With a quartet of returning veter-ans who collected

Bergen County Women’s Coaches Association all-star accolades at the conclusion of the 2010 campaign, head coach Paul Heenahan had Ramapo positioned to stop Immaculate Heart Academy from fi ve-peating as Bergen County Tournament champi-ons.

Seeded No. 1 the Blue Eagles defeated the second-seeded Green Raiders 2-0 in the 2010 title contest to be-come only the second school to win as many as four con-secutive crowns. The all-time streak is fi ve set by Ramapo from 1981 through 1985 so the target of this year’s Ra-mapo squad will be to retain the overall girls county brag-ging rights.

Following a fi rst-round bye, Ramapo defeated Indian Hills (2-1), Glen Rock (5-0) and Northern Highlands (0-0 on penalty kicks 4-3) to advance to the championship round. The Green Raiders are domi-nant on the front wall with senior Amanda Baumgar-

ten, junior Jen Andresen and sophomore Caroline Chagares while the defensive end will be the responsibility of senior Maddie Dalie.

Immaculate Heart Academy has three prominent returning starters who will maintain the Blue Eagles’ traditional stan-dard of excellence. The IHA defense, anchored by senior goalkeeper Kassandra Nunez who is protected by senior defender Chritsine LaMonica is solid. Up front, the Blue Ea-gles will look to junior forward Samantha Wilkes to put goals on the board.

Outstanding performances are a tradition in girls’ soccer at Northern Highlands and the 2011 campaign, despite heavy losses to graduation in June, will be no exception. Coach Tara Madigan does not re-build, she reloads her program annually. One of the leaders will by junior midfi elder Jackie Reyneke.

Glen Rock, which for two straight years has been ousted by Ramapo, has the founda-tion to reach the Final Four. Two juniors, forward Sophie Lederer and midfi elder Han-nah Petrone, are the present and future of the Lady Pan-

thers’ program.Ramsey possesses a lineup

of quality seniors, though none are returning all-stars but Morgan Coonrad has the talent to crack this season’s post-season list of honorees.

Paramus will be in the mix for a berth in the Top 5 at season’s end as the Lady Spartams have a returning all-county player in junior forward Sarah Cortese. Two other talented teammates are sophomore forward Alyssa Poplaski and senior midfi elder Lauren Fiorino.

Senior co-captains Ash-ley Davidson and Courtney Tarleton are the veterans of a young Ridgewood squad which will get better with game experience as the sea-son progresses. Up front on the Lady Maroons’ front wall as sophomore Darby Kietrhan and frosh Beth Zrike while sophomore Olivia Shaw has won the startung goalkeeper assignment.

River Dell could exceed pre-season expectations with an athletic cast of players. Junior Frankie Maier will be the look-to player on the young and speedy front line of the Gold-en Hawks.

Brendan Gus-man and Jamie Montero will be the

seasoned leaders of a Clifton squad that produced a 20-2-1 record last fall. Both Mustang standouts were accorded all-county accolades following their junior campaigns.

Guzman, a defender who has rehabbed from a variety of injuries including a bro-ken foot and a pin inserted in a toe, is inspired by watch-ing his mother rebound from a third bout with cancer be-tween seasons. Hr anchors a strong defensive unit that in-cludes Diego Espinoza and Jose Macedo. Montero domi-nates in the midfi eld with ex-cellent transition techniques and inter-reacts with junior attacking midfi elder Matt Miazga.

Wayne Valley will challenge Clifton’s claim on the top coun-ty ranking. Senior co-captain and midfi elder Mike DeLuise is a talented playmaker, An-thony Nucci, the other co-cap-tain is hard to cover as a for-ward who will pass off or fi re a shot, depending what is best for the team. A third aggres-sive senior midfi elder is Kevin Traupmann while the defense is anchored by seniors Diego-nis Panahiotos and Alex She-rian along with junior Andrew Keane.

Passaic Tech has two return-ing all county players, senior John Gonzalez and junior En-ver Caymaz, one of the top midfi elders in northern New Jersey. Jason Gold is a senior midfi elder who will be a major factor in the success of the Wayne Hills’ program.

