient system ofgears and ratchet drives rather than the high tensile springsused by the pis ton spike. This new system can store nearly 60percent more kinetic energy than older designs. In addition, themacropummeler's striking arm is more robust and fitted with aconcussive impact hammer tipped with a hardened point. Thisstriking arm can deliver a blow strong enough to sunder armorand drive even a heavy warjack to a supine position. As pleased as we are with the macropummeler, it does haveone i g n i f i ~ drawback. After firing, the striking arm mustbereset by internal cogs connected to the ratche t drive, renderingthe weapon inoperative during this process. Reliance on thisweapon as a sole means of offense is untenable . Therefore, theInverter will be fitted with a secondary weapon system. Theproposed de'sign for the secondary weapon system, called ameteor hammer, consists of a spiked striking head attachedto a flexible steel chain. This weapon can be swung at greatspeeds, using angular momentum to deliver the inertial forceof the weapon s head to a target's armor plating, crushing notonly the plating but transferring the force to more vulnerablesystems beneath. The Inverter's innovative design makes retrofitting existingAggregators impossible, although raw materials can be

obtained from the older chassis. I realize this proposal requiresa large investment of time and resources, but we cannot sit idleand trust the defenses of our temples to archaic designs whenadvancement is well within our grasp.-Forge Master Meridian, AR 397

Designation: InverterIteration: 19Lead Innovator: Optifex Uther KorranDesign Approved: 497 ARInception Date: 500 ARForge Mq.ster Meridian has entrusted me with identifyingopportunities for improvement in the heavy vector chassisdesignated Inverter. While the forge master s initial designsare both elegant and inspired, minor adjustments to theInverter s macropummeler would undoubtedly increase itsbattlefield utility.

e have recently synthesized a sturdier brass alloy that canwithstand higher levels of heat and stress. The retractiongears within the macropummeler s arm housing arecurrently constructed of an inferior alloy that necessitates aslower retraction speed lest the gears overheat and fail. f wereplace the main helical wheel within the arm housing withthe new alloy, we can increase rotational velocity, resultingin a 19 percent increase in retraction speed and reducing thetime necessary to reset the striking arm. This would allowa controlling warcaster access to the Inverter s most potentarmament on a more frequent basis, increasing his or herability to neutralize enemy targets. This upgrade would require little in the way of labor orresources, and I believe we could retrofit the majority ofexisting Inverters within a matter of months.-Optifex Uther Korran, AR 495

In addition to granting the Inverter increased reach, the increased control will more fully enable the Inverter tostrike around barriers, negating certain defenses. The cost and labor required to make this improvement isnegligible, and even the least experienced optifex amongus could swap the older style of chain for the new in lessthan an hour.-Fluxion Uther Korran, AR 599 .

Designation: CipherIteration: 1Lead Innovator: Forge Master MeridianDesign Approved: 4 1 ARInception Date: 405 ARAlthough my previous vector design, designation I n v e r t e 1 ~ fillsa required role as a primary close-combat e c t 0 1 ~ I believe thereexists a need to further enhance om vector arsenal. Om existingheavy vector chassis lack ranged armament, making it difficultfor om warcasters to neutralize certain threats. With that inmind, I have designed a new heavy v e c t 0 1 ~ designation Cipher, which offers a more versatile weapons platform, one that iseffective in close combat but can also engage enemies at range. My proposal for the Cipher s close-combat armament is toutilize the simplistic yet effective p iston spike. Although thenow outmoded Aggregator makes use of this weapon, andin its present form it is i n a d ~ q u a t e for out needs, I believe itcan be improved significantly with little effort. We have madegreat strides in improving the tensile strength of high-tensionsprings, and the proposed Cipher features a pair of pistonspikes that can store up to 15 percent more potential energy, increasing the weapon s armor piercing capabilities whenconverted to kinetic energy in combat. The Cipher s potential ranged armament is limited, as itsclose-combat weapons and heavily armored hull already pushthe maximum weight its displacement field generator canhandle. Therefore, ranged armament must be lightweight. Ashoulder-mounted ripspike launcher is the bes t choice for thisdesign. The firing assembly and ammunitionare light enoughthey will not overtax the Cipher s motive systems, and theweapon has proveneffective against a variety of targets, frominfantry to light warjacks.Like the Inverter, the Cipher is based on the Aggregatorchassis. However, unlike the Inverter, the new Ciphers can becreated from existing Aggregators with a significant retrofit. This will allow us to upgrade all Aggregators in service inthe most efficient way possible. Subsequently, we can beginfabricating new Ciphers as required.-Forge Master Meridian, AR 399

