Dear Friends,
National President's Message
An eventful year has gone by so swiftly since the time you have vested the new
leadership team with the responsibility of sustaining the collective journey. On our
behalf, I had defined that our way forward would be built on the pillars of
governance, engagement and network. The focus was to endeavor to harbinger
change on one hand, while giving a strong execution edge at the grass root level to enable institution building and
enhancing equity of our Network, on the other. Another year has been added to the rich annals of NHRDN's
history, which has completed two and half decades.
In line with our commitment of reaching out to all members and enhancing transparency, we have worked towards
capturing our way of life in a report that serves both as a year in review and a brief compendium of what our
Network represents. This Annual Report is an attempt to capture the ethos of the Network and the various
activities undertaken over the past year in furtherance of the overall mission and agenda. As a Network we have
grown both my membership and even more so in our overall range of initiatives that have clearly focused on
spreading the HRD movement in the country.
We have beckoned change with the spirit to renew and refresh and lend contemporary relevance to our Network.
Our new logo, heartily welcomed and accepted by our members, was a positive move in the intended direction.
Our newsletter too is undergoing a refresh mode. In line with strengthening overall governance, our bye-laws too,
which are two and half decades old, may be revisited to help for us to be able to bring in the required dynamism
and ensure it is in vogue with our collective aspirations. Each one of these changes intends to strengthen our
foundations and cements our ability to create our way ahead.
A landmark event of the year has been our National Conference, which was held at Mumbai, with industry doyen
Anand Mahindra as the Conference Chairman. Our Mumbai Chapter President Rajeev Dubey, the host and
conference convener, deserves kudos for his remarkable leadership on delivering what has been widely
acclaimed as amongst the finest and memorable conferences that we have seen, graced by nearly a 1000
delegates. In the tradition of rotation of the national conference across the regions, the baton now passes on to
Delhi.
A key difference this year has been the strengthening the National Secretariat and the creation of a strong
framework of engagement through institutional vehicles that align and combine seamlessly with what the
Chapters create at the local level. For instance the Learning Centre, created at the national level, has worked
with the chapters and has already provided intensive day long training to nearly 1000 HR professionals by senior
HR leaders who volunteered to be faculty to create the next generation. We have also been able to reach nearly
2000 members through Webinars held on vital topics of importance. The website is now a dynamic virtual mirror of
our Network bringing us all closer. Our Journal and Newsletter continue to be important institutional vehicles.
We have also been immensely saddened by the unexpected departures of eminent stalwarts such as Dr Udai
Pareekh, former National President of NHRDN and one of the founding members, Dr CS Venkataratnam, Dr CK
Prahlad, Mr Ranjan Acharya and Mr Jagdeep Khandpur. Their absence is felt deeply by all of us and the best

tribute we can pay to their memories is to continue contributing to the cause of human resources development in
the country.
As your office bearer, our roles are that of trustees and custodians to help preserve our rich traditions of the past,
and collectively pave the way for an exciting future that invites us. It has indeed been a blessing to have the
encouragement and proactive support of the eminent members of our Executive Board on the journey we have
embarked upon. The deep involvement of all the Board Members and active participation has ensured that the
deliberations are rich in their vein, encourage constructive dissent, pave way for collective and consensual action.
Members of the Board have often taken on additional responsibilities in task forces and committees to further the
objectives of the Network.
The presence of our former National President Aquil Busrai on our Board has enabled continuity of thought and
action, and his active participation has been enriching. Apart from the engaging deliberation in the Board, I have
also been able to lean heavily on a number of senior leaders who have always been gracious in sharing their
thoughts and insights. I am grateful indeed for the wholehearted support we have received in our endeavors.
Our dynamic National Secretary Pankaj Bansal, with his deep respect for the tradition of our Network and a strong
sense of commitment to the overall cause of our Network, has anchored this initiative of rendering the Annual
Report. Our Secretariat has been consciously strengthened this year and we have witnessed the tremendous
change that Mohit Gandhi, our Executive Director, and his team have brought about, by ceaselessly working
towards the overall agenda and delivering concrete outcomes.
I want to share my deep gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to each Member of our 8500 strong Network for your
active and keen participation across our 30 Chapters, anchored by our able Chapter Presidents and their teams.
We have grown to be a organization spread nationwide. To be able to reach out, connect, engage, understand
your expectations and learn from each one of you is a daunting task. Yet I take hope in the thought expressed by
Tennyson:
“We have but faith: we cannot know;
For knowledge is of things we see
And yet we trust it comes from thee,
A beam in darkness: let it grow.”
Your continuous involvement, proactive feedback, and enriching presence in the network wherever you are,
make us who we really are: an engaged Network furthering our collective spirit.