Hawthorne’s senior midfi eld-er Walther Castillo will put in

In addition, he is eligible for scholarship money, almost a half ride and possibly more. So the cost of the video was a great investment! He got a lot of other looks from D-2 and D-3 programs based upon the video. North Jersey Volleyball Expected to be Strong Againgles should be favorites to take the Non-Public title again and also the Bergen County title

2. Bogota – While Bogota is a Group 1 school, the girls vol-leyball program run by head coach Brad DiRupo is far from that with a large number of girls playing the sport. The Group 1 reigning champions, Lady Bucs have the top freshman last sea-son in the state back in sopho-more hitter Carly O’Sullivan, who was second team All Ber-gen in 2010, along with one of the top sophomores from last year in junior Julia Topor.

3. River Dell – This might be the best shot for the Lady Gold-en Hawks in winning a state championship in 13 years. It also might be the best team that head coach Diane Furu-sawa has put on the fl oor in her 16 years leading the program. River Dell has plenty back in battling in one of the toughest groups in the state in Group 2. The number one reason for this hope is senior middle hitter Kate Brock, who is the lone re-turning fi rst All Bergen County player back for 2011. Brock is part of a group of fi ve start-ers returning for River Dell that also includes a pair of talented seniors in Caitlyn Gallagher and Emily Wilts.

4. NV/Demarest – While Old Tappan got the headlines last season, Demarest continued to be one of the top teams in Bergen County. While garner-ing a 10th seed in the county tournament, the Norsewomen stunned IHA in the semi-fi nals before bowing to Ramapo. Ju-nior outside hitter Haley Hirsch leads the Norsewomen this season with a strong serve that resulted in 42 aces in 2010.

5. NV/Old Tappan – Old Tap-pan lost a lot from last sea-son including three All Bergen County players in Aiyana Whit-ney, Taylor Jansen and Anna Kate Miller, but the program’s history and the return of se-nior Kelsey Morgan, a second team All Bergen County player, should give the Lady Knights a good run when it is all said

GIRLS VOLLEYBALLGIRLS VOLLEYBALL FIELD HOCKEYFIEL

– The top freshman in New Jersey last season is back and her all-around game should improve while continu-ing her offense that puts fear in opponents. As a freshman O’Sullivan only put up 284 kills and 160 digs.

Ryann Powell, Holy Angels – One of the best setters in Bergen County and possibly the state, Powell looks to lead Angels to success in the coun-ty and put a scare into IHA for the Non-Public crown. Powell was second team All Bergen County last season.

Kelsey Morgan, Old Tappan – A lot will be placed on Mor-gan this season for the Lady Knights. Morgan is one of the few starters back for Old Tap-pan after the Knights took home practically every title last season.

Other top players – IHA’s Michelle Cruz, Demarest’s Haley Hirsch, Pascack Valley’s Kaitlin MacIver and Mahwah’s Macy Schwartz.

By Edward KensikNorth Jersey has always

been the power in New Jer-sey when it has come to girls volleyball.

While central and south-ern New Jersey have made strides the last few years, North Jersey still is king and that was shown last season as Old Tappan defeated Ramapo to win the State Tournament of Champions. It was a repeat of the Bergen County Tourna-ment fi nal that was also won by Old Tappan.

With the likes of Immacu-late Heart Academy, Old Tap-pan, Demarest, Bogota, Ra-mapo, Rutherford and more, Bergen County has been the stalwart in the state when it has come to New Jersey girls volleyball.

It seems strange but Old Tappan won its fi rst state title since 1992. The Lady Knights have always been in the run-ning for a state title, but have fallen short. It was the ninth Group 3 championship for Old Tappan.

But the Lady Knights lost plenty of starters from last season and teams like IHA, River Dell and Bogota will be looking to pounce on Old Tappan and claim a county title.

While Passaic County is be-hind Bergen when it comes to girls volleyball, they also have talented teams with the likes of Clifton, DePaul and Lakeland, the defending Pas-saic County champions.

TOP TEAMS

1. Immaculate Heart Acad-emy – For many programs the loss of Raquel Scott who de-cided to concentrate on one sport, basketball, would have been devastating, but that is not the case for the power-house Eagles. IHA has several players back not withstanding Scott that saw varsity time last season led by junior libero Mi-chelle Cruz and middle hitter sophomore Nia Reed. The Ea-

and done at state tournament time.

Other top teams – Clifton, De-Paul, Mahwah, Pascack Hills, Ramapo and Rutherford.

TOP FIVE PLAYERS

Kate Brock, River Dell – This could be a big year for not only Brock, but also for the Lady Golden Hawks. Her fourth year as a starter is sure to be even bigger in terms of numbers after she racked up 198 kills, 163 digs and 46 blocks last season.

