From the Pastor August 12, 2012
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time
“The Jews murmured, ‘Is not Jesus the son of Joseph and Mary? How can he say he has come down from heaven?’ And Jesus said. ‘I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; I
am the living bread that came down from heaven, whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world." [See John 6:41-51]
To help open the treasures of the revised Roman Missal, I’m giving a weekly reflection on the three theological deep and beautiful Mass orations of that day, gleaned from the book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts.
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Collect
Almighty ever-living God, whom, taught by the Holy Spirit, we dare to call our Father, bring,
we pray, to perfection in our hearts the spirit of adoption as your sons and daughters,
that we may merit to enter into the inheritance which you have promised.
Tender Affection/Reverent Awe. Some have difficulty relating to God as ‘Father’ due to bad experiences with their earthly ‘Dad’ [or ‘Abba’ as the Bible calls God!] for no human fathers are perfect - and neither are their children! Some had absentee or weak fathers; some aged fathers now act like little children; all must pray for the ability to treat them with loving respect, even if it is not deserved. But not so with God!
Our Heavenly Father IS perfect and knows what is best for us. And as this Collect states, we must pray for the grace to equally: rest in our Father’s tender, affectionate embrace; respect Him with reverent awe; and obey His will - not out of fear, but out of love! This sort of maturity in faith is something we must work at constantly. For as an ‘adult’ in faith, we can better appreciate how our promised inheritance is NOT something we earn and is certainly NOT something we deserve! It is a grace or gift from a loving Father to His children, who should always treat Him with the most tender, grateful affection - and the most respectful, reverent awe!
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Prayer over the Offerings
Be pleased, O Lord, to accept the offerings of your Church, for in your mercy you have given them
to be offered - and by your power you transform them into the mystery of our salvation.
Is the Gift or Gift-Giver More Important? This question seems to be the crux of this Prayer over the Offerings. We may be quick to say that our gifts ‘represent’ those who worked so hard to provide them. But the truth is: God is the giver of every good gift; God provides the gifts we offer, which He accepts and returns to us! As the Priest’s normally inaudible prayers state: we first ‘receive’ the gifts of bread and wine FROM God before we offer them TO God! The fruit of our labors - and our very selves - are also God’s gifts, which we offer to Him, which God then uses to build up His Kingdom on earth!
When we give someone a gift, we take the way they take and use our gift personally. When they express thanks and put it to good use, we are filled with joy; when they take it for granted, misuse or discard the gift, we are hurt. Might God have the same range of reactions to the way we take and use His many gifts?
19th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Prayer after Communion
May the communion in your Sacrament that we have consumed, save us, O Lord, and confirm us in the light of your truth.
The Sacrament of Sacraments. While this prayer uses the singular ‘Sacrament,’ it refers to all the mysteries of Christ, which are summed up in the Eucharist. The Sacraments enable us to get a ‘foot’ into heaven’s door; they are windows that let heavenly grace shine upon us; they give the true meaning or God’s ‘Truth’ about every aspect of human life. In a way, the Sacraments ‘spiritualize’ our bodily growth: Baptism/birth; Confirmation/maturity; Eucharist/nourishment; Reconciliation/failure; Matrimony/family life; Holy Orders/structure; and Anointing/sickness and death. God has truly covered all the bases!
Each time we ‘consume the Sacrament’ we are actually being consumed by - or drawn into - the life, death and Resurrection of Christ. When we share in Holy Communion, we become a part of Christ: our minds can become more attuned to His mind, our heart to His heart, our actions to His actions and our love to His love! Again, not by magic, but by becoming what - or Who - we receive in this Great Sacrament at holy Mass!
With my love and prayers,
Reverend Michael J. Kreder
FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION
of the
BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
Masses for this
Holyday of Obligation are: Tuesday, August 14th
5:00 p.m.
Wednesday, August 15th
7:00 - 8:30 a.m. -
12:00 noon & 7:00 p.m.
“Courageous are those who hear the Word of God, and keep it.”
Mary answered her call (delivered by the angel Gabriel) to be the
Mother of God with courage. She stood at the cross with
courage. We celebrate her opening the way for us. We must
follow with courage, even to paradise. Mary is also the
courageous gathering of God’s people, our Holy Mother Church.
Listen to the source of our courage: “Victory, power, and empire
forever, have been won, and all authority for the Christ.” Listen
and have the courage to respond!
REMEMBER TO WEAR SOMETHING BLUE!
REMEMBER YOUR PARISHSome people wait until the end of summer to put in a ‘catch-up’
envelope for the Sundays they might have been away. The “Way
of Stewardship” is NOT to ‘catch up’ after everything has been
used for vacation but to give from the “first fruits.” Why not
consider “catching up” before you leave for vacation as an act
of gratitude to God for all you have been given.
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
Anyone interested in becoming a fully initiated Roman
Catholic - one who has received Baptism, Confirmation and
First Eucharist - the RCIA is for you! The RCIA is ideally for non-

baptized Protestants who wish to become Catholic. It is also
for adult Catholics who never received First Eucharist and/or
Confirmation. Please share this invite with anyone who might
be interested. For further information call Mary Lanni,
coordinator at [201] 933-1056. To “sign up” for this year’s
session, leave your name and evening phone number at the

DON'T JUST EAT AND RUN!
Last weekend we heard the second of five segments of
the 'Bread of Life Discourse' from Saint John's Gospel. To
help reaffirm our belief in our Lord's Real Presence in the
Eucharist, we ended Mass with a hymn of praise for the
Eucharist, by kneeling and singing "O Sacrament Most
Holy" after which we had an instrumental recessional. A
number of people expressed thanks for this simple spiritual
exercise which we will continue on August 19 and 26. [On
Labor Day we traditionally sing a hymn of petition for all
travelers and those away from home for school.] This
weekend we will sing [or sang] if you are reading this after
Mass!] 2 verses of the Latin hymn "Tantum Ergo" followed
by the same two verses of this Eucharistic hymn in English.
The next two weeks' hymns have not been chosen.
Our church is usually open every day from 6:30 am until
5:30 pm; if the church doors are locked, try the daily Mass
chapel door. So whenever possible, stop in 'make a visit' to
the Blessed Sacrament, walk the Stations of the Cross, light
a candle, or just spend some quality time with the Lord.
May our deepening reverence help more people to realize
its importance!
MEMORIAL WALL
Stop by and vist our Memorial Wall in Church by the Blessed
Sacrament Tabernacle. Ten phtographs of those most recently
buried from Saint Mary are hung on the wall. Families can
provide the undertaker with the photo which they will scan and
email us or a picture can be dropped off at Saint Mary. Only
those buried from Saint Mary are displayed on the wall. These
photos will be used in a collage and powerpoint during our Mass
of Remembrance on Saturday, November 3rd at 5:00 p.m.
Kindly pray for the peaceful repose of their souls and ask the
intercession of our Blessed Mother or light a candle to remember
these and all our deceased parishioners. Their names are now
recorded in our Book of Remembrance, which goes back to our
parish's inception in 1908.