Designation: CipherIteration: 27Facilitator: Forge Master MeridianDesign Approved: 444 ARInception Date: 446 AR.An annual review of the Cipher s utility on the field of battlehas revealed opportunities for improvement. Warcasterscontrolling Ciphers in battle laud the devastating power ofits twin piston spikes, but have expressed dissatisfaction withits ripspike launcher. Primarily intended for close-combat,the vector s range weaponry does little to support its role onthe battlefield. Recent innovations in servitor techrlology mayprovide an answer to the Cipher s perceived shortcoming.Success in the miniaturization of servitor units has allowed usto convert these incredibly useful automatons into a type ofintelligent ammunition. The proposed servipod mortar wouldposses the capability to fire a group of miniatme servitors withspring-driven metal components that fly apart on impact, becoming deadly piercing shrapnel. These explosive servipodswould be most effective against groups of lightly armoredinfantry, which have the potential to swamp om vectors andhamper their ability to close with more serious threats.Replacing ripspike launchers with servipod mortars is afairly complex retrofit, but the weapons possess sufficientlycomparable size and weight that the upgrade is possible. Omwarcasters will no doubt be in need of this versatility in thebattles to come, and this upgrade will increase the Cipher seffectiveness by a significant degree.-Forge Master Meridian, 443 AR

Designation: CipherIteration: 51Facilitator: Optifex Kalias RenaldDesign Approved: 5 ARInception Date: 512 ARIn an effort to improve the hull integrity of e x i ~ t i n g vectors,we have recently perfected a higher-grade c a r b b steel alloythat is both stronger and lighter than. those cmrently used invector construction. The reduced weight would not provideadditional speed to the Cipher, but would allow us to upgradeother systems with more robust components. f the outer hullof the Cipher were lightened by 10 percent, we could improvethe displacement field generator by increasing the size of thegyroscopic stabilizer. The primary benefit to this adjustmentwould be vastly increased stability for the vector.Retrofitting existing Ciphers with the new hulls would beprohibitively expensive and extraordinarily time consuming;therefore, I propose these designs be implemented in theconstruction of all new Ciphers.-Optifex Kalias Renald, 510 AR

Althougheffective, the servipod mortar provides one-dimensionalranged capability. The Cipher would be more effective andversatile i additional types of servipod ammunition weremade available. The proposed upgrade to the servipod mortar wouldallow the Warcasters controlling Ciphers to make useof two new types of servipod ammunition. We can improve the Monitor's close combatcapabilities by focusing on that which it does well-takinghold of an enemy with its grasping claw. R ~ l i a b i l i t l G u a r a n t ~ ~ dThe quadruped heavy vector chassis is slightly slower thanthe faction's t h e ~ vectors, but it also has the highest baseARM, 32 Ciamage boxes, and is immune to knockdowneffeets. This allows the Cipher, Inverter, and Monitor to stayin the fight longer than other vectors. This sturdiness is even more of a factor when one takes theConvergence.,s restorative abilities into consideration. With anumber of models having Repair or Bodge, it's not difficultto keep these heavy vectors operating at maximum efficiency.Under the control of Forge Master Syntherion these vectorsare especially durable, healing d3 damage points every turnthanks to his Field Marshal [Auto-Repair] ability.Repairing warjacks is a tactic available to other factions as well, but the Convergence has an important tool no other factionsshare-focus induction. The most debilitating system for awarjack to lose is its cortex (or in this case, its interface node).Even if the warjack is subsequently repaired, if its cortex is in acrippled state during the control phase, it rarely has a means ofgaining focus points. The focus induction ability, however, is aneasy way around this limitation. On any activation that a vectorspends focus, you can allocate one focus point to another vectorwithin 6. Depending on which other vectors are activatingwhere, an Inverter that began the turn with a cr ippled interfacenode can charge into battle at maximum efficiencyForge Master Syntherion' s Field Marshal ability isn t the onlyone that can be used to great effect with these heavy vectors.Iron Mother Directrix can use each of these iron giants asan Arc Node, Father Lucant allows them to Shield Guardweaker allies, and Axis grants them Counter Charge-a trulyimpressive ability considering their melee prowess. ItsP+S 18 piston spikes are a great melee threat, and its servipodmortar is a versatile ranged tool. With ROF 2 and AOE 4, theservipod mortar doesn t even need a high RAT to get the job

