New Students:3 Steps to Enrollment...

ADMISSIONS (231) 995-1054 New and Transfer StudentsNew and transfer students must be formally admitted to NMC prior to registration. Completing the admissions process includes submitting an application (available online at www.nmc.edu/admissions or at the Admissions Office, Tanis Building), paying the one-time, non-refundable $20 application fee, and submitting official copies of all required transcripts. Applications may also be mailed, delivered to the Admissions Office or faxed to (231) 995-1339. For online applications you must pay by credit card. Students on guest status must check with the Admissions Office before register-ing for classes each semester.

Dual-Enrollment Students NMC provides an opportunity for high school students to dual enroll in NMC courses. Dual enrollment requires students to demonstrate college level skills as determined by either ACT scores or COMPASS placement test scores. Following pre-admission testing, high school students meet with their high school counselor or home school representa-tive to review eligibility, select appropriate courses, and fill out the NMC Dual-Enrollment Application. High schools, depending upon MEAP scores and other considerations, may pay a portion of the tuition costs. Students are advised to see their high school counselors for details.

Dual-Enrollment is on a semester-by-semester basis. A new Dual-Enrollment application must be submitted each semes- ter of attendance at NMC as a high school student. Upon graduation from high school, students must submit a “regu-lar” NMC application and an official high school transcript.

• COMPASS Placement Test information: (231) 995-2134

• Request Dual-Enrollment application: (231) 995-1054 or see your high school counselor.

• ACT test scores: Send to NMC Admissions Office. Call (231) 995-1054 to ensure receipt of scores.

Welcome Center (231) 995-1135Information, directions, materials and campus tours are all available through NMC’s Welcome Center. Located in thelobby of Health and Science.

Residency (231) 995-1049Your tuition rate is determined by your residency during the admissions process. You may be admitted as in-district, out-of-district (other Michigan counties), out-of state or inter-national. Grand Traverse County property owners and their dependents are considered in-district and pay lower tuition because they also pay county property taxes which support NMC. (Exception: Maritime classes are based on credit hours only.) To change your residency you must obtain a petition at www.nmc.edu/records or in the Records Office.

Tuition (231) 995-1085NMC charges general tuition rates for most classes. Some specialized classes are assessed differential tuition rates. Tuition and fees are established by the Board of Trustees and are subject to change. Visit www.nmc.edu/tuition for the most current rates.

Billing/Contact HoursTuition is based on contact hours with the instructor (shown in the column after “credits” in the online schedule). The tuition charge is the contact hours multiplied by your tuition rate. Fees are additional. Note: The tuition charge for Maritime classes only is based on credit hours, not contact hours.

Tuition/Fee Payment Due DatesFinal payment for Fall 2012 is due August 7, 2012.

Students are responsible for the payment of tuition and fees by 5 p.m. on the due date listed above. After the semester final payment date has passed, tuition is due at the time of registration.

Financial Aid Students All tuition and fees in excess of anticipated aid and/or third party authorizations are due by 5 p.m. on the payment due dates above or your enrollment may be cancelled.

Third Party Authorizations (TIP, MET, MI Works, etc.)Third party authorizations are due in the Cashier’s Office July 17, 2012. Payment for tuition/fees not covered by a third party is due on the payment due date. NEW STuDENT ENROLLMENT DETAILS

Billing & Collection ProceduresNMC’s billing process is electronic. Students can view bal-ances and make payments on NMC’s Self-Service under the billing menu. Periodically students are sent an eBill to their NMC email account as a reminder to go to Self-Service to pay the outstanding balance.

In case of errors or questions about your bill, please contact the Cashier’s Office at (231) 995-1085 as soon as possible. By registering for classes, you agree to financial responsibility for all charges on your student account. If you should decide not to attend, it is your responsibility to drop your classes before refund deadline or you will be held responsible for payment.Collection costs, excluding attorney and litigation costs, of up to 33% may be added to your student account and will become your responsibility. Further, you understand that dropping or non-attendance of classes may affect your financial aid status, causing a reduction of financial aid.

Financial Aid (231) 995-1035 The following information is subject to change at anytime, with- out notice, due to changes in federal, state or institutional policies.

You may be eligible for financial aid to help with your college costs. Because application procedures may take 6-8 weeks, we urge you to apply as soon as possible.

Recipients must accept their financial aid online via their NMC Self Service account or financial aid will not disburse.

NMC email is the official communication mode of the Finan-cial Aid office. Please check your NMC email and Self Service account often.

Recipients: Financial aid will be paid based on the numberof credits for which you are enrolled on the date aid is final-ized (freeze aid date). Adding courses after that date will not change your financial aid.

