It is a timely reminder as the weather warms up that we all need to slip, slop, slap. What is equally as important is that the students drink water throughout the day. swimming carnival. Although the attendance was down at the swimming

carnival, the students enjoyed a day where participation and support for all

Year 7 News

In English, students completed their unit of work on Ned Kelly with a whole-class mock trial where the students played the roles of prosecution, defence and jury to determine whether Ned Kelly was innocent or guilty. In Maths, students have been studying fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio. In Humanities, students have been working on an assessment task that requires them to produce an information pamphlet on a topic studied this term. Students have chosen to investigate such things as the Australian Consumer Law, consumer scams and the types of bank interest. In Science, students have spent the last three weeks completing an individual investigation into a group of organisms (plants, animals or fungi) of their choice. They have researched, surveyed, classified, described and produced

dichotomous keys for their organisms.

Year 8 News

Year 9 News

In Year 9 Business and Economics this term, a small group of students participated in the $20 Boss program. The National Australia Bank loaned $20 to each student who applied and they can then use this to run a small business for the term. Georgia Schofield, Cayl Dela Pena and Joseph Haritos ran a very successful stall selling

Many of our year 9 students participated in a range of activities such as; camp, The Beat, Lego League, Tournament of Minds, Robotics, Nightcliff’s Got Talent to name a few. It has been a busy term with transition visits from a range of senior schools and enrolments now need to be completed and returned to the front office or the chosen senior school. Term 4 is already beginning to look busy with VET continuing, the end of year awards ceremony and our graduation dinner on 6

th Dec, 2017 at Tracy Village Social and Sports Club. Payment towards the graduation dinner

can be made during the term. I trust you all have a safe and pleasant break.

In Media this term we have been focussed on photography and how images can tell stories. Each student looked at a different photographic subject ranging from life at school, flowers and even toy cars. We experimented on the effects of different coloured light and shadows on smaller objects. The photos were taken by: Tiarnee, Aiza, James and Miss Alm.

Year 8 have been working hard to finish all of their assignments before the end of term. In English, students have been working on their persuasive essay and debating over whether or not parents should be monitoring their teenager’s internet usage. In Humanities, the students have been completing an investigation on Australian business issues and concerns. For example, the classification of movies and video games, online scams and the mining booms. In Maths, they have been busy working on linear equations, translation, volume, rotation, refection and reduction. Finally in Science, students have been using sustainable housing kits to complete practicals.

Thank you to all of the parents/guardians who attended parent teacher interviews. It was a productive evening and a pleasure to meet you all. Finally, well done to all

Interschool Chess Competition An Interschool Chess Competition was held at Darwin Middle School in Week 9 of Term 2 (apologies that the report on this is so late!). Participating schools were Nightcliff Middle School, Darwin Middle School and The Essington School. Six NMS students participated; Jacob Bond, Liam Harwood, Manoj Rajkumar, Tiger Tucker, Julius Fowlestone and Grifith Moses. All students did their best and played great games, but it was Tiger and Manoj that made it through to the knockout round. Tiger was unfortunately knocked out in the first game, but Manoj managed to play his way, game after game, into the final. After a nerve-wracking final against a very talented Essington student, Manoj managed to prevail and win the game. Congratulations Manoj, we are all very proud of you! All students demonstrated exemplary behaviour on the day and were model representatives for NMS.

to visit historical sites significant in World War I. Joseph is currently a shortlisted

candidate and will hopefully be jetting off to France next year! His entry focussed

on the people of Villiers-Bretonneau, a small French town that was overrun by the

Clontarf

We would like to also take the opportunity to welcome Aiden Yelland to our Clontarf team here at Nightcliff Middle School. Aiden has recently arrived from Melbourne and will replace Brad who recently moved to Casuarina Secondary College. Aiden comes from a teaching background and began with us at the start of week 8.

Farewell Brad, Welcome Aiden

Lunch Time Basketball Tournament

Firstly, Clontarf would like to thank everyone for being involved in the inaugural lunch time basketball tournament. The tournament consisted of twelve teams, was a three player a side format, and played over an eight week block. A spe-cial mention must go out to the members of team Stingrays who lifted the trophy after some stellar performances throughout. Members of the highest finishing two teams then merged together to play against NMS staff. Students flocked to the school gym to watch this highly anticipated event. They watched a few staff members wind back the clock and put their skills on display. Everyone would agree the atmosphere was electric, with the final result being a draw at 17 all. Having to decide who would take home the trophy, staff or students — they had a paper, scissors, rock play off. The trophy went to the staff! Looking forward to another round of lunch time basketball next term.

The BEAT Well done to the talented Nightcliff

Dance Team for their beautiful perfor-mance at the Beat production.

Term 3 Week 10 2017

Nightcliff’s Got Talent Show On Wednesday of week 10 we held the finals of Nightcliff's Got Talent, our first ever whole school talent show! Across Term 3, students participated in auditions for teacher judges and rehearsed for a month in the lead up to the finals. There were 4 finalists who performed from across grades 7 to 9:

1. Isaac Smalley, who performed an original song; 2. Amelia and Bodhi, who sang a duet; 3. The Flipping Ninjas who performed an acrobatics routine; 4. The Vibes rock band performing a pop song.

There was also a surprise mystery performance from the Fully Sick Band- a band made entirely of teachers!! (Who we have heard were the people’s choice award winners…) Congratulations to Isaac for winning the Nightcliff’s Got Talent competition, and Amelia and Bodhi for being runners up. We look forward to seeing even more performers auditioning next term!

Well done to the choir for their amazing

performance. Looking forward to singing again

next year.

Multiplication by 11 is easy! To multiply by a 2-digit number add the two digits and place the sum in between!

25 x 11 = 275 31 x 11 = 341

57 x 11 = 627 <-- you need to carry the 1! What about a 3-digit number? Can you figure out what's going on here?

253 x 11 = 2783 117 x 11 = 1287 532 x 11 = 5852 267 x 11=2937

MATHS CORNER

MULTIPLICATION BY 11

Presentation Suggestions:

Do examples! What you notice is that multiplication by 11 can be

done quickly with numbers of any length by starting with the first and

last digits (they remain the same, unless there is a carry) and then

inserting the sums of adjacent pairs of digits sequentially in between.

For example, 253 x 11 begins with a 2 (like 253 does), then the next

digit is 2+5=7, the next digit is 5+3=8, and the last digit is 3 (like 253

has). So the product is 2783. Remember to carry if necessary. So

267 x 11 starts with a 2 (like 267 does), the next digit is 2+6=8, the

next digit is 6+7=13 (oops! carry the 1 back to the previous digit,

leaving a 3 in this place), then the last digit is 7 (just like 267 has).

Thus the product is 2937.