Grace Hong, Rutherford – A lot more will be asked of Hong, a senior, for the Lady Bulldogs. Hong will be without her tal-ented sister, Deborah, a fi rst team All Bergen County player who has moved on to Fair-leigh Dickinson University. But Grace should be able to pick up some of the slack offensively to match her outstanding de-fensive game.

Coming off an 11-6-1 record in 2010, seniors Morgan

Bishop and Melissa Gwon are quality veterans who can raise the level of play and make Ramsey a threat for the Bergen County Tourna-ment crown. A right-inner, Gwon netted 10 goals and distributed 14 assist, utilizing a powerful stroke from out-side the circle. An outstand-ing defender, Bishop is also a threat to score as evidenced by her eight goals and fi ve as-sists when she crossed mid-fi eld. Juniors Rae Calinento and Melanie Consiglio are other impact veterans for the Rams.

Pompton Lakes, which posted the top record of 20-2

in North East Jersey in 2010, lost three fi rst-team all Passaic County players to graduation. However, the Lady Cardinals return Amy Cahill between the pipes. The PCCA fi rst-team selection as goalkeeper registered 135 saves, allowing only 14 goals when she tied the school single-season re-cord for shutouts. She blanked 15 opponents a year ago and will make Pompton Lakes a contender for a repeat as PCT champion.

West Milford has quality lead-ership in seniors Samantha Browne and Deborah Wolfe, both of whom were all-county accolades last season. Browne, who plays on the Highlanders’ boys’ ice hockey team, scored 19 times and passed off six as-sist while Wolfe possesses out-standing defensive skills.

Two sophs and a junior loom as the top all-around com-

The sophs are Ridgewood’s Nikki Granert, also a BCWCA All-Star honoree, who posted a total score of 35.175 in the BCT and Wayne Hills’ Alexan-dra Hirch who placed third in the PCT with a point total of 34.75.

Wayne Hills will be a powerful contended for the PCT title this fall as the Lady Patriots’ lineup also includes senior Gina Fav-

occi and junior Tiffany Dhar-ia. West Milford will challenge Wayne Hills with sophomore Lauren Chimelski and senior Sarah Silvestri who placed 4-5 in the all-around standings as the 2010 county champion-ships. Sophomore Emily Mc-Namara will bolster the Lady Highlanders’ team total.

In the BCT, Ramapo’s Claire Scavine will contend for the gold medal in the beam com-petition and is rated a top-5 performer in the all-around.

years against Bergen Catholic which won 10 games in 2010 under fi rst-year coach Nunzio Campanile.

“You won’t fi nd a better high school football doubleheader anywhere this season,” said Tom Lemming of CBS Sports. “The talent these four schools possess is mind=boggling with many of the kids playing at big-time college programs in the near future. This is high school football at its best.”

Caro, who has verbally com-mitted to the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers, is one of the premier wide-outs in the nation, record-ing 926 receiving yards as a junior when he hauled in 16

touchdown aerials. Hamilton, who is undecided in his college prospecting process, is the son of former Giants standout and Pitt All-American Keith Hamilton.

Greg Toal, DBP’s head coach stated, “We are fully aware that great high school football is played in Florida, especially at Manatee. We know what we are getting ourselves into. They are an exceptionally tal-ented and well-coached foot-ball team.”

DBP opens at home on Sep-tember 10. Hosting the nation’s No. 19th-ranked squad, Mis-sion Viejo (CA) which led by running back Jahleel Painter

Teaneck and Don Bosco, Ber-gen Catholic will be paired against Friendship Academy of Washington, DC in the opening game of the October 8 triple-headers while St. Peter’s Prep (Jersey) which plays the Cru-saders on October 28, will play Youngstown Christian (OH) in the fi nal game.

DBP and Bergen Catholic rank 1-2 in the Metropolitan New York Football Writers As-sociations’ North East Jersey Top 30 preseason poll with Wayne Hills, Passaic County’s top team, rated third and the Green Knights of St. Joseph Regional/Montvale situated in four place and Northern Valley/Old Tappan placed fi fth.

Tony Karich is a proven grid-iron mentor whose St. Joseph Regional/Montvale program is continually a dominant pro-gram that has passed the test of time against formidable opponents. On this year’s schedule are Don Bosco Prep, Bergen Catholic and Wayne Hills, the top three teams in the

“We made the decision that if we were going to be the best, we needed to challenge ourselves,” said Campanile. “There is no question that we’ve done that by going to Florida and playing another championship-caliber Plant team. We’ll give it our best shot.”