done. Each shot can dish out a POW 6 blast, create a zone ofrough terrain, or inflict -2 DEF on models in the AOE. In earlyturns, use the Cipher to hinder enemies with Crater or assistallies with Flare before switching gears to take advantage ofmultiple high-P+S melee weapons. The Inverter is melee-focused through and through, sohigh-MAT warcasters are the way to go with this vector. Itsmacropummeler boasts an impressive P+S 20 with automaticknockdown, and its meteor hammer has Reach, ChainWeapon, and P+S 17. Though the macropurnmeler can onlybe used once each round, combining that hit with a flurry ofmeteor hammer attacks allows a focus-loaded Inverter to dishout some serious damage. The Monitor is the heavy vector for Convergence warcasterswith higher RAT values. Its ellipsaw flinger is tied for thelongest range in the faction at RNG 13, and it has POW13 with Critical Brutal Damage for the potential of up tofour damage dice. Its True Sight ability also allows it to seethrough concealment, Camouflage, and Stealth, making ita truly impressive sniper under Directrix or Syntherion. U ~ c t o r upportThe Cipher itself is a great support for Inverters, Monitors, oreven other Ciphers, but these three vectors can take advantageof all sorts of other army support as well. Auto-Repair, Repair, and Bodge are all great tools for keeping

these vectors in the fight, and a few Galvanizers, priests, orAccretion Servitors will ensure your vectors are fighting-fit.

n addition to repair duty, Convergence priests have a couple of other very important ways to support heavy vectors.Unfortunately it's too early to expound upon that, but thisarticle simply wouldn t be complete without at least someportent of their vector suppor t.

The Attunement Servitors have the same Flare ability as theCipher, causing -2 DEF within a 4 AOE. Even more severe, the Mitigator can knock enemies to the ground thanks toQuake, drastically reducing DEF against ranged attacks andallowing melee attacks to hit automatically. These are bothgreat tools for conserving focus points for boosting attackrolls, thus maximizing damage output .

Diffuser light vectors can be a heavy vector' s best friends. They typically need just 1 focus point, and focus inductionallows them to pass that focus along to a nearby Cipher,Inverter, or Monitor. Their homing ripspike's Beacon ability also allows the heavy vector to charge for free nd movean additional2".

Y RO H WKINSf you re like me, once you finally get your Convergence of Cyriss Battlegroup Starter you ll want to put your models on

the table right away. I ve long prided myself on gaming only with painted miniatures, so before I unleash the Convergenceon my opponents, Forge Master Syntherion and his vectors need to get painted. Fast.Since the Convergence models are all-metal constructs, priming them black and drybrushing Cold Steel over the surfacecan be a pretty tempting ~ o l u t i o n However, while I ve always been a fan of drybrushing and use the technique almostexclusively in my terrain, on a small miniature it can look sloppy and rushed. On top of that, the Convergence models havea lot of delicate limbs not the sort of thing you want to vigorously brush. What follows is a quick way to turn out an effective and clean Convergence paint scheme. We ll match official faction colorsand use simple basecoats and washes to get the job done (okay, and a little drybrushing, too).Paint the entire battlegroup together, using an assembly-line process to work on all the parts as a single batch so you canwork quickly and finish the models together. f you can maintain your focus and power through this process, you ll havethese models painted in a matter of hours.

