August 2016
Dear NIRC Members,
As we look forward to a new school year, it is a time for new beginnings. For some
educators, it may mean the same grade level but new students. Some of you may be
changing grades, schools or districts. Some are starting as a new teacher, a truly new
beginning. It is an exciting time as we prepare for our year to start and begin again
touching the lives of so many students.
It is exciting as this is a new beginning for me as well as I embark on my new role in NIRC. I
have been learning and continue to learn about the wonderful ways that IRC and our
own local council help provide literacy support in so many ways. Throughout this year
keep checking our website and visit our Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest links to
see how your membership impacts our ability to plant literacy. This past year your
membership provided professional development to educators through our Fall
Conference. Additionally, it provided books to Neighbor’s House in DeKalb through the
Barnes & Noble Holiday Book Drive. Through Project Read it provided books and
bookcases for every child that moved into a Habitat for Humanity Home in our area. NIRC
also sponsored membership appreciation events, an Illinois Reads event at the Rockford
City Market and gave grants for teachers to use in their classrooms. Thank you for
continuing to help through your membership to give back in so many ways as we reach
out and continue to plant the seed of literacy in our council counties.
NIRC is pleased to have Candace Fleming and Sally Walker as our featured keynote
speakers for our September 15, 2016 Fall Conference at Kishwaukee College in Malta,
Illinois. You won’t want to miss this enlightening event which will have a special focus on
nonfiction. So be sure and reserve your spot for . . . “Hook, Hold and Haunt: Writing Great
Nonfiction with Kids” by Candace Fleming and “Scribble, Worms and Burned Thumbs:
Making Research Fun for Kids” by Sally Walker. Registration is now open and the form is on
the website. We will also be sending flyers to your schools, so please get the word out. We
do keep the cost of the conference low, and if you are a member it is at a reduced rate.
Finally, we will be having a Brushes, Books and Beverages membership appreciation event
at two locations, Sycamore and Rockford in October. Stay tuned for more information to
sign up for this very fun night. Space will be limited.
I am very excited to begin my year in my new role and am very fortunate to serve with
dedicated board members. I would encourage all members to consider becoming even
more involved with NIRC. We have many opportunities for members to serve. Please
contact any of our board members if you have questions or want to be more involved
with NIRC. Have a great year of new beginnings!

PROJECT READ This is a busy summer and fall for homes being built by Habitat for Humanity in our council area. There are a total of 9 Habitat Homes that we will be providing books and bookcases for the children. A special thank you to the members of Early Act at North Grove Elementary in Sycamore, IL for building bookcases for our Habitat for Humanity homes in the council counties outside of Rockford. Thank you also North Grove for donating books through their book fair for the children receiving the bookcases. Additionally, thank you to the students of the Marshall Montessori school of Rockford for building bookcases for the Rockford Habitat for Humanity homes. It is wonderful to have our students give back to others in our community in such a personal way. It’s another great example of planting literacy in our communities. If you are interested in helping with Project Read or would like more information, contact [email protected].
