Greetings Brothers & Sisters!

Workers rights; pictures and video from the Wisconsin solidarity rally,
the March 2nd budget cuts protest, and the rally for TSA workers; April
events for worker rights, education, charity backpack drive and job

TOMORROW NIGHT: WOMEN AND WORKER RIGHTS PANEL:
Tuesday, March 29th 6:30 - 8:30 pm San Jose City College
Student Center 204.
On March 25th, 1911 in New York City, 146 workers lost their
lives in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire. Workers, mostlyyoung immigrant women, could not escape the burning building
because the managers had locked the doors to the stairwells andexits to keep them from leaving early. This tragedy led to
legislation for the basic safety standards we rely on today. 100
years later- what safety issues do workers, especially women and
young workers, face on the job and what are our rights? Join us
for a panel discussion with special guests including the
granddaughter of a Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire survivor,
sponsored by the San Jose City College Labor Studies Program.
Questions or need directions? Call Eric at (408) 386-1548.
CHECK OUT HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE MONTH OF MARCH!
Tuesday, March 1st: Next Gen Bay Area joined a rally of almost
1,000 people at the San Jose State MLK Library to support
Wisconsin workers. Hundreds of thousands of people have been
protesting in Wisconsin and around the country against Governor
Walkers attacks on collective bargaining. Young people have
been a big part of keeping the movement energized. Heres what
Gina Spitz, a grad student at UW Madison and member of the
TAA Teaching Assistants Association, reports from the Capitol:These last two weeks have been full of sudden classconsciousness and exciting organization but also frustration and
fatigue for many. The best moment for me so far (personally),
everyone crammed into the hallways outside of the hearing
room, yelling at the top of their lungs with their fists in the air
"we will speak! we will speak!". The atmosphere is incredibly

friendly and civil but also determined and demanding. Check out
more pictures and video here. Way to go SJSU MECHA, Students for Higher Education, the San
Jose Peace and Justice Center, and other organizers of the March
2nd budget cuts action!! Almost a hundred students and
community members marched from St. James park to San Jose
State to take a stand against the deep cuts to higher education in
the state budget and the immigration policies tearing apart
families and our state.
After 9/11 George W. Bush banned collective bargaining for
Transportation Security Officers at airports. AFGE, the American
Federation of Government Employees AFL-CIO, worked for 9
years to win those rights back and on March 11th we celebratedTSOs right to vote for a union!
