NEXUS Corporate Newsletter - Volume No. 6 Issue No. 1 / 20202
MAKE YOUR CONNECTION Bringing the world to you for over 10 years
MY TEAM,Welcome to the first NEXUS Group corporate newsletter
for 2020. As we celebrate the 10th anniversary for NEXUS
Group and its subsidiaries, we not only reflect on our
past, but look forward to an exciting year of growth and
opportunity.
2018 IN FOCUS:The year 2018 was one where we experienced many
trials and tribulations. Due to some financial challenges,
NEXUS had to clear out losses and make some difficult
decisions. However, like any successful company with
sound management and leadership, strategic plans were
made that would bolster our losses and help us to emerge
stronger than ever, without the need for financial backing
from shareholders. The most notable change from this
was the commencement of a comprehensive endeavor to
establish a well-defined portfolio of five distinct business
sectors under the NEXUS Group umbrella. This and other
decisions that were made during this year would set the
stage for a better, stronger 2019.
2019 IN FOCUS:The year 2019 was also a relatively tough year -- though
in comparison to 2018, we started to perform much better
as a company and pick up some momentum. Surprisingly,
we managed to make a significant profit, despite the
nature and age of our business – which itself was an
outstanding achievement. This year, we also took several
important steps in order to prepare for our Initial Public
Offering (IPO), which included improving processes and
implementing controls, assessing and upgrading our
fiscal organization, and addressing tax concerns. We also
enhanced our investor relations capabilities to ensure that
potential investors have a clear and transparent view of
our organization, from the inside out.
2020:Growing a successful business is no easy feat. As a
company of diverse individuals with a unique skill set and
strong determination to succeed, there is no challenge or
setback that we cannot overcome. Going forward, we will
continue to streamline our business to make processes
more efficient and effective, readjust and restructure for
better use of human capital, and continue the important
work necessary to prepare our company for a
successful IPO.
In addition, 2020 marks the proud milestone
of our 10th year anniversary.

WHY NEXUS WAS FOUNDED:
Inspired by my father’s successful career with Saudia
Airlines, I founded NEXUS Group a decade ago. In my
career, I naturally gravitated towards aviation, becoming
CEO of NETJETS well before the age of 35. With NETJETS
exiting the Middle East, I saw an opportunity to improve
the aviation industry through the provision of full range
aviation offerings and personalized service. From that
concept, NEXUS Group was born.
Since then, NEXUS has grown over the past 10 years by
overcoming financial shortfalls, to pursuing strategic
growth opportunities like acquiring the fully established
American company WYVERN in June 2014. The company
grew exponentially and made an entry into the training
business as its need to train young Saudi nationals grew.
As aviation organizations began to inquire about training,
the NEXUS Aviation Academy was born. This led to full-
service academies in Africa, India and China with the
latter promising to deliver profitable growth over the next
twenty years.
To celebrate our 10th anniversary, and our employees
and our stakeholders, and the success of our company,
we are hosting a reception, which will be a celebration to
remember. More details on this will emerge in the coming
weeks, and I hope you’ll join us.
As always, NEXUS will continue to put clients first, and
with the support from our stakeholders, continue to
improve our business through organizational structure
and consolidation in preparation for a sustainable and
profitable upcoming 5 years.
Thank you for your continued support through the good
and the bad times. Your unwavering confidence in NEXUS
means everything to me.

It also enhances our credibility as we continue to grow our aviation business in Saudi Arabia. We are grateful to the officials at GACA who worked with us and supported us through this process.”

NEXUS Flight Operations India managed the first flight
for the Bahrain Royal family in Jaipur, where NEXUS India
managed the ground handling and supervision for the
flight They had come for a visit to Jaipur and were quite
thrilled with the service, which was provided by NEXUS
Flight Operations since FOC India managed to turn the
aircraft around in the stipulated time frame.
NEXUS India’s operation team worked very closely to
ensure a safe, on-time, and enjoyable experience for
everyone on board and with their ops team. Generally, they
don’t give out operations to any third-party providers but
since we were very efficient in managing all their queries
and provided the best solution and price to the team, they
decided to go with NEXUS. The aircraft that FOC India
managed was G450.