MODEL ASSEMBLY PRIMINGAssemble the models, keeping some limbs separate so it's easier to access all the details without the arms getting in theway. Use popsicle sticks and dowels to hold the parts, pinning each in place with a thick brass rod. The images belowshow how to best separate the major components of each model.

    P INTING TH OUTER HULL

You'll notice I've glued sand to the bases and then gluedthe models on top of the sand. This is so I could get asecure bond to the base without the sand obscuring theminiature's feet, as would happen i it were added atthe end. The sand will be painted in the final steps asweathering is applied to the n\odels.Spray the models with Formula P3 Black Primer. Tryto get solid coverage, but don t agonize over it i thespray doesn't penetrate into every nook and cranny. Thewashes will adequately cover any bald spots.

Step 1 Coat all the parts with Cold Steel darkened with a touch of Pig Iron. A Formula P3 Large Drybrush or LargeFlat Brush works best for this. Wet the brush and blot it dry on a paper towel. Then, apply the paint using a normaldrybrushing technique. The moisture still in the brush will allow the paint to penetrate into the recesses more thani this were a true drybrush. (If you ve ever attempted drybrushing with a brush that wasn t fully dry, you'll knowexactly what I mean.) I find this method is faster than applying a standard basecoat because you don t need to worryabout precision.Work across the model, taking care not to let the paint gum up the details, until you have a smooth, metallic coat.

tep 2 Next wash the entire model withArmor Wash.Use the wash straight from the bottle without thinningand ensure it gets in all the recesses. Take care not to letthe wash pool on the surface or completely fill in details

the art deco designs or screw heads. f you see thishappening pull some of the excess wash off the modelwith a clean dry brush.

The resul t is a nicelyshaded and suitablydark metallic part.

tep 3 After the wash has completely dried drybrushthe model with Cold Steel and then Quick Silver using aproperly dry brush. A Formula P3 Large Flat Brush is themost effective brush for this.

P INTING TH C RBON ST LThis step allows you to add variety to your miniatures. The intention is to add contrast between the different areas ofthe model and break up the all-metallic surface. f you re matching the studio scheme, look at the images and galleryshots to see where the carbon steel plates are located, but feel free to add as much or as little carbon as you like. f youprefer to deviate from the studio faction colors, you could even apply a different color wash.

Mix a wash of Greatcoat Grey, Armor Wash, and a little water. The areas receiving this carbon steel wash are mostlyrecessed, so you don t need a particularly steady hand to stay within the lines. Use a Formula P3 Work Studio Brushand lay in the color with a continuous sweeping stroke to avoid any overlapping lines as the wash begins to dry.The original silver highlighting will show through the wash. f you find the wash has o n ~ on heavy, to the point ofturning the area too grey, simply drybrush a little Pig Iron on the surface after the wash has dried. That will recapturethe metallic shine.

P INTING TH BR SS GE RS ND COGSFor even more contrast, a few parts should be picked out as brass. And, just as with the carbon steel, it is up to yourdiscretion to add as much or as little as you feel is necessary. This is the most painstaking step because you don t want toget brass on any other areas of the model. Accordingly, I ve kept the process as simple as possible.

Step 1 Basecoat the areas to be painted brass with Rhulic Gold. Since I m matching the studio scheme, this will be allthe gears and pistons, a few of the arm and leg segments, and the shoulder details on the Cipher.

Step 2) Mix a wash with 50 50Brown Ink and Thornwood Greenwith a few drops of Armor Washto darken it, then thin the mix witha little water and mixing medium.Paint the mix onto all the brass areasto shade them.

As with the Armor Wash earlier, don t let this pool on surfacesor completely fill in any of therecessed details.

