Wild Rose Antique Collectors Society General Meeting, March 23, 2015

President, Bruce Gilbertson called the meeting to order at 7:35 pm. All members present had received the Dig & Pick. Doug Styles moved the adoption of the minutes from the February 23, 2015 General Meeting. Seconded by Viola Rabinovitz. Motion carried. Correspondence received: The Buffalo, Calgary's First Canadian Collectors Club March 2015 newsletter. Letter from the Edmonton Stamp Club in regard to the comments in the February Dig & Pick (minutes of the January 26 General Meeting). Keith Spencer says ESC did not file its annual reports for several years and was dropped from the Societies' Register. The club was never audited. Old Business: 2015 Show: Bernie Haber has sent Vendor Packages for 288 Spaces. He has 4 spaces left in Row G and the back wall if needed. He is expecting payment for 3 spaces and 1 more space was applied for at the meeting. Marjorie Berg reported that she has received 11 Display applications so far, with 3 more possible displays. There is room for 15 Displays plus 2 spaces for the appraiser, Gale Pirie. Confirmation and placement details will be mailed to Display participants next week. Marjorie reported that Vicki Hackl had suggested that one of the displays should be The 40 Years of WRAC Shows. This was discussed at the March 2 Executive meeting. The plan is to have a continuous feed Power Point presentation using photos of Displays from shows from 1975 onward. Collectible items from WRAC members would complete the display. A sign-up list for those wishing to contribute to the display was available tonight. Volunteer lists were available tonight for the club table and for display security. Donna Zeigler has volunteered to staff the Show Office on set-up day, but we still need someone for Saturday and Sunday. Mel Seutter will do the wrist-banding and Paul Froese has again offered to help Bernie with the Show. Membership: John Horrigan had nothing to report. One of tonight's guests applied for membership. Website: Clinton Beck announced that all issues of the Dig & Pick are now posted on our website and that the problem with Members Sign-in has been solved. Our Show ad pops-up when anyone Googles an antique item. Treasurer: Alan Thain had nothing to report. New Business: Pins commemorating our 40th annual show: the Executive is recommending that in addition to the vendor ribbons, we give vendors special pins. Clinton Beck showed a design featuring a

Pewter engraved pin for $2.50. Bernie had found a pin with the Alberta shape as is our current pins and we can have Wild Rose Antique Collectors 40th show 2015. The pins would have a blue back ground with gold text. The cost of the pins would be $1.69 each. We would need 500. Therefore: $845.00 plus G.S.T.

Motion: Moved by Bill Borgwardt that the Executive purchase pins commemorating the 40th Show up to $900. Seconded by Fred Burak. Carried

While You Think About It note-pads. Clinton explained that the Executive is recommending purchase of these notepads for vendors. If someone is thinking about an item, the vendor can write his/her booth number and a description of the item on the sheet and give it to the potential buyer. The sheets would have the club name and web address printed on them. This would be a good way for the club to advertise and have benefits for buyers. Clinton has a quote of $820 for 200 notepads (50 sheets per pad). Bill Borgwardt suggested checking with Vista Prints for a better price.

Motion: Moved by James Hogan that we purchase While You Think About It note-pads up to the value of $900. Seconded by Kim Stade. Carried

Lifetime Membership: Kim presented Gord and Karin Soch with gold name-tags to confer the honor of a Lifetime Membership in WRAC. Gord has done extra duties for the club for years; organizing bus trips, displays and other events as well as serving as vice-president for several years. He developed the format for the newsletter while he was still at NAIT; a format that is still being used. He and Bill Borgwardt have always designed the Show poster and for years Gord took all the official photos at our Shows. He has spoken to the club about his collections on many occasions. The Sochs were nominated for this honor by Kim Stade, Bernie Haber, and Bill Borgwardt.

