For those arriving on a different day than Monday, September 28, our staff will not be able to meet you in person at the airport. However, getting to either Amsterdam or Utrecht is very easy by public transportation. See directions below.

The Dutch National Rail Agency (NS) has information in English (including a very useful trip planner) here:

http://www.ns.nl/en/travellers/home

You can get tickets and information (in English) at any of the ticket offices. If you have a smartphone with a data plan, I recommend downloading the ’NS Reisplanner Xtra’ app for easy trip planning and live updates of train schedules.

Hotel Information

Once the study tour begins, we will be staying at two hotels during the week: the Hotel Karel V in Utrecht and the Volkshotel in Amsterdam. Reservations are made in the name of each delegate, checking in to the Karel V on Monday, Sept 28 and checking in the Volkshotel on September 30, checking out on Saturday, October 3. If you’d like to extend your stay beyond October 3, please contact the hotels directly. You might be able to take advantage of our group rates.  Any hotel nights beyond September 28 - October 3 are not covered by your registration. Check-in time is 2 pm, so it’s possible that not all rooms will be ready when you arrive in the morning. Each hotel will be able to check luggage until the rooms are available.

° The area around Utrecht Centraal Station is undergoing a massive redevelopment, so be prepared for a little bit of construction chaos. It’s approximately a 10-minute walk to the Hotel Karel V. From the main station hall, follow signs for ‘Centrum.’ You’ll pass through the Hoog Catharijne

Getting to the Volkshotel in Amsterdam From Amsterdam Central Station, the fastest way is by Metro (subway) to ‘Wibaustraat.’ If you arrived by rail from Schiphol Airport or another rail station, you’ll buy a separate ticket for the Metro. Trains leave approximately every 10 minutes. All Dutch public transportation tickets require you to ‘check-in’ at the beginning of your trip by tapping your card at a card reader at a gate or kiosk before boarding. You’ll tap it again to ‘check-out’ when you arrive at your destination.

Once you arrive at Amsterdam Central Station, follow signs for ‘Metro.’ (The logo is a big blue ‘M’). Take any train (51, 53, or 54) four stops to Wibaustraat. The Volkshotel is just a few steps from the Metro exit.

Getting to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport at the Conclusion of the Study Tour

There are numerous ways to get to Schiphol Airport via tram, metro, train and bus, or taxi.

The most cost-effective way is to take the Metro or Tram to Centraal Station, and switch to rail to Schiphol Airport. Allow 1 hour. The fare is approximately $7.

Check http://www.ns.nl/en/travellers/home for the latest train schedules and times.

A more expensive but faster method is taxi. The hotel can arrange one for you. Uber is also widely used in Amsterdam, for a similar price (around $50). It takes about 35 minutes.