National HRD Network in its new avatar.
When the new team took over under the leadership of NS Rajan - we took on ourselves the goal of carrying on the rich legacy and bringing the new generation of HR professionals into the same fold. It was by no means an easy one because we had the history of high benchmarks set by our predecessors. The context was equally challenging for the following reasons:
- New expectations
- Absence of a full-fledged secretariat
- Low automation (in terms of member database etc.)
On the way we lost some HR Luminaries, torch bearers and Gurus including Dr. Udai Pareekh which was a big shock for the fraternity. We always leaned on them for counsel and guidance. Their work, their thoughts and their teaching will continue to guide our work and inspire us. We salute them for their contribution.
We leveraged the continuing volunteer spirit amongst the members and office bearers. This spirit enabled us to build an exciting roadmap focused on 'execution' as a theme and created a framework G-E-N (governance-engagement-network) which gave us an edge. We decided that every vehicle of NHRDN will have the following anchors and hallmarks:
- Self - sustaining
- Scalable
- Predictable
- Value to members and in line with our mission
I am very happy to report that over the last year, we have been able to create new benchmarks for the national body in terms of our financial performance with highest ever revenues, web portal as a one stop shop for HR professionals, Learning centers as a mechanism to share the knowledge in workshop mode, HR Compass for building the next level of competencies in HR Professionals and much more. You will read more in greater detail in the report. We could achieve all this due to the unconditional support extended by senior members of the HR community and the executive board members.
While I sign off, I would like to thank L. Prabhakar, our board member for extending great support in bringing out the annual report. I also would like to place on record and thank the team which made all this possible: Our 'Executive Director - Mohit Gandhi' and his team Anirudh (learning Center), Ankur (HR Talks Web initiative), Jasmine (HR Compass), Sunil (Membership Cell) and Mayan (Administration) deserves special mention for delivering very high standards. They have proved that excellence is a function of getting results despite limited resources and time because their aspirations outweighed our limitations!

It has been a real privilege to serve this august body as your Executive Director.
My sincere thanks to all of you who have helped me meld into this critical role to
accomplish the high expectations set for me and the Secretariat by our National
President.
I am also grateful to Mr Satyanarayana who has rendered his whole hearted support
and guidance during this transition.
Mr NS Rajan, National President, NHRDN has set challenging goals by outlining Mission and Agenda of NHRDN
in GEN (Governance, Engagement and Network) framework. Achieving the challenging outcome of such a
Mission necessitated the creation of a vibrant National Secretariat.
We have been able to establish the following verticals / vehicles and create a strong ecosystem to drive NHRDN
agenda through them. All these put together help strengthen the foundation for NHRDN.
I. The 'Learning Centre' and 'Meet a Mentor' initiatives to provide more value to our members.
II. The HR talks initiative to leverage the power of interactive web technologies.
III. Membership vertical to engage more and more HR Professionals.
IV. The HR Compass initiative to bridge the competency gap of HR professionals, and
V. The HRD Newsletter and Journal to build a better connect with NHRDN members.
Each vertical is a 'self- sustaining' vehicle, which serves the basis for augmenting the skills and competencies of
HR Professionals in a way that it enables HR to become a strategic partner of the organization in its true sense
and thereby creating NHRDN as the reference point for HR in India.
We stay committed to deliver concrete outcomes across the key institutional vehicles and build a strong
collaborative platform between the National Body and the Chapters.

Farewell to Mr. K Satyanarayana Former Executive Director, NHRDN
A personification of simplicity, strength of will, noble service, determination, and responsibility, Mr. Satyanarayana has been the Honorary Executive Director of NHRDN for over a decade. His contribution to the Network for those 10 years is enormous and gallant.
Mr. Satyanarayana has played a significant role in evolving NHRDN as a true national entity by bringing together members from across the country and engaging them with the various NHRDN events and activities through a compelling platform, the HRD Newsletter. He has managed with rigor and diligence the large 8000+ member database that served in good stead for HR Talks, when the Web2.0 initiative was launched.
In recognition of his efforts and commitment to the NHRDN cause, Mr. Satyanarayana has won awards, including the Best Personnel Manager Award from Hyderabad Management Association in 1997 & a Special Award from NHRDN in 1998.
There is a philanthropic side to Shri Satya that testifies his compassion and love for his fellow beings. He is instrumental behind building 1000 houses for the workers of Hyderabad Allwyn. He imparts value-based education to children in schools. He lives by Gandhian principles and is a firm believer of Swami Vivekananda's concept that “a nation is built in class room”. He is also a visiting faculty at the Vivekananda Institute of Human Excellence at Hyderabad.

Satya and NHRDN have travelled together for over two decades.
He led two national Conferences and managed the HQ often single
handedly.. We will remember him for his Gandhian Values, high
energy levels and dedication. At the Board meetings, it was great
seeing Satya in action. He used to sound a bit tough and in
retrospect we realise that actually it was his keenness for
compliance and Institution building. We will miss him

