Dear Nightingale Families:

How time flies. We are now already into November. The school has been alive with numerous

At this time, students are very busy with a wide variety of assignments. If you have an opportunity

take a look at the displays and bulletin boards around the school. The work produced by the

HUB Bike Training Course As part of the ongoing initiative to promote active transportation, Divisions 2 and 3 participated in a

HUB sponsored bike training course. Students learned rules of the road and how to be safe when

biking in a city. During the first week of October, the school was encouraged to "wheel to school."

PAC was out in full force rewarding active travelers, and HANK the HAWK even flew in for a visit!

Fundraising for SEVA - Sweat for Sight Students in Division 2 and 3 organized a school wide fundraiser for SEVA Canada. With help from the

parent community we raised over $450! All proceeds go to providing eye-sight saving surgeries in the

developing world. Students in all divisions then participated in SWEAT4SIGHT on national sight day,

October 11th.

Cross Country Cross Country Running has come to an end and

we are very proud of our Nightingale runners! We

had a team of 25 enthusiastic runners from

Grades 1-4. We celebrated the end of the season

with the big district meet at Trout Lake on a

beautiful day with hundreds of students from all

over Vancouver! The students have shown great

sportsmanship and team spirit. A big thanks to

Thomas, Ms. Gill, and Ms. Shan for coaching!

Free Transit Week During the first week of October TransLink offered free transit to public school children to explore the

city. Ms. Wong and Mr. Canning used the opportunity to go to Stanley Park. Some of the highlights

of our trip were: a scavenger hunt in a wooded area next to the picnic grounds, a hike along the

seawall to Beaver Creek, a hike through the forest to Beaver lake where we will release salmon later

this year and taking in the sweet scent of nature. It was truly a wonderful day in the park but for some

the most hilarious part of the return trip was when the voice of Vancouver actor Seth Rogen came

over the PA system encouraging everyone to move to the back of the bus because “that’s where all

the cool kids hang out.” We were in the back and thought that was quite funny. Ms. Wong and Mr.

Canning would like to thank the transit drivers of the Stanley Park Number 19 route. Stanley Park

was a popular destination for school groups on the free transit week. We hope you enjoy some of the

photos.

School Garden – Mason Bees/Sunflowers The students from Mr. Canning class, along with the assistance of Ms. B and Jacob Villanueva,

undertook two big jobs in our school garden. In our garden you may have noticed a 2x6 board

mounted to the fence post with a box at the top. From a distance it may look like a bird house but in

fact it is a mason bee house with multiple nesting tunnels. In the spring we put out 10 mason bees,

seven females and three males. After pollinating our apple tree, and neighbouring trees and flowers,

our mason bees laid eggs in the nesting tunnels. These eggs developed into adult mason bees over

the summer inside a cocoon. The students harvested the cocoons washed them in water and looked

at them under a microscope. From our original 10 bees we successfully harvested 45 new females

and 25 males. These cocoons are currently overwintering in the fridge for release next spring.

Our other big job was harvesting our school sunflower seeds for replanting next spring. We will have

more than enough for our school garden and plenty for sharing. We hope you enjoy the photos.

The priority registration period for Kindergarten opens on Thursday November 1st and closes at 4 pm on Thursdary January 31st. Students who submit an application within this priority period will be accommodated before late applicants. Applying for Kindergarten is a 2-Step process: Step 1: Completion of an online application form.