Step 3) When the wash dries, usea Formula P3 Small Flat Brush todrybrush highlights onto the raisedareas with Solid Gold and'a touch ofRadiant Platinum. Don t worry aboutthe deeper areas where the brushwon t fit.

P INTING THE VOLT IC GLOWThe models are nearly complete All that remains is the blue light emanating from within the mechanikal constructs.

Step 1 Thin Morrow White with afew drops of water and paint it intothe glowing areas. The thinness ofthe paint will allow t to flow intothe recesses.

Step 2) Make a wash using Arcane Blue with a little water and mixingmedium. Paint this over the white and on some of the metal around theglowing components.

Step 3) If a single coat of the wash o e s n ~ prope:tlyshade the white (if too much white shows .througpor if the blue en ds up being more opaque .than youwanted), adjust the glow by adding another layer ofwash or by adding highlights. The coils, for example, will benefit from thin highlight lines using a mix ofArcane Blue and Morrow White and a final highlightof straight Morrow White. This is an organic process, and you may need to shade some areas more and addbrighter highlights to others.

If the glow obscures too much of the surrounding metal,dryb1ush a little Cold Steel and Quick Silver around theframe. By pulling the side of your brush across the area, you can keep the hairs from falling into the recesses andkeep the silver on the raised surfaces. This is particularlyeffective on the Mitigator's vents and the Convergencefaction symbol on the Cipher s torso.

P INTING THE B SES ND WE THERING

Step 1 To paint the sand, firstbasecoat it with Gun Corps Brown.

Step 2 Use the brown wash youcreated earlier for the brass and paintit over the sand .

While washing the sand, apply someto the feet and legs of the vectors togive them a muddy appearance.

Step 3 When the wash has dried, drybrush the sandwith Gun Corps Brown. Don t worry if some of thecolor gets on the legs; it will enhance the weatheringeffect, making the models look as though they ve beentromping across the muddy battlefield.

Step 4 Drybrush the sand with Menoth White Base, keeping this last highlight clear of the model s legs.

FINISHING THE MODELSAll that remains are the final details To finish the models, paint the rims of the bases with Thamar Black and add somestatic grass. Then carefully remove the parts from their painting stands and super glue the miniatures together. Nowthey're ready for the battlefieldf you stick with this method as you add to your force, you can complete whole groups of models as you get them,

avoiding every hobbyist's dilemma: the dreaded backlog of unpainted miniatures.

IRON MOTH RDIRE TRIX.The documents you provided regarding therecent attack on a Cygnaran supply tram by thebeing known as Iron Mother Directrix providedme with a meager if workable starting point tofurther research this enigmatic creature andthe organization to which she may belong. Theabbreviated report on the incident itself provedsomewhat more useful than the transcribedinterrogation of the Cyrissist priest you capturedafter the attack.Since your instructions were simply find out allyou can, I've taken information from the incidentreport on the attack in western Cygnar andextrapolated from there. My initial investigationsled me to two conclusions, which I believe are thecrux of the information you wish to acquire.First and foremost, it is clear the Iron Motherrepresents a new and credible threat. Thetechnology she employed suggests militaryequipment comparable to that fielded byarmies of the sovereign kingdoms. This impliesastounding technological sophistication, accessto considerable manufacturing, as well as toresources and an organization of considerablescope. Of course we have no proper gaugeof the actual scale of this group nor the sizeof its forces, but even if their armed mightis relatively small, it suggests considerablesophistication. Also, the warjacks ifthey cantruly be called that controlled by the IronMother demonstrated machinery apparentlyquite different f rom the steam-powered 'jackswhich are sti ]J the mamstay throughout the IronKingdoms.Second, it is clear those who committed this attackwere connected to the worship of the goddessCyriss, whose cult is both widespread and secretive. Her symbol was omnipresent on the machinesinvolved in the attack, and the priest you capturedwas an avowed Cyrissist. My research then focused

not on i he Iron Mother is connected to that faith, but to what degree.n the dossier that follows, I will provide evidenceto support the conclusions above. However, I must

warn you, my research into this Iron Mother hasleft me with many unanswered questions.GK