Dr. Udai Pareek
1925 - 2010
Prof. Udai Pareek, Management Guru and Doyen of HRD movement in the country, Chairman Academic Council, IILM Academy of Higher Learning, Jaipur; Governing Council Member, SID Rajasthan Chapter; former Professor Organizational Behaviour (L&T Chair), IIM(A), Distinguished Visiting Professor, IIHMR, Jaipur, Free-lance writer, researcher and consultant passed away on March 21, 2010.
Dr Udai Pareek was one of the founding fathers of the National HRD Network and
has also been the former National President during its early years. His close involvement, constant support and
good wishes have always been a source of strength for NHRDN.
Dr. Pareek was a great teacher, always willing to impart knowledge and lend advice. He was a visionary, a great
scholar and truly a wonderful human being.
At a very well attended Shradhanjali Sabha held on March 23, 2010 at Gandhi Bhawan, Rajasthan University
Campus, Jaipur he was paid rich tributes by several eminent personalities including his former associate Padma
Bhushan Prof. V.S. Vyas, N S Rajan, National President, NHRDN & M.L. Mehta, former Chief Secretary, Govt. of
Rajasthan. They said his departure is an irreparable loss for the world of management education. The only way
we can pay a rich tribute to him is by carrying forward the legacy he has left behind.
Dr. Udai Pareek An eternal spirit of India's HRD movement
Dr. Udai Pareek was a strong pillar of the Human Resource movement in the country. A leader, a pioneer, a man
whose strong persona and life inspired generations of HR professionals in India. We will nurture and cherish the legacy
Dr. Pareek leaves behind. May his soul rest in peace!

Dr. Pareek was the third National President of NHRDN. It was during his tenure the constitution was changed to make chapters autonomous and register themselves to progress and innovate. It was during MRR Nair and his tenures that NHRDN got a permanent house and address at Ahmedabad and the Academy of HRD was conceptualised. He worked for NHRDN tirelessly for several years in various capacities as Chairperson of NHRDN Awards committee and Search committees for various Presidents. His mind and support was there for NHRDN until his last days. He always aspired and worked to make NHRDN a model institution for all professional bodies and institutions He is role model for all those who intend to give selfless support to professional bodies and academic institutions. His research, scholarship and influence on the HRD, HRM, OD, OB fields is unparalleled and long lasting as he left over 60 books, writings, several students and teachers behind for those who wish to pursue these fields.

Dr. C S Venkata Ratnam
1950 - 2010
Dr. C.S. Venkata Ratnam, Director, International Management Institute, New Delhi
was also author of renowned research books like Employers Dilemma, Challenge
of Change: Dynamics of Labour Management Relations in India, Managing People,
etc. Specialized in HRM & IR, he also held numerous consulting assignments for
International Labour Organization, Asian Productivity Organization and
International Confederation of Free Trade Unions in various countries in Asia and
Europe.
He was also former Editor for Global Business Review (published by IMI and SAGE) and former Chairman,
Editorial Board, Consulting Ahead (published by Consultancy Development Centre). A certified trainer of ILO
Turin Centre on freedom of association and collective bargaining, he conducted programmes in Europe and Asia.
Dr Ratnam was a member of the HR and IR committees of FICCI, AIEO, SCOPE, CII, PHD Chamber of
Commerce and Industry. He served as a member of the study groups set up by Second National Commission on
Labour, Planning Commission, National Commission on Unorganized Sector Enterprises and MOU Committee
of Department of Public Enterprises, Government of India. He was also on the Board of a public sector company
(Government of India owned) and National HRD Network.
Dr. C K Prahalad
1941 - 2010
Dr. C K Prahalad was a globally known figure who was consulted by the top
management of many of the world's foremost companies. His research specialized
in corporate strategy and the role of top management in large, diversified,
multinational corporations.
Dr. Prahalad has been among top ten management thinkers in every major survey
for over ten years. Business Week said of him: "a brilliant teacher at the University
of Michigan, he may well be the most influential thinker on business strategy today."
He was a member of the Blue Ribbon Commission of the United Nations on Private Sector and Development. He
was the first recipient of the Lal Bahadur Shastri Award for contributions to Management and Public
Administration presented by the President of India in 2000. In 2009 he was conferred Padma Bhushan 'third in the
hierarchy of civilian awards' by the Government of India.

Mr. Jagdeep Khandpur
1959 - 2009
Mr. Jagdeep Khandpur died as he lived- in the service of people. In his untimely
passing away, the HR fraternity lost an outstanding thought leader, and the country
has lost a key contributor for developing people and the profession. We have lost a
valued colleague on whom we depended for support and ideas. Mr. Khandpur's life
was one of tireless commitment and service to the people, especially the HR
professionals of the country. His legacy will live on and will inspire many others in
the time to come.
Mr. Ranjan Acharya
1961 - 2009
Ranjan Acharya the think tank of Wipro Corporation is no longer with us. His
contribution to the HR fraternity will always be remembered as path breaking. He
was amongst the 21 professionals in the world to be certified by SEI and Carnegie
Mellon as a PCMM Lead Assessor. Through his life, Ranjan has shown HR
professionals what it takes for HR to add value to the business and how to win the
confidence and hearts of business leaders.

As your President, it is indeed my duty and privilege to articulate the way forward, and present a shared vision.The focus of the next two years would be to align the Network on three key pillars:1. Great organisations are built on the platform of continuity which in turn brings sustainability of initiatives introduced in the organisation over a period of time. I am pleased to note efforts put in by Rajan and his able team to focus on consolidating various initiatives and scaling them. The year under the current leadership team has seen more and more offerings to members of the Network and that itself is commendable.