For the second year in a row, the Crusaders open against La Salle College High School (PA) before heading to Florida. Fol-lowing in-state contests against

who has orally committed to the Trojans of USC. Follow-ing games against Ridgewood (September 23) and Bergen Catholic (September 30), DBP will play fourth-ranked St. Edward (OH) of Lakewood, OH as part of a triple-header with Bergen Catholic and St. Peter’s Prep (Jersey City) in the Garden State.

Bergen Catholic, ranked No. 5 in the North East by USA Football Network, is paced by 5-10, 185-pound Mike Gerst who is the defi nition of an outstanding student/athlete. Wayne ValleyWayne Valley is often overshadowed by the success of its cross-town ri-val, but don’t let that fool you. Over the last six years Valley has a 43-18 record and has qualifi ed for the state playoffs fi ve times. Last season, they ended with an embarrassing 48-0 defeat to Hills, but this year will be different. Valley only has 15 seniors on the roster this season, leaving plenty of room for younger players to step up. Coach Brian O’Conner will trust the ball in the hands of senior Alex Trani who is expected to be the team’s leading rusher. Dominating offensive lineman Mike Ruth will be Trani’s leading blocker as they hope to continue the program’s success. They may not get by Hills this year, but the 2012 squad will be battle tested and ready to fi nally step out of the shadow.

Pompton LakesInjuries really hurt the 2010 Pomp-ton Lakes team, but with everyone healthy this could be one of the best public school running games in North Jersey. Seniors Nieko Torres and Kevin Fego will carry the ball this season and will follow the lead of veteran linemen Justin Shovlowsky, Teddy Houlis, Patrick Filippini and Andrew Grossar. This front-line will be diffi cult to penetrated and have the ability to push defenses up and down the fi eld. Ground and pound is the game plan that will lift Pompton Lakes back up to the top.

pre-season poll while the Green Knights are picked fourth.

DePaul is ranked ninth with a solid defense that includes defensive back Davon Jacobs who has the ability to play at the next level in 2012. On the “O” line, the Spartans will look to Casey Pavlosky to clear the way for the running backs.

Wayne Hills under legend-ary head coach Chris Olsen, is once again the team to beat in the public sector. Opponents will be tested by the Avedisain twins, Jason and Justin, who are the solid blocks in the Patri-ots’ front wall on the attack.

Northern Valley/Old Tappan is rated the premier public school

squad in Bergen County, plac-ing fi fth in the pre-season poll. The Golden Knights attack is a proven factor as senior Devin Fuller is one of the top signal callers in the Garden State. Fuller, who was elected by the Bergen County Coaches Asso-ciation as the fi rst team quar-terback in 2010, recorded 4,221 yards as a junior churning out 1902 yards rushing and scor-ing 32 touchdowns and throw-ing for 2,319 yards and con-necting on 20 TD passes. The “D” unit is anchored by Dan Falkenstern, a 5-10, 205-pound linebacker who racked up 118 tackles, forced two fumbles and recovered one.

Lakeland, Passaic County’s No. 2 program ranks seventh in the North East poll as the Lancers will rely on senior Joey Engels to fi ll the signal caller’s role. Engels, who was a wide-receiver last season, fi lled in as the starting quarterback twice when he was a sopho-more. If his performance in a come-from-behind 36-35 vic-tory over Ferris (Jersey City) when the Lancers rallied from a 21-0 defi cit, is an indication of his ability under fi re, Lake-land will be a threat for the

NOTABLES TO WATCH

Pascack ValleyThis may seem like a high spot on the list for Pascack Valley, who fi n-ished the 2010 season with a 3-7 record. But we think they will sur-prise everyone this year. In Coach Al Cappello’s third year as head coach, he has been turning this team around unlike previous.

With several quality wide receivers, Cappello has a diffi cult decision to make at the quarterback spot. Senior Dean Pezzino, junior Joey Mazalewski and sophomore Anthony Deritis are all battling for the start-ing spot. The Hornets open up the season against their heated rivals Wayne Valley. If they can defeat Val-ley then this may be a big season for Cappello’s Hornets.

River DellCoach D.J. Nimphius has a dilemma on his hands—who’s going to be the quarterback? As the preseason reaches its end, Nimphius has to choose between four quality quar-terbacks in seniors Sean Boland and Mike Oliver, and juniors Tim Barnes and Ryan Duran.

