PASTOR’S REFLECTIONS:For past sermons, please visit the JFH Ministries kiosk after service.

In preparation for being planted as a new ministry in the Oakwood community of Chicago, Pastor and Founder, John F. Han-nah began holding Bible Study services on Thursday nights in Blackwell Memorial AME Zion church near 39th and Cottage Grove Avenue, in September 2003. By the time the first Sunday morning service was held, New Life Covenant Oakwood Church had nearly 300 members.

In March 2004, New Life Covenant Oakwood called the Charles A. Hayes Family Investment Center on 48th and Wabash “home” every Sunday morning for worship. The location ended up being very temporary, as the word was spreading about the church that did not mirror any other worship experience in the city at that time. Despite your church background, or whether you had none, the atmosphere at New Life was conducive for an encounter with God and people were hungry for Him.

With a hunger for God being the driving force for exponential growth, Pastor Hannah’s motto seemed to be, ‘when I move, you move...just like that.’ By January of 2005, New Life was worshipping at its third loca-tion, King College Preparatory High School. At King College Prep, there was an explosion. By now, people were able to see and feel the changes that were inspired by these regular God encounters and members’ family and friends would come just to see what the hype was about. And often, they never left after that first visit. So, when no more seats could be added, New Life Covenant Oakwood be-gan adding services. Still, another move was inevitable, as the auditorium was bursting at the seams in all three Sunday services and Thursday night Bible study.

While in awe of the move of God, Pastor Han-nah remained sensitive to both the voice of

God and the growing space issues. He would often say to the church, ‘this is a great prob-lem to have.’ Yet, in his private fellowship with God, he would remind Him, ‘You have a problem.’ God answered those conversations by directing Pastor Hannah to purchase prop-erty in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, and in October 2008, New Life had its first Sunday services in the 78th and Dobson location, referred to as the “Tabernacle.”

The Tabernacle represented “new life,” as it marked the end of renting venues on Sundays and Thursdays. However, the reprieve was short lived as, even with three services, the Tabernacle could not contain what could now be described as a movement. Having the new location gave some hesitant visitors a sense of stability, and more people began to join. To help facilitate the feeling of family, Pastor Hannah instituted quarterly Unity Services where all services would meet at one time in a larger location. This was necessary since not one Sunday passed since the church’s inception where someone did not come forward to make New Life their home. After much prayer, Pastor Hannah followed God’s leading and began renting a facility previously used for those Unity Services to hold two of the Sunday services each week.

Today, New Life operates out of the Taber-nacle on Thursday nights and for the early morning service on Sunday mornings before Pastor Hannah travels to the UIC Forum, near downtown Chicago, to conduct the remaining two services at that location. Simultaneously, we are knee-deep in the Temple Project, fundraising and planning for our new home church, the “Temple.” How does it all happen each week? When God moves, we move, just like that.

PRAYER & FASTINGFasting Schedule:

Week of January 6th: No Meat

Week of January 13th: No Media

Week of January 20th: Your Choice

Week of January 27th: Liquids only (2 days)

NLC defines fasting as a sacrificial form of prayer warfare that produces results available in no other way. Fasting weakens the flesh, strengthens the spirit and energizes our faith. It is important that saints develop a consistent life of fasting, coupled with prayer and studying the Word of God.

How do I fast? At New Life, Pastor Hannah carefully selects the days, times and types of fasts for our members and guests, such as refraining from sweets, meat, social media, TV, etc. We are to spend that time praying and seeking to hear from God. Why Should I fast? Believers are given the opportunity to express themselves in an undivided and intensive devotion to the Lord and to the concerns of spiritual life. This devotion is expressed by abstaining for a short while from food and drink, to enjoy a time of uninterrupted communion with God. What Scriptures talks about fasting? There are several instances fasting is discussed in the Bible and for an array of circumstances. Two direct references of fasting are: Matthew 6:16-18 and Ezra 8:21-23.

Please visit the JFH Table in the lobby to purchase your Year of Never Before gift box which includes a t-shirt/hoodie, DVD’s and CD’s of Pastor Hannah, all for $20. Purchase for yourself or a loved one today!*While supplies last