National HRD Network launched its very own Learning Centre in June 2009 with the objective of equipping HR professionals members and non-members with strong functional competencies that would help set them for success in their organizations. The one-day interactive workshops are designed for middle level HR professionals. The facilitators are senior HR executives, renowned consultants & academicians.
In just 9 months, the Centre has conducted 28 workshops across major cities like Delhi, Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata, in close alignment with local chapters. The workshops are currently based on select HR Functional Technical Competencies as defined in HR Compass a joint initiative of NHRDN, CII and XLRI.
The workshops have proved to be a big hit with the participants and a lively affair with intense dialog and a strong practitioner's approach. in the world focused on explaining the concept of “coaching” and a variety of

with high performance in individuals, teams & organizations, factors that lead to coaching, factors that are a
hurdle to high performance, and measuring the effects of coaching.
In our constant endeavor to provide more value to our participants and members, we started a new initiative under

NHRDN conducted its' first virtual learning event the NHRDN Webinar in April 09,
on the topic 'Managing HR in turbulent times' by Mr. Aquil Busrai and Mr. N.S. Rajan,
which was well appreciated by the participants. From that event onwards several
HR Thought Leaders have shared their thoughts and experiences on diverse and
relevant topics, e.g. building the Leadership DNA, taking a scorecard/metrics
approach to HR, etc. The Virtual Learning Series completed its first Anniversary with
the event 'OD for Organizational Success' by Mr. K Ramkumar. The responses from
participants have been extremely encouraging with the last event having 645
registrations across India.
The webinar is for a duration of 60 minutes approx. with a brief presentation for
setting the context and then the speakers sharing their perspective and experiences
on the subject followed by Q&As

The significance of the internet and its astonishing ability to revolutionize the ways we operate is widely
acknowledged. At NHRDN, we conceptualized a platform for grass root action, based on an intriguing amalgam
of experiential insights, experiences and the Net. This allows our members to connect through innovative media

In keeping with providing enhanced value to its members, NHRDN has established itself on the Internet

Today's competitive business environment makes it imperative for HR professionals to adopt a strategic and holistic approach to human resource management. To contribute meaningfully in today's business context, HR professionals must ensure that HR strategies and processes link in directly with the organization's vision and competitive strategy. Strategies and processes also need to be conceptualized, managed and executed in a manner that adds maximum value not just to the organization but also to all stakeholders.
However, there is a challenge for the HR profession in India. The requirement of competent HR professionals is increasing manifold both in numbers and quality. There is a felt gap in the quality as well as quantity given that less than 5000 professionals graduate from different professional institutes. Of these, only about 1000 could be from known and established institutes. There is therefore, an immediate need to develop competencies of HR professionals anchored to a structured and robust framework.
It is against this backdrop that CII, NHRDN and XLRI collaborated with each other, to evolve a competency framework for HR professionals. Senior professionals were involved in the design of the framework and the assessment methodologies. Identified managers have also been trained on the framework and methodology.
The framework that has been evolved and branded, as HR Compass, will enable an objective assessment and development of HR professionals. The activities of Learning Centre and HR Talks are already anchored on this framework
It is now proposed to offer assessment and development interventions to corporates and HR professionals based on this framework.

Balaji currently heads Symphony University, Banglore and is a very highly rated teacher and trainer who has designed and conducted large number of training programs for executives in various sectors. A Fellow from IIM – Ahemdabad (1980-84), his areas of expertise are Human Resources Management, Human Resources and Organisation Development, Research Methods, Knowledge Management; Mentoring etc. He has been an active member of the NHRDN for several years and has been the Editor of the Network periodical “HRD Newsletter”; His editorials have been received well for their incisive and frank contents.
Srini is a human capital strategist, with considerable background in Human Capital Value Chain. He has worked both as internal staff and external consultant to organisations of varying sizes across multi industries including software services & consulting, software product development, garment, cement and electronic manufacturing. In the last quarter of 2006, the Executive Board, under the able leadership of the then National President P Dwarakanath, decided to create a new Journal of NHRDN. The decision to start a Journal was an affirmative response to the expectations of its members and learning needs which were captured by the survey instituted. This new beginning was flagged with the inimitable editorship of Dr P.V.R. Murthy, who agreed to take on the onerous responsibility of starting a new institutional learning vehicle.
The Journal is designed to be a quarterly issue, with a key feature of it being theme based. Another important aspect that is novel about the Journal is the practice of inviting a special guest editor for each issue, who helps conceive the contents, and in turn extends personal invitations to contribute to the carefully chosen few, recognized for their significant contributions in the select field. The year 2009 has been a significant one for the Pune Chapter. It has been a year that has seen some strategic and significant initiatives taking off to a good start and gaining momentum through the year. Significant among them being the launch of Learning Center, Integrated Chapter Web2.0 website, Establishment and strengthening of the partnership with the Academic Institutions, Focused membership drives and driving the Green Agenda.
We are delighted to have received the Emerging Chapter Award. This is a result of consistent contributions of everyone from Pune Chapter and we hope to bag the best chapter award next year.
Like every year, this year, awards were conferred at the National Conference at Mumbai.
Out of its 30 Chapters across India, four Chapters which distinctly stood out amongst the others with their focus, engagement and delivering value to its members and the HR fraternity were:

year 2009. During the year under audit we have following accomplishments to be
noted by you:
1. Audit conducted within a period of 1 month, which is an achievement going
by the past trends.
2. Virtualisation of network has yielded good results.
3. Number of members during the year grew by 2142.
4. Income grew by 64.64% as compared to the previous year.
Overall the performance of the organization has been commendable.

Auditor’s Report
We have examined the Balance Sheet as on 31st March, 2010 and Income & Expenditure Account for the
year ended as above of the above Trust. These financial statements are the responsibility of the
Management of the Trust. Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on
our audit.
We conducted our audit in accordance with the auditing standards generally accepted in India. Those
Standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the
financial statements are free of material misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a test basis,
evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. An audit also includes
assessing the accounting principles used and significant estimates made by management, as well as
evaluating the overall financial statement presentation. We believe that our audit provides a reasonable
basis for our opinion.
We further report as under:
(a) Accounts are maintained regularly and in accordance with the Provisions of the Act and the Rules.
(b) Receipts and disbursements are properly and correctly shown in the accounts.
(c) The cash balance and vouchers in custody of the Manager or Trustee on the date of the audit were in
agreement with the accounts.
(d) All books, deeds, accounts, vouchers or other documents or records required by us were produced
before us.
(e) An inventory certified by the Trustee of the movables of the Public Trust has been maintained.
(f) Shri Mahendra Patel Accountant appeared before us and furnished the necessary information required
by us.
(g) No property or funds of the trust were applied for any object or purpose other than the object or purpose
of the Trust.
(h) The amount outstanding for more than one year Rs. Nil. Amount written off during the year Rs. Nil.
(i) Tenders were invited for Construction and repairs exceeding Rs. 5000.
(j) No money of the public trust has been invested contrary to the provisions of Section 35.
(k) There is no alienation of immovable property contrary to provision of Section 36.
(l) Remarks :
1. The surplus of national conference during the year under audit at Mumbai is accounted for on the basis
of unaudited provisional accounts submitted by the chapter.

From a journey that began in 1985, National HRD Network (NHRDN), set up with the inspiring aim of spreading the movement of Human Resource Development (HRD) in the country, has entered its silver jubilee year. Over the past two and half decades, this institution has been built and mentored by outstanding leaders, committed office bearers, who have embraced the mission of creating an unparalleled network of the Human resource (HR) community that endeavored to further the vital cause, as trustees for the years gone by and for posterity too. Each member in turn contributed through his/her presence, participation and perpetuation of a unique bond. The underlying philosophy of the Network is that every human being has the potential to do remarkable things. “Full many a gem of purest ray serene, The dark unfathomed caves of ocean bear; Full many a flower is born to blush unseen, And waste its sweetness on the desert air” ; this poignant allusion from Thomas Gray's 'Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard' underlines an imperative need to recognize, discover and nurture talent. This is reflective of the very nature of the HR profession whose role is that of custodians and alchemists of human capital
The National HRD Network is an association of professionals, with the overarching commitment to promote the HRD movement in India and enhancing the capability of human resource professionals, enabling them to make an impactful contribution in enhancing competitiveness and creating value to society. The Network was initiated to focus the attention of organizations and concerned individuals on how to optimize human resources, through education, training, research and experience sharing. 'The HRD process is an organization comprised of analyzing and matching the role and the person by developing the person in the role, developing the role for the person, developing equitability, developing self-renewing capability and coping with collective power'. It is a process by which employees in an organization are enabled to:
• Acquire capabilities to perform various tasks associated with their present and future roles;
• Develop their inner potential for self and organizational growth;
• Develop an organizational culture where networking relationships, teamwork and collaboration among different units is strong, contributing to organizational growth and individual well being.
“Humans are social animals endowed with reason”, observed Aristotle. The very foundations of the HRD process, perhaps has its origins in the humanism of Renaissance of the 15 and 16th century and The Enlightenment of the 18th Century. The Renaissance celebrated the power of the individual and the works of masters such as Michelangelo, Da Vinci and Brunelleschi stand testimony to the progress of man and his ability to achieve the unimaginable. The Enlightenment era, encompassing outstanding scientists and philosophers like Newton and Descartes, brilliant writers like Locke, Hume, Rousseau and Voltaire and Burke; was characterized by an optimistic and deeply held faith in the ability of human beings to further themselves by using reason progressively. Thinkers of The Enlightenment believed deeply in the premise that human beings are rational and have the potential to shape their destiny. Freedom, happiness and knowledge were recognized as the natural goals of the rational man. The Encyclopedia, a 35 volume monumental epitome of the Enlightenment era, published by Denis Diderot mid 18th Century, celebrates the premise that man's route to knowledge is served by empirical methods enriched by contemplation and rational reflection, laying seeds for the development of social sciences.
The emergence of social sciences, in a world which had so far been concerned with physical sciences, influenced by the Industrial revolution which impacted commerce and business profoundly, recognized the increasing awareness of the variety of human experiences and the growing ethos of the cultural and social character of the human milieu and behaviour in society.
Adam Smith, in his 'The Theory of Moral Sentiments' 1759, considered to be a psychological foundation of the much celebrated later work 'Wealth of Nations' dwelt on the principles of human nature of which social institutions and social behavior could be deduced. Contemporary thought was centered on transformation in the way we lived, owing to burgeoning of population, entrepreneurship, changed conditions of labour, rising awareness of political masses, urbanization, advent of technology, new concepts of property and capital, and