They will be returning six starters on both offense and defense, but their size may be a factor as it was last season. With Ramsey and Mahwah both on rebuilding years this could be the best chance for the Golden Hawks to retake the division.

Dear Friend,

My name is Danny Thompson and I am a junior at Indian Hills High

School. I am reaching out to local businesses and families asking

for your support in my effort to raise money for the Christopher

Brandle Joy of Life Foundation. This fall I will be the quarterback

for the Indian Hills High School football team. To raise money for

the foundation, I am starting the Score for the Cure program. You can

help me in my effort by pledging money for every yard I pass or run or

touchdown the team scores or by simply making a flat dollar donation.

There are also sponsorship opportunities.

The Christopher Brandle Joy of Life Foundation was formed April 1,

2010 to honor the memory of Christopher Brandle, who passed away

on March 31, 2010 at age 10 after bravely fighting Medulloblastoma,

a form of brain cancer. Christopher was a happy, vibrant child who

was very involved in his community and truly loved life. He was

also a huge sports enthusiast. The Foundation was started by Chris’s

parents, Brian and Mary Brandle, and its purpose is to raise money

for pediatric brain tumor research, specifically Medulloblastoma.

The Foundation may also provide financial assistance to families who

have a child battling a brain tumor.

Very little is known about pediatric brain tumors, which makes

treatment extremely difficult and with devastating long term effects.

With your help, the Christopher Brandle Joy of Life Foundation

will assist in advancing the research and treatment of pediatric brain

tumors with the hope to one day find a cure.

Sincerely,

Danny Thompson

NJSIAA North Jersey, Section 1, Group II title. Against Ferris as a sophomore, Engels regis-tered 296 yards passing with four TD tosses.

Ramapo completes the Top 10 and one of the Green Raid-ers primary problems is the schedule with three opponents, Wayne Hills, St. Joseph Re-gional/Montvale and Northern Valley/Old Tappan ranked 3-4-5 on the pre-season poll. Senior tailback Mike Hronocich is the veteran on coach Drew Gibbs’ attack that will be directed by quarterback Ryan Daugherty. Standing 6-2, Daughery will look downfi eld to connect with wire-receiver Doug Norkettl. The offensive front wall has fi ve new starters.

Head coach Vince Tribuzio has Ramsey positioned to reach the NJSIAA North I, Section III title game for a third straight sea-son. Ranked #8, the Rams will look to senior wide-out/defen-sive back P.J. Scandiarato as a leader on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Dan Zaloom has switched from tight end to an-chor the offensive front wall as

the center while Dylan Minnake moves from center to guard where he can lead the plays. The defensive secondary looks strong with Scandariato joined by veterans Nick Dispoto and Jared Donnasumma along with Darius Ghahardy who was side-lined last season with an injury.

Saddle Brook, coming off an 8-2 mark in 2010, is loaded on defense and sits on the fringe of the elite 10. Head coach Leo Ciappina has a trio of four-year veterans in the linebacker slots. Steven Longa, who has made a verbal commitment to Rut-gers, is joined by teammates Joe Camalleri and Mike Donna-rumma. Longa and classmate Tyler Vitello are power-running

backs while four-year starter Matt Dickinson is a breakaway running back. Another senior Andrew Caravaglia begins his second year as the starter at quarterback.

For a surprise team, take a look at Cresskill. Head coach Bob Valli has four returning starters on offense coming off a 9-2 season in 2010. Senior Ryan Feulner (6-1, 180) moves from wide-receiver to take over the quarterback assign-ment and will hand off to the 1-2 punch of Gion Lagalia (6-1, 200) and Ray Kim (5-10, 215). Rich Van Cleft (6-3, 235) will be the leader in the defensive trenches and is projected as a FCS (NCAA I-AA) prospect.

RidgewoodThe return of Coach Rob Gentile as of-fensive coordinator could have a huge impact on the Maroons this season, but it is their defense led by senior Tripp Telesco that will be the x-factor. Last season the Maroons faltered late losing three of their last fi ve games. It has been a long time since Ridgewood has had a successful season and this could be a turn in the right direction.

WallingtonLast year, Wallington stunned every-one by going 11-1 and winning the North 1, Group 1 championship. But most of the players that led Walling-ton to a state title are gone, leaving a new, inexperienced team search-ing for their identity. But head coach Barry Blauvelt is steadily building a winning program at Wallington. Sev-eral players have been working hard all off-season, taking part in summer workouts and training unlike past teams. If Wallington can come close to repeating last year’s performance than they will earn the respect of the entire North Jersey football scene.

