Proudly Presents
By Jessica QuasCimino sprinted her way to second place in the NJSIAA
Outdoor Track & Field Meet of Champions 400 intermedi-
ate hurdles with a time of 1:00.87. Her outstanding accom-
plishments include winning four events at the Gene “Red”
Littler Bergen County Track & Field Championships in the
400 hurdles, and both the 200 and 100 high hurdles. Alex-
andra was also a part of the Cardinal’s 4x400 relay team
that set one of the fastest times in Bergen Championship
history of 3:57.17.
Cimino, described as a “once in a decade” type student,
is well rounded—involved in sports, school clubs, the Na-
tional Honor Society and is an accomplished singer. She is
looking forward to attending the University of Pennsylva-
nia in the fall and hopes to run track for the Quakers.
page 3editor@sportsfi tnesswellness.com
By Jessica QuasRamapo Raider, Jonathan Carcione, has many accom-
plishments that may never be surpassed, leaving a lasting
legacy on Ramapo Tennis. Carcione was only the sixth
athlete to ever win the NJSIAA Boys Tennis Tournament
of Champions twice and the third Ramapo player to win
a state championship. He dominated on the court with a
two-year unbeaten record of 65-0, ending his career at
Ramapo 127-2.
Aside from his outstanding tennis achievements, Car-
cione proves to be a young man of high character and
a great role model for younger students and peers. He is
a member of the Italian World Language Honor Society
and also enjoys playing the piano, hiking, and spending
time with his brothers. Carcione not only produced on the
court, but also in the classroom and plans to continue his
studies and tennis career at Princeton University.

S o p h o m o r e Steph Thomas was the outstanding
player throughout Immaculate Heart Academy’s run to its second straight Bergen Coun-ty Softball Tournament title. The sophomore right-hander scattered fi ve hits and one run while fanning six in hurling the Blue Eagles to an 8-1 triumph over third-seeded Paramus in the title game played on the campus of Montclair State Uni-versity on June 2.
Leading 2-1 entering the bot-tom of the third, IHA pushed three runs across the plate to increase its advantage to 5-1. Cassidy Trause doubled in a run and Danielle Ibarra drilled a two-run double and the rest was up to Thomas. The Blue Eagle had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Abby Holmes and Trause
singled and Angela McGurie drew a base on balls to load the sacks. Ibarra connected with an RBI single and Trause scored on a run-down. Lauren Feorenzo, Paramus’ outstanding hurler, drove in the Lady Spartan’s sole tally of the game in the third.
IHA scratched out a 2-0 vic-tory over 21st-seeded Hack-ensack in the semifi nals when Thomas pitched a two-hit shut-out and aided her own cause when she launched a sacrifi ce fl y to plate senior second base-man Carly Picinich who led off the bottom of the fi rst with a triple. Abby Thomas delivered an insurance tally when she drove in Nicole Napolitano with a two-out single in the fourth. In the lower bracket, Feorenzo scattered nine hits as the Lady Spartans defeated Ramsey 3-2 in 10 innings to knock the sec-ond-seeded Rams out of the unbeaten class. Her teammate Stephanie Huang led off the
game with a home run. Trail-ing 2-0, Ramsey knotted the contest when delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh. When the game went to the 10th inning, the international tiebreaker criteria was invoked. Huang started the top of the 10th on second base, scoring on an infi eld out by Feo-renzo who blanked the Rams in the bottom of the inning, end-ing the contest on a strikeout.
In the quarterfi nals, Paramus scored the only run of a 1-0 victory over Immaculate Con-ception/Lodi in the bottom of the fi rst on an error. Feorenzo scattered four hits in picking up the shutout “W” while the Blue Wolves Kelly Hage allowed only two hits and no earned runs in defeat. Thomas did it all once again for the Blue Eagles in a 5-0 victory over Saddle Brook. She legged out a two-run triple while hurling a two-hit shutout. Taylor Farro gave up eight hits and a pair of runs in the bot-tom of the fi rst, but the Comets bailed her out with only four hits when Hackensack rallied to a 3- win over Ridgewood. this team to go undefeated is something special.”
The season culminated with the Non-Public A victory, 3-0, over St. John Vianney at Toms River East. The group title avenged a 10-2 loss to the same St. John Vianney last season in the same game. “I think beating them (St. John Vianney) that it validated the whole season and it truly was a magical season,” said LaRezza.
While it is a cliché LaRezza said that the entire team en-joyed playing with each other and was cohesive. “Everybody was on board and it was a plea-sure to coach this team,” said the IHA head coach. “IF they don’t coexist, they won’t win.”
While the Blue Eagles do not have captains, he points to se-niors Carly Piccinich and Abby Holmes. “They took the lead,” said LaRezza.
On the fi eld IHA was led by four players who were named to the All Bergen County fi rst team in sophomore Thomas, junior catcher Ally Vergona, infi elder Piccinich and sophomore out-fi elder Rachel Pollard.
The IHA head coach started as an assistant coach in 1997 though 2003 at the Washington Township school. He left IHA along with then head coach Jeff Horohonich.
As it turns out he would spend one year at Montclair Kimber-
ley Academy before coming back to IHA, this time as a head coach in 2004. “I asked H (Ho-rohonich) if it was okay that I would go back,” said LaRezza. “I wanted to get his blessing.”
Horohonich, who now is the athletic director and head bas-ketball and softball coaches at Immaculate Conception in Lodi, had brought in LaRezza to IHA in ‘97.
For LaRezza he attended Montclair State University for about a week when he decided to play minor league baseball in the late 1980s and the early 1990s.
After his stint in minor league baseball, LaRezza returned to New Jersey and started the New Jersey Pride in 1991. The Pride’s origins were in Newark and was named after a Newark project called Project Pride.
As it turned out LaRezza just grew to love the sport of softball and likes it better than baseball. “The game is quicker and fast-er,” said the IHA head coach. “I didn’t think I would get respect from the guys.”
LaRezza ended up at IHA af-ter one of the players who also played for the Pride suggested him to Horohonich for a coach-ing position. The player was Meaghan Asselta who is now head softball coach at Lafayette College.
For LaRezza he said that there
have been some big changes since he fi rst started coach-ing in 1991 for high school softball including moving the circle from 40 feet to 43 feet, the same as in college, but there are others. “The female athlete has come a long way,” said LaRezza who added. “It seems to be more sports-spe-cifi c now.”
He added though that he be-lieves that the girls should try other sports. “I would never deter a girl from playing an-other sport,” said LaRezza. “I said knock yourself out.”
Looking back on the season the IHA head coach points to two of the wins in the drive to win the Non-Public A North state sectional title. The 10-in-ning 4-3 victory over DePaul to win the sectional title and also the 2-0 win over Pope John in the sectional semi-fi nals.

