Buildings & Grounds Latest

The children have really enjoyed their first lessons in our new gymnasium. We are making some alterations to the way the children enter and leave the building, and will be installing keyed locks on the rear doors facing the oval so that students cannot enter or exit the gym via these doors. We will also be upgrading the locks on the external doors of the student toilets to enable them to be locked from the inside. A number of parents have asked me why the basketball court is allegedly “two metres shorter than regulation size”. Despite assurances from the architects and builders that it was accurately marked, we remeasured it ourselves and discovered that, when measured from the outside of the painted lines, the court was 18 millimetres too long! This is well within the regulation tolerance limits. If you would like to take your own measurements, please make a time with Peter to access the gym.

School Council Next Tuesday

Our first meeting for 2019 takes place at 6.30pm on Tuesday. Issues to be discussed include

(a) our draft School Vision and Value

statement. Education Committee has recommended as our Vision Statement To empower a community of inclusive

curious learners who inspire each other

(b) our draft Annual Implementation Plan for 2019

(c) the draft design for our oval upgrade Please notify Peter Martin by Monday afternoon if you wish to attend the meeting.

Parking and Road Safety

Please observe the 40km/hr speed limit in Graham St at pick-up and drop-off times, as well as the 40km speed limit in Poolman St at the rear of the school.

Page 2: nnnn PPPPoooorrrttt …...Please notify Peter Martin by Monday afternoon if you wish to attend the meeting. Parking and Road Safety Please observe the 40km/hr speed limit in Graham

If you can, ride or walk to school. If you need to drive, try to park a short distance away from the school and walk. There are often parking spaces around the corner from Poolman/Clark St by Garden City Reserve. Please be courteous to our surrounding neighbours when parking, dropping off or collecting students from school. Remember: it is ILLEGAL to park across driveways or on nature strips.

Two Minute Zone – ‘Kiss N Go ’

The ‘Kiss N Go’ zone on Clark Street is where parents can quickly drop and collect their children - WITHIN A TWO MINUTE TIME FRAME. This is NOT a parking area - you are NOT allowed to park (or Double Park) and wait or leave your car. If you need to walk your child in or spend more time at school, you must park in one of the surrounding streets, in a legal parking area (and not over driveways). The times of operation for the two minute parking bays (as reflected by the signage) are 8.30am-9.15am and 3.00pm-4.00pm on school days. The City of Port Phillip Council By-laws Officers visit our school on a regular basis and issue fines to those who do not comply with these regulations. We also encourage all families to contact City of Port Phillip Council if you have a traffic complaint on 03 9209 6777.

Do not leave young children alone in a parked car, even for a minute as this is both dangerous and illegal.

After Care Attendance

Please ensure that you notify Camp Australia if you are collecting your child from school and he/she will not be attending After Care. When children go “missing” between the end of the school day and attending AfterCare, we are required to notify the police and you may be billed for any police time that is wasted. Voluntary Contributions

I wrote to all families in December requesting that they contribute either $445 (one child), $695 (two children) or $895 (family) to the school in order to support our curriculum programs. It is very difficult for the school to provide your

children with all necessary educational resources without your financial assistance. Your contribution ensures we can continue to provide the excellent programs we all expect for our kids.

School Photos

Our school photos will be taken on Monday February 25. All students should be at school punctually in school uniform that day. If your child is a little “off colour”, you may wish to bring him/her along just for the photographs. Class teachers can advise you of the approximate time for your class photo. Excursion Procedures

This year there will be a number of excursions and incursions planned for each year level throughout the school. As teachers spend a lot of time organising these activities, we will be strictly enforcing the return dates for permission and payments which are done on Compass. The cut-off dates will be 2 full school days PRIOR to the excursion/incursion to enable effective organisation. We strongly encourage all parents to adhere to these dates as your child will miss out on the activity if you return the permission note after the cut-off date. Compass reminders will be sent in the weeks leading up to the activity to remind you. Students Late to School

A punctual start to the school day allows the teacher and students to make the most of the learning day. Whilst 10 – 15 minutes may not seem much, a student who is late each day will miss between 34 and 51 hours of instruction time in one year. Parents are strongly urged to make all efforts to ensure their child/children are at school ready for the start of class at 9:00 a.m. Riding to School

Please make sure that your child walks his/her bike across the school crossing and in the schoolyard. Only children with a school issued

“bike licence” should ride to school unaccompanied by an adult. All Year 4 and 5 students will participate in Bike Ed later this year in order to gain their bike licences. No children or adults are permitted to ride or scoot in the school grounds between 7am and 6.15pm on school days.

Student Accident Insurance Arrangements Parents/Guardians are reminded that the Department does not provide personal accident insurance for students. Parents and guardians are generally responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including any transport costs, unless the injury is caused by the negligence (carelessness) of a Department or school council employee or volunteer. Student accident insurance policies are available from the private insurance market. These cover a range of medical expenses not covered by Medicare. School Assemblies

During Term 1, assemblies will be held on Friday afternoons in front of the flagpole or in the gymnasium at 2.45pm on a cyclical basis: Feb 8 Senior School Feb 15 Junior School Feb 22 Junior School March 1 Whole School March 8 Senior School March 15 Whole School March 22 Senior School March 29 Junior School Parents are invited to attend these assemblies. In line with our school values, we ask that everyone attending assembly models respect by not chatting, particularly through announcements or during the singing of the National Anthem.

