Mother and Child
At Warmun, the school community has been
reminded that in May we celebrate
MOTHERS.
Their school name Ngalangangpum means
“Mother and child”. So, we give praise and
thanks for Mary (Gooral for Jesus) and our
own Gooral (Ganggayi, Gawayi …)
warmun aboriginal community
At St Mary’s College we ask for God’s Bless-
ing on all the mothers and carers within the
College community.
We thank the Parents & Friends Association
too for its commitment to recognising
Mother’s Day and commissioning soaps
from Hidden Valley to become Mother’s
Day gifts.
Of course the great gift for
All mothers and carers, is to have good
children.
Do your best to be that gift whether that
means helping at home, doing your best at
school or being deadly in your behaviour
whether playing sport or just enjoying the
day.
We can give praise and thanks for our moth-
ers and carers,
Just as the Warmun
Community does in honouring ‘Mother and
Child’.
YEAR 12 BALL
Yr 12 Ball The Year Twelve Ball this week is a
reminder that the senior students will soon
be sharing a memorable occasion and cre-
ating their own memories. Ms Rebecca
Famlonga has been planning this in con-
junction with a very active committee. Max,
Dakota and Minmae have combined with
others such as Ms Hyett, Mrs Little, Mrs Cap-
salis, Mr Lake, Mr Samuel and our wonderful
‘front of house’ staff Ms Libby, Ms Katie and
Ms Robyn, to ensure that ticket sales, all the
preparations such as the theme and the in-
vitations are organised and that learning the
dance steps has been fun.
The College thanks both these generous
people and the families for supporting this
event.
May the teaching and learning over the
next weeks of Term be engaging and pro-
ductive.

NAPLAN
This week all Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students sat their NAPLAN tests. I would like to congratulate our
students for how seriously they took these tests and how well behaved they were during these
tests.
School Photographs
All students this week should have received envelopes for ordering their school photos. These
photographs are to be taken on Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd May. If families wish to have fami-
ly photos taken, can you please notify homeroom teachers, via a note of which students need to
I would like to remind students that if they wish to be in school photos they need to be in com-
plete school uniform.
Student Services is moving
As of Monday, student services will no longer be at the Guy St entrance. If students are being
driven to, and picked up from, school on time they should still enter and leave from the Guy St
entrance. However, if they are late or are leaving early they need to enter or leave via student
services which will now be at main reception. The Guy St entrance, both gate and door, will be
locked at 7:45am and re-opened at 2:15pm. Miss Robyn will still be the student services officer,
she will just be joining Miss Katie, and Miss Libby. Students will now be signed in and out from main
reception, all notes and enquiries will also be dealt with at the new student services desk at the
main reception area. Sick bay is also moving to main reception. We feel by having more people
at reception/student services we will be able to provide a more efficient service to both students
and parents.
Uniforms
We would like to ask for parent support in sending you children to school in the correct uniform.
Shoes are to be all black, hair is to be tied up, students may only have up to two piercings in
each ear with small studs or sleepers. Hats must now be college hats. Jumpers need to be
school jackets or plain navy blue or black cardigans or jumpers. No hoods. Recently there have
been several students, particularly senior students, wearing nose piercings. Nose piercings are not
allowed at St Mary’s College and any student wearing a nose piercing will be asked to remove it.
As you may know already from an earlier Newsletter, Sr Mary Roarty ibvm died in Sydney on the 15th April in her
ninetieth year. Sister Mary came to Broome with another Loreto nun, Sr Francine Roberts in 1981, (seen in the centre
pic together) beginning a long and happy association with the Kimberley. Deceptively frail in appearance, Sr Mary
was fondly referred to as ‘Sr Bones’. She had a great strength of will that saw her work very effectively at St Mary’s
initially and then returning in 1990 to support the Djarindjin / Lombadina school and community. In between those two
appointments she had been based at Loreto Coorparoo in Brisbane, with its links to the Darwin community, and Sr
Mary spent that time in writing a religious education programme for Aboriginal children. In 1990 she was appointed to
the Aboriginal Spirituality Centre at Warmun and also shared her gifts with the Kalumburu community, returning there
in 2002 after four years based at Three Springs in the northern wheat belt within the diocese of Geraldton.
May She Rest In Peace.