LaRezza Helps to Make it a ‘Magical’ Season for IHABy Edward Kensik
WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP — It might have been at the be-ginning of the season, but for Anthony LaRezza it was defi -nitely telling for the season.
LaRezza, the coach of Immac-ulate Heart Academy, helped guide the Blue Eagles to the Triple Crown, Big North, Ber-gen County and state Group titles.
For the IHA head coach he had an inkling about this team way back near the start of the season, April 14 at the Mount St. Dominic softball tourna-ment in Caldwell.
In the game Blue Eagles pitcher Steph Thomas would strike out back-to-back batters in the top of the seventh as Pennsbury, PA was looking to take the lead with runners on second and third and one out.
IHA would score four runs in the eighth inning to win 8-4 against the Pennsylvania pow-erhouse.
Not only did IHA garner the Triple Crown, but they went un-defeated, 32-0, along the way and could be considered one of the best if not the best softball team in New Jersey history.
“I knew that we would be in contention for all those titles,” said LaRezza. “If you told me that we would go undefeated I would say you were crazy. I have good teams at IHA but

Wayne Valley rallied from a 2-0 defi cit, pushing four runs across the plate in the bottom of the fourth to pull out a 6-2 victory over Ridgewood in the NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group IV playoffs. Madison Galligan’s three-run round-tripper highlighted the four-run surge while Lindsay Lichtenberger doubled in the other run. Nick Carillo, who was the winning pitcher, doubled in a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Robert Papa netted fi ve goals and distributed an assist to propel the Indians to a 12-6 triumph over Mainland Regional in the preliminary round of the NJSIAA Group III Boys Lacrosse Tournament. Steven Ardwar contributed a hat trick effort while Dave Drozjodk scored a goal and directed the attack, dishing off four assists. James Clarke and Billy Crank tallied solo goals and were credited with three assists apiece.
Success in the coaching ranks seldom rates a head line, but when St. Joseph Regional/Montvale defeated St. Peter’s Prep 7-5 in the quarterfi nal round of the NJ-SIAA Non-Public A Division playoffs, the highlight of the victory was that it was win No. 555 for Green Knight head coach Frank Salvano that tied the all-time record for career wins by a Bergen County baseball coach.
Normally, the walk-off two-run homer off the bat of se-nior second baseman Nick Wolyniece in the bottom of the seventh would have been an editor’s choice, but one game pales to 555 wins. Corey Kerche, Matt Ko-zuch and Alex Woinski contributed RBIs while Green Knight ace Rob Kaminsky was the winning pitcher.

SPOMINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL
By Toni Plantamura-Rossi
Founded in 1998 as a franchise in
the Northeast League, the New Jersey Jackals have uti-lized Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ throughout the franchise’s ex-istence on the diamond.
“Minor” is not a word to de-scribe the overall operation of the New Jersey Jackals except when it comes to labeling the pricing of attending a game. It is “major” when describing the physical surroundings of the venue and the degree of family-oriented fun that is present. On the fi eld, Angel Berroa launched a career that elevated him to becoming a major league infi elder who was selected the American League Rookie of the Year in 2003 while a member of the Kansas City Royals.
Pete Rose, Jr, who played as PJ Rose, was on the Jackals’ roster in 1998 and 1999 while Timo Perez played in the out-fi eld at Berra Stadium in 2009 before joining the Detroit Ti-gers. Paramus’ Isaac Pavlik, a 5-7, 170-pound southpaw is a current standout who is on the
brink of establishing many new career pitching records. The 33-year old is 3-0 this season after posting a team high 13-3 ledger last year. His career sta-tistics include appearing in 59 games with a 24-11 record and ERA of 3.54 while striking out 233 batters.
In their inaugural 1998 cam-paign, the Jackals posted the Northeast League best-record of 53-31 and followed with a sweep of two playoff series to capture the championship with a fi nal season win over the Al-bany-Colonie Diamond Dogs. The following year the North-east League was absorbed into the Northern League. The Jack-als went 45-40 during the regu-lar season, swept the Allentown Ambassadors in the fi rst round of the playoffs but fell to the Diamond Dogs in the fi nals.
In 2005, the Jackals joined the Can-Am League and con-tinue to fl ourish. One constant at Berra Stadium over the years as managers, coaches and players came and went as been the presence of Jack the Jackal, the team mascot. The mascot has provided team recognition and branding that kids and adults love, connect-ing the fan base to the team as a family.

River Edge’s Mi-chelle Bevilacqua will enter her junior
year at Syracuse University this fall where she is a hospi-tality management major and a sports hospitality and event management minor. She is a graduate of River Dell High School where she played soc-cer and basketball as a fresh-man.

She also worked every after-noon at the River Edge Ex-tended Daycare Program, an after school program at the Roosevelt Elementary school in River Edge, NJ where chil-dren can stay after school if their parents sign them up.
After college, Bevilacqua hopes to pursue a career in the sport industry, combining her major and minor to become an event manager at a sports arena. The program is set up so the interns get a good feel of each depart-ment within the sta-dium. I have learned a lot so far and am excited to eventually use the skills that I have learned in my career.”

Entering his 8th year with the New Jersey Jackals,
Ramsey’s Isaac Pavlik con-tinues to be one the premier pitchers for the Can-Am franchise. This year, he has gotten off to anoth-er strong start go-ing 3-0 with a 3.86 ERA.
Originally from Paramus, Pavlik is coming off a 2011 campaign in which he won a career-high 13 games. He was named to the Can-Am League’s Postseason All-Star Team as the squad’s left-handed pitcher after leading the league in strikeouts (112), innings (131.2), and games started (19), fi nishing second in wins (13), complete games (5), and shutouts (1), and rank-ing third in ERA (2.73).

From the naming rights of the venue, to the meticulous
manicure of the diamond and the ambience of the vendors’ concourse one strolls along to get to the seats, it is a major league experience at minor league prices. For young and old, the New Jersey Jackals, a member of the Can-Am League, a non-affi liated minor baseball league founded in 1936, provides a local venue within 25 miles of the Yan-kees and Mets, but at afford-able family-style prices. The league is operating with fi ve franchises during the 2012 season, including the Jack-als and Newark Bears in New Jersey. The other teams are the Quebec Capitales, Rock-land (NY) Boulders and the Worcester (MA) Tornadoes.
Before entering the stadium, one may visit the adjacent Yogi Berra Museum & Learn-ing Center that is recognized as the metropolitan New York
area’s premier sports educa-tion center. Yogi Berra’s values, extraordinary Hall of Fame ac-complishments and lifelong commitment to the education of young people were the in-spiration and foundation of the facility that was built privately by a group of friends and ad-mirers to pay tribute to the re-markable life and career of the Yankee legend.
As tenants of Yogi Berra Sta-dium, the ownership and man-agement of the New Jersey Jackals are utilizing 22 college and graduate school interns this season, providing real-life experiences for students look-ing to enter the Sports Indus-try.
On a Thursday evening in May, the Jackals’ hosted the Fairleigh Dickinson Univer-sity Graduate School of Sports Administration’s Sports Media & Communications Class. The Jackals entertained and defeat-ed the Rockland (NY)Boulders in a thrilling 3-2 contest that saw a pair of solidly bleated round-trippers.

