A Person who says that “O” is the last

letter in ZERO, Instead of the first

letter in OPPORTUNITY

Know your material. Pick a topic you are interested in. Know more about it than you include in your

speech.

Use personal stories and conversational language – that way you won’t easily forget what to say.

Practice. Practice. Practice! Rehearse out loud with all equipment you plan on using. Revise as neces-

sary.

Know the audience. Greet some of the audience members as they arrive. It’s easier to speak to a group

of friends than to strangers.

Know the room. Arrive early, walk around the speaking area and practice using the microphone and

any visual aids.

Relax. Ease tension by doing exercises. Transform nervous energy into enthusiasm.

Visualize yourself giving your speech. Imagine yourself speaking, your voice loud, clear and confident.

Visualize

the audience clapping – it will boost your confidence.

Realize that people want you to succeed. Audiences want you to be interesting, stimulating, informa-

tive and entertaining. They don’t want you to fail.

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL SPEAKING

Page 3: Nmc community times issue 01 year2009

A Flood was threatening a small town and everyone was leaving for safe ground except for one man who said “God will save me. I have faith”

As the water level rose a jeep came to rescue him, the man refused saying “God will save me. I have faith”. As the water rose further, he went up

to the second story of his house, and boat came to help him. Again he refused to go saying “God will save me. I have faith”. The water kept rising

and the man climbed on to the roof. A helicopter came to rescue him, but he said, “God will save me. I have faith”. Well finally he drowned. When

he reached his maker he angrily questioned. “I had complete faith in you. Why did you ignore my prayers and let me down?” The Lord replied.

“Who do you think sent you the jeep, the boat and the helicopter?”

The only way to overcome a fatalistic attitude is to accept responsibility and believe in the law of cause and effect rather than luck. It takes ac-

tion, preparation and planning rather than waiting, wondering and wishing to accomplish any goals in life.

Comparing the above in toastmasters I would like to put it in this form:

Most people join this fantastic friendly learning environment- this organization for mainly two reasons

For our enhancement in some areas like communication or leadership

For having a change in the routine life which we lead – Home to office to home again.

Each toastmasters meeting takes you one step away from drowning, any role you take – SAA, Timer, Word master, Table topic master, Greet

master, Toastmaster of the evening, Projects, Evaluation, Quiz master, Mentoring. Even as an officer of the club is a help/blessing in disguise. In

fact by only attending the meeting and not doing any of the above roles will also give some enlightenment.

LUCK FAVOURS THOSE WHO HELP THEMSELEVES.

Be successful and feel lucky help yourself.

A Junior Manager, a Senior Manager and their Boss are on their way to a

meeting.

On their way through a park, they come across a wonder lamp. They rub the

lamp and a Genie appears.

The Genie says, "Normally, one is granted three wishes but as you are three,

I will allow one wish each"

So the eager Senior Manager shouted, "I want the first wish. I want to be in

the Bahamas , on a fast boat and have no worries."

Pufffff. and he was gone.

Now the Junior Manager could not keep quiet and shouted "I want to be In

Florida with beautiful girls, plenty of food and cocktails." Pufffff. and he was

also gone.

The Boss calmly said,

"I want these two idiots back in the office after lunch at 1.00 pm."

MORAL OF THE STORY IS:

"ALWAYS ALLOW THE BOSS TO SPEAK FIRST"