For the first time, NEXUS Academy has become an authorized Test of English for Aviation(T.E.A.) testing center in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Based on ICAO regulations requiring all airline and
helicopter pilots who fly internationally, and all air traffic
controllers providing international flight support must have
a minimum level of English known as ICAO Operational
Level 4.
This test was first developed by the Mayflower College
in the U.K. and is recognized by the U.K. Civil Aviation
Authority. It is a test of Plain English in an aviation
context used for licensing purposes. This examination
tests a candidate’s ability to communicate in English
and is conducted face-to-face by an examiner who asks
questions and interviews the candidate.
“We are excited for this new achievement of being
recognized as an official T.E.A. testing center for Aviation
English,” said NEXUS Group Founder & Chairman, Mr.
Abdullah Al-Sayed. He added: “having this designation
in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia helps us align and be
prepared to accept students who want a career in
aviation.”
NEXUS Academy Acting C.E.O., Mr. Hamad AlZeer said,
“we need to be prepared for the critical shortage of
commercial pilots expected within the next two decades,
by ensuring NEXUS Academy is ready to train future
generations of top aviation professionals.”
During the testing interview process, T.E.A. evaluates
the candidate’s listening and speaking skills. During the
interview, six sub skills are scored: pronunciation, language
structure, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, and
interaction.
Academy’s Achievements Highlight for 2019/2020:More than 100 operations team members for Riyadh
Airport Company graduated through NEXUS Academy
English Program and all of them met their operational
requirement.
• NEXUS Academy has finished its first Course in DGR
for Agility Global Integrated Logistic
• NEXUS Academy has conducted the second Dispatch
course for Saudi Aramco
• NEXUS Academy has successfully trained Royal Fleet
team members on the operations System “AIMS”
Goals for 2020: • NEXUS Academy is applying for Part 183 to become a
GACA-approved English Center in KSA.

Scenario: Bob is uncomfortable with a process at work for safety reasons and asks others if they feel the same. Many agree, but warn Bob not to cross Joe, the director, because the process is Joe’s creation. Bob politely brings up the idea for improvement to Joe in the hallway, only to get a red-faced response of, “You can keep that idea to yourself Bob and you better follow my rules or go find another place to work!” Later, Bob and others noticed Joe and his close-knit followers smirking about Bob “not fitting in”.
Aviation professionals come up with ideas every day to
improve safety. It is their duty to do so. However, if these
ideas are met with resistance, anger, or other malevolent
behavior it may be helpful to consider the following human
and organizational factors to gain a better understanding
of how to affect positive change in a constructive way.
Emotional intelligence is the ability to monitor one’s own
emotional state, as well as the emotional states of others,
and manage one’s behavior to ensure the collective (team)
emotional state remains positive and constructive. In the
scenario above, it appears Joe could use some training on
this topic.
Psychological safety considers the degree to which
team members can express their ideas freely without
fear of rejection or loss of face. A team with a high level
of psychological safety is better able to take risks, solve
problems, and develop innovative solutions, versus a
team with a relatively low level of psychological safety.
The organization in the scenario appears to have low
psychological safety since Bob was warned not to voice his
ideas.
Harper and White (2013) conducted a study of 108 teams
to explore the degree to which emotional intelligence
influenced psychological safety and team effectiveness.
They concluded that emotional intelligence is essential
to both psychological safety and team effectiveness.
Wencang Zhou (2016) analyzed 54 teams and concluded
that team emotional intelligence improves team decision-
making performance through increasing psychological
safety.
These findings provide evidence of the importance of both
emotional intelligence and psychological safety on team
performance. It is, therefore, reasonable to hypothesize
that these factors may also positively influence the culture
of an organization. Said another way, higher levels of
emotional intelligence and psychological safety should
result in a higher probability of a positive safety culture.
Current university post-graduate studies support this idea.
So, what does this mean for safety leaders, especially in
high-reliability industries like air transportation? Discuss
emotional intelligence and psychological safety among
your colleagues. Offer in-house training on the topics to
improve your safety culture. Encourage (or demand) that
human resources consider emotional intelligence screening
as part of the hiring process. For those already hired, the
good news is that emotional intelligence can be improved
via training.