Seton Hall PrepLast season Seton Hall Prep met stiff competition in the state play-offs, ending an undefeated season with a diffi cult 60-17 loss to Bergen Catholic. But this season with a slew of returning starters and upcoming juniors, the Pirates have the ability to make another run. They could be a spoiler late in the season.

COLLEGE PREPARATION

editor@spoeditor@sportsfi tnesswellness.com page 24

SPORTS • FITNESS • WELLNESS SPO

By Tim SohnNJSports recently caught up with Robert “Chuck” Schnabel, Psy.D., to discuss the ways freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and senior

athletes in high school can best prepare for college.Schnabel launched his business, Raising Confi dence Skills LLC in 1990. He previously served as a teacher and high school base-

ball and basketball coach at St. Patrick and Cresskill high schools. Schnabel also was a college baseball coach at Seton Hall Uni-versity, a basketball coach at Montclair State, and a professional baseball scout for the Philadelphia Phillies. Schnabel works with athletes to solve individual and family problems to help maximize performance in competition. To fi nd out more information, visit www.raisingconfi denceskills.com.

Q: What can incoming freshmen who want to be-come college athletes do to prepare themselves early on?A: Incoming freshmen should become aware, as a starting point, of colleges in their home state and adjoining states, whether they are state-run or private colleges, and their basic direction in terms of education. Freshmen should be encouraged to “dream a little” in terms of choices. This will inevitably happen, so it’s better to do this sooner than later. Everyone is not a major col-lege prospect. As a matter of fact, very few athletes eventu-ally reach major college ros-ters. It takes time for some athletes to adjust to this, and if they can accomplish this as freshmen, all the better. This should be handled with little pressure, but with an eye to the future. Physically, the athlete should be engaged in a legitimate weight train-ing program, supervised by school personnel or a private

entity, and care should be tak-en to determine competency of these individuals. Care should be taken to monitor these programs in terms of overall health, relevance to the sport, student interest, and especially cost. If engaged in only one high school sport, the same care should be applied to out of season competition. Q: How can sophomores best ready themselves in hopes of playing college sports?A: Sophomore year brings with it more responsibility. High school academic courses should be planned with an eye toward the future in terms of personal goals and N.C.A.A. academic regulations. College searches should now be more introspective in terms of out-of-state school locations, academ-ic requirements and athletic programs. If possible, families may include informal visits to colleges to enhance their pos-sible choices. Off-season times are usually best for the athlete to make these visits. The same approach to weight training

and out-of-season competition holds as per the previous sea-son. A more competitive ap-proach to competition may be in the best interests of the ath-lete, if not presently already.

Q: Junior year must be a busy year in preparation for college, right?A: Junior year is where most of the real work for college selec-tion is accomplished. Athletes are allowed to email college coaches to inform them of their interests and qualifi cations and should do so. Most recruiting research is done by colleges at this time, so it is prudent to be on their “list of possible re-cruits” while they are formulat-ing such lists. Emails should in-clude biographical information, academic information, and athletic information pertinent to the recruitment. Athletes should be as concise as pos-sible in early communications. College coaches get a lot of these emails, so athletes should prepare them properly. The ath-letes, themselves, should make up the email, with family guid-

ance and approval. It means more to college coaches than if a parent composes the email. Above all, N.C.A.A. reg-ulations need to be researched and addressed, so several trips to the N.C.A.A. website will be benefi cial searches.

Q: What is the “showcase and showcase” competition concept, and what does it mean for seniors?A: Many different opinions exist on the concept of the “showcase and showcase competition” concept, usually meant for rising seniors. Each of these options presented to the athlete’s family should be evaluated on the basis of rel-evance to family goals, priori-tizing on the basis of potential usefulness to achieve family goals and, of course, keeping costs in mind. The fi rst week of the senior year, the athlete should walk into his Guidance Offi ce and request an application for the N.C.A.A. Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse is an N.C.A.A. function that evaluates the

athlete’s academic record in order to determine if he/she may, in fact, be able to be recruited by an N.C.A.A. col-lege. This should be done as soon as possible. N.C.A.A. schools may not recruit an athlete unless he or she is vali-dated by the Clearinghouse. Details are available at www.

ncaa.org. As soon as athletes and their families have deter-mined where they wish to ap-ply for admission, visits to the guidance counselor at school are needed in order to deter-mine procedure and to enact a time schedule with which to make timely applications. Since scholarships are few and far between — no matter if the athlete is in an athletic program where numerous athletes in their school receive scholarships — each athlete is judged individually. Therefore, the athlete needs to consider and reconsider their options and always keep their options open. If he or she is fortunate enough to be offered a schol-

arship, again the athlete needs to study the scholarship of-fered and determine if he/she should sign early or wait until the national signing date in the Spring. Information on this is also available at the N.C.A.A. website.