The most logical place to start my investigationwas the incident that prompted you seeking myservices in the first place. Since you were unableto provide me with more than a name and adescription of the _subject and her forces, I beganlooking for attacks of a similar nature. In officialmilitary records there at first appeared to belittle of direct bearing, only a number of rumors, hearsay, and poorly documented anecdotes withtoo little substance to merit investigation.I eventually unearthed a letter sE:mt by aSearforge Commission senior trader to hissuperior regarding the loss of a shipment ofhigh-grade steel en route from Rhul to Ord,intended for a steamjac k foundry in Merin. Thisdocument was difficult to procure because theSearforge obviously did not want the incidentit details to be public knowledge, because theywere attempting to bypass Khadoran tariffson shipments of refined steel. Therefore, theshipment was mislabeled as scrap metal. Suchunderhanded techniques are commonplace, andRhulic merchants can generally get such goodsintact to Ord with a few well-placed bribes. The shipment had a small escort of Searforgesoldiers and a pair ofwarjacks, which wasinsufficient to turn aside the enemy that fellupon them-one quite similar to our subject.-GK

~ a t e : Casteus/Uldern 11th, 607 ARTo: Trade I l:aster Ecken RothrockFrom: Senior Trader Thorne CaldishYou are no doubt aware of the shipment lostin t ransi t to_ he Ordic capital. The officialstance of the Searforge Commission is that theKhadoran government confiscated the steelbecause we attempted to bypass their tar iffs onthese goods. This is not the case.I was there. I saw what happened, and i t was notwhat went into the official report. There wasno confiscation, there was outright.theft, and not by the Khadorans. Our wagons were setupon just south of I l:idfast by something I havenever seen before, a force of steel automatonswarjacks possibly, but l ike none I m familiarwith-commanded by a giant silver construct inthe shape of a woman. The metal woman commanded us to leave ourwagons and flee into the nearby forest. Ofcourse, we were not about to give up our goods, and the gun corpsmen opened fire on her, commanding their two Grundback Blastersto do the same. t was a mistake. She and herautomatons reacted swiftly and decisively to theattack, firing strange metal projectiles at thegun corps and the warjacks or tearing into themwith spring-loaded spikes and spinning blades. The machines had no smoke stacks that I couldsee, and damned i f I know how they were powered. The gun corps and warjacks were cut to pieces inseconds, and the rest of us fled into the forest.\Ve returned hours later to find the wagonsoverturned and the steel gone.-ThorneThere are similarities between the attackdescribed above and that perpetrated onthe Cygnaran supply train. Both includedresources slated for warjack production andwould be useful to any group with a need. .forsimilar manufacture. Her warjacks imply a level of mechanikalskill similar to or perhaps in some ways evensurpassing that of the kingdoms militaries. Inaddition, in both the attack on the Cygnaransupply train and the attack above, she wasaccompanied by multiple warjacks, some identicalto each other. In other words, these warjacksseem more like standardized, purpose-builtmilitary-grade warjack chassis. f his is the case,we are dealing with an individual or possibly agroup with access to sophisticated manufacturingcapabilities, which would, of course, require greatresources and coordination.-GK

So far, I have.presented two cases of the IronMother attacking military convoys carryingvaluable resources. Although I could find nofurther evidence of attacks of this specificnature, I did discover a reference to what mightbe the same individual involved in an attack onthe mysterious blackclads. The following document is a transcript of areport from a Khadoran manhunter and detailsa battle he witnessed between blackcladsand a group of mysterious spider machinesand metal men led by a metal woman. Hisdescriptions are crude but intriguing .-GKDate Khadoven 7th, 608 ARTo Kapitan Luka PetruFrom Vikta Lovot, i r regularThree nights ago I was in the northernGallowswood, ten miles from Volningrad, and Isaw something you should know about. l ~ y ordersare to keep an eye on the blackclads in the area, and I had been tracking a group of them andsome of their beasts. They led me into the deepwoods, to one of their sacred places, a clearingwith t l l st'anding stones. The clearing wasn'tempty when the blackclads arrived; there wasa group of metal men and strange machinesunlike any I have seen before. They were big l ikewarjacks but.made a different sort of racket andproduced no smoke or steam. All seemed to befollowing the instruction of a huge metal womanwearing a cloak of knives. The blackclads were not pleased to findintruders in their sacred area, and theyattacked. I watched the battle from the t rees.

