We call this column the President’s perspective for a reason. I get to have a perspective on what we are doing, what our members are up to, and how all of this fits into our mission and our advocacy.

Well, the good news is that not only do I have a perspective, I have an opinion!

Did you know that in the first six months of this year we have done over 20 ribbon cuttings with our members?! We have handed out six Celebrate Business

Success awards to fantastic members. We have hosted over 3,000 guests at various events, including ones where we routinely post a sign saying “Sold out, add your name to the wait list.” Our Business Review Councils have not only been effective, but we’ve expanded them to new communities in the East Metro. We have had speakers ranging from the Mayor of Saint Paul to Ramsey County Commissioners and the Minnesota Vikings to the St. Paul Saints. We even survived a legislative session

with some nice wins for the East Metro (I’m trying to be positive!) and continue to work with our partners across the East Metro on our transit initiatives.

My opinion is that we remain an incredibly relevant, vibrant, aggressive Chamber committed to creating member value. The Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal recently ranked the largest Chambers in the metropolitan area. Guess who was number two? That’s right, behind the Minnesota State Chamber (which covers the entire state!) was the Saint Paul Area Chamber.

We are going to continue to push, challenge, and create value through our services. Thank you for being part of this Chamber, and thanks for giving me the chance to provide this mid-year perspective.

One of the first things visitors to Como Zoo’s new Gorilla Forest habitat notice is the striking new view. Instead of visitors looking down on the gorillas, Como’s seven western lowland gorillas now peer down on families and field trip groups from a grassy, elevated pitch.

“It’s a small shift, but from the perspective of the gorillas it’s a really huge improvement,” says senior zookeeper Joanne Kelly, who adds that feeling discomfort “from being looked down on” is just one of the traits humans and great apes have in common. “The new design puts them more at ease, so visitors can see more of their natural behaviors and curiosity.”

That shift in perspective is just one of the progressive new features in this $11 million, publicly-funded expansion, which includes new trees and natural substrate, a working waterfall, and a soil-covered, sky-light filled day room where gorillas can soak up vitamin D even during the winter. The behind-the-scenes facilities even feature a gorilla-sized blood pressure cuff

and ultrasound machine that will allow Como Zoo keepers to collect data to improve the longevity of male gorillas, prone to cardiovascular problems.

Though Como Zoo has been a leader in primate care for more than 50 years, becoming the first zoo in the nation to successfully hand raise western lowland gorillas, that progressive reputation wasn’t reflected in its cramped, 1980s-era primate building. The new Gorilla Forest, which opened to the public June 6, more than tripled the habitat available to gorillas—an expansion that makes it the largest mesh-enclosed primate exhibit ever built. The state-of-the-art facilities make it possible for Como Zoo, a long-time partner to the Gorilla Species Survival Plan program, to care for two gorilla groupings—a breeding troop of three females led by Schroeder, a 500-plus pound silverback, and a boisterous trio of related bachelors, all of them 14-years-old. “The design of Gorilla Forest gives them all so many choices, that it’s been really fun for visitors to see them discover what’s new,” says Kelly.

Improving the visitor experience has become a growing priority at Como Park Zoo and Conservatory, which welcomes more than two million visitors a year—the largest audience of any destination in the state besides the Mall of America. One of the country’s last free admission metro zoos, audience numbers soared during the recession—a trend that helped make the historic Zoo and Conservatory’s case at the Legislature as a regional asset worthy of taxpayer support. “Como is quite beloved and the number of people who come prove this really is a state amenity,” says State Representative Alice Hausman, who advocated for the public bonding behind Gorilla Forest that was approved in 2010. “Every time we have a hearing for the Legislature and we’ve talked about Como Zoo, every member around the table had been

there and they all had a pleasant memory or story to tell.”