Q: What role does athletics play in the high school expe-rience?A: The role athletics plays in the high school experience is relative to what he or she is exposed to and how they re-spond to those experiences. In a school athletic program that is and has been successful in the past, it is a positive part of the overall school experience. In a school that is struggling for identity as an athletic program, or even as a positive school, it becomes more problematic. In any event, it is the athlete that makes the difference in terms of how they respond to chal-lenges. Motivated players play hard, no matter the circum-stances.

An athletic program can carry a very positive message to the rest of the school and the com-munity. High school sports are covered in the media much more than other school ac-tivities and academic events. That’s simply the way it works. Therefore, winning athletic pro-grams, or at the least, teams that compete with class and intensity, carry a positive mes-sage to those who may only have the athletic program with which to judge their school or community. Poor teams, with little admin-istrative support, enable nega-tive reactions in the school and community, resulting in a negative attitude by students, causing a further downturn in school athletic performance. Many young students look up to athletes and members of other school activities, hop-ing they can someday replace them with success. This gives athletics and other school pro-grams an important place in the overall school experience.

Q: How can medical profes-sionals be of help to aspir-ing athletes?A: It’s important to realize that in addition to positive results of high school athletics, coun-selors and people in the medi-cal fi eld are sometimes able to recognize an issue within competition that may not have presented itself in the rest of the student’s lifestyle. For ex-ample, an athlete who shows depth perception issues in terms of skills at practice or in competition, may be a candi-date for an examination by an opthamologist to determine any eyesight issues. This would hopefully also have a corresponding increas-ing positive result in academic success in the classroom. The same would be true of athletes who may experience signifi cant breathing problems after exertion, foot speed or quickness issues, or emo-tional issues based on ability or inability to react to athletic stressors.

Q: How important is self-worth for student ath-letes?A: A very important aspect of this entire experience is the anticipated realization of self-worth of the athlete. Some stu-dents realize this in the class-room, others in competition, still others in various other school-related activities. Even though a great deal of the re-sult of this experience is up to the student-athlete, positive surrounding elements make this an easier environment for the athlete to excel in.

COLLEGE RANKINGS:What They Mean and How to Interpret Them

August 18, 2011 — If your student is researching colleges, you’ve probably perused some of the well-known college rankings by U.S. News and World Report, Princeton Review and Forbes, to name a few. In fact, many students look to these popular lists fi rst to determine the stature and quality of their target schools. But George Vasiliades of the Springfi eld Huntington Learning Center urges students and their parents to understand what a ranking means before giving weight to it.

“Rankings are made up of a variety of factors, and while a ranked college may enjoy an elevated reputation, no student or parent

should form his or her opinion of a school based solely on a rank-ing,” says Vasiliades. “The right college for your student is the one that best meets his or her needs and will help him or her achieve his or her goals. If a school’s ranking helps you understand those attributes as compared to another institution, all the better, but remember that a ranking is just one piece of the puzzle.”

“When looking at the methodology behind a ranking, you can easily see if those criteria match your and your student’s priorities, and even pull out those components that matter to you most,” says Vasiliades. “The most important thing to consider when look-

FRANKLIN LAKES, NJ – We would like to thank ALL of our volun-teers and coaches that assisted in making Franklin Lakes’ First EVER Football Pep Rally a HUGE success last year! Without all of you, we never could have created such a special memory for the kids and a super fun time!

And of course, we will be continuing with our 2nd ANNUAL Football Pep Rally that will be held on Friday, September 23rd at Pulis Turf Field from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.

Due to some wonderful comments and ideas, we have upgraded the Pep Rally this year to include the following:

EVERY player, cheerleader and coach are offered a BBQ dinner as a celebration of their 2011 Football and Cheerleading Seasons! BBQ will include: burgers, hotdogs, tomato and cucumber salad, watermelon and drinks!

AND, for other family members, you too, can join in the BBQ for a nominal fee of $8 per person. All forms and monies MUST be submit-ted to me by no later than September 16th.