emergence of factory systems. Our lexicon welcomed new words hitherto never used such as industry, capitalism, proletariat, commercialism and interestingly crisis too. In the early 19th Century, August Comte, the French philosopher, highlighted the need for a new science, “one whose subject would be human beings as social animals.”
The scientific enquiry into human behaviour and a deeper examination of social and environmental factors in the late 19th and 20th Century, the foundation for social sciences, assumed perhaps the anthropocentric view which places humans at the core and holds them to be the point of origin pre-supposing the immense possibilities is a humanistic metaphor. The new field of 'management' started to gain in significance. Scientific management grew as a science from the work of Charles Babbage and further advanced by Frederick Taylor in his 1911 book 'The Principles of Scientific Management'. Harvard professor Elton Mayo, and the Hawthorne experiments at AT&T during 1928 to 1932, empirically discovered the importance of social conditions at work and that workers became a dynamic social group and laying the early inroads into the human relations approach to management. A decade later, the human relations school of thought, as an applied social science, got furthered by Chester Barnard, a practicing executive who highlighted the importance of a shared vision, in his 1938 classic 'The Functions of the Executive'.
As industry continued to evolve, human relations approach was found to be insufficient to address work environments and people issues in their emerging complexity, leading to the gradual emergence of the Human Resources school of thought as the natural progression, still anchored in humanism. Thinkers and management scientists immensely enriched this journey: Abraham Maslow's articulation of the hierarchy of needs, in his 1943 publication 'A Theory of Human Motivation'; Frederick Hertzberg's motivation-hygiene theory in his 1959 book 'The Motivation to Work'; Douglas McGregor's Theory X and Theory Y espoused in 'The Human Side of Enterprise' 1960; Gary Becker who developed the foundations of human capital theory. Early use of the term HRD, around 1964, is credited to Harbison and Myers, development economists, who proposed indicators for development in developing nations. Leonard Nadler, of George Washington University, is credited to have formulated the contemporary concept and defining the field of 'human resource development', for the first time in 1969 which he redefined later in 1984 as “organized learning experiences in a definite time period to increase the possibility of job performance and growth”. Even as we recognize HRD as a relatively recent development, in actual form it has been a well established practice over the past few decades with evolving contours.
India embraced the emerging concept of HRD quite early. Larsen & Toubro was the first organization that set up a dedicated and pioneering HRD department in 1974. Prof Udai Pareek and Prof TV Rao of IIMA, whose seminal contributions to this field are widely acclaimed, outlined a philosophy for the new HRD system. XLRI set up the L&T Chair for HRD in 1983 (with Dr TV Rao as the first chair professor) and later the Centre for HRD. In the early 80's professional managers from enterprises such as L&T, Bank of Baroda, SAIL, TVS along with academicians from IIM-A and XLRI took the lead in designing and implementing HRD systems, and recognized the need to share these learning's and experiences. In a seminar held in Bombay in 1985, the need to further the movement of HRD by strengthening institutional mechanisms as well create a vibrant forum for interaction amongst HR professionals and promote the movement of HRD in the country. This gave rise to The National HRD Network on 2nd March 1985, which was later registered as a Society and Trust in Dec 1986. Signatories to the Memorandum of Association included Dr TV Rao, Fr E Abraham of XLRI, Dr KK Verma, Dr Anil Khandelwal, Dr DM Pestonjee, Mr GK Ghosh, Dr Kakoli Saha and Mr. JK Parikh. Today, The National HRD Network (NHRDN), today, a country wide presence with 30 chapters and home to 8000 members embodies the soul and spirit of human resources professionals, is indeed an inimitable institution.
Institutions are understood and 'identified with a social purpose and permanence, transcending individual human lives and intentions, and with the making and enforcing of rules governing cooperative human behavior'. They have been a focus and object of study by social sciences, and play a vital role in creating and strengthening social capital. networks to do things for each other, and can be measured by the extent of trust and reciprocity in a community between individuals, in both homogeneous and heterogeneous settings. What makes an institution endure? What factors govern the prospects of perpetuity? What drives the need to connect and collaborate? These are vital questions to reflect upon to unravel the components of institution building. Looking back at the annals of NHRD Network's history may answer some of these questions and perhaps help raise some even more critical ones.