Attendance tonight: 43 Guests: 4 Door prizes: $25 gift certificate to the Rocky Mountain Antique Mall won by Nancy Ross. (Baby's) hot water bottle won by Gord Soch. Raffle prize: 1939 Dionne Quintuplets calendar won by Bruce Gilbertson. Moved by Joyce Smith; seconded by Liz Iggulden, that the business portion of the meeting be adjourned at 8:10 pm. Carried. Program: Members and guest showed and talked about their souvenir/tacky tourist "finds". Bruce Gilbertson Marjorie Berg President Acting Secretary

brand name of gramophone/phonograph

From : Linda <[email protected]> Subject : brand name of gramophone/phonograph To : [email protected] Cc : Linda <[email protected]>

Fri, Apr 03, 2015 12:30 PM 2 attachments

i am so glad i found this site. i remember my dad involved in this somehow. he was a long time collector of antiques especially gramophones. he also did repair work. at the time of his death, he had a collection of 32. seemed at one time or another, there was a gramophone in almost every room of the house.. and the rest lined up nicely in the rumpus room. i inherited a few of these machines and have sold most of them. the one that is personally my own is a bit of a mystery to me. the brand name shown inside on the back of the box behind the turntable reads.. “concert”. i am having no luck at all online finding recognition or information about this name. I’m wondering if you can give me some history on it. i want to write it up and keep it inside the machine somewhere so that when it gets passed down to my kids, they will have a record of it. i am going to try to upload a pic of it. this machine is a console style, with 2 doors in front which has record storage inside. the machine is approx 30 inches long and maybe 24 inches deep. i certainly appreciate any info you can pass on to on my beloved machine. Thank you.

Show & Tell: Some of the items seen at the March 23 Meeting

My niece brought me this box from Cuba. It looks attractive, but the inside painting is pretty sloppy! Also, from Cuba, these castanets - they're mounted on boards, so don't really do anything. Finally, a friend brought me this mask, not sure what it represents. Bruce

I think the Torquay Pottery that I collect is a great example of marketing souvenirs. During WWII, salesmen representing the Torquay Potteries (in the Devon area of England) visited jewelry stores in Canada seeking orders. You can find pottery with place names of most cities and towns across Canada. An example is this Cottage-ware salt and pepper set with "Banff" done in sgraffito. The Devon Violet bottles (that I'm sure you've all seen) always have place names. This one I picked up because it is marked "Isle of Wight". My tacky tourist items come from a trip to Russia in 1974; a tin-like disc of St Basil's

Cathedral. The price tag says 0.45 rubles which in today's currency is 10 cents Canadian! The sort-of-cloisonné spoon is marked Moscow. I also brought along a postcard that I found while cleaning out my parents' house. I sent it to my Mother from Moscow September 15, 1974. It has a beautiful Russian stamp on it. My favorite sterling silver souvenir spoon is from a trip to the Yukon in 1975. It has a "sluice pan" on top with 2 little "gold" nuggets. Marjorie

This Oil Patch Kids doll comes with a Well Licence and is packaged in oil can! Viola In trying to research this doll, all I could find was that on April 22, 1985 a federal trademark registration was filed for OIL PATCH KIDS by Joanne Elaine Felix of Edmonton,

Alberta. Current status of the trademark is: abandoned, late response. There is an organization called Oil Patch Kids which raises funds to help underprivileged and abused children, but there's no mention of a doll. I noticed that the signature on the "licence" is J. E. Felix, Production Superintendent. I wonder if she made the dolls! The Editor Registered Trademark

As you know I have been collecting Canadian Parks vehicle passes from the 1930s featuring the buffalo; that has come to a halt. They're really hard to find. I found this 1940 parks pass (featuring a beaver) in Sooke (near Victoria). There's a selvage place I usually visit when I'm in the area- this time I was there four times! I don't think this one was ever on a vehicle; it still has its original shellac on it. Gord

Bessie's voodoo doll with both white & black "pins", "tacky" hula girl complete with grass skirt and ukulele, box of exotic miniature jugs, and a watch advertising CN railways.

I came to visit my sister, years before I immigrated here. I bought the elk-foot purse from a shop near the Banff Springs hotel and on another visit in the 1970s bought the leather boots at Army and Navy and proudly wore them at home, in Denmark. Definitely, my best souvenirs! Susanne

Since 1970 the ALPCA (Automobile License Plate Collectors Association) vote by its members for the best plate of the year from all plates in the United States and Canada. Canada won the first year, 1970 with the Northwest Territories plate of the first polar bear shape plate. Canada also won in 1973 with the Prince Edward Island plate "The Place To Be" and also in 1989 with the "Bluenose Ship" plate from Nova Scotia. Last year's plate from Alberta, the "Support Our

Troops" has just won The Best Plate of The Year. There are about 3500 members of our club world-wide and all members have a chance to vote on the plate of the year. There were just over 1200 votes cast for last year's plate. Members nominated their favorite plate and the directors of the ALPCA narrow it down to the best ten plates. Marsh Pysar from