Blackclads have powerful magic, and theirwolf-beasts are big and strong enough to tearapart a Juggernaut. Here they were outmatched. There were four spider warjacks, and they firedcannons from their heads and attacked withhuge steel spikes mounted on their arms. Theblackclads' two wolf-beasts w.ere kil led quickly, leaving the druids and ten or so spear-wieldingwarriors to continue the battle. The metal womanordered her metal men forward. Each was armedwith a stout steel club and a large shield. Asthey advanced on the spearmen, their shieldsmoved and mechanically locked together. Themetal woman attacked the blackclads, and I sawher use magic against them, bolts of blue energythat burned men and beasts. '.vhen one of theblackclads tried to attack her with his axe, theblades on her cloak moved and cut him to pieces. The battle ended swiftly, and l l the blackcladswere killed. Some of the warriors fled, and themetal woman le t them go. I watched her after thebattle, and she was very interested in the druidstones. After looking at them for a long time, she had her warjacks begin to demolish them. After that, I feared I would be spotted, and left .-Vik taThe most intriguing aspect of Vikta's report isthe Iron Mother's interest in the blackclads'menhirs and the site at which they stood. Thefact that she removed them means something, and I can only guess at her aims here. Thislocation is of no strategic value, but perhapsthere were occult reasons for her interest.Further research indicates this attack on theblackclads may not have been an isolated event.I found a few scattered reports of sites known tobe sacred to the blackclads defiled in a mannerconsistent with what is described above, both in

the wilds and also in remote townships. I haveattached these reports separately but they aresparse in details, as you will see. Nonetheless, some describe w arjacks and automatons at leastpotentially similar to those used by the IronMother. In all cases save the one reported bythe manhunter, the witnesses are unreliable, and there is no verifiable account or officialrecord. However, this suggests more attacksmight have occurred in remote locations andgone unrecorded. While these attacks may have been carriedout by warjacks similar to those used by theIron Mother, there were no other referencesto her that I could uncover in even the mostscattered report. This begs the question ofhow many warcasters this group has at theirdisposal. Given the similarities in machinery, Ithink it s safe to rule out the notion that thesemight have been entirely disconnected Cyrissworshiping groups.-GK

With the information I have compiled, Ibelieve it is logical to assume the Iron Motheris connected to a reasonably large and well-organized Cyriss-worshiping organization withunknown but potentially expansive goals andinfluence. What is uncertain is whether themore public face of the goddess, the variousaccepted cults operating in numerous cities, arecomplicit with the Iron Mother and the groupwith which she is ,connected. Therefore, I expended considerable energy andresources in orchestrating an interrogation ofan open Cyrissist priest in Volningrad, the citynearest the incident in the previous report. I didnot have any reason to suspect he is involved witha larger group, but he seemed the sort who mightknow more than he would willingly divulge. The priest in question, Mikael Chevesk, i s amember of the Khadoran Mechanik s Assembly,or at least he was. Worship of Cyriss is commonamong the brotherhood of the Assembly, and theHigh Kommand is tolerant of the religion. Theyare not, however, tolerant of mechaniks whosteal government property. I was able to unearthdoctored paperwork proving that Mikael hadbeen slowly thieving small, intricate parts usefulin the manufacture of warjacks for at least adecade and funneling them to various Cyrisscults throughout Khador. After a few quiet words to the right people,Mikael s illicit activities were revealed to theauthorities and he was arrested. When Mikael wasquestioned, I made sure the interrogating officerwould make reference to the report submitted by