We have also added some exciting activities to the rally including Zumba and Parisis Speed Training; talented face/arm painting artists, and we will keep our fun tattoo station, obstacle course and of course the DJ to keep our evening moving along!

A BIG thank you must go out to The Franklin Lakes Youth and Rec-reation Foundation (FLYRF) and The Eagles Nest for sponsoring our FUN event this year, which has allowed us to add all of these wonderful additions! For more information please email [email protected].

al and national rowing competi-tions on Overpeck Lake as well as community rowing programs kayak, canoe and dragon boat racing events.

The Trustees of New York Row-ing hope that the planned race-course will signifi cantly reduce travel time and expenses for the thousands of junior, collegiate and club rowers living and working in Tri-State area. The Trustees also hope to increase the national and international profi le of rowing by accessing the media companies located in New York City. Phase Two of New York Rowing’s devel-opment plan is already underway with designs being prepared for

both the new property and the planned racecourse. New York Rowing is hoping to host its fi rst regatta on Overpeck Lake in the Spring of 2012.

New York Rowing is a 501(c)(3) not for profi t corporation which is dedicated to promoting the sport of rowing and has been doing so since being founded by rowers in 1866. Today it fulfi lls its mission by introducing young people to rowing through composite, community, adaptive and school based programs. We also facili-tate collegiate and adult rowing programs, all of which help sup-port and foster our youth pro-grams. New York Rowing is com-

mitted to the Tri-State rowing community (as defi ned by the U.S. Offi ce of Management and Budget) which has a population of over 18 million people as of the 2010 census. The Tri-State area is therefore the home of approximately 1 in 16 Ameri-cans and where the modern sport of rowing started in the United States.

For more information, about the Overpeck Lake Training and Regatta center or joining New York Rowing junior and adult programs please contact Re-becca Lam, Administrative Di-rector at rebecca@nyrowing.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK JULY 18, 2011 — The Brud-erer Corporation of Ridgefi eld Park, New Jersey has donated 2.36 acres of land on Overpeck Lake to the New York Rowing Association (New York Row-ing) for the establishment of the Overpeck Lake Training and Regatta Center. The Brud-erer Corporation’s in-kind dona-tion was recently appraised at $960,000 and completes Phase One of the New York Rowing’s long standing plans to establish a high caliber fair water training and regatta center in the Tri-State area.

Overpeck Lake, unlike many other rowing venues, is not in a remote location and is accessible by several major highways, airports and mass transportation facilities. The lake is approximately a 10 -15 minute drive from either the George Washington Bridge or the Lincoln Tunnel as well as a few minutes away from the Meadowlands Sports Complex. Overpeck Lake is a man-made body of water sheltered on all sides by gently sloping hills and adjacent to the newly renovated ($110 million) Overpeck Creek County Park. The park provides excellent unobstructed start to fi nish sight lines of the planned racecourse. The planned fi ve lane racecourse will be straight and fair with average water depths in excess of 2 meters. New York Rowing plans to use its new property to host region-

Garret Mountain is a legendary cross country course and has been the site for hundreds of league, county and state championship races for over 50 years. It’s popular for its wide open start and brutal .5 mile hill at the end of the race. The Ultimate Run was the fi rst event of its kind to be run there.

At 8:00 AM sharp the men’s heat took off into the trails of Garret Mountain. Ten minutes later the women’s heat began. All 111 par-ticipants in ages ranging from 14 years to 50 pushed themselves to their limits and all had a fun day!

The race was a challenge for some but everyone succeeded and made it to the fi nish line. Andrew Nashed, 18 and Danny O’Keefe, 26 battled it out for fi rst place in the men’s heat. A win for fi rst place by three seconds was achieved by

took part in the very fi rst prep race at Garret Mountain, West Pa-terson, New Jersey.

The Ultimate Run was a two mile race that required you to scale a 6 foot wall, navigate through 50 old car tires, crawl through tubes and splash through a mud slide. This idea of a prep race was introduced by Brad Vaccaro, owner and direc-tor of the Sports Conditioning In-stitute in Oakland, New Jersey. If anyone was thinking about chal-lenging themselves in some of the other extreme mud races like the “Tough Mudder”, the Ultimate Run is a great prep race to see if you have what it takes.

The race had an uplifting fam-ily friendly environment that even had a Mini Mudders race for chil-dren 4-12 years old. The Ultimate Run wants the entire family to be a part of this event. Not only
