We look forward to getting to know your family throughout the year! Lunar New Year is a significant time for our host country Korea where it is known as Seollal and in China as Chinese New Year . This week we enjoyed an interactive presentation about Seollal from our Korean parents. Today, we had the opportunity to learn about the Chinese Spring Festival, enjoyed a shadow puppet story and made lanterns with our Chinese parents. We are thankful for the privilege of interacting with the rich cultures within the NIK community . Kindness and caring is something we value and practice daily at NIK. Each year, we also have a week where we focus on ways to show kindness and our hopes of kindness for our world. Kindness week will be held during the week of February 11-15th and will involve everyone at NIK. Student-led conferences will be held on February 28th . This is a time when students will lead discussions ,reflect ,evaluate and share with their parent/s on his/her growth, challenges and achievements. There will be no school on the student-led conference day for students. Students and parent/s will come for their scheduled time and your child will return home with the parent/s. A student-led conference schedule sign-up will be sent home shortly. Happy Seollal and Chinese New Year to all our friends! Mrs Cathy Brown Principal/PYPC www.nikseoul.org NIK News

Pre K 2 students have been engaged in noticing the changing world around them. The children have noticed things like Christmas and New Year symbols or decorations, the cold weather, and sometimes it snows. As winter is all around us the students decided that they would like to make snowmen. They carefully choose their own materials to make a face , add ear muffs and some buttons including a variety of shapes for their snowman. Our students regularly have the opportunity to use a range of tools for mark-making because literacy and numeracy is also an important part of our everyday world.

Pre K 3 students continue to make connections with stories and use their imagination to express themselves by retelling or creating their own stories through dramatic play, drawings, drama and art. Students daily learning experiences also include fine and gross motor skills activities. These activities help the students to develop their focus for longer periods of time, social skills, language skills and are wonderful for developing their pre-reading and writing skills.

LEARNING THROUGH THE PYP

Pre K 4 students have been inquiring into the ways that cultures can be expressed through the arts. They began by researching about their own family’s culture and made connections with the cultural symbols represented at traditional celebrations. The students have done a wonderful job creating artwork like Korean ink painting, Chinese paper cutting and various traditional music. Our identity is strengthened through connection to our culture and a strong identity is significantly important in the early years.

Kindergarten have been inquiring into How We Organize Ourselves through transportation systems. During the UOI the students collaborated and choose to create an airport transportation system. The student’s worked together to create systems including a check-in area, a plane and a menu for flights. The students have applied their phonic knowledge and writing skills to also make passports for their trips. The students went on to create a road system and included systems like road signs, traffic lights, parking and crossings.

Welcome back parents! We hope everyone had a great winter break. We’re excited to jump back in! A quick recap of before the break; for the first time at NIK, some parents performed for the children and audience in a PTA Christmas play, and had a lot of fun doing so. We have such a great team of parents !

We’ve already begun planning our annual Spring Fair and had our first meeting on the 28th of January. We had a great turnout and are grateful for the overwhelming support we have from parents. Our next Spring Fair meeting is on the 20th of February at 11am, right after the ‘Like A Girl’ workshop, which is geared towards both boys and girls and will be held in the gym by none other than our very own, Mrs. Cathy Brown

Our next PTA meeting will be on the 21st of February at 9:15am and we hope we’ll have a great turnout as we will also be having brunch at Brera straight after our meeting starting at 11:15 am . *Please wear red and join us!

As always, we hope you’re able to join us at our meetings for it is a great way to connect with other parents, brainstorm new ideas and get an idea as to what goes on behind the scenes.

Warm regards, Grace Cruz NIK PTA President