Andrew and myself nominated the Alberta plate. From there members vote for their favorite plate. The photo is the plate I register for our car. Anyone can buy the plate for $85.45, of which $50.00 goes towards the Veterans fund. One can buy the plate without registering it to a vehicle. It costs another $22.50 to register it to a vehicle. Record Store Day

Sparked by a comment by Bull Moose employee Chris Brown that something should be done along the lines of Free Comic Book day, and with inspiration from a brainstorming session during a record store owners' meeting in Baltimore, Record Store Day was officially founded in 2007 by Eric Levine, Michael Kurtz, Carrie Colliton, Amy Dorfman, Don VanCleave, and Brian Poehner and is now celebrated at stores across the world, with hundreds of recording and other artists participating in the day by making special appearances, meet and greet with their fans, the holding of art exhibits, and the issuing of special vinyl and CD releases along with other promotional products to mark the occasion. Each store holds its own party for the day, to celebrate the perceived individuality of each store, and the place it holds in the community. from Wikipedia Record Store Day is the third Saturday in April; April 18 this year. According to John Horrigan's article on his record collection in the March 2014 Dig & Pick, Listen Up Records, here in Edmonton always has a big line-up, 75 people or so, at 8:00 AM on Record Store Day.

Baranger Motion Machines

Do you recall Colleen's Garage Sale find in Edmonton (September 2014 Dig & Pick)?

A recent episode of Antiques Road Show from Madison Wisconsin had appraiser Noel Barrett visiting the Circus Building of The House on the Rock, a local landmark in Spring Green, Wisconsin. The house was designed by Alex Jordan Jr. The current owner has 200 of the motion machines.

They were store-window mechanical animated advertising displays, rented to jewelers, and produced from 1925 to 1959 by the Baranger Company of South Pasadena, California. The dimensions of one typical "motion" were 21" wide, 12" tall, and 12" deep. Their appearance was toy-like, cartoonish, or Art Deco and they featured simple, repetitive motions performed by the doll-like sculptures. No brand names or jewelers' names appeared on the displays; most of them pitched the generic idea of buying diamonds or watches. The displays were designed by Arch E. Baranger, Hazel J. Baranger, and Robert Gerlach and were manufactured in runs of 30 each. A total of 167 different displays were produced. The displays were never sold, but rented to jewelers under a contract in which the displays were rotated monthly. Wikipedia

Noel Barrett valued The Gnomes (same model that Colleen found locally) at $3,000 to $5,000 and The Mermaid and Diver (below) at $9,000. The rarest and most valuable one is The Honeymoon Motion Rocket which is featured on the cover of Baranger Window Displays in Motion: dramatizing the jewel by A. Daniel, published in 2001.

A lot of six vintage Pyrex bowls sold for $90 at auction in August 2014. (Photo courtesy Joe R. Pyle Auctions)

2 Pyrex is made of a glass designed not to expand with changes in temperature (tempered Borosilicate). The composition of glass was originally created by scientists for use in laboratory glassware, railroad lanterns and battery jars. 3 On Pinterest, there are nearly 500 boards dedicated to Pyrex. 4 A lot consisting of a nesting set of three Pyrex, a brown milk crock, a green mixing bowl and brown and white mixing bowl, measuring between 4-1/4 inches and 6-3/4 inches tall by 9 and 11-1/2 inches in diameter, realized $90 in August 2014, through Joe R. Pyle Auctions. 5 The idea for Pyrex cookware came about in an unexpected way when, in 1913, the wife of a Corning Industriesscientist asked her husband to bring home some glass to replace a recently cracked casserole dish. He brought home the bottom of a battery jar, which she used to bake a cake, and in turn inspired the development of Pyrex cookware.

An advertisement, circa 1955, for Pyrex. 7 In 1915, two years after the scientist and his wife inspired the research and development of a glass baking dish, Pyrex bakeware was made available at hardware and department stores across the U.S. 8 As Pyrex launched during World War I, a key message the company incorporated in its advertising campaign was baking with glassware helps to save valuable wartime commodities. One of the marketingmessages was, “It saves labor and fuel, it makes food more appetizing and the table more inviting, for you to bake and serve in the same dish.” 9 Just four years after Pyrex bakeware became available to the public, more than 4.5 million pieces had been sold. 10 IAntiqueOnline.com features an active discussion forum devoted to Pyrex and is led by moderator Barbara E. Mauzy, author of “PYREX: The Unauthorized Collectors’ Guide” (Schiffer Books, 2008).