Another story worth telling is the economic ripple effects Como creates, says Jackie Sticha, president of Como Friends, the nonprofit fundraising partner that has raised more than $30 million toward improvements over the last decade. “When we opened Polar Bear Odyssey in 2010 we found that the $9 million the state provided combined with the matching private funds we raised had an estimated economic impact of nearly $50 million for the local economy,” she says. “So building a great new habitat for our gorillas has tremendous benefits for primates on both sides of Gorilla Forest.”

Today, in business, customers expect more from companies. No longer is it about how FAST a business responds to a customer, but also how WELL they respond. Social media is playing a strong part in the front of customer relationships. The companies that do social media customer service well are those that respond to customer comments directed at them and seek out when, where and how customers are mentioning their brand by utilizing various social media listening techniques. Finding out how customers search, utilizing SEO tactics, is also a very valuable tactic to find what people are searching for, which can then dictate where your brand needs to be.

Q. How long have you been an ambassador?

A. Since January 2013

Q. What do you enjoy most about being a Chamber member?

A. The opportunity to meet so many other people and to be “in the know” on what’s going on in the Saint Paul area and who’s doing it. It’s a big city, but with the Chamber, it doesn’t seem so big.

Q. What is one piece of advice you would offer fellow members?

A. Participate. There are many opportunities to meet fellow Chamber members. Show up, introduce yourself, and ask, “How can I help you and your business?”

Q. Fun tidbit?

A. I’m concluding a 2-year stint as an “Honorary Commander” with the 934th Airlift Wing of the Air

Force Reserve. It’s a community relations program that exposes civilians to the mission of the Air Force Reserve so that we can spread the word about the important work these men and women do. I’ve had experiences from flying in a C-130 on an overnight trip to a base in Texas, to attending a military ball, to shaking the hands of brave men and women and wishing them a safe deployment for an unspecified location in Southwest Asia. I also had the pleasure of watching them return safely four months later to the hugs, cheers and tears of their loved ones.

Our Ambassador Committee plays a vital role inensuring a fantastic member experience. The team iscomprised of committed and engaged SPACC membersdedicated to attending events, ribbon cuttings, andreaching out to members via phone and personal visits.Interested in joining the team? Tell us about your recent accomplishments/expansion.

The last year has passed quickly with a variety of branding and website projects. We were thrilled to develop the logo celebrating Town & Country Club's 125th anniversary. In May, we launched the extensive new website and online catalog for Princeton-based Crystal Cabinet Works. In the summer of 2012, we launched the high-end baby clothing website, Borrow Baby Couture, which has since been featured on numerous news outlets, including The Today Show and America Now. In our fifth year of partnering with Como Park Zoo & Conservatory, we developed the theme and identity for this summer's fundraising gala, Sunset Affair: Urban Jungle. And in an ongoing partnership with WineTable.com, we launched the My Wine Lists wine pairing app for the Windows 8 operating system and ongoingly manage the online community's content marketing, social media and email campaigns. We also developed the brand identity, as well as designed and built

the website for the Minnesota/California-based private equity firm, Isles Ranch Partners. Then in March, we moved our office from downtown Minneapolis to the beautiful Lake Calhoun Center in Uptown.

What’s a fact about your business most people don’t know?

Most people don't know that in addition to our immediate clientele, we also provide the strategic vision, and website development manpower behind numerous other local agencies' services. Although our name may not always appear on the end-product, we have a reputation among both our clients and our peers of delivering superior work.

In 2005, your Chamber created a tradition called Celebrate Business Success.

This award honors those who provide leading examples of how members of the business community contribute to a shared vision of economic success throughout the Saint Paul/East Metro area.

Sponsored by:

At the Chamber’s June Membership Meeting, Dan Jasper accepted a Celebrate Business Success award on behalf of the Mall of America. In 1992, Mall of America opened its doors and the face of Minnesota changed forever. The Mall of America has become a destination for everything from family vacations, weekend getaways and even honeymoons. Tourists from all over the world come to the Mall to take in the sights and capitalize on no sales tax on clothing. Mall of America will continue to grow with a new addition on the north side of the building, which will include a boutique hotel, an office tower and more than 150,000 square feet of additional, high-end retail.