NHRDN, an association of professionals, has a well defined philosophy, as shared erstwhile, with the overarching commitment to promote the HRD movement in India and enhancing the capability of human resource professionals, enabling them to make an impactful contribution in enhancing competitiveness and creating value to society. It addresses growth of self, the organization and the society at large creating an uplifting and compelling framework of engagement of individuals in the Network. There is an established “Code of Conduct' that binds all members, and all meetings at the Board level or at the Chapter level commence only after reading the code, reaffirming our faith and intent in adhering to the principles. The abiding purpose of the Network and the remarkable possibilities of contributing through a collective process is the bedrock of this institution.
The Network is now a vibrant not-for-profit body of 8000 members, making it clearly the most representative association, particularly of the HR profession. It comprises industrial enterprises, academicians, practicing professionals and students, a rich and diverse community together for a collective cause. It is a bonding that gets enriched with members bringing in other members, attendees of events seeking to be part of the Network which has grown over the years and multiplied to such a large association; to learn and to serve.
The National HRD Network has a documented set of bye-laws that govern the function of the Executive Board and the Chapters of the Network. The Executive Board comprises the National President, Secretary, Treasurer, Past President, Elected Members, select Nominees, and the Chapter Presidents. Board Meetings are held every quarter, and accounts audited every year, without fail. The Chapters in turn follow the direction set by the Executive Board and play a critical role in enabling sustained levels of engagement, on one hand following the national agenda set, and on the other addressing the needs of the local members.
NHRDN has been fortunate to have had at its helm, over the past 25 years, a distinguished line of National Presidents from industry and academia that have continuously expanded the boundaries while staying steadfast with the Network's vision and objectives. There are well laid down processes that facilitate the succession plan for anointing the National President. A Search Committee comprising past Presidents of NHRD, distinguished academicians and renowned CEOs recommends who the baton should pass on to, duly ratified by the Executive Board. While the Executive Board serves the core purpose of setting directions to the Network, the 30 Chapters function with fair degree of empowerment. With the support and guidance of Regional Presidents, the Chapter leaders and office bearers such as Chapter President and Secretary of the respective Chapter provide the requisite leadership and guide the execution of activities at the Chapter level. The range of activities at the Chapter level, and the level of engagement constantly reenergizes the Network, drawing upon each other's capabilities and forging a symbiotic relationship between the local Chapters and the all India Network.
The vision of the Network and the agenda and tone set by the National President and the Executive Board finds translation into a wide range of activities that engage the members through the year. Monthly Meetings and Special events, Learning Centre workshops, Webinars, and special programs like “Meet a Mentor', seminars, conferences, training interventions, and informal get-togethers create multiple venues for networking, learning and growth. Books and papers are published to share developments in the field of HRD.
The HRD Newsletter published every month and the HRD Network Journal every quarter are vital institutional vehicles for dissemination of news and knowledge. The NHRDN also worked on a critical mission of identifying HR Competencies that meet the need to stay relevant and through a critical initiative termed as “HR Compass” build a continuous stream of assessors who in turn run assessment centers for professionals to equip themselves for a fulfilling role in their chosen profession. Keeping with the times, the NHRDN has created a web presence, built on the social networking platform Web2.0, that provides a rich and engaging virtual connect between all its members. All of these interventions combine to provide a compelling value proposition for the members of the Network.
The National Conference convened by NHRDN, formerly every two years, and by increasing demand, now held annually is recognized as path breaking event. The venue is rotated across regions to enhance participation of the membership fraternity and allow for a rich diversity. It attracts speakers from all over the world, from academia and industry, and nearly a 1000 delegates come together to share and learn from experiences over a 2 to 3 day period. The National Conference not only remains a much awaited event, also serves the vital purpose of connecting members spread countrywide under a single roof aiding knowledge transfer.