cially for Jackal fans who like to be part of the action. With over 30 various promotions there is always something new for fans to view and experience. Between every inning several interns and Jack the Jackal, the team’s mascot, take the fi eld with a challenge for the fans. Usually the fi rst promotional challenge is a T-shirt Toss to the loudest fans to get the crowd ex-cited. Then there is the Launch-a-Jackal that includes a young fan who receives three chances trying to catch a small Jackal in a net that is being launched by an elastic slingshot. If the fan catches it just once, they re-ceive jackal dollars that can be used for food or in the Jackals team store.
Next was a fan favorite when two fans were selected for the Dizzy Bat Race. The fans com-pete against one another spin-ning around with their foreheads on the bat ten times then race across fi rst base as the crowd cheers them on. Another pro-motion included a Sumo match between two selected fans that dressed in heavy sumo suits. The two fans chest bumped each other several times until one was knocked down. The one who remained standing was declared the winner.
The biggest promotion that is done at Yogi Berra stadium

is the Launch a Ball. Through-out the game a few interns go around selling $1 tennis balls and fans can buy as many as they want. At the end of the game, hula hoops are placed all over the infi eld. Then fans take the tennis balls and try to toss them into the hula hoops, which represent a different prize if made. The further the hula hoop the better the prize. Some of the prizes included jackal dollars, free game tick-ets and free Yogi Berra Muse-um tickets.
There were 22 college stu-dents who are serving intern-ships with the Jackals this season. They not only absorb a grass-roots learning expe-rience preparing them for careers in the sport industry, they also get a good physical workout.

In the digital age, it may seem that the days of the li-brary being the primary place for school research are long gone, but libraries continue to offer the best research da-tabases available - databases that can’t be accessed via an internet search. Navigating the library is an important research tool for any student. How can students best use library resources? Here are several tips for students to become better researchers:
Ask for the librarian’s as-sistance. Librarians can help your teen get to know the lay

of the library, but they can also help guide your student through the various catalogs and research databases and how best to use them. Your teen should take advantage of their expertise and availability to students.
Move beyond the internet. Google is not enough - even specifi c databases such as Google Books and Google Scholar do not offer the depth and breadth of other library catalogs. Schools’ library sys-tems have access to networks of electronic resources that contain information that can-not be found anywhere else. Need materials from across
the world? Try the World-Cat database. Researching a historical fi gure? Try your library’s biography database. Students should get familiar with the variety of resources available and their proper uses.
Understand the differences between primary and second-ary sources. A well-researched paper on World War II should cite as many primary sources as possible, as opposed to only referencing materials that are several steps removed from the war itself. What’s the dif-ference? Original documents such as interviews, offi cial re-cords, speeches or diaries are considered primary sources, whereas magazine articles, commentaries or textbooks are secondary sources. Again, librarians are a great resource to identify solid sources of in-formation.
Get to know the school’s databases. While your teen’s high school may use a few da-tabases, large public libraries or college libraries may have hundreds of databases to choose from. Learning how to research topics using different databases will prepare your teen for college-level research. If you live near a college cam-pus, encourage your teen to visit and get familiar with their resources - and seek the help of a research librarian.
Evaluate sources. As a teen progresses through high school, teachers will hold him or her to a higher standard when it comes to research. Relying on Wikipedia will not suffi ce. If sources are not pri-mary sources, they still must
be credible and factual. If a student uses an online source, he or she must make sure it is valid and reliable. A librarian can help students evaluate their fi ndings to de-termine their quality, and as-sist in further research if bet-ter sources are needed.
When your teen goes on to college, good research skills will be an important asset, and students who are famil-iar with the resources and services offered at the library will be a step ahead. Encour-age your teen to utilize the library and take advantage of the knowledge and skills of librarians. Not only will this make him or her a better stu-dent now, it will also help lay the foundation for success at college.