After charges are deducted, any financial aid balance will be mailed to your permanent address or sent EFT to your bank account approximately the sixth week of the semester. Required books and supplies may be charged at the NMC Bookstore, provided funds are available from your financial aid award after tuition and fees have been deducted for that respective semester. Bookstore financial aid charges can be made 3 weeks prior to the beginning of any semester up until the day before the census date.

Your attendance is important! Dropping or non-attendance of classes may affect your financial aid status causing an ad-justment to your aid and may also cause you to be placed on financial aid warning or aid suspension. If you totally with-

draw or stop attending all of your classes for a semester, you will be subject to the federal Title IV Return of Funds Policy. The withdrawal process begins when you submit the proper form to the Registration Office or will be calculated from the last date you attend classes.

PLACEMENT TESTING & ORIENTATION

Placement Testing (231) 995-2134Assessment of reading, writing and math skills is required of all new students.

The results of these tests will assist in student placement in a wide array of NMC courses. Applicants who have completed the ACT test with English and reading scores of 19 or higher are not required to take the reading or writing portion of the placement test. Students with ACT scores lower than 18 in math must take the Math COMPASS placement test. ACT math scores of 18 or above may allow students into some math courses without completing the math portion of the COMPASS test. For further information concerning the COMPASS placement test or to schedule a test session, go to www.nmc.edu/careers or call (231) 995-1041.

Orientation (231) 995-1118New students are required to attend an Orientation session to: • Register for classes • Assess your basic academic skills• Meet with an academic advisor or counselor• Acquaint yourself with campus

Attendance at an early Orientation session will provide you the best selection of classes. Once admitted to NMC, you will receive details regarding these sessions.

Prerequisite CheckingAutomated prerequisite checking is activated for various courses. (Example: all math courses.) To register, you will need to have already passed the prerequisite course, be enrolled in the prerequisite course (in-progress), have transferred in the direct equivalent course, or have an appropriate test score on the COMPASS placement test (for English and math courses). If the “in-progress” course is not passed (received a 0.0, W, U, I, FA, AU, IP) at the end of the semester, the student will be dropped from the pre-enrolled course(s).

Repeating a CourseIf you are repeating a course that you have previously taken at NMC, be sure to mark the “Repeat” box with an “R” on your Enrollment Form. When registering or adding on the web, complete your transactions and then contact the Records Office at (231) 995-1049 and let them know about the repeat. The online system does not have an option to indicate repeats. Most courses at NMC may be repeated a maximum of two times. For Financial Aid purposes, classes that are repeated may not be counted in total number of credits taken for the semester if the prior class can be counted toward graduation.

Auditing a CourseStudents may register to attend a class without receiving academic credit or a grade. Check the audit box on the Enrollment Form or do so when registering online. Go to www.nmc.edu/records and select “Important Dates” for the last day to change to an audit for each session. Audited classes are not eligible for Financial Aid.

Late Registration/AddNew Students also see “Admissions” on page 3.

If the course is open and the session it is in has begun, permission to register/add late is required from the Academic Area. Some Academic Areas may not allow late registration.

Online registration/adding will only occur through the day before the session begins. Once the session has begun, you must register in the Records and Registration Office.

See “Registration/Add/Drop,” page 8, for information or go to: www.nmc.edu/records and select “Important Dates” to view dates of sessions.

Students may register until October 25, 2012 for the following courses:

• Aviation Flight Courses• Independent Study and Service Learning Internships

Registration/Add/Drop PolicyYou can register/add most courses without the instructor’s signature through the day before the session begins. Excep-tions are listed below under “Late Registration/Add.” The number of weeks in a session and their start dates are noted by each course in the listing of classes that follows. Registration for more than 21 credits/semester needs advisor approval.

Drop Policy Courses may be dropped online or in the Records and Reg-istration Office. When dropping your classes you may also mail or fax (231) 995-1956, a signed letter to the Records Office. The date the letter is received is the official date of the withdrawal. Courses may be dropped without record during the add period in each session. The course will not appear on your transcript. From the end of the add period up to approx-imately the last 25% of the session is the drop with record period. You will receive a “W” grade on your transcript. The instructor’s signature is not required to drop a course.

If you officially drop/withdraw after the refund period, you are responsible for full payment of tuition and fees. Courses dropped receive the appropriate refund for the date dropped; courses added are assessed at full rate. Financial aid recipi-ents will be subject to the Federal Return of Funds Policy. Visit www.nmc.edu/financialaid or contact the Financial Aid Office for more information, (231) 995-1035.