Year 11 and 12 Exams
Year 11 and 12 Exams will take place during week 6, from May 29 until June 2. During exam
week all Year 11 and 12 students will only need to come to school if they have an exam on, un-
less you have outstanding work in practical Cert or General subjects that need completing.
You must liaise with your teachers to organise when you can come in and finish work if you have
outstanding work.
Below is a draft timetable of the examinations so that you know which order they are in and ap-
proximately when you need to be there. A full timetable will be distributed to all senior students
next week. Please contact Miss Lea if there are any timetable clashes. When you come into school, whether you have an exam, are finishing work or asking for help you are expected to
wear full school uniform.
The 2017 Primary House Cross Country Carnival was held on Monday May 8th at St. Mary’s
College Primary Campus. Due to building works at the rear of the Primary Campus, the usual
track that is used for our Cross Country Carnivals was unavailable. The altered course took the
students from the oval, through the middle of the Music Room and the Year 6 rooms, and then
around the Holy Place and through the front part of the school. The students had been prac-
tising this track from the start of the term in their Physical Education classes and were ready for
the new challenge. The whole school came out in the morning to cheer on our Kindy students
as they took on the course for the very first time – there were a lot of cameras clicking and I’m
sure a few proud tears were shed! Our Year 6 leaders really stepped up on the day, and most of
them ran with the Kindy and Pre-Primary students, encouraging and supporting them along the
way. The year 6 students also helped with the setup of the carnival, putting on zinc stripes and
handing out ribbons and medals. A big thank you to all of the staff who helped with the set up
and running of the event and to all of the parents and friends who came along to cheer the
students on. We had a great turn out this year and it was brilliant to see all of the students so
proud to be doing their best in front of such a big crowd. All of the students should be very
proud of what they achieved on the day.
The points for the shield were extremely close this year, with Barbier taking the lead early in the
day and managing to just hold off Ward to win the coveted shield. Congratulations must go to
Barbier and to all of the individual medal winners listed below.

NET Retreat
Last week our Year 7 – 11 students participated in their annual retreat program delivered by the
National Evangelisation Team (NET). The NET team draws members from across Australian and
around the world who volunteer their time to deliver faith based retreats for students in Austral-
ia. The students participated in a range of personal and group activities to explore and devel-
op the place of faith in their lives. Our sincere thanks to members of the NET, Joshua, Darcy,
Ezekiel, Lydia, Casey, Tom, Wren, Maddy, Robin, Jessica and Deanna. Thank you to the host
families who billeted NET members and to Kevin and Jo Bell for their great support of the pro-
gram. We wish our NET members safe travels as they head south to many other Catholic Sec-
ondary Colleges throughout WA.
THE MONTH OF MARY
The month of May is the "month which the members of the faithful has especially dedicated to
Our Blessed Lady," and it is the occasion for a "moving tribute of faith and love which Catholics
in every part of the world
[pay] to the Queen of
Heaven". (Paul VI: Encycli-
cal on the Month of May,
no. 1). May is also the
month in which the Virgin
Mary appeared to three
shepherd children at Fati-
ma and this Saturday May
13 will commemorate 100
years since these appari-
tions. In order to teach stu-
dents about these events,
Brother Peter he generous-
ly given up his time to
speak to students in their
Religion classes about his
visit to Fatima. We thank
Brother Peter for coming in
and sharing his experience
with our students.
Steve Bastoni
Workshop On Friday after-
noon, May 5th, Aus-
tralian actor Steve
Bastoni visited St.
Mary’s College to
speak with our Dra-
ma students about
acting and film
making. Steve
spoke to us about
his acting experi-
ences, approach-
es to rehearsal and
character and the difference between
theatre and film. He also got a few of us up to do practical activities alongside him! Film maker
Shayne Thompson also spoke to us about all of the different ways to make short films and en-
couraged us to enter a short film into the Mud and Salt Water Festival. We had a great afternoon
getting to know Steve and Shayne!
Japanese Children's Day
To celebrate our links with Japan, Kodomo no Hi, Children’s Day in Japan, was also observed at
the College on Friday the 5th of May.
The koinobori banners in the shape of a carp, brought back to Broome by the staff on the recent
Taiji Exchange, were flown from the primary and secondary flagpoles.
In Japanese folklore, the carp is a symbol of determination, vigor and resilience, overcoming all
obstacles to swim upstream. Samurai warrior figurines and samurai kabuto helmets are also tradi-
tionally displayed in homes to inspire strength and bravery. Students fold origami samurai hats
from newspaper to wear on the day.
Children also use the day to thank and show respect for the teachers, parents, and relatives who
care for them.
Various activities were undertaken to celebrate the day including colouring in and mak-
ing koinobori, folding samurai hats and playing traditional Japanese games.
Small Japanese gifts sent to the College by the Japanese Consul, following his visit in April, were
also distributed as prizes on the
day.

It occurs when the bowel is infected by a virus or bacteria. Symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps and sometimes, fever. Most cases in children are not serious, but it is very important to make sure that a child with gastro receives enough fluid. If your child has gastro, keep them away from school for 48 hours after vomiting and diarrhoea have stopped. If symptoms persist see your fami-ly doctor. The easiest way to prevent gastro is to make sure everyone in the family washes their hands regu-larly, especially before eating and after going to the toilet. For more information go to http://www.public.health.wa.gov.au/2/597/2/gastroenteritis.pm
