E X E R C I S EL IST MAKING: 45 M INUTES
Pain is only necessary because our repressed emotions are being held
down. This holdingdown process, perpetrated by our loving yet
misguided brains who think they are protecting us, can be turned
around with the simple act of giving our feelings a voice.
There are many things which trigger us to feel these unpleasant
emotions which our brains would prefer us not to feel. Sometimes these
events are negative, like a hurtful fight with a dear friend. Sometimes
these events are positive in nature, like the birth of a child, but might still
elicit conflicting emotions because although we are overjoyed, we are
scared and resentful as well. These feelings are NORMAL! Everyone has
them, but when we go about our busy lives and ignore them or push
them away, our brains get the signal within our mind/body systems that
there is danger afoot, and the pain cycle is ignited.
Making these lists is the first step in fleshing out our life events and
personality traits. In turn, we can discover our repressed emotions, and
give them a voice. When we look at our lives, both our histories and our
current day, there are many areas in which we feel both joy and anger,
yet the anger is denied or ignored. It simply needs to come out and see
the light of day! Don’t worry, it will not hurt you or make you more
upset. It may sting in the moment, but once you vent properly, you will
be shocked and amazed and relieved at how easily you can accept your
feelings and move on.

E X E R C I S EL IST MAKING
The person or situation which has been stewing inside you becomes
suddenly and remarkably more tolerable, and even enjoyable! Just trust me.
Make your lists under each heading, in a bulleted fashion. Each bullet will
mean something to you, but no one else needs to get it. This makes it much
easier to punch out. I’ve reprinted my original example from The Meaning
of Truth below to give you a concrete benchmark. Have at it, with
openness and willingness and hope. Print out as many of the blank
listmaking forms provided as necessary to include everything you can
think of. You can do this. Reach into your life, and put the bullets down on
paper. You’re one step closer to a painfree life.
