Project OverviewAlberta Transportation has started planning for the construction of the SW portion of the road that will complete the Calgary Ring Road. The completion of the Calgary Ring Road requires the relocation of several utilities that are directly impacted by the road construction. The Province is working collaboratively with the impacted utility companies to help facilitate their planning and design.

In the preliminary phase of the road design, ENMAX No. 30 Substation located at 11111 – 37 Street SW on Tsuu T’ina land, was identified as being situated on the alignment of the Ring Road. Alberta Transportation has requested ENMAX to relocate the substation, its transmission lines and distribution feeders away from the road alignment.

For service continuity purposes, ENMAX is proposing to build a new substation (No. 35) while the existing one is still in service. The new substation will have the same capacity as the existing one. Once construction of No. 35 Substation is complete, No. 30 Substation will be decommissioned and salvaged.

What is a Substation?

Substations are important components of the electrical infrastructure required to keep reliable electricity available for customers. Substations consist of high voltage electrical equipment like transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers and associated devices.

Project DetailsThe No. 35 Substation Project involves construction of a new substation located at the end of 90 Avenue SW in the southwest corner of Glenmore Park with the following components:

• high and medium voltage gas insulated switchgear

• protection systems all contained within a building

• provisions to accommodate four transformers, but will be equipped with only two 30 MVA 138 / 13.8 kV transformers at this stage to feed the existing load.

Changes will also be made to existing 138-30.81L and 138-6.80L transmission lines to feed the new substation. These transmission lines will also be relocated at a later stage to allow construction of the road.

Transmission line

To move our electricity from power generating facilities to local areas, ENMAX Power relies on a system of high-voltage power lines across Alberta, including our own 288 kilometre transmission network within the City of Calgary. These transmission lines enter a substation where a transformer reduces voltage to a level that can be safely delivered to customers.

Electric and Magnetic Fields (EMF)ENMAX Power understands some individuals may have concerns regarding electric and magnetic fields (EMF). Scientific evidence to date has not established adverse health effects resulting from exposure to power frequency EMF at levels normally encountered in homes, schools and offices. However, we continue to monitor this issue through our work with the Canadian Electrical Association’s task group, and recognize no single study will resolve this issue. Information and in-home measurements are available to our customers so they can make their own informed decisions regarding this issue.

Electric and magnetic fields are invisible lines of force surrounding any wire or device that uses electricity. They are created whenever electricity flows through a wire (eg. overhead power lines, electric appliances, or electrical cords or wiring) because these fields are found wherever there is electricity.

Proposed ScheduleENMAX Power plans to file the Facility Application (FA) with the AUC in late January 2015. Subject to approvals being granted, ENMAX Power expects construction to begin in March 2016 with a proposed in-service date of March 2018.