The HRD Excellence Awards were instituted in 1989 to recognize and honour individuals and organizations that have made a significant contribution to the HRD movement in the country. Along with this, the Best Chapter award is also given to the chapter that demonstrates the greatest vitality and makes a unique contribution. The Network also instituted an award to recognize an Emerging Chapter. These awards are handed over at the National Conference.
A powerful aspect that has held together the Network is the amazing spirit of volunteerism that pervades the institution creating emotional glue that binds its members with a common cause. All office bearers work in an honorary capacity, sparing time from their professional pursuits, and commit themselves to executing the collective mission with selflessness, dedication and zeal. The keenness to serve and joy in bonding combines into an effective amalgam that sustains the overall ethos.
The journey of the National HRD Network provides insights into the growth of an institution. The fundamental bedrock of institution building presupposes the creation of a continuum that carries forth the core purpose of the association. Nurtured by committed leaders and fueled by new successors, the core vision remains resplendent; a flame that continues to ignite minds.
Having traversed two and a half decades, it is now a good time perhaps to pause, reflect, refresh and reset. On the road ahead, Kahlil Gibran's poetic words lend a gentle lesson to stay on course:
At ebb tide I wrote

Change beckons us. As an institution, NHRDN has had an eventful journey of two and half decades. Akin to the first leaves of spring which welcome the new season, we have embarked on a path, daring indeed, to revisit and refresh the institution and the building blocks that constitute it.
We have been immensely enriched by the learning from the past 25 years, and the time has come for us to envision what our Network would be for the future generations, and work together to achieve a defined outcome. An important change which we have unfolded involves our logo. Marshal McLuhan had pithily observed that “the medium is the message” and the endeavour of the NHRDN Board had been to examine the need for a new logo that truly reflects current times and which provides a consistent and coordinated expression of our identity. It is indeed my privilege to introduce you to our new logo, an exciting harbinger of our ability to welcome and embrace change.
Our new logo aims to cement the foundation of our intent, convey the collaborative spirit, lend focus on organizational goals, and direct effort towards institutional credibility and distinction. An institution’s identity, which reflects the vision of the organization, is an invaluable asset. Corporate identity of an organization encompasses and illuminates its services, achievements, and its unique features that distinguish our organization from the others. A powerful brand image acts like a pillar for a strong corporate identity.
• Functional Role: To augment knowledge and skills relevant to HRD, its philosophy, processes and implementation, through explorations and experimentation.
• Driving Belief: The Institution believes that every human being has the potential to do remarkable things. We have the ability to tap that potential.
• Brand Commitments: Develop a superior working environment for human beings, wherein they shall become self-reliant.
• Personality: Smart, Honest, Global HR Personnel.
The NHRD Network is all about tapping unexplored human potential. The anthropocentric logo represents the idea that we help complete the missing pieces in any HR practitioner’s life, be it professional or personal. The jigsaw piece represents a single individual, because it is the individual who has the power to change oneself. Only he/she can complete the circle of life.
The Typography deployed for the NHRDN logo is the font “Arial Narrow”. This is a more contemporary, sans-serif font which is considered versatile, and interestingly carries more features of the Humanist classification amongst typeface characteristics, perhaps aptly reflecting the origin of the HRD function which has its roots in humanism.
Colours have a dominant role in terms of fulfillment, and as most of us would have experienced, they transmit stimuli more responsive than words. The consilience of disciplines such as art, psychology, cognition and form creates a collective perception of colour in our minds. Colour has the power to change emotions and cause reactions. The brand colours of NHRDN have been chosen to represent an identity that symbolizes the virtues of the organization, and the HR function itself, which is the custodian of the human capital. Blue represents a calm and trustworthy quality. Long considered a corporate colour, Oxford blue is associated with intelligence, optimism, people orientation and stability. The red, symbolizing energy and enthusiasm, breaks the monotony, adding a sense of excitement as it perks up a more subdued cool pallet of blue.

The National HRD Network collaborates with other professional bodies and institutions.
The National HRD Network collaborated with MDI, Gurgaon in offering a 2 year MBA programme in HR. The Network supports the programme with inputs into the programme design and content, making available expert faculty and mentoring students.
The National HRD Network has collaborated with CII and XLRI, Jamshedpur in evolving a competency model for HR professionals. The NHRDN team that worked on the model included Arvind Agrawal, R Vidyasagar, C Mahalingam and Dr Pallab Bandyopadhyay.
The National HRD Network collaborated with the University of Michigan in an ongoing survey of Human Resource competency practices around the globe. Other organizations that collaborate with the University of Michigan in this project are Society for Human Resource Management, USA; IAE School of Business, Irish Management Institute, Australia Human Resource Institute and Tsinghua University, China.
The National HRD Network has recently collaborated with the University of South Australia on a joint research study on HRM Strategic Integration and its contribution to organizational performance. This study is being coordinated by Ashok Chanda currently based at the University of South Australia.
As a prelude to the 11th National Conference held in Kolkata from 29th November to 1st December 2007, NHRDN had collaborated with The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, on a research study titled 'The DNA of Indian Business Leadership' More than 100 industry leaders participated in this study facilitated by NHRDN. A preliminary research report on the findings of the study was presented at the 11th National Conference. The detailed report was released later in 2008-09. Very recently, based on the findings of the study, the Wharton Research Team of M/s Peter Capelli, Jitendra Singh, Harbir Singh and Michael Useem has authored a book titled 'The India Way How India's top business leaders are revolutionizing management'.
The National HRD Network has collaborated with HBP, a wholly owned subsidiary of Harvard University. HBP has recently established its Indian arm and serves customers in three primary markets - Educational Institutions, Corporations, and Individual Managers. The purpose of this collaboration is to create more value proposition for NHRDN members.
The National HRD Network established the Academy of HRD in 1990 for undertaking research in HR. The Academy is located in Ahmedabad and apart from being engaged in research, offers various training and educational programmes on themes relevant to HRD.

AIMA is a federation of Local Management Associations (LMAs). AIMA today affiliates 58 LMAs across the country and two Co-operating management associations i.e. Qatar Indian Management Association and Mauritius Management Association.