Visitors to School If a parent/guardian wishes to see a child at recess or lunchtime, he/she MUST come to the office first. All adults in the schoolyard MUST be wearing a pass issued by the office or they will be asked to leave the school by the yard duty teacher.

Information Evenings Information evening will be held next week(Years 3-6 on Monday Feb 11th and for Years 1&2 on Tuesday Feb 12th). Each session will start at 6pm either in the Gym or in one of the classrooms with a fifteen minute presentation. Parents will then move to their child’s classroom where the class teachers will provide more details of their class program. The sessions should conclude by about 7pm. Our Prep families are invited to a Family Picnic from 5.30pm on Wednesday Feb 13th.

Team Vic teams, to attend the School Sport Australia Championships in the sports of Netball, Boys and Girls Football (Soccer), Boys and Girls Australian Rules and Boys and Girls Basketball for 2019 teams. Registrations close on March 1 2019. Eligibility is for students born in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Each school is allowed a maximum of three (3) students for each sport mentioned above to attend these trials so it is important that as a school, we acknowledge the capacity and ability of these nominated students to be able to participate well in these trials. It needs to be emphasised that these trials form part of School Sport Victoria’s Gifted and Talented program and are not ‘come and try’ opportunities. Each child is trialling for a state team and we must attest to each child’s athleticism, skill level and school behaviour. Students must be nominated and endorsed by their school initially before registering online. Students who wish to nominate for a trial please email Mr. Stephen at [email protected] by Monday, February 11, 2019. If required, there will be trials in Term1 next year to determine the best applicants. The nominations close March 1, 2019.

Swimming Trials

The school will conduct swimming time trials in the outdoor pool lanes 8 & 9 at MSAC on Monday February 11 and Monday February 18 from 7:30am until 8:30am for students wishing to represent the school at the Southport District Swimming Carnival on February 27 2019. Students must be able swim fifty metres in their preferred stroke(s) in order to trial. Admission to MSAC is free for participating students and their parents courtesy of the PFA. Students currently in Year levels Five and Six will trial on Monday February 11. Students currently in Year levels Three and Four will trial on Monday February 18. Permission forms have been posted on Compass or are available from our PE teachers

No Hat, No Play

We are a SunSmart school and children not wearing an approved hat will be required to remain in a designated shaded area at recess, lunchtime and during outdoor class activities until April 30 and again after September 1.

Weekly Staff Profiles

This week we profile our Prep AB teachers, Emily Fenn and Peter Fleming.

Emily, our Prep Team leader, is originally from the UK and, after two years back in Yorkshire, returned in 2017 to Melbourne and to Port Melbourne Primary where she previously worked in Prep. She had taught for several years in Australia and in the UK specialising in Early Years provision and was delighted to return to Port Melbourne Primary after taking a career break to travel around Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Outside school Emily enjoys playing hockey for Brunswick, going to the cinema and exploring the city. In the holidays she also enjoys travelling, hitting the slopes and hiking. Emily and her husband really love living in Melbourne, although she misses their dog Poppy, who is much happier in the UK countryside.

Peter began his teaching career in the Northern Territory on an aboriginal community. He spent four very interesting years on a small community on Groote Eylandt in the Gulf of Carpentaria. On leaving the community his next position was in Darwin where he taught in a number of schools in a variety of positions including three years as a physical education teacher. During his time in Darwin he was fortunate to be able to indulge a passion for travel in both Asia and Europe. After fifteen

years in the Territory it was time to return to Melbourne. On his return he pursued his interest in teaching physical education at Spensley Street Primary School and worked as a Casual Relief Teacher (CRT). It was during this time he completed a Graduate Diploma in Health Promotion. Keen to return to teaching full time he accepted a position at Eumemmerring Primary School where he taught for just over seven years before transferring to Port Melbourne Primary School in 2012.

Student Engagement & WellStudent Engagement & WellStudent Engagement & WellStudent Engagement & Well----being being being being

This year, after consultation with staff and students, we are continuing to implement the consistent approach to Student Well-being introduced last year. We are focused on improving student engagement with their learning and in their peer relations in the yard, and have an emphasis on self-reflection and personal growth. I have attached a summary of our procedures at the back of this newsletter. Jessica McPherson

Coffee Van Returns

The coffee van was back this week and will continue to come through this term on a Wednesday. We will also be having our welcome to the year, PFA coffee morning for those interested in the PFA, finding out what it is we do and finding out how you can get involved. The date for our coffee morning will confirmed ASAP.

Fun Food Days at School

We are looking for someone to put their hand up to organise the fun food days each term. There will be a team of people that will support you and I am always available to answer questions and assist. Please consider joining the committee, and potentially running a fun food day. It is an easy role, a great way to meet new people at the school, is enjoyed by all the kids and a fundraiser as well.

Icypole Days

Fingers crossed our icypole days will coincide with the hottest days in the term. The grade 6 kids will be running this day again as it raises funds for their graduation night at the end of the year. This is a great opportunity for them to connect with kids through all year levels.

AGM

We are hoping it to hold our AGM at the beginning of March. All roles within the PFA will be voted on. Role descriptions will be made available soon. If anyone has any questions, feedback or wants to find out how they can get involved please do not hesitate to contact me on my number below. Bre McGrath: 0411 228 921
